Just received word from the NFL Office in
My first question to league spokesman Randall Liu (via email) is whether the play was even reviewable.
Field goals and PATs are reviewable this season. Here is the wording in the rule book on a reviewable kick: "A field goal or Try attempt that crosses below or above the crossbar, inside or outside the uprights when it is lower than the top of the uprights, or touches anything."
So, "(a) field goal or Try attempt that crosses above either upright without touching anything" is a non-reviewable play, Liu relayed in his message.
Why was Nolan allowed to challenge the call?
"On the play in question, the official underneath ruled that the field goal had gone inside the uprights and not over, thus making it a reviewable play," Liu said.
Referee Ron Winter ruled that there was no indisputable visual evidence to overturn the call on the field, Liu said.
An NFL pool reporter (that's my job at Candlestick) is allowed to ask questions of the referee after the game. However, it was only after Nolan gave his version of events that it became apparent more clarification was needed. Therefore, no request to speak was made to speak after the game with Winter.
Here's what Nolan said about the situation after the game:
RE: The field goal.
Nolan: "The field goal. Yeah. This is not a complaint to the officials but they have to make a signal at some point that says it's above the bar or not. Because as it is, I challenged it not knowing if it's above or below. What I'm saying is if the challenge...I still have to challenge because I threw the red flag. Because I asked him, 'Is it challengeable?' And he said, 'It really doesn't matter now that you threw the red flag.' So either way it was going to cost me. So in the discussions right there, they have to correct that. There's got to be some kind of signal that says it's not only good but it's not challengeable or it is. Obviously that didn't cost us the game. But anyway, [it's] something they've got to fix."
RE: How can they reverse that if there's not a camera at the same place where the referee is? How can you get that reversed?
Nolan: "When he came over, I asked him the same exact question. Other than, can I challenge it? He asked the guy, 'Was it below it?' And they all kind of said it was. But outside of that, I said, 'What views are you going to see? Are they going to be different from what I see?' And he said, 'I'm just going to see what they give me on the monitor.' That was his response. So it's not as if there's a camera, I guess. If there was, he'd have said, 'there was one.' So as the way it's setup now, it's all fine and dandy. Basically what they get to challenge is if you've got a situation like last year where the thing bounces off the cross bar or hits the little machine that's there. Then you get it. Otherwise, it's ineffective. The challenges don't mean anything."
RE: You weren't aware of this before?
Nolan: "You know what? I thought maybe there was something...because I didn't think it was good, to be honest with you. I wanted to hear what he had to say coming over. That's why I also thought that coming over if he said, 'You can't challenge it because it was above the cross bar.' I was going to say, 'Well then I get my challenge back.' But he says, 'No, you're not going to get your challenge back.'"
RE: You mean the upright?
Nolan: "The upright, forgive me."

Perhaps you right and the ref should have told him its not reviewable, but duh! I think most NFL head coaches know that already and didn't Nolan tell us that Marathe was an expert in the rules? Apparently not!
After listening to Nolan's comments about the Field goal Challenge, and the other stupid challenges he made that shows that he is not fit to coach the 49'ers. This team alot better than the 2-4 record indicates. Unfornately, the Niners can't fire Nolan until we get to the bye, and it will be too late. At least we will get a new coach and new quarterback next year.
whatz all the fuzz about challenges, ...it made no difference, we should still have won or tied the game.....
I think we are focusing on the wrong reason we lost this game. Martz' fear of the run and JTO's implosion should not be overlooked.
Obviously, this call was not the reason the 49ers lost. That being said, I swear I've seen a coach throw a challenge flag, and then have the referee tell them it's unchallengeable and let them take their flag back (without losing a challenge). While I admit it's just another thing Nolan has done wrong, I will give him a pass on this for the reason that it's the referee's job to enforce the rules. IMHO, if the coach makes a request to break one of those rules, it is the referee's job to tell them that's something they cannot do. That being said, Nolan certainly shares some of the blame here. What were the odds of that call being overturned? I mean either it was above the uprights, or the referees standing directly under the uprights would clearly have seen if it went in or not. What was the third option Nolan was praying for? I'm not sure.
Hi Matt, If and when Nolan gets fired as head coach of the 49ers who u think would take over as interim coach? Also, besides Bill Cowher what other coaches do you see that is out there that Niners might look at?
I have been defending Coach Nolan for a while now, and I still think we have to blame the players for these losses. The loss in New Orleans was more players than coaching my opinion. The game against New England was about the defense not getting off the feild and JT O'sullivan not playing well. This last loss should not have been. Our defense lost this game. I blame Manusky, Nolan and the defensive players for this. This loss is completely unacceptable.
here's the question. why doesn't coach nolan know the rules of the game? haven't there been enough gaffes over the last four seasons to prove that he's not fully aware of the nfl rule book?
he doesn't understand the rules, he mis-manages the challenge flags and he mis-manages the clock; yet he retains his job. amazing.
Boot The Suit - He's posturing for another trip to Mobile. His rhetoric is getting too hard to stomach anymore.
Please do not send any 49ers coach to Mobile! I'm tired of the so called 'evaluation they can't do.' They can watch it on TV like any other Joe. Boot the Suit!
In my opinion, it is nonsensical to ever challenge a field goal unless it has to do with the cross bar or support post. If the ball is above the top of the uprights, by rule it's unchallengeable. If it's below the top of the uprights, the official underneath would have to be blind (literally) to miss the call.
