Josh Morgan might start at split end, as Bryant Johnson is still banged up. Jason Hill might also get some extending playing time. The only official lineup change is Barry Sims for Jonas Jennings at RT.
For the Giants, Chase Blackburn will start at MLB for Pierce, and Bryan Kehl starts at WLB for Wilkinson.

Vernon Davis, Donald Strickland and Nate Clements are out at midfield for the coin toss. The 49ers win the toss and elect to receive.
FIRST QUARTER
--Niners take over at the 23. Michael Robinson starts in the backfield, along with Gore. Niners had two TEs with Davis and Bajema. Gore thrown for 2-yard loss.
--On second down, Bryant Johnson and Josh Morgan enter. . . . On previous play, Staley lined up at end of formation and did not report as an eligible receiver. The penalty is declined . . . Eight-yard pass to Robinson.
--Here's the first third-down, and O'Sullivan is sacked.
--Lawson starts, as the Giants take over at the 34. Niners line up in 3-4. Manning short pass to Jacobs is incomplete.
--On second down, Jacobs fumbled and Clements should've recovered, but he tried to run and fumbled himself. After penalty, the Giants face a third-and-21.
--Burress looks to catch the pass and make the first down, but he can't keep the handle on the pass. It's ruled a incompletion.
--Niners take over at their own 21 with 12:01 left in the quarter after Feagles' punt. (Man, that guy is old.)
--The first trickery on first and 15. Robinson takes direct snap at hands it to Gore for 3 yards.
--JTO sacked again on third down. That's two straight three-and-outs . . . ugly three-and-outs. Lee on to punt.
--Lee with 39-yard punt, with Tarell Brown making the immediate tackle of return man Domenik Hixon. Giants take over at their own 46 with 9:41 left in the quarter.
--Giants get first first down of the game on 14-yard Manning pass to Toomer. And they come right back to Toomer for 8 yards.
--And just like that. Jacobs around right end (Sopoaga's side) for a 26-yard TD run with 7:52 left in the quarter. It's GIANTS 7, 49ERS 0.
--Niners take over at the 34 after kickoff. Davis and Walker are in, along with Morgan and Bruce. Gore is the single back . . . And Davis has one of the worst drops you'll ever see. That would've been big yards.
--But, hey, at least Gore can catch. He makes a nice grab of a ball thrown behind him for a 26-yard gain.
--The Giants come with a huge blitz, JTO spins out of it and complete an 11-yard pass to Bruce to the Giants' 24.
--Third and 8 from the 22 . . . Incomplete pass to Gore, who took a big hit from safety James Butler.
--Nedney on for a 40-yard FG try. He makes it. It's GIANTS 7, 49ERS 3 with 4:23 left in the quarter.
INJURY UPDATE: Allen Rossum left groin strain. His return is questionable. That could mean Walker or Robinson will be back returning kickoffs. Clements or Battle are the likely candidates on punts, if Rossum does not return.
--Nate Clements with a personal foul when he shoved Madison Hedgecock, who shoved him. Instead of a third-and-8, it's first-and-10 around midfield.
--Clements with a ticky-tack pass-interference penalty for his coverage against Burress. Giants have ball on the 49ers' 19.
--Roderick Green is on the field to rush off right end. Looks as if he's regained his pass-rush job from Tully Banta-Cain, who is also in uniform for this game.
--Fourth and 1 from the 10 . . . Bradshaw gets the call around right end. It's a first down. First and goal at the 8.
--Jacobs gains 6 yards up the middle. He was stopped for just a yard or two, but kept pushing the pile. That's the end of the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
--Jacobs with the TD run. It's GIANTS 14, 49ERS 3 with 14:55 left in the quarter.
--The 49ers respond with the Josh Morgan drive. He catches passes of 14 and 14 yards. Then, he beats Giants CB Aaron Ross for a 30-yard touchdown. Nice throw from O'Sullivan. That's a six-play, 74-yard drive that lasted 3:30. Now, it's GIANTS 14, 49ERS 10 with 11:25 left in the half.
--The just showed that replay on the TD. Vernon Davis showed very good hands on that play, as he blocked the defensive end one-on-one to help give JTO time to get the ball down the field to Morgan.
--On third and 11, Manning completes 14-yard pass to Burress. First and 10 at the Giants' 35.
--The 49ers got one back when Burress catches a third-down pass. This time, Burress is called for P.I. vs. Clements. The Giants will punt. Clements is back deep to return it.
--The Internet is a little slow, but I'm trying to plug away. Niners take over at their own 19 with 6:30 left in the quarter. They're hanging in the game at this point.
INJURY UPDATE: DE Ray McDonald has a sprained knee. HIs return is questionable.
--JTO had Bruce WIDE open down the field, but he overthrew him. That's a big one that got away.
--Now it's third and 9 . . . incomplete to Morgan.
--Not sure there's a corner who comes up in run support better than Clements. He stops Jacobs for 3-yard loss.
--It's third and 7 . . . Willis with hit on Manning as he's throwing for an incomplete pass.
--Niners take over at their own 15 with 3:24 left in the half.
--Another bad JTO pick. He was trying to get the ball to Morgan and did not see safety Michael Johnson, who returns it 18 yards to the 9.
--Niners defense comes up big, holding the Giants to a short FG. On third down, the Giants to get the ball to Burress on a fade. Clements had good position on the play. It's GIANTS 17, 49ERS 10 with 1:52 left in the half.
--Very curious clock management for the 49ers, not taking a timeout after Gore's false start. They lost 18 seconds in the process. They had ALL THREE timeouts and they lost 18 seconds. Why are they saving those timeouts?
--Bruce with a 28-yard catch from JTO to the Giants' 19. Niners use their first timeout.
--JTO with another pick. This one in the end zone, as he tried to get it to Battle. Johnson with the pick again. Wow. Gore was open underneath. This half did not end on a good note for O'Sullivan and the offense.
--The Giants take a knee at that's the end of the first half.
Halftime stats: The 49ers lead the Giants in total yards, 186-129. O'Sullivan is 11 of 18 for 168 with one TD and two interceptions (pass rating 70.8). Eli Manning is 8 of 14 for 72 yards (passer rating 71.1).
Gore has just 9 yards on six carries.
THIRD QUARTER
--If the 49ers had deferred, they would be getting the ball to open the second half.
--Keith Lewis' roughness penalty moves the Giants 15 yards closer after the kickoff.
--Kentwan Balmer is starting the second half in place of injured Ray McDonald. McDonald has come back to the bench, but he's not wearing his shoulder pads.
--Giants have moved the ball to the 49ers' 45. Nice play by Walt Harris to break up a third-down pass to Burress. The defense is playing very well.
--Arnaz Battle makes fair catch at the 11-yard line. O'Sullivan is throwing some passes to Shaun Hill on the field during this TV timeout.
--Third and 2 . . . Gore fumbles the handoff. The Giants have recovered at the 18. Interesting. After the previous play, Gore started to come off the field, and DeShaun Foster was several steps onto the field, then Gore waved him off.
--On third and 7, Giants gain 9 yards on pass to Toomer to the 6.
--Burress gets position on Clements to make the TD grab. Then Burress throws the ball into the stands. It's GIANTS 24, 49ERS 10 with 9:01 remaining in the third quarter. The Niners have a lot of work to do. The turnovers have killed them again.
--On the previous drive, the official ruling is now that Gore never had the ball. Therefore, it's O'Sullivan's fumble. That's his third turnover of the game and his 12th in the past four games.
--Walker with a nice return, but Goldson is called for holding. The 49ers start at their own 19.

