Knowing that Westbrook will not play Sunday against the 49ers does not change how the 49ers' defense will approach this game, 49ers coach Mike Nolan said. He said the difference between Westbrook and backup Correll Buckhalter is not too dramatic - such as, say, the difference between
"Buckhalter is a very good back," Nolan said. "It'll give them a chance to activate (Lorenzo) Booker a little more in the offense. So things like that are what we'll have to pay a little closer attention to."
The 49ers anticipated Andrews would not play, and the 49ers figure receiver Kevin Curtis' return will compensate for the loss of Brown. Curtis, who caught 77 passes for 1,110 yards and six touchdowns, has been inactive for the first five games of the season with a sports hernia.

Linebacker Manny Lawson (hamstring) is doubtful for the game. His chances of playing are slim to none. Tackle Jonas Jennings (shoulder) has no chance of playing, Nolan said.
* * *
Linebacker Takeo Spikes is not injured, but he took fewer reps in practice today. Nolan likes to keep some his veterans fresh.
* * *
After practice, rookie defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer went off by himself and got some additional work on the blocking sled. Nolan saw Balmer and went over to give him some coaching tips.
Balmer, at times, has a tendency to raise his pad level, which makes him easier for an offensive lineman to control.
"If I just line up in front of the sled and hit it a bunch of times, I can work on pad level," Nolan said. "But the reality is, in a game, nobody ever comes straight off the ball. They try to work for an angle to stretch you here or cut you off there. So you have to line up on the sled in a way that you can make that adjustment yourself, so that it's real. Otherwise you practice footwork that's not going to happen."

My wife just sent me an email, telling me I had to read her favorite blogger's latest entry. She added, "This is the kind of Niner reporting that I like."

There goes Mr. "we'll stay the course" Nolan again. "the difference between Westbrook and backup Correll Buckhalter is not too dramatic"...I hope he's kidding. Westbrook is one of the most explosive RB's in the league and Buckhalter who? Why not have 8 in the box to stop Buckhalter since he's so much like Westbrook. Oh, I forgot, if we have 8 in the box then we'll be too aggressive. Let's just stick with our Big Sub package because it worked against Seattle and their 5 no name receivers. We just need to "execute better" and "stay the course."
I just hope they've planned to stop the shovel pass from the two yard line. The Eagles do that play all the time.
I think John York should upstage Dan Snyder and offer free Vanilla Ice Cream at the game see if Nolan gets the hint.
Here we go again, fooling us fans into thinking we will beat a team without one of its star players. That worked well last week! It pains me to hear sport talk guys on the radio week after week pick NFL teams and the niners are the laughing stock of the NFL. One guy last week in Denver called them the "dog butt niners". I have lost all confidence that they will even compete in games anymore. I'm fed up with this coaching staff. Hey 9erDino, Nolan is not kidding!
9erDino, well said!! I really hope Nolan doesn't believe half the things he says. He must think we fans are clueless because we only watch the games. I guess he doesn't think we can tell the difference between an "effective" defense and one that can't seem to make a play on third down so they can get off the field especially when they need to.

9er Dino: well said. If Nolan believes half the things he says we know why the D is having problems. I also feel he thinks we fans are stupid because we only watch the games. We can't tell the difference between an "effective" defense and one that can't seem to make a play on 3rd down to get off the field especially when they need to.
Hey Matt, is there going to be a Fly Over because of fleet week at the Stick on Sunday?

Wow, a bit of a chore to log in to comment but now it works. Great. If the 9ers win Sunday it will be in spite of the defensive scheming, not because of it. Where is there any history of Nolan having an excellent game plan? Look at what Miami did the last two weeks using what they have. McNabb/ Reid beats Nolan/ JT anyday. Niners defense reminds me of a round of golf where you feel like you can hit the ball fairly well and maybe even get a birdie or two but when you look at the score card you didn't really do well at all. They have some nice plays but no consistent successful game plan.
OK, where'd my comment go??

I hope the game is close. I am afraid that its going to be blow out by Eagles.
Everytime Sala Palin talks, she kinds of remind of coach Nolan.

The fact that their missing key players would make the Niners of lore salivate, but given the performance of this team against such wounded prey instead leaves a feeling of cotton mouth. Nolans' game plan will figure out how to lose and we will continue to bake in the smoke of embarrassment.

This game screams for hassle the QB and run, run, run to slow the Blitz packages.

Nolan has reached his ceiling. Best Player Available Drafting strategy is beginning to prove that lots of good athletes still have to be shown a good plan that allows each of them to fuction as a team.
The #1 QB and the #6 TE vs the myriad of WR moves have gotten nothing accomplished.
Where would this team be without Frank?
Even Patrick is getting swallowed up now and there's no counterpunch from Nolan.
He's overmatched at this level, he needs to take a little advice from Petrino and Saban, go to college.
Will we be seeing more Jeff Ulbrich this sunday?

I don't blame Nolan for not showing his hand about what he's going to do on D with Westbrook out. Of course, that's giving him the benefit of the doubt that he really has changed his game plan. As my user name suggests, I live in Philly and catch a lot of Eagles games. Their offense lives and dies by Westbrook. They have had a decent offense for several years without a go to WR or a between the tackles RB. They have only been successful because of the multiple threat that is Westbrook.

