Schein: "What happened with the Niners at the end of the Monday night game? I mean, look, I was highly critical. John was highly critical. Everybody was highly critical. We could talk about the clock management. We could talk about the play selection. What did you see at the end of that game?"
Nolan: "Well, obviously, I'm not privy to the information on why they didn't spike [the ball] to stop the clock. But outside of that, at the very end, which is taking some criticism, the one thing I did notice is everyone assumed, it looked to me, that the ball was going to be spotted at the half yard line. At least that's what I thought San Francisco was thinking at the time. And watching TV I kept thinking to myself, 'Now, guys,' - because I was kind of pulling for them - I said, 'Make sure you know exactly where that ball is.' Well, anyway, as it turned out the play called was assumed that the ball was where it was. There's one other factor, though, that I thought was, and I don't know if the officials are going to talk about it, but that is when they do make that decision they walk up to the quarterback, and they say, 'The ball is going to be at the two-and-a-half [yard line] and when I start the clock, it's going to run. You'd better be ready to go.' There's not a lot of time in between there where they can get back and say, 'Wait a minute, the ball is where? Well, let me change the play.' It was a real fast operation once it came back on the field but outside of that, as we were talking about earlier, you should be prepared for all those situations. It's unfortunate the way it came down for them, but you really have no one to blame it on but yourself. You can't start pointing fingers everyplace else. You have to be ready for that stuff because you do practice it, and the Niners do practice it. When it happens like that you're going to take criticism as we all do."
Riggins: "I'm still confused because I saw that play ran again yesterday. The TV showed that a flag that had been thrown on the play preceding where they looked to see if he was down by contact. And it was never explained. Have you ever heard any follow up on that?"
Nolan: "Here's what I'm going to say about that. I'm going to change it a little bit on you and I'm not going to answer your question but I want to say this. On the last two drives, you talked about last night's game and how the two minute situation going down looked so methodical and everybody had their, it was just all very planned out. It looked good by all [standards]. It looked good by play call. It looked good by the other thing. Whether it was Arizona trying to keep the ball at the end of that game last week or the 49ers drive, there was more frantic kind of involved in that. And I don't know if you sensed that same thing but it kind of was that way. And the other thing was there were flags on the field picked up [or] dropped. Last week's game I'm talking about. I don't know how many times I saw a flag on the field. I think there were two, it may be three times, I know two times where the flag was on the field, they picked it up [and] waved it off and said, 'No flag,' or didn't talk about it like you said. So from officiating on down it was a little bit like everyone looking at each other saying, 'What was that about? Wait a minute, how about that one? What about this?' There's a lot of questions in that, that were unanswered I guess you could say."
Geezus. He's no more understandable as a guest than he was as a coach.
I agree. Gone 3 weeks and he's STILL talking in circles. Good riddins already.
I didn't know Palin was doing football interviews
Huh?
Thats funny, i was listening this morning to sirius and this transcript sounds exactly like what it was live.. Wasn't taken out of context at all. He talked for five or so minutes about this and absolutely said nothing.. And that annoying Adam Schein kissed his ass at the end saying something like, "as always, great interview from 9er ex-coach and NFL anyalist."
HUH!!!!!!!! And we wonder why the coaches upstairs seem confused on these replays. 3 1/2 years listening to Nolan on what to do must have fried their brains.
I think Nolan missed his calling, sounds like he'd fit right in as an NFL official or atleast an assistant to Mike Periera. Spin doctors that leave you dizzy and/or nauseous.
I am really happy to have Singletary. I just don't understand what Nolan is saying ever. I feel like I have to read it 2 or 3 times and decifer some strange code. I hope the niners can beat the rams. I heard on NFL Live, No Stephen Jackson this week!
Wow, amazing how Nolan still talks about the 49ers. When is he going to get a new NFL job so he can FORGET about the team he SHAFTED?
NOlan needs to SHUT UP.