Thru 3 quarters, the Giants have truly done nothing to win this game. The
Niners have simply given it away. If they play good football in the 4th
quarter, the Niners will win this game. If they do what they've done all
year in these situations, it's going to be a frustrating 15 minutes coming up.
We have hope going into the 4th against the Giants, unbelievable. Let's hope the O gets going.

Talent indeed. I changed the positions of the defensive players for the 9ers on Madden 09 for PS3 and switched from a 3-4 to a 4-3, and the team's overall rating shot up from a 72 to an 85 without adding anyone. So yes, there's a solid core of talent on defense. Just no direction from an overall franchise perspective... on both sides of the ball. Except special teams now I suppose. Could SF get anymore opposite of the 1980s roots? HA! I love the drinking game idea btw.

there is no synergy energy between jto and the rest of the team....he is in a position of leadership and he is on the outside looking in.....maybe it is to be expected but to have no players coming to him during the game is telling...alex smith has way more heart and i suspect talent that jto will ever have....and i still think martz showed his lack of leadership with alex smith as well....nolan has to go and take martz and jto with u and scott as well and start from scratch with homgren and as gm and now i drew a blank the x-coach from pittsburg as coach, cower or give singletary the head coaching job now....or bring in cower now so he gets a feel for the team before the draft.....

Any doubts now about how Nolan is clueless in time management. End of the first half keeping those timeouts while the clock is running down while you're driving on on offense, Mike that's when you use them duh! Let Martz give JTO instructions on the sideline as to what he's supposed to do. Second half you burn two timeouts on defense when you're behind. Another non-challenge on Giants 1st down shows the leadership on this team needs a change. After 3 1/2 years with Nolan this team still isn't winning.

2-5 this year, 18-37 (Nolan era,) heading towards another losing season and that will make it 2-8 under the 10 year rule of the Yorks. Nothing more needs be said.
Liked seeing the replay of the Manny Lawson blocked kick with the camera view behind the Giants' kicker. As soon as the kick was blocked and Clements picked it up, the camera angle showed a fan, wearing a red number 21 jersey, mixed in a sea of blue, pumping his fists into the air and jumping up and down.
Maybe Frank Gore, Patrick Willis, Manny Lawson, Nate Clements, Josh Morgan can get on a seperate plane, and the other can crash, and we can start from scratch!
I am sad. Am I too weak for not jumping of the Niners bandwagon, or too weak for not being able to love another team. Why couldn't My dad teach me to love the Patriots or Giants or Titans or Redskins? Anyone but this ridiculous team. I can't even help it.

