Zeigler was signed to the 49ers' 53-man roster. The 49ers waived rookie tackle Kirk Barton to make the roster space available for Zeigler, a first-year player who went undrafted in 2007 out of Baylor. Zeigler caught 54 passes for 741 yards and three touchdowns as a senior.
Offensive coordinator Mike Martz dropped some hints on Friday that Zeigler would get the promotion. Zeigler said he had heard the whispers, too. But he said he wasn't going to call his family until he got on a plane to
He can make that call now.
Zeigler has been playing X (or split end), as well as the slot position. He distinguished himself last season on the practice squad with what seemed like a weekly highlight-reel catch. He credits playing baseball as a youngster for his good hands.
"You have to catch the ball in baseball or it'll knock your teeth out," he said.

It's Hill overload here.
I just wrote an article on quarterback Shaun Hill, who is getting ready for his first start of the season. That will be in tomorrow's paper.
In today's paper, I wrote primarily about receiver Jason Hill (no relation to Shaun).

I'm starting to like SIngletary's moves. you know Mike NOlan wouldn't make a call like that. Now let's hope it translates to some wins in the worse way. I would seriously not start either B Johnson or Battle. I bet Hill is going to have some 4 WR sets!
Way to go Mike. Shake things up on the roster and Ziegler deserves a shot. Agreed with Darren that Nolan would have probably kept it status quo till the end of the season.
Hey Matt..have you had a chance to ask Snyder how he feels about being at a tackle position vs guard? I believe I read somewhere that he did play some tackle for us before...if he did how did he look? From what you've observed does he seem like a better fit there?
I think synder is best suited to play OT. He has good feet but not strong enough to play G. If memory serves me correctly, Synder was better at LT than RT but let's hope he can be the man at RT now that he has been assigned one position
i cant believe Ziegler lasted this long on the practice squad. Every team needs a sure handed WR to move the chains and make tough catches in the Red Zone. I would like to see Morgan, Hill, Battle, and Ziegler be our top 4 WR's next year.
Matt If I am not mistaken, Arnaz Battle was also drafted in 03.
Zeigler looked good in preseason.
Matt- I thought they were waiting for someone really good for that open roster spot when they signed Barton? Anyway, glad to hear they are getting Morgan, J Hill and maybe Ziegler some good playing time. We need to see what they can do.
Matt, what are the odds this guy sees
offensive action Monday Night?
You're absolutely correct. Battle was selected in the sixth round of the 2003 draft. Let's face it: That was one heck of a pick from the Donahue era. --
