Interim coach Mike Singletary had an eventual first game as interim head coach in the 49ers' 34-13 loss to the Seahawks at Candlestick.
Singletary had a blistering media session that I'm sure will live on for a quite a while in video archives.
He benched the quarterback that offensive coordinator Mike Martz had been saying was doing an outstanding job. (In fact, Martz acted like the media were a bunch of buffoons for even asking the question last week.)
Singletary benched tight end Vernon Davis and then banished him to the locker room. After the game when Davis wanted to speak with Singletary, the coach told him, "No, you don't want to talk to me."
After it was all over, Singletary apologized to the players. He also apologized in his opening comments to the media.

Singletary tore into Davis in his postgame remarks. Singletary called Davis off the field after he was called for unnecessary roughness, a 15-yard penalty, after he caught a 7-yard pass late in the third quarter. He was sent to the locker room.
"It was something I told everybody at the very beginning of the week," Singletary said, his voice growing louder and louder. "I will not tolerate players that think it's about them when it's about the team. And we cannot make decisions that cost the team, and then come off the sideline non-chalant. No. You know what? This is what I believe. I'm from the old school. I believe I'd rather play with 10 people and get penalized all the way until we have to do something else, rather than playing with 11 when I know that right now that person is not sold out to be a part of this team. It is more about them, than it is about the team. Cannot play with them. Cannot win with them. Cannot coach with them. Can't do it.
"I want winners. I want people who want to win."
Did you kick him off the field and go to the locker room?
"I told him he'd do a better job for us right now by taking a shower and coming back and watching the game than going back in the game," Singletary said. "Simple as that."
When asked if Davis would be the 49ers' starting TE in two weeks, Singletary said, "We got to think about that."
Davis was not available for comment after the game.
* * *
And when asked who is starting quarterback will be, Singletary said, "We got to think about that, too."
Singletary said it was his decision to bench J.T. O'Sullivan after his interception late in the second quarter was returned 75 yards for a touchdown. When asked if he got resistance from Martz, Singletary said he thought Martz knew him well enough from going through this past week that there was no need arguing.
Singletary said he'll revisit who starts for the 49ers in a couple weeks when the team returns after the bye week. "I think right now, Shaun Hill, today in that situation gives us a better chance of winning," Singletary said.

INJURY REPORT: TE Delanie Walker (elbow sprain) is scheduled to undergo an MRI examination on Monday. T Barry Sims (ankle), RS Allen Rossum (hamstring) and WR Arnaz Battle (foot) all have sprains. They were listed as questionable on the preliminary injury report.

UPDATE (6:04 p.m.): Vernon Davis did speak with some members of the media, after all. Davis talked about the confrontation with Seahawks safety Brian Russell and what happened between him and Singletary.
"I made a play, tapped the guy on his chin -- I didn't mean anything by it -- but they called a flag. He was talking trash, of course. I didn't take it personally.
"I came back to the sideline and Coach (Singletary) said, 'Vernon, you can't do that, you have to be smart.' Coach Singletary told me to go sit down, and after a while, he told me to just take a shower and take it in. He's a good coach. Coach Singletary is an emotional guy, just like myself. He wants to win, and I did exactly what he told me to do. He is the head coach, and I listen to him."
When asked if it surprised him to be pulled off the field, David said, "Yeah, it did. I didn't know what was going on. I already know about Coach Singletary. He wants to win, and he's a hard-working guy. He won't tolerate anything."
Do you think you did anything wrong?
"No, not in my eyes," Davis said. "I don't think I did anything wrong. If the coach thinks I did something wrong, then I have to listen to him. He's the boss."

I'm liking Singletary already.
Demanding more of the players, more of himself. Holding players accountable, not letting them get comfortable in their starting positions if they aren't performing.
Feels like we finally have a real leader in this organization. Role model for Jed York.
34 sacks given up in 8 games. They lead the NFL again. We got one sack today on defense for a total of 14 so far. That is a 20 sack difference. That says it all. Coach Singletary is the real deal, now we need a GM.
Well, this is sure a change from the Nolan-style press conference. Three cheers for Big Mike, and it seems to me that the odds of Martz being on the staff next year are clearly zero. Amen.
Lets say Vernon Davis does not respond well to his benching and we need to cut ties with him at the end of the year. What are the salary-cap ramifications?