JTO is as much a cause of our losing as flies are a cause of garbage. JTO's INTs and fumbles are only part of this whole thing. The other parts are poor drafting, poor O-line, relying too heavily on free agents, poor coaching, and poor preparedness. At least JTO can complete a forward pass in between INTs, and possibly even throw a TD here or there. Alex needed 8 seconds to make a decision, had a slow release, happy feet, pocket panic, and terrible accuracy. And let's not forget, our offense under Smith set records of futility and was unwatchable, simply nauseating, maybe the worst ever. If JT is going to the bench, it should be in favor of Hill, plain and simple. Even if Smith was healthy, I'd play Hill over him by a long shot.

If JTO continues this type of play, you can't say he's a good backup. You want a backup that can manage a game and not turn the ball over too much. A guy who can make big plays but is that turnover prone is either running the scout team or running his lawn mower on sunday afternoons...

Oneniner....yeah because watching Smith's futility over the last few years was soooooo much better huh? Remember, the only reason we even HAVE JTO is because Alex Smith was a bust and anyone who is anyone in the Niners braintrust finally admitted it!! The fact is he wouldn't be doing ANY better whatsoever right now, holding the ball for 8 seconds and throwing 7 feet over and behind guys!!! Yeah who could forget all those beautiful Smith throws and all his impressive 4th quarters!!! LOL!!
9er1 - not defending Smith by any stretch... but the receivers JTO is working with are FAR better than anything Smith had to work with. Except Antonio Bryant, but Smith put up pretty good numbers with him. At this point, though, I'd almost prefer futility to back-breakingn turnovers. We can only hope that this is a mental thing that JTO can work his way through. Oh yeah... CHANGE THE WAY YOU HOLD THE BALL!!!!!

Shootme - I agree about the WRs, but even when Smith was starting, how many loads and loads of replays did we watch where guys were open downfield and Smith completely missed them by either not seeing them or getting happy feet in the pocket and doing his infamous scramble to the sideline out of bounds throw??? How quickly we forget just how frustrating it was to watch complete offensive futility. While I'm sure JTO will outgrow something like this(lets not forget P.Manning threw tons of INTS when he started out), it is frustrating to watch, but IMO not nearly as bad as al lthose deflating, defeating 3 and outs with Smith. At least an INT is usually when the guy is over-trying to make something happen. With Alex, it was punt punt punt, and an occasion Nedney FG. NEVER the big play like the one to Morgan(and should've caught the other big one) and some of the other big throws today.

The obvious: Nolan needs to go. The less obvious: Scot McCloughan should join him on the way out the door. The fact: Scot has made terrible selections as GM. The unfortunate: We are four years into a rebuilding plan and have invested heavily in building an offensive line that flat out stinks. Think about it: SF has spent $35M in a left tackle who cannot stay on the field (Jennings), two No. 1 picks (Staley and VD, a TE with hands like a toilet seat), two No. 2 picks that are picking up more splinters than blitzers (Rachal and Baas -- who was a pick or two himself from being a R1 selection), and a #3 (Snyder). Let me repeat, this line stinks... I don't even want to start talking about the D line. It's even worse. The bottom line: This is a bad team and a bad franchise. We are closer to being the Detroit Lions and Oakland Raiders than the once proud "Team of the '80s." What a sad state of affairs. Final comment: Go ahead and fire Nolan. He needs to go. But don't lose sight of one thing -- with the exception of Gore and Willis, the players on this team are not very good. Let me repeat: the players on this team are NOT VERY GOOD. That means we're looking at another 2-3 years of this kind of performance -- minimum -- assuming we get a GM who can spot talent and someone who can coach them up.

Hell of a game by O'Sullivan - 256 yards passing, 27 yards rushing, 1 TD, 2 interceptions & 37 fumbles. Considering the O-Line can't stop anyone from getting to the QB and the D-line can't get to the QB - Have the coaches come up with the idea yet that perhaps our O-Line & the D-Line should switch places? This is just horrible.
Glad I didn't waste a second watching this game (spent the weekend at Yellowstone with the family). The quality of this team is a complete joke. I hope to read in this blog tomorrow that Nolan is among the unemployed. How many more excuses can he come up with? How much more will the Yorks take? How much more will the fans take before this team gets less then %50 attendence?
Wow. That last quarter was really horrible. If this game doesn't seal the boot for N, don't know what will. But we need to use the rest of the year wisely, and that means finding a real head coach that we want to stay, not an interim. And not Martz. Too many things not working, including the offensive line and the quarterback. Dear God: please send us a new owner AND a new coach. The sooner the better.

JTO's mistakes don't make Smith any more attractive to me. Smith stil lwasn't the answer for anything. I'd take Hill as the starter any day, I actually thought he deserved to be the starter after how he finished the year last season, but no such luck. Definetely a capable QB, however.
