October 2008 Archives

Mike Singletary said today that he would not change a thing about how he handled the first week of tenure as interim head coach. He said he plans to find out who leaked the information to an Arizona radio reporter that he dropped his pants during halftime to inspire his players on Sunday against the Seahawks.

Thanks for all the questions. There were a lot of overlapping questions, but I tried to hit on as many as I could.

The 49ers were getting their behinds spanked through 30 minutes of play on Sunday against the Seahawks.

It was a light day in Santa Clara today. For the newspaper, I wrote about Ahmad Brooks. But now seems like a good time to solicit some questions from y'all.

Took the day off from making the trek to Santa Clara this morning, but I can still deliver a slice of Santa Clara to you.
The 49ers will honor Hall-of-Fame defender Fred Dean on Dec. 7 at halftime of the game against the New York Jets, the 49ers have announced. But it's not too early to look at the nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2009.
Coach Mike Singletary informed the quarterbacks this afternoon at Shaun Hill will replace J.T. O'Sullivan as the team's starter for the Monday, Nov. 10, game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Mike Singletary had his first day-after game press conference today at the 49ers' team offices in Santa Clara.

Mike Singletary is the 49ers' interim head coach. But there was nothing "interim" about his actions during yesterday's game.

Interim coach Mike Singletary had an eventual first game as interim head coach in the 49ers' 34-13 loss to the Seahawks at Candlestick.

Interim coach Mike Singletary had an eventual first game as interim head coach in the 49ers' 34-13 loss to the Seahawks at Candlestick.

It's another beautiful day on Candlestick Point, site of today's 49ers-Seahawks elimination game in the NFC West.
When Chris Foerster replaced George Warhop as a position coach it turns out that wasn't the only change on the offensive line.
Niners interim head coach Mike Singletary said today that he has prepared his entire life to be a coach. But he had other priorities that stood in the way of his turning to that profession after his playing career concluded.

In August 2007, a few days after the death of Bill Walsh, I spoke to Mike Singletary. I asked the Hall-of-Fame player about the Hall-of-Fame coach. What follows is the article I wrote for The Press Democrat.

Offensive coordinator Mike Martz met with the media today in Santa Clara. He talks to the media every-other week.

Thanks for participating in the Q&A. The session has expired.

I know it was a little (OK, a LOT) difficult to follow the progression of the questions and my responses. Probably in the future, the best way to handle it is to put all the questions and their answers in a separate post.

Hey, you live and you learn.

Seattle coach Mike Holmgren was patched through to the media trailer for his conference call. His first words: "It's kind of wild down there."

Mike Singletary talked to the media, just moments before hitting the field for the first time for the team's walk-through.

Mike Nolan has spent a lot of time the past two days on the phone, speaking with friends and family and many of his former players.

Nolan was fired Monday after going 18-37 in 3 1/2 seasons as head coach. Today, he was gracious enough to return my phone call. We spoke for about 15 minutes, and covered such topics as what went right and what went wrong.

Ultimately, he said he did not disagree with the decision to fire him because he understands his job was to win football games. He said he will be rooting hard for Mike Singletary to "make up the difference and do the things we couldn't do and win some games."

Here is the complete transcript of Mike Nolan's exit interview.

The 49ers' game Sunday against the Seahawks will not be blacked out on local television, a team spokesman said just moments ago.
The 49ers have not enjoyed a winning season since Steve Mariucci was dumped after the 2002 season. The 49ers were 10-6, champions of the NFC West, and won a first-round playoff game.

Mike Nolan made his first public comment today, one day after being fired as 49ers head coach. Nolan released a statement through the 49ers today.

The 49ers just held a press conference in which Mike Singletary was announced as the head coach, replacing Mike Nolan, who was fired on Monday.

The 49ers signed center Eric Heitmann on Sept. 29 to a contract extension through 2011.

Before I get to bed, I just wanted to give you some of my thoughts on what happened today.
The 49ers have announced that Mike Nolan has been fired, and Mike Singletary has signed a deal through the end of the season to become the interim coach.
So did anything happen while I was traveling back from the East Coast?

When looking at the schedule prior to the season, it was easy to predict a four-game losing streak at this point.

After all, the 49ers stood little chance at Saints, home against the Patriots and Eagles, and then back on the road against the Giants. Right?

Check here early and often for a live blog from today's 49ers-Giants game in East Rutherford, N.J. The Internet connection has not been good, so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to blog today.