Once again VD acts like an uncontrollable idiot on the field. And THAT wasn't his only penalty today. Besides jumping -- illegal procedure is his forte -- he missed the block on the seconfd play thst led to JTO's first fumble. Plus, VD still can't break a damn tackle. Best play was trying to chase down the DB on that interception. But more than that, the OL keeps looking worse and worse: they're not jelling, they're jelly. And that was the same ol' (lack of) defense we've had to bear all year: no pass rush, CBs well off the line, and Mark Roman getting outrun by anyone and everyone.
I can't imagine McCloughan keeping his job after they year. Only two impact players in 4 years of drafts and F.A. acquisitions. Just because McCloughan improved the team since the horrendous work of Donahue doesn't mean he should be around after this year. 4 years is enough of this.
We suck in so many areas it's painful to watch. How long till the draft???
Time to stop putting $ in the York's pockets and to make a collective statement. These years of futility are unacceptable. I'm not buying a ticket till this ship is on the right path.
VD has all the raw talent but lack of team concept.
He is too easy to be pull down from the first tackle.
His lower body balance is too week to be a receiver.
Perhaps, he has a stronger upper body that can block
but can't break tackle. I am looking forward to see
this team play after the buy, we need more emotion
from the player to want to win. Showing up on Sunday
is not good enough...
After listening more carefully to the press conference, I think Singletary's most revealing statement may have been "I am not going to try to make something work that doesn't fit." Sounds like a subtle indictment of what he inherited in both the offensive and defensive strategies???
Way to take responsibility for your actions yet again, Vernon. "Oh woe is me. The referee misunderstood me chucking someone on the face mask, what I really doing was complimenting his facial hair."
I love what Singletary did. Man up and sit that fool on the bench.
I like the moves of pulling JT and benching Vernon. It shows the that Mike is the boss, has a zero tolerance policy for unnecessary behavior, and that he's a quick decision maker, all very good traits as a head coach. He's putting his stamp on the team.
And the niners need to do a better job on the defensive side. That's a HUGE issue, besides JT's turnovers of course. One of the key weaknesses is lack of pressure on the quarterback. Put Justin Smith in at defensive tackle permanently, and use P. Haralson as the defensive end/elephant dude. The niners need to mix it up just a little more with different blitzes. Too vanilla on defense right now, which just isn't working, especially when they lack a consistent pass rush.
S Hill played really well in the 2nd half. Reminds me of how he played late last year when he played in place of A Smith. He gets the ball out quicker, which allows him to avoid sacks and fumbles. And he like to take what the defense gives him, which means he doesn't mind throwing underneath and moving the ball and which means fewer interceptions. I think S Hill should get the nod at quarterback in the next game.
If you take away JT's two costly turnovers, and if you add some pass rush to possibly cause a fumble or interception by Seattle, then you have a very competitive, close game.
VD is like a 15 year old kid who thinks he is doing what everybody else does and that makes it ok. Needs a kick in the ass-- and maybe, if we are lucky, he will get it.
The Niners played the first half as if they were a rudderless ship, not sure what kind of team they are, or who is in charge. Martz impressed me with the way he changed his calls once Hill took over. I was glad to see Jason Hill and Baas contributing. Singletary did a good thing in removing Davis and sending him to the lockerroom. I'll but curious to see what other personnel moves he makes.
Wait wait wait... did Vernon say "I don't think I did anything wrong?" What a loser.
Wow.......... Our defensive AND offensive lines are a joke....getting worse by the game.....pushed around....beat to the punch on the edge.......Sims, Wragge, Snyder, Bass, Soap, Franklin, are outmatched......not strong enough.......not stout enough to win in the trenches....We need to draft MUCH better or we are NOT going to improve.......Snyder and Bass are both back ups at best.....It's not that complicated....start with the O and D lines and build the team from the inside out. We will have to tap free agency to get a quick infusion of talent.....and there are several really good D tackles and O lineman that will be available in 09........Watching Snyder get burned over and over today was really hard to watch.....he was getting schooled all day. With regard to Vernon Davis.....why don't they just make him a full back? Then you can just hand him the ball.....He could utilize his blocking skills to help Gore pound the rock and get some nice screen passes in the flat......it's a no brainer......besides, he's the second best tight end on the team and it's not even close.