All I want to know is what NFL team will give Nolan a defensive backs coaching job?! Surely he won't get a head coaching job or defensive coordinator job in the NFL.... perhaps college or high school.
The more Nolan talks, the more we see why he wasn't successful and wasn't going to be successful.
I don't even know what to say. Thanks, Matt...I needed a good laugh heading into the weekend.
Next HC of the 49ers...Russ Grimm. His Offensive Coordinator will be...himself or Norv Turner.
Sounds like Obama. He makes a lot of noise, but nothing is actually said.
Envision the line up in the aisle in Airplane the movie when everyone is waiting to pummel the hysterical passenger? Put Nolan in that seat. And, Oh, by the way, I speak jive.
Any wonder why this booth of ours functions like it does?
Ladies and Gentlemen, your 2008 SF Dysfunction9ers say adios to Commander Nolan of the Space Program.
Have a nice journey coach, wave when you reach your Uranus.
dmatt – I think you meant he sounds like Palin. ;)
Nolan is sort of pathetic. You would think he would keep his mouth shut and move on. It bothers me that he is talking with Martz and most likely Singletary. I hope they are not taking advice from him. Nolan, You Got Fired! Your record was 18-37, what you say is as worthless as your record.
Probably need to rebuild the entire office & coaching staff. I'm pulling for Sing, but outlook not so good.
Matt heard you on KNBR @ 5pm. Do you think there is any chance Singletary finds an OC like Indianapolis or New England has? Those are defensive coaches, whose OC's stick with them and are very successful. They've maintained offensive continuity. To me, it doesn't seem impossible. The chance might be small, but do you think there is a chance?
Enough of Nolan already. I am tired of the negative Singletary talk. I am excited about going out on Sundays again! I know hes the reason we ran the football more last week. He had to tell Martz we needed to kick the field goal as well. You know if Nolan was here Martz would be out of control. O Sullivan would still be starting and we would have 50 turnovers. At least Hill finished strong and put us in position to win. I liked that. Mike Martz is the oc and could not handle a simple spike without changing persnnel. Martz needs to go at seasons end. I love Singletary and what he brings. Scot McCloughan also needs to go. We need strong GM.
Fired and still collecting a paycheck from the team. Go figure? He's a chimp on NASA Space Mission now. Satellite Radio is as close he's gonna get I think. In his mind he's still gonna make the playoffs this year and win the Senior Bowl.
I feel the same way.
Mike in SF, I'm still trying to figure out if Martz and JTO are ever going to come close to what Warner has accomplished?
Makes you scratch your head when Martz glows about JTO when all he seems to do is rush everything, while Shaun calmly executes the play that's called? Strange, strange, strange.
Kudos to Singletary for making the call to sit him, Nolan as we know, played with the blinders on, or maybe the sunglasses were mirrored on both sides?
Singletary at least isn't bashful and gets in their faces.
Marc-NJ49er, I liked the senior bowl comment. It really gave Nolan the edge in the draft, he did an outstanding job drafting. I just get the feeling if Singletary gets his shot, in the offseason were going to see some serious personnel changes. I liked seeing Chilo Rachal, he looks like a beast. With he and Baas our interior is getting stronger.
for a second i thought it's monday 12.15pm ......
I'm trying to figure out what's funnier; Nolan's interview or these comments. Absolutely hilarious.
Nolan continues to talk nonsense and what's worse, people seem to care about what he says.
That was an Obama answer if I ever heard one! I mean saying a lot real pretty like but...what the hell did he just say.
NOTHING, at least the 49ers are working on Change, and Obama is working on installing the Clinton version 2 administration. Change is coming, it's just with the 49ers. same ole same ole with the demorats!! Hold on to your wallet! Cause change is going to be the only thing in your Pocket.
Please, no personal political or religious views on this blog. Thanks. --Matt M.
Thank you!
huh, you know, huh, you know, wait this was NoWin and not Scotty McClueless, one in the same I guess from a Blogger Standpoint!!
