The 49ers will honor Hall-of-Fame defender Fred Dean on Dec. 7 at halftime of the game against the New York Jets, the 49ers have announced. But it's not too early to look at the nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2009.

Among the first-time nominees are two former 49ers: defensive tackle Dana Stubblefield and cornerback Rod Woodson.

Niners on the list of 133 "additional nominees" include Eddie DeBartolo, Roger Craig, Russ Francis, Brent Jones, Randy Cross, Richard Dent, Chris Doleman, Charles Haley, Kevin Greene, Rickey Jackson and Reggie Roby. (Did I miss anybody?) Yes, as some readers pointed out . .. I missed Jim Plunkett, Ricky Watters and Wes Chandler.

Bob Hayes, who played one season with the 49ers, has been selected as a senior nominee.

According to the Hall of Fame:

Hall of Fame selectors will choose 25 candidates who will advance as semifinalist nominees. The list of 25 modern-era semifinalists will be announced later next month. The 25 modern-era semifinalists list will be reduced by a mail ballot to 15 modern-era finalists.

The final list of nominees that will be considered for election will consist of the 15 modern-era finalists and the two previously announced senior nominees, Bob Hayes and Claude Humphrey.  Hayes and Humphrey were selected this past August by the Hall of Fame's Senior Selection Committee.

Hayes, a three-time All-NFL pick, amassed 371 career receptions for 7,414 yards and 71 touchdowns during his 11-season career with the Dallas Cowboys (1965-1974) and the San Francisco 49ers (1975). He also returned 104 punts for 1,158 yards and three touchdowns and had 23 kickoff returns for 581 yards.

It's a travesty that Randy Cross isn't in the Hall yet.

oh yeah, FIRST!!

He's listed in the players - but Ricky Watters is probably a 49er worthy of that list.

A few guys you missed:

Jim Plunkett, Wes Chandler, Ricky Watters

It is way too bad that Roger Craig is not in the Hall of Fame. When Michael Irvin gets in on the first ballot and Roger Craig is still not in, there really is something wrong with the process. Roger was a groundbreaking running back (92 catches in a season, and first player with 1000 yards rushing and receiving in a season) and an impact player on three Super Bowl champion teams. Unbelievable in my not so humble opinion.

Roger Craig started as full back! First to have 1000 in rushing 1000 in receiving in a Year. I think the thing that keeps Rodger out is the fumble in the NFC title game in 1991.

Eddie D has to go, he and Coach Walsh changed how organizations organize, from how you treat your players to how you go through the week to how you act as a contributor to the community, you can go on and on about how he changed how football works today.

Chuck Haley has got to go, the guy was an ANIMAL! This should be a no brainer.
Chuck and Eddie should be locks.

since when should a fumble keep a player out? Yes, it was at a bad time but I think the commitee is looking at their whole career!

Roger Craig definitely should go. He redefined the FB position as part of the WCO trend of the early 80s, then ran for 1500 yds as a HB.

Randy Cross is just short. He was very good, but the HOF is the place for great and best, not just very good.

Bruce Smith and Rod Woodson are worthy among the first timers. Both absolutely dominated at their positions.

Hayes changed the game in the 60s. So he makes sense.

Ray Guy was the best punter ever, and was a huge impact player for the Raiders in terms of field position. He should be in.

Haley was outstanding and is deserving, but Derrick Thomas may have been even better.

Ronnie Lott was a monster, but Kenny Easley was just as good. He needs to be in too.

That probably maxes out this years class. Tasker, Harold Jackson, Eddie D and most of all Clark Shaughnessy should really get consideration asap though.

what about guy mcintyre? he should be on the list

Many of those 49ers are very deserving of the honor. I have always felt Eddie Debartolo deserves the honor, along with Craig, and some others.

Roger Craig is perhaps the only player in the history of the NFL to redefine not one but two different positions. He was the first true pass-catching fullback, and more importatntly the first halfback who was asked to run AND block AND catch (making him the first back to be useful on all three downs, a revolution in its own right).

Plus if there were a HOF for work ethic and being a team player, Craig would be the first one in.