There’s a small margin between winning and losing in the NFL. About 75% of the teams will finish between 6-10 and 10-6. A game here, a game there between a successful season and a bad one. Each game, among competitive teams, boils down to a handful or less of key plays that swing the game one way or the other. In the Seattle game, it was Willis’s interception that changed a rout by the Seahawks into an eventual victory by the Niners. Against NO and NE, it was the killer long TD passes and the killer interceptions of JT. Five turnovers in the AZ game. Teams that are used to being successful and competitive will generally prevail on these difference making plays versus teams that have a culture of failure and non-competitiveness, even though the teams are fairly well matched in personnel. It’s a difficult jump in psychology for a team, such as the Niners, to make that jump in confidence and expectations of winning. We have not even been competitive for many years now. This year, finally, we are at least that. We could be 5-0 or 1-4, but we’re 2-3. We no longer routinely trail 21-0 at the half or struggle mightily to avoid a shutout. A losing franchise needs a signature victory to make the psychological jump to winning expectations. The Catch and beating Dallas in 1981 launched a culture of winning that lasted twenty years. We are not good enough yet for such a moment, but we are good enough to compete and get used to being competitive and being respected as an opponent on a weekly basis. That’s what this year is all about. A team finding a winning identity and attitude. Our eventual record is secondary to finding this confidence and consistency. It’s a work in progress and hauling someone out to lynch each week as the culprit of all our failures shows that we fans have a loser attitude, too. Get with it guys! There’s not a one of you, even the die hard Nolan haters, that has approached a single game this season wondering how bad we’ll get beat versus wondering if we can win it. That’s big progress. It’s when you can think Super Bowl contender that you can nitpick a player or coach. Right now, the coaches ain’t coaching and the players ain’t playing. But they’re getting there. Slowly but surely. We just lost to the Patriots and you guys are bitching like you thought we should win! AND WE SHOULD HAVE.

Yo, Matt... I'm trying to think if there's ever been a time that Nolan has taken the blame for a loss. It always seems to be that the players were at fault, someone didn't react properly, someone fell down in coverage, a questionable call, lack of execution.... I can't ever remember him saying after a game, "Yeah, what can I say? We were just outcoached. Plain and simple. Many of the tools seem to be in place for a playoff run in our sorry division, and the players deserve better from me and my staff on game day. Today they didn't get the best from us. We didn't have them prepared and there's no excuse for it." ..... Something like that would be refreshing instead of Manny Lawson fell down trying to tackle Gaffney, and that's why we lost. Or, "Watch the tape and you'll see that so and so wasn't in his lane..." Gimme a break. Take SOME responsibility once in a while. Oh, and that challenge in the New Orleans game was a joke. Was that a 5 yard gain? He challenged to "slow the game down"? Yeah, waste a challenge and a TO, dude. Nice.

It seems like they are playing with a monkey on their back, maybe the should go out there and just play. The front 4 obviously needs to show more pressure and the safeties need more pep in their step. The run D i just cant understand, the RBs are just running through the gaps against the 3-4 and the blockers come up and take out the LBs. They need to force the RBs to the outside and crowd the line. The O needs to rely on the run game in critical situations, they also have Foster. JTO in the passing game may need a check down at times or just needs to throw it away.
Most important areas for tomorrow's game are oline play and dline play. Last week Franklin and Macdonald were regularly crushed on running plays. The left side of the Pats' oline was destroying our dline. On one of the Pats td's they single blocked macdonald and franklin then sent the onside tackle straight (no-chip block) onto block willis. Our dline cannot allow itself to be blocked one-on-one, no defensive scheme can be successful like that.
Regardless of what scheme these guys are in, they arent executing. This defense played better earlier in the season (Az, Seattle, Det).
Guys, sometimes its not the coaches, the owners, or the qbs...Football is played with 22 players on the field and 8-10 are on the line tackle to tackle on every play. Line play is the heart of football, and this team is not winning these battles near enough to beat good teams.
Line play is the heart of football. on any play 8-10 of the 22 players are lined up tackle to tackle. We arent winning the line battle near enough to beat good teams. Last week our dlineman were getting handled one on one. Specifically, macdonald and franklin on the second Pats td were single blocked and the tackle went straight (no chip block) into the second level and blocked willis. No defense can be successful if the defensive line is getting single blocked, our guys have to make them pay for this.

Well, all Nolan has to do is nothing but play his Prevent Nickel and the game will belong to Seattle. We just need Groucho Marx dug out from the grave so he could talk to the opposing Eagles team for inspiration. Nolan, just lose baby and you're out the door. I got the party all ready for Fire Nolan!
You know, the way Mike NOlan talks nowadays, it reminds me of the angles World Wrestling Entertainment pulls off. I wonder if Nolan is watching Vince mcMahon highlights to come up with talk like this, or maybe he watches William Regal exercising his 'power kick.' Well, Nolan, we fans are on to you.
People, just hit submit once, not 3 or 4 times!
