And interim coach Mike Singletary pulled no punches during his first halftime speech - but he did pull down his pants.
A team spokesman today confirmed a report by
The halftime talk went something along the lines of . . . "We're getting our tails whipped out there, now let's get back out there," according to Salkin.
Singletary is not available to the media until Monday. He has not released a statement to address the incident. When asked if Singletary is embarrassed by the incident, Salkin said, "There are other ways he could've done it. He knows that."
Oh, and by the way, he was wearing boxers.
This anecdote came to light on a blog by Dan Bickley of the

UPDATE (12:39 p.m.): Singletary spoke with 49ers.com and had the following comment on his halftime show:
"I used my pants to illustrate that we were getting our tails whipped on Sunday and how humiliating that should feel for all of us. I needed to do something to dramatize my point; there were other ways I could have done it but I think this got the message across. I am excited about having the team back at practice on Monday so we can get back to work."

Nice, maybe we should all do it the next time our team stinks it up.
Really? why is this worth a story in itself?
Seriously, I agree with loosescrew...
I hate to bring up the race card, but...
Good thing this didn't happen during Charles Haley's tenure...
But what?
Matt -
Is this really news? Who cares? The teams are entirely naked after the game. There's never been a report on showering. Is this all the dirt they can come up with? Please. Media bias in the election is bad enough. Does Singletary favor spreading the wealth, too?
I know things are slow because of the bye but is this really news worthy? I don't care if he gives his talks doing naked jumping-jacks as long as he gets this mess turned around.
Do I actually hear people thinking this pants dropping thing is no big deal? Do you also think it was a good idea? It may not be news but it says a lot of bad things to me about judgement, self control and leadership on Coach S.'s part. Did this help his credibility? For a guy who some think is such a motivational speaker, this is the best he could come up with? What else are we going to hear about? Now I hope he appologized to the team and management as well as the fans after the game. The one point I agree with is why do I need to know about this? Talk about dirty laundry!

It may not be news buts it says a lot of bad things to me about lack of judgment, maturity and self control on Coach S.’s part. For such a great motivational speaker this is the best he could come up with? What else are we going to hear about? What I do agree with is that I do not need to know this kind of crap. Talk about airing dirty laundry!
what happens in the locker room really should stay there...
this isn't news-worthy IMO. Just a coach trying his best to motivate a very embarrassing team to watch if you're a fan...
What I'd like to know is why JTO just kept repeating the same mistakes of not securing the football, weeks after weeks, after weeks...

its a bye week, we sucked for the last 6 weeks...besides mike pulling down his pants there really isnt much to report
Does a coach HAVE to swear to get across a point? No, but I'm sure all do, with the exception of Tony Dungy. It's ridiculous to be critical of a coach for doing such a thing to motivate his players.
Um, of all the problems the 49ers have, this would be by far the LEAST of their concerns.
And by the way, JTO dropped his pants every Sunday for the past 8 weeks.
Matt,
Is there any chance the 49ers sign Brian De La Puente to the active roster? He just got released by the Chiefs. He looked great in pre-season and considering our woes on o-line, we shouldn't let talent get away from us.
…and the 2008 Charles Haley award goes to…
What is the point of bring this up?
This is like Sarah Palin reporting!!
Who give a fly F...
Am I reading Matt's page or is this CNN or the Huffington Post. Pretty useless.
This about does it for me regarding this site...
This is much worse for Singletary than you all think. There will not be an column written about him, or a radio show about him, that fails to refer to this. He is not there for his x's and o's, he's there for his persona, his hard-nose aura. That goes out the window after "Murph and Mac" make fun of him for the zillionth time about dropping trou. Mark my words.
I'm with Stampede. If Singletary wants to show his team what they look like when their ass is hanging out, who cares? The real issue is,if they treat us to another performance like the one with Seattle, will the stadium crew have enough barf bags to handle the overflow?
I guess the dropping of the pants was somewhat a motivation because we were only outscored 14-10 in the second half. We might have won if he dropped his boxers.
Gee whiz, in the WWE, Pat Patterson did an incident like that as a joke and nobody made a freaking big deal out of it. What Singletary did, no freaking big deal. Know why? Because I don't give a crap what he did or what he said. If this team wants to play like a high school/pop warner team, then get treated like one by Singletary. All Mike Nolan would do is roll the eyes, or stand around looking like a stiff.
Unless the NFL feels this is an incident, who cares?
Rich - If he can get respect, passion, and wins out of his team, I doubt Singletary will give a **** what a couple of radio jocks say about him.
Now professional football locker rooms need to be politically correct? Come on...let's sac up for a change. The public outcry over this perfectly illustrates what's made us so soft as a society.
I agree with shootme... If coaches need to care what those radio host say about coaching team, there are some problem with the coach. What do those radio host know about coaching a football team. They only care about getting attraction to their (non sense) talk show. More people talk about them, more exposure they get for their show. That is the real intention...
Matt posted this article because several people asked about it on the previous post. Thanks Matt for again following up on a question several people asked. Now, how about your political survey? I imagine the results closely follow racial lines of those surveyed.
If I was a player, I don't think I can take Singletary seriously from here on out. The image of Singletary angrily walking into the locker room, shouting as he struggled to unbutton his belt drop "trou" and proceed to try and inspire? I would struggle to hold in my laughter while his pants are to his ankle, and think to myself is this what this organization has been reduced to. What's next....Paraag walking into the booth with a thong?
Its inappropriate
Matt- Thanks for the report. I think it helps us understand how Singletary thinks and operates. Personally, I don't care if he whispers or shouts, swears or not, dresses or undresses. I'm only disappointed it didn't seem to help. Of course, maybe it did, and the second half would have been much worse.
If he showed only one cheek, does that mean he thought that a 4-3 would work better against the Seahawks in the second half? It's all about gap assignments. The word ASSignments was used intentionally. Curious to know how many cheeks were involved in the "inappropriate" demonstration.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! This is the funniest thing i've heard in a while.
This incident reminds me of the high school coach back east somewhere whose team was on a 5 game skid. He gathered his players in the locker room, dropped trou, grabbed his meat and his sack, and said: "if you guys wanna start winning games, you have to grow a pair of these"...
I guess you can say he's trying to "crack" his way into the head coaching.
Sando from ESPN.com has a really good point. Singletary risks becoming a punchline in his own locker room. Players eventually won't respect him.
who really cares about this? This is just a media whore story....
what happens in the locker room should stay in the locker room.
Thing players have an incredible oppurtunity to play for one of the best players ever to play the game and if they can't get up for that, they have no business being in the league.
The Niners franchise is a 53 man roster
for a punchline. Any player that does
not respect Coach Singletary needs to
cut a trail. This is a non story and
the fact NFL football has taken the fun
and a portion of the physicality from
the game makes me wonder if what is next
is the political correctness of the
lockeroom along with the shouting of
profanities.
Singletary has threatened the team that if they play poorly against the Cardinals in the MNF matchup he will bring in Denise York to drop her pants.
hahahahahahahaha..lol...
I hear Al Davis may now watch the game and gather up some ideas for Tom Cable. Now that's a scary thought!
That must've been a funny halftime to have Singletary with his pants down berating the team!
I hear Jed York may drop his pants as well.
