Looking back at Sunday's 49ers game, there were seven plays (or sequences) that sealed their fate.

I was on a 7:45 a.m. flight out of New Orleans this morning, so I was unable to get back in time for coach Mike Nolan's press conference.

Here are my articles for today's Press Democrat: "Lost in New Orleans" and "Deuce gets loose."

The final score was 31-17. It was not a pretty sight today here at the Superdome. Coach Mike Nolan didn't pull any punches. He said everyone played poorly. He said every aspect of the team, including the coaching, deserves blame for this one.

This is not a GPS game, per se, but you can certainly look at this four-week stretch that begins Sunday as an indicator of where the 49ers stand in the NFL.

After watching and re-watching every play from the 49ers' 31-13 victory over the Lions on Sunday, it's time to toss around a few kudos and some observations:

It's another Win Monday in 49erland, so the players will not be around today.

Since the 2004 season, the 49ers have played 67 games. They've won 19 games during that time. But here's an amazing fact: The 49ers have won only two games by more than a touchdown.
OK, first things first. I called it Victory Monday. The 49ers actually call it "Win Monday." I believe my phrase has a little better alliteration, but oh well.
It's a gorgeous day in Seattle, where the 49ers and Seahawks are set for an NFC West game. This is unlike the past couple years, when wind and rain has greeted us.
The Mike Holmgren Farewell Tour is in its second week. As you know, the Seahawks coach (San Francisco native and former 49ers offensive coordinator) is coaching his final season in Seattle.

Coach Mike Nolan held his day-after-game press conference in the team's defensive meeting room.

It's a spectacular day here at Candlestick Park, where the 49ers open the season at 1:15 p.m. against the Cardinals.

Who is Matt?

Matt Maiocco is in his 14th year covering the 49ers. He has reported for The Press Democrat since 2000. He is a three-time winner of Pro Football Writers of America awards. Rotoworld.com ranked "Instant 49ers" as the No. 2 NFL team blog in the country in 2007. Maiocco has written two books, "Roger Craig's Tales from the 49ers Sideline" and "San Francisco 49ers: Where Have You Gone?" Matt can also be heard regularly on KNBR (680-AM) during the season. He is also been added this season as a regular guest on ESPN's "First Take."