Matt, I was listening to KNBR and they were saying that Mike Nolan was ripping Alex Smith on NFL Gameday. Have you heard anything on this? I haven't been able to find what was said.
Genghis - "And he like to take what the defense gives him, which means he doesn't mind throwing underneath and moving the ball and which means fewer interceptions." - Think back to the preseason and training camp. It's not that he likes to 'take what the defense gives him'... it's the fact that he's a dumpoff MACHINE! He rarely, if ever, throws the ball deep. As someone mentioned in a previous post, that will work when the other team is playing with a lead, but probably won't work when a team knows it doesn't have to worry about anything getting behind them.
Vernon said "I made a play, tapped the guy on his chin -- I didn't mean anything by it -- but they called a flag. He was talking trash, of course. I didn't take it personally."
Are you kidding me? I hate you not being a man and standing up for the fact that you screwed up. You did not tap the guy on his chin. I watched the game and the ref called it right.
I hope the team suspends you and you figure out that you are 1) a draft pick bust and 2) a liar.
The entire team needs to get their heads out of their backsides and play better.
JT O'Sullivan is this years Rex Grossman. 17 turnovers our of the teams 20. WTF is that.
Miek Martz system needs refining.
VD's penalty was dumb but also pretty ticky tack for a 15 yd personal foul. However, Singletary should send Mark Roman to the showers. What a waste of a uniform. 1 pick in his 40 games for the niner's. Aren't free safetys supposed to make plays at least once in awhile. Don't get on the other db's for poor play when the free safety plays invisible.C'mon Mike, don't just get mad at Vernon, he didn't lose the game for you. You've got a lot of other culprits that would be more valuable taking showers.
I loved how Singletary handled the VD situation.
However, there was one judgement call during the
game I strongly disagreed with. On that 4th down
right before half-time we should have kicked a field
goal instead of going for it. That would've made it
a one touchdown game at that point.
Whatever the case, it's nice to hear some honesty
from the head coach for a change. We can't judge
the game plan or anything like that until the game
after the bye when Singletary will have had more
time to make real changes. Then we'll see.
My take on JTO.....
the guy has a chip on his shoulder and is therefore very stubborn and selfish and has been trying WAY to hard to try to show the world that he's worthy of being a starter in the league. If the guy would just settle down and remind himself that perfection is not possible, he'd be much better off. I still think Shaun Hill gives us the best chance to WIN and that is why I give BIG props to Mike Singletary.....It's about GD Time!!!
Both of Singletary's moves were correct today. I don't think Hill is a long-term solution, but he may have to get us through the next few games - O'Sullivan's just can't protect the ball, and as much as I like him, he isn't ready to be a starting QB in this league right now. I wonder how many reps he really got in practices over the years as the third-stringer on those teams - same deal with Shaun Hill, honestly.
I think everyone likes Singletary's style; let's see if he can shape this bunch into a winning team.
Here's what Mike Nolan said today on the NFL Network when asked about the selection of Alex Smith with the No. 1 overall pick in 2005:
“I’ve never looked back until this week when I had some time to reflect. It’s hard to say if the information would have been different... what we would have done...choosing Aaron Rodgers, that sort of thing. At the same time, we made the decision based on the information that we had at that time. It’s been unfortunate in Alex’s case because he’s been hurt for two of his four seasons in the NFL. He did play a lot early, but we never seemed to get over the hump. He’s had some outstanding coaches, several different (offensive) coordinators, which you could look at as a negative, but when you’ve had coordinators such as Mike McCarthy, Norv Turner and Mike Martz, you’ve had some outstanding coaches and that should only bode well for you and make you a better player.”
--Matt M.
Did anyone see Davis's lack luster half ass block on Kerney that caused a fumble. If VD would have put any effort into that block there wouldnt have been a fumble.
What an idiot.
Singletary may have taken notes from Walsh, but he sure reminded me of Ditka.
What we saw today was the bringing of the rot to the surface that had set in over the last two years from Mike Nolan's weak leadership, management, and coaching/teaching/motivation skills. The first two years of Nolan's tenure were strong...the team improved with almost every game and they were a fairly cohesive unit. The last year and a half is where things fell apart. Norv Turner leaving was the whammy that set it in motion and Hostler made it stick.
All the different groups on the team are all over the place (offense, defense, special teams) with their development, decision-making, and execution and I think Singletary's strength and firmness in decision-making will get this rabble under control.