Hey you,

First, I want to start this letter off by saying it was nice seeing you Sunday. I really did have a good time at the beginning but like so many times before it just gets weird and sometimes really bad at the end, with me yelling and screaming. I didn't even drinking this time, so we know that's not the reason. I wanted to do this in person, I did but I just felt like it was something that needed to be done now and since I wouldn't see you again until after your bye week, well... I am doing it now. Listen, its really not you... Its me. It is. I just don't really have the time in my life to continue to wait for you to start winning. Every off season I wait and watch diligently as you tell me how much better you're going to be and that you really are trying and then EVERY season I am left depressed, embarrassed and disappointed. Well I think its just gonna be best for me to send you all of your stuff, the jerseys, the ticket stubs and if it was possible for you to mail me back all of the lost time I spent trying to be the best fan I could be, that would be great! Sorry, that was cruel but I'm just so done right now... Remember all of the crazy times at the beginning? You were wild back then! You had a string of 17 seasons where you won at least 10 games and how can we not forget all of the amazing trophies and records you broke... Ah, those were good times. We couldn't get enough of each other, I would see you on ESPN everyday and you really took care of yourself back then, Pro Bowlers galore, big free agent moves that actually worked out and that swagger; man you had a swagger.... Now you barely have 2 Pro Bowlers and 1 of them is a punter.... A PUNTER, you never had to punt back in the day. I just can't do it anymore San Fran, the downs just are too severe and its been a long time since I've had an up. I watched you Sunday actually lose to a HORRIBLE Sea-chickens team and well, it was the last straw. I knew when JTO through the pick for the touchdown that this was gonna be the last time we did this, I mean formally. Sure we can be friends and I imagine I will see you from time to time on the ESPN highlights and I do have a couple 9ers on my fantasy teams so we still have that to chat about but really this is a weak mans attempt at closure. I know I probably will still check up on you and I ask that you not email me because I don't want to be tempted to just be disappointed again. You have a lot of work to do on yourself right now and I hope you do... If you ever clean up your act and really live up to your potential, you know where to find me.

Disappointed Fan

I think this is a very sad way to 'preserve' a sellout and hold people in the Bay Area hostage with SLOPPY football. The Yorks have to face the reality we are going to have a local blackout and choices are Rams/Jets/Redskins. The Yorks should just live with it and see the reality of how bad this team is. If the rumor on Denise York is true that 'she wants out' (my apologies for not finding the link source, but have heard it on Mike Sando's ESPN blog the 49ers), I wish the Yorks would just surrender the team to Larry Ellison or Steve Young and end the mockery. I as a fan am so tired of this. I ask and beg for a local blackout so the fans can see real football. Giants/Steelers played a real game of football and we got the 49ers/Hawks bore fest, which is so sad that nobody takes a stand like this. Do whatever it takes not to go to anymore home games unless we start winning. You go tthe power people, use it.

It is a freaking' tragedy that Guy McIntyre is not on that list. 3 time Super Bowl winner, 5 time Pro Bowler (all in a row from '89 to '93) and 3 times All-Pro.

Here's wishing success to Roger, Brett, and Randy

Just read that Ford Field in Detroit FINALLY got a home blackout for the Det Lions. You wonder how much further are we from our 'first home blackout' on the 49ers? I mean, there was so much 'joy' that fans in Detroit actually probably got to watch the Giants/Steelers game rather then their Lions.

Something has to happen to make the Yorks sell this team. Why not try a home blackout?

Ricky Watters has definite HOF stats, but he again has been his own worst enemy. If Watters stays with the 49ers for 2-4 more years, the Niners I guarantee would have won at least 1-2 more superbowls and he would be "in like flynn". But he had to show the world that he was no second fiddle to Steve Young (SB MVP) and that he could toil in no mans land and run his way into obscurity with the Philly Me-agles and the Seattle Me-hawks... Serves him right.

Who is Matt?

Matt Maiocco is in his 14th year covering the 49ers. He has reported for The Press Democrat since 2000. He is a three-time winner of Pro Football Writers of America awards. Rotoworld.com ranked "Instant 49ers" as the No. 2 NFL team blog in the country in 2007. Maiocco has written two books, "Roger Craig's Tales from the 49ers Sideline" and "San Francisco 49ers: Where Have You Gone?" Matt can also be heard regularly on KNBR (680-AM) during the season.
