The 49ers have signed cornerback Jimmy Williams, a second-round pick of the Falcons in 2006. Williams was the No. 37 overall selection in that draft out of Virginia Tech.

Williams, who turns 25 in March, played 26 games in two seasons with the Falcons with seven starts before getting released in June. He did not play in the league last season.

Upon being released, Williams said he felt like he was never given a fair shot by new coach Mike Smith. He acknowledged the that team was "upset" about his weight.

The 49ers worked out Williams. After a thorough background check, the club decided to sign Williams to a contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Great! Let's re-enforce the secondary and get ready for battle with the Cardinals receivers in 09.

Matt, given the timing... does this have anything to do with what Scot saw out of the DBs at the senior bowl?

the best way to get ready to battle the Cardinals receivers is to steal A.Boldin away from them. Fitz is a beast but we could finally double him, along with some pressure to Warner! West is ours!

Let our O' have Boldin with our young crew that would be great!

I know, I know...pipe dreams right? Well a guy can dream can't he?

I hope Im wrong but this seems like another typical Scott Mc Cloughan pick up. Requirements are as follows: must be a beer truck driver or work at Home Depot or be out of football for at least a year or be cut by somebody elses practice squad three times. Again I hope Im wrong and this kid who has done nothing in 2 years turns it around.

Another waste of time. Probably trying to put pressure on some in the secondary. No other reason.

personally I think putting warner on his back is the best way to battle the cardinal receivers. during the 2nd half agaisnt the eagles, they started finally crowding warner and he started to falter. if we can put more pressure on him, he won't have enough time to wait for fitzgerald to clear those across the field routes that he's so good at.

Weren't the Niners considering drafting this guy to begin with?

The best way to beat Warner is to keep him off the field. I think you also need a safety with the range of Polamalu or Reed (a ball hawk) along with a lot of pressure.

This guy is no DeAngelo Hall and he also did not play for another team after being cut.

No one showed interest in the guy then. So why should the Niners?

On the other hand, he is a low risk: if he does not pan out, he gets cut. End of story.

Traj

He probably won't make the final roster, but you never know. How much worse than Roman could he be? Plus Williams is only 24, so he could have some potential with the proper coaching and motivation.

It is being reported on another message board that he was suspended for Marijuana for the first 5 games, so the Falcons cut him. Matt, is that true?

If so, uh oh!! That would almost explain why everyone was avoiding him but not why Jerry Jones is...I'm just saying there may be more to this story.

"This guy is no DeAngelo Hall"

We can only hope.

I really don't see a downside here. Maybe he's a player who just needs a bit of discipline / motivation. He had enough talent to be a second round pick, and the Falcons' first of that year. If not, he's camp fodder. There'll be plenty of that.

Matt, did Williams paly any free safety for the Falcons?

@ Mike N SD

The article linked states at the end that in his second year with ATL they tried him at FS before cutting him.

Testing. I am a new fan from Minnesota

This guy is awful. No focus and a real attitude. Will be gone before camp even starts in July. Maybe Merton Hanks is available. .......me trying to me funny.

Is that Felix UnGr?

The best way to beat the Cardinals in 09 is to score more points than them.

now we dont have to waste a 3rd rd pick on a CB that never played (yes im talking to you Reggie Smith)

You guys are amazing. Every team has a ton of scrubs hanging around during training camp, most of whom stand a snowball's chance in hell of making the team. Bringing in a guy who was projected as a mid first round pick only a few years ago ... if I am not mistaken, many mock drafts had the Niners taking him with their second first rounder that year (the pick they used on Manny Lawson). The guy had talent and a lot of athletic ability at VA Tech. I see no harm in bringing him in and seeing what he can do. If he shows the promise he had coming out of college, then we come out winners. If he demonstrates what got him ran out of town in Atlanta, we cut him along with all the other scrubs who will be driving beer trucks and mixing paint at Home Depot, and we lose nothing. I see nothing wrong with this signing. Quite to the contrary, I give the personnel department a big thumbs up for a heads up move.

when guys lack focus and dicipline, i think going to a new team in a new area is the best way for them to get back to their games, especially if they are talented. singletary seems to be able to focus his guys in on the game and being prepared and he definitely seems like a huge dicipline guy. i'm guessing this isn't a huge money deal, so whatever, we'll see what happens.

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES.

Just a couple weeks ago I was wondering why in the world nobody had picked this guy up. He can run a 4.3 40 while weighing over 210 pounds. YES!

Just keep him away from the weed and this is a GREAT signing.

Matt, how can the niners sign him right now? Isn't he a free agent?

Julian Peppers doesn't want to stay in North Carolina no more. Peppers will become a free agent and wants to go to a team where he can show his athlitic ability. The 3-4 defense. He also stated that he wants to play for a team that runs the 3-4. I say we sign him and that would take care of drafting a rookie DE, and we should also sign WR Plax Buress. He is a big target and makes big plays and then we can just draft players who will be solid back up players.

Question: Matt, how can the niners sign him right now? Isn't he a free agent?

My response: He was a free agent. That's why the 49ers were able to sign him. He wasn't on a team. But he is now. --Matt M.

I understand why the niners signed Williams but why not Dangelo Hall? He's a pro bowl type of guy that just had bad luck with the raiders but who hasn't? The raiders kills players spirits to the point when they don't want to play for them anymore. A very disfunctional organization! But Hall is still fresh and never sat out of football for a year so my guess is that he is in great shape to blanket receivers all day long. Niners need to sign him quick.

Yeah, I know that. What I meant was that I didn't think you could sign free agents until Feb 28th? Is it different for different FAs?