It took today's game to show where all the weaknesses really were so even though we lost I take it as a positive...now Singletary probably has an idea of what needs fixing and how badly. I think we're lucky to have a bye week where he has two full weeks to start molding the team in the image it needs to be in.
I think everyone can agree that we have some talented individual players, but where we lack is the leadership to bring it all together and get them to play as a unit. Hopefully we see a completely different team in two weeks...
The fact that Singletary had made a terrible choice to go for it on fourth down when a field goal makes it a one posession game and the fact that he doesnt "know" who will be the starting qb in two weeks when it is 100% obvious leads me to believe he is a chip off the old block...nothing will happen this year except us securing another top 5 pick. Please get Mike Holmgren in SF next year we dont deserve to have to hinge our hopes on guys like JTO and Nolan and Singletary is more of the same.I may sound crazy but time will show it all....
Singletary is the man and I hope we lock him up to
a long term contract. Mr. Holmgrem should be pursued
to replace the inept Gm McCloughan. Martz will be
gone and so will Smith and O'Sullivan. This should
be an interesting off year and draft. I hope Nate
Davis is available and our selection.
Singletary is the MAN! Ok Yorks, don't mess this up. Keep Singletary, get a beeter o-line and d-line coaching staff.
Great call benching Davis and JTO. I can anticipate some changes on defense too. They've been giving up way too many points every single game. Maybe it's the scheme, maybe it's the players, but something has got to change and FAST.
looks like the niners got some cojones on the coaching front... FINALLY!!
I wonder if there is a true possibilty of moving Vernon into the fullback role this season and letting Delaney take over the full role at TE.
There appear to be some pretty highly regarded OL (tackles particularly)...no doubt we'll be in a position to get one. Let loose of Jennings. We'll never remember he was here anyway.
I thought JTO'S should have been cut right after the game.
He should be gone in the morning. There is just no excuse for what went on out there today. That was just terrible. Niners win without JTO's
I like VD coming out of the draft, I had know idea that he was such a prima donna. Now he is a VD.
I listen to the Singletary interview on NFL.com, and my goodness you talk about a Man!! Regardless how the season turns out. The current team will know weather they are up to Coach Singletary standards. It looks like he is going to seperate the men from the boyz. Either you walk the walk and shut your mouth or your gone.
I don't think there is any doubt about it, he was paying attention to Coach Walsh, god bless Mike Singletary!!!
I remember when there were a lot of Nolan lovers on this board when he first showed up, too. The Niners got waxed today. They had penalties, missed assignments, and crappy execution. I hope Singletary can be part of the answer, but let's not get carried away. Just because he's calling some guys out does not mean he's a great head coach that we ought to sign for the next five years. He's still got to show that he can organize and implement a winning program. Here's hoping he does so, though.
press conference:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYaDJ-WuuSY
boy oh boy, why couldn't this guy (singletary) have been there at the start of the season. Looks like he has got what it takes. There are so many things wrong that Ijust don't know how to respond. All I can say is what came from across the bay ....just win baby, win!
why is no one talking about PENALTIES? almost every ffield goal the niners got could have been a touchdown but was brought back to nedney because the niners gave up goal line penalties. really troubling to watch them shoot themselves in the foot on every drive
I love it-People want to annoint Singletary and he got his butt handed to him today. This is what a losing culture has done to us-we look at the bright side of 34-13 whoopin'. Singletary might be a good coach but he's in a bad situation, I'm not drinking the kool-aid this time!
All I can say about this team is, we looked pathetic. On Offense we just sucked and got nothing going until Hill came in who played well, but it was to little too late. On Defense we came out after the half and looked as though we were going to turn the corner but then got back to the way we have played on Defense all year.
Bottom Line: We were pathetic!!
Jersey, I'm hoping the bye week affords Singletary and Scot the opportunity to sit down and discuss the coaching staff needs and whether Mike wants anyone added to HIS staff now.
This is Nolans' group, they, including Scot, have done next to nothing positive with the numerous high round picks we've acquired thus far.
It's showing pretty vividly now, how dysfunctional all these 'Best Player Available-Types' look when you don't have a plan, and you can't coach them to function as a unit.
Singletary took 2 HUGE steps today.
1) Martz will not dictate the offense solely,
2) High priced (VD) talent will be expected to WIN, not just go through the motions.