Just arrived in New Jersey. The team will be touching down a little later this evening.
The 49ers claimed offensive lineman Kirk Barton off waivers today to take cornerback Shawntae Spencer's spot on the 53-man roster.
The 49ers' system for replay challenges has been a topic of discussion this week. After all, coach Mike Nolan has experienced the least success of any coach in the league this season. He is 0-for-4 on replay challenges.
Left tackle Joe Staley says he wanted the rematch with Giants defensive end Michael Strahan, who schooled him when the teams met last season at the Meadowlands. That game remains as the most humbling - and probably biggest learning experience - of Staley's young career.
The 49ers this morning signed fullback David Kirtman (6-0, 238) off the Chargers' practice squad to take the roster spot vacated when Zak Keasey was placed on injured reserve.
As expected, there was no action involving the 49ers today at the NFL trade deadline, which passed about a half-hour ago.

There will be no changes to the 49ers defense, coach Mike Nolan said today during his Monday press conference.

"No, I'm looking for us to play better," Nolan answered when asked if changes were coming.

Just received word from the NFL Office in New York on what happened when 49ers coach Mike Nolan challenged David Akers' 38-yard field goal on Sunday. The kick gave the Eagles a 27-26 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

My first question to league spokesman Randall Liu (via email) is whether the play was even reviewable.

    Is the 49ers' season lost?

Coach Mike Nolan tried to ease the concerns of his team afterward. His postgame talk to his team focused on how the season is long and there's still a lot of time for the 49ers to turn this thing around.

Check here throughout the day for all the latest happenings from the 49ers-Eagles game at Candlestick Park.
There might be someone new wearing the green dot on the 49ers' defense Sunday against the Eagles.
News out of Philly is that the Eagles will be without running back Brian Westbrook, receiver Reggie Brown and guard Shawn Andrews.
Are the 49ers getting from Vernon Davis what they expected when they selected him with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2006 draft?
We're roughly one-third of the way through the season. (Actually, we're 31.25 percent of the way through the 49ers' 16-game schedule, but who's counting?) So this seems like a perfect time to take a step back.
Thanks to everyone for finding your way to my blog. I'm still trying to negotiate my way through all this, with a big assist from Heather Irwin of the Bite Club. (By the way, I've tentatively agreed to write a food review from the road one of these days.)
Coach Mike Nolan just met with the scribes (and a few cameras) for his typical Wednesday morning media briefing.
Andy Reid, the gruff coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, joined us on a conference call this morning. He kept his answers short, concise and to the point. He was followed by rookie receiver DeSean Jackson.
Since the arrivals of Mike Nolan and Scot McCloughan in 2005, the 49ers have chosen eight players in the first or second rounds of the draft.
Running back Frank Gore and linebacker Patrick Willis are two young guys who are turning into leaders in the 49ers' locker room. But neither had much to say after the team's loss to the Patriots on Sunday.
Coach Mike Nolan held his usual Monday press conference, and spoke about Sunday's 30-21 loss to the Patriots. Among the topics he discussed was tight end Vernon Davis, who was again held without a catch.
The 49ers jumped out to leads of 7-0 and 14-7, and then disappeared
Check here early and often for all the updates from the 49ers-Patriots game today at Candlestick.
When the schedule came out, you could mark this one down as a 49ers loss. Now, things look a lot different. The Patriots aren't nearly as imposing without QB Tom Brady.

Tomorrow has not yet arrived, but tomorrow's paper has. Here's my article, "Martz's deep pass routes testing offensive line."

    * * *

Pass-rusher Tully Banta-Cain was among the last 49ers to leave the locker room Sunday in New Orleans. That's unique because Banta-Cain did not even suit up for the game.
Niners defensive coordinator Greg Manusky talks about the 49ers' different defenses.
There are no changes to the 49ers' injury report. LB Manny Lawson, T Jonas Jennings and CB Shawntae Spencer are still out.
Running back Frank Gore will be a busy man on Sunday against the Patriots. Gore leads the NFL in yards from scrimmage with 412 yards 525 yards in four games. He'll undoubtedly be the focus of Bill Belichick's defense.
You think the Patriots are going to be prepared to face the 49ers on Sunday?

Linebacker Manny Lawson will not play in Sunday's game against the Patriots due to a hamstring strain, 49ers coach Mike Nolan said today.

The Patriots are next up for the 49ers, and coach Bill Belichick this morning held his conference call with Bay Area reporters