There is indeed a new sheriff in town, and at this point what Nolan put together really hasn't amounted to much.
He's gone, it is what it is right now, and Singletary at least has shown the stones necessary to say business as usual isn't going to be tolerated anymore.
Kudos Mike, it can't get better until ALL the parts are working together, Players and Coaches.
TEAM is what it's about, and Mike at least delivered the message. I have no problem making changes, I just hope coaches are feeling a little heat now too, because the schemes and execution are gonna need a lot of attention if they expect to make a respectable showing against Coach Whiz in AZ in front of MNF audience.
Just saw the VD "personal foul" on NFL Network. That was a BS call. That's the kind of weakass call that would be made in a chippy game to make sure things didn't get out of hand. This wasn't that kind of game and that was anything but a 'vicious' penalty. I'm sure Singletary will see what really happened in the film room and likely apologize to VD (at least clear it up). I understand what he did... I understand why he did it. But it was really unwarranted because the ref NEVER should have made that call. Weak.
Mooch and Deion give there two cents
NFL Network Video/Teams/San Fran/Hawks Niner discussion
By no means am I a cool aide drinker, Mike Singletary is a breath of fresh air. Personally I am tired of inmates running the asylum.
Matt, Staley switching sides today? Was there any discussion about the movement or was it related to the Sims injury specifically?
I will say that Joe isn't above criticism himself since moving to the left side.
This whole group doesn't seem to communicate very well?
Any speculation on whether we see more coaching changes/additions during the bye?
Nolan himself used these tactics when he took over (think Kevan Barlow, etc). If nothing else, I appreciate the post game press conference... was getting so sick of Nolan's meaningless BS-speak. At least Singletary respects the reporters and fans enough to use meaningful language. But it hurts to see the last 4 years go for nothing, and now back to the drawing board, weeding out the losers.
Marc - According to Matt, they lined up in an overloaded offensive line numerous times, with two tackles on the right and VD running as the left tackle. I HIGHLY doubt they would move Staley to the right, as they clearly don't have a better option to cover the blind-side.
Thanks Shootme, I didn't dissect his game blog yet.
I was too bummed to watch the second half too, not a good time to enjoy 49er football lately.
Scot had better start focusing a little more effort on the line play and the players he'll seek to Draft in April.
I watched Red Bryant lay David Baas out several times today too.
I will suggest that Scot has yet to produce his first Hutchinson-type OG in SF too. Is Rachal the guy?
Let's put him in there and see?
This OL is doing an underwhelming job of communicating and executing, so either you change the coaching or change the players, this isn't working too well.
Thankfully there's a bye week to tinker and retool if Mike cares to.
Very curious to see if Baas remains in the starting lineup, whether we see Chilo Rachal and Jonas Jennings on the right side, and more Jason Hill and less Josh Morgan. I'm disappointed with Morgan's drops, although I do realize he's a rookie...I think folks are being hasty in thier judgment of McCloughan's drafts, especially this year's draft. It's normal for DT's to take some time to get it going -- look at Dorsey over in KC, for example.
I continually find myself checking in on this blog and agreeing with many of the posts, and at the same time feeling very frustrated. I think it has to do with the fact that we are only half way through what is doubtless going to be another pathetic season, with no certainty of who the head coach will be next fall, with legitimate concerns about the ability of the gm to consistently identify and acquire real talent (particularly at the qb, receiver and line positions), and with the sickening probability that even if Singletary is retained, and manages to work miracles, we are looking at another year--or more-- of poor-to-mediocre football before we could consistently challenge good teams. Forgive me for venting, but this really is depressing.
After today, how close are we to a local blackout? There's already talk of fans were fairly disgusted, and I wouldn't be surprised if 75% were hawks fans with nothing better to do but come to SF. I don't see a lot of Jet fans, cant' envision 60,000 from LA taking ina 49ers game, and Redskins could be icing on the cake. I see a lot of dark clouds.
I will not blame any of this on Singletary. He's a good trying man. What he did was not any of his fault and he should be retained. I feel Singletary has a good future with the 49ers and can help us. But when teams cannot win, fans just cannot put up with it. It's a sad reality in SF right now.
That's why we're here MarkW, we're Maioccoholics and this is where we vent.
Sadly though, we have to vent in the negative all the time with this dysfunctional example of a football team in rebuilding phase.
Repeat to yourself regularly that we are a dynasty that has lost it's way and, Matt and this blog will keep us all together until they figure out how to find our winning ways again.
OK, ALL TOGETHER NOW, "We are a dynasty that has lost its way, baa, baa, baa. . ."
Geez, I feel better already.
There you go, baa, baa, baa, we are the sheep in seach of a shepherd.
Singletary has a lot of work to do and, I think he's quietly suggesting that it doesn't matter who you are or who brought you here, all bet's are off.
Doesn't matter if Scot or Nolan drafted you.
If you're not here to win, he doesn't need you.
That's how you accept a challenge.
Yes--all true, and especially the part about him having a LOT of work to do. I swear he looked ten years older at half-time than he did when the game started. What a horrible game. Think I'll go sleep it off. Baaaack later.
How about one great big "baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"!
Oh well, my overly optimistic forecast for the
remainder of the year fell at the first hurdle.
Shame tho, coz Carolina came back to beat the Cards.
But, being realistic here, we're going nowhere again this year. Maybe we can fashion some kind of second half
improvement, but man, what a mess. Worst OL performance I can remember seeing...certainly the worst here in San Fran. And what happened to the D? We let the worst O
in the NFC school us. Singletary has his hands full
with this bunch of "players". As for Vernon Davis?
What a tool. The alarm bells rang for me on his draft day when he comes out bawling his eyes out...what a display of emotional retardation...and it's not gotten any better, has it Vernon? Oh well, lets focus on the positives. "Positives?"...said in Jim Mora voice..."positives?"...ok, so there aren't any. Likelihood is that no matter how well Singletary
a new broom sweeps away all this crap in the offseason (new broom being a new GM, new HC and a whole new bucnh of coaches).
Matt, any chance you can get this blog fixed?

I hear that TJHooker. Was he crying because he didn't want to be here? I got that impression myself, but worse then hindsight is the lack of improvement he's made since he arrived?
It's the same old argument, is it the coaching or lack of a plan? We've collected pieces but nothing seems to fit?
One more headscratcher when you watch guys like Ted Ginn Jr, another arguable strange pick, making contributions as a KR guy and WR?
We have Jason Hill, barely a sniff as a WR, can't he contribute there instead of Delanie?
I keep coming back to the word dysfunctional, I just can't figure out who really runs this circus?
Was it Nolan or Scot? Half of that tandem is still here, so unless this staff gets tweaked over the bye, I agree, we might as well be on the clock and start scouting early.
Also, you might want to try typing your comments in email or notepad or something and then C&P. It does reduce the stress somewhat regarding the missing sentence pieces, LOL.
My, my, but isn't Mike Singletary a breath of fresh air. I like everything he did...including apologizing to the fans for such a putrid performance. I believe after he sees the game film, there'll be more changes, on both sides of the ball. Good for him. It's about time someone stood up and said "enough". Things are going to be different the second half of the season. You go, Coach!
Positives: We did not call strange challenges. We did not waste any timeouts. And there are no complaints about 4th down playcalling. I call that an improvement.
That was just an awful performance. It shows how little progress we've made in the Nolan years. The positive we can see from Singletary is he sees things that are wrong and wants to take immediate action. My concern is that his whole coaching career has been working for Nolan and if he had the answers to make this team better, why didn't Nolan use his ideas. It's one things to recognize something is wrong. It's a lot harder to fix it. Here's hoping Singletary can do it.
Nolan Gone, Scotty Mac NEXT along with JTO. Bring in Holmgren as GM next year, keep Singletary as Head Coach and the 49ers will be on their long journey back. Hill HAS TO BE THE QB for the Rest of the Season. If Martz DISAGREES, He Should Be GONE TOO!
Trade Vernon Davis for Kellen Winslow in the offseason.
We've have more issues than just coaching. Singletary can light fires under whoever he wants to, but until our personnel changes, everything will stay the same. We have a pathetic offensive and defensive line, and no OLB to boot. How do you win in this league if you can't hold the line of scrimmage? I don't care how awesome Singletary is, without good line play we're going to be just awful for a while.
Positives? The defense played FAR better (for most of the game) than it has previously. You've got to figure that they lost 10 points due to the interception (should have been a field goal). Then you've got two fluke plays by leonard weaver... short dumpoffs that were taken to the house, primarily due to poor tackling. You can work on tackling. That's 'fixable'. They had a large number of three-and-outs, which is more than you could say in the previous weeks. Even with poor o-line play, Gore is still moving the rock. This slows the pass rush and opens up play action. Who knows what JTO would have been able to do if Martz would have 'dumbed down' the playbook a bit, only trying to take shots occasionally. I'm usually not an optimist, but the pieces ARE there to become competitive, probably even win the west. Clearly won't happen this year, but if singletary can get the team to play DISCIPLINED football, we could see a pretty big turnaround.
I love Singletary. This is exactly what the 49ers need. It has long been known the 49ers have awful discipline. Look at the sheer number of penalties that take place at key points of the game. Singletary willl fix that.
I don't know if anyone noticed, and maybe I'm reading too much into it, but after Josh Morgan dropped a pass, he was benched for the rest of the series. This is oldschool accountability. You mess up, we're not going to dance around the issue so as not to hurt your feelings, we're going to sit you on the bench, humiliate you, and next time you'll get it right. I love it!
Boy they sure found out fast. I say sign Singletary to a 3 year extension, let him bring in his own staff including OC (Martz and Singletary don't seem to be a good fit) and whatever else he needs. And let's see if this team hasn't turned around within one offseason. I guarantee they will be playing a lot better, if for no other reason than the fact that Singletary will instill discipline to his team.
My initial reaction to Singletary is WOW!!!! I love it!!! Having said that, without wins there is no chance the 9ers bring him back next year. We need a change agent and Singletary seems to fit that bill. My only question is, why didn't he exert that kind of influence on the defense already? The D has been terrible all year and he's a part of that coaching staff. I hope his first act isnt full of sound and fury signifying nothing.
In addition to the fire and passion from this coach, that is the first time in over 4 years a head coach of the San Francisco 49ers has apologized for a bad game and taken responsibility for the teams performance. Mike Nolan had ZERO accountability. He never took responsibility for a loss. He always blamed players, execution, blah blah blah. Mike Singletary made a huge fan out of me today. I was at the game and it was VERY POWERFUL to see Vernon walking by himself (no one from the team escorted him to the locker room) while the offense was driving down the field. Thank you Mike. Thank you for showing that someone cares in this organization.
Sadly I missed the game yesterday (actually I just didn't feel like watching the Tivo recording after I accidentally saw the final score last night). But I like what I've been reading/hearing about Singletary.
This Yahoo Sports column is particularly interesting.

Basically says that no one in the locker room really listened to Nolan anymore. And some of the veterans were really upset that he let VD get away with his antics.
Sounds like Singletary's post-game locker room speech got everyone's attention. I hope so.
Thanks for posting the link. Definitely a good read.
Hopefully, Singletary can get VD (STD or cancer, you decide) in line. He is starting to worry me with his TO diva antics. Shut up and play ball!
Just to throw my $.02 into the pot, I think Shootme is right: there ARE positives and the Defense might be pretty good if they didn't have to deal with the "charity" organization (to quote Big Mike) we have been fielding in place of an offense. What really bugs me at the moment is my impression that Martz keeps resorting to strategies that the O simply can't execute well. JTO has been flat-out terrible, but he also probably is shell-shocked from the pressure and the hits. Martz dumbed down the calls for Hill and we put together some short-gain plays that led to long drives. Yet he has obstinately refused to do this for O'Sullivan. To quote Singletary's press conference again, 'I'm not going to try to make something work that doesn't fit." What was he talking about if not the offensive game plan? Good coaching means getting the most out of the talent you have available, and while I thought Martz would be good at this, I am beginning to think he is so enamored of big plays and what he HOPES his players can do that he that he is blind to their limits and regards short gain football as beneath his dignity. If I am right about any of this, Martz won't last beyond the end of the season, and maybe not that long.
Wow, he cracked a whip to Morgan too? So that was why B Johnson went in the game. I am liking more and more Singletary's actions! I hope he keeps it up!
Fixed!
There are several things I like about Singletary's approach:
- He's stressing strong OL and DL's. He's put Snyder at RT and Baas at LG. He's also pushing Rachal. On DL, he's pushing Balmer. Not much else he can do there...we need signficant upgrades at DT.
- He's giving a number of young players a chance. Rachal, Morgan, Hill, Zeigler, etc. He's finding out who the contenders and pretenders are. He demoted JTO and promoted Shaun Hill.
