The 49ers' future offensive coordinator will have an advantage many of his predecessors did not experience.

Because Mike Singletary is considered a new coach, the 49ers are allowed an extra two "voluntary" minicamps, according to an NFL spokesman.

This is a luxury for the new offensive coordinator. After all, Norv Turner (2006), Jim Hostler (2007) and Mike Martz (2008) did not have the additional minicamps because Mike Nolan remained as head coach for each of those seasons.

The veterans will get a head start, as the 49ers plan to have a minicamp prior to the draft. The veterans under contract are expected to convene in Santa Clara in March.

Generally, each team around the league meets for its mandatory full-squad minicamp the weekend after the draft. With the draft scheduled for April 25-26, the 49ers would likely have their rookies and veterans on the field together for the first time in early-May.

Then, the 49ers will have another camp at a later date. The club will also have its organized team activities, which generally takes up most of June.

So while Singletary's search for an offensive coordinator has moved past the one-month mark, the club will have plenty of time in the offseason to adapt to the new guy's system.

The latest name to surface for the 49ers' vacant coordinator position is long-time assistant coach Jimmy Raye. Raye served as Jets running backs coach since 2006. He is not expected to be retained on new coach Rex Ryan's staff.

A long, long, long, long time ago, Raye was an assistant coach with the 49ers. Raye coached receivers for the 49ers under Ken Meyer during the 49ers' 5-9 season of 1977. In his NFL career, Raye has also coached for the Rams (three times), Eagles, Lions, Falcons (twice), Buccaneers, Patriots, Chiefs, Redskins, Raiders and Jets (twice).

He has been a coordinator for five brief stints with the Patriots (1990), L.A. Rams (1991), Chiefs (1998-2000), Redskins (2001) and Raiders (2004-05).

Ok, so far I've been in favor of all the choices, but when we scrape the barrel down to Jimmy Raye it's time to consider the possibility that we're doomed.

Jimmy "Freaking" Raye!!? Are you kidding me? This is becoming a joke now. Are we going after the oldest coaches in the league now? Im starting to question Coach Sing, AND I WAS A HUGE SUPORTER OF HIM!!! I officially worried now and hopefully Hue Jackson doesnt slip away too while we interview the free world.....

Not too excited at all. Looks bad, very bad...

I wonder if Jack Acid is going to post a link stating that the 49ers are interested in Jimmy Raye (ha ha ha!).

Let's hope Hue Jackson gets the nod....

Maybe we should wait until we actually hire an OC and play a few regular season games before freaking out, thinking the world is gonna end? Just a thought...

I like Hue as well, but something tells me that Singletary's "guy" has yet to be interviewed.

I would like to say, I thought Dan Reeves would have been a good O.C. He has a lot of experience under his belt, and never left the football scene. Im hoping Matt's scenario plays out and Montana becomes part of our scene. Or, what about this, Matt Maiocco for a position, Knows enough about football. :)

True or not, the whole process leaves the impression of poor management. At the least, it is not decisive. Any thoughts, Matt?

Matt's post assumes something --- that the Niners HAVE an OC by the time of the first mini-camp. At first I intended this as a joke, but I'm beginning to wonder.

And who is this dude that Matt's more recent post says is being interviewed for QB coach? I thought the OC got to pick his own QB coach.

we dumped one rookie coach so that we could replace him with another rookie coach.

we fired martz so we could replace him with. . . what exactly?

at the same time, shanahan, holmgren, gruden, cower, and shottenheimer are without a team.

is someone up above mad at me for something? what the hell is going on?

Randy in Santa Rosa, you're usually one of the most level-headed people in the comments section. Nothing has changed. Good words.

Matt: Thank you for the homework on the minicamp issue. Important stuff, and a professional response.

One common thread throughout all these searches for an offensive coordinator. NFL coaches move around a lot! Very little/no job security. Jumping from city to city. I don't think they do it for the money, or maybe they do? Can't have any kind of a stable family life. Must do it for the love of the game? What kind of $ does a running backs coach make?

I'm just wondering, how big are two extra voluntary minicamps going to be? it's not like in the old days where in the offseason, athletes just go on vacation or kickback. Athletes nowadays workout throughout the year, some even attend conditioning programs to keep in peak shape in the offseason or to work on their overall fitness and performance.

There is no advantage coaching this team Matt, you of all people should know this.

Matt, thanks for all the updated info. Do you think they will have a OC by end of business today?
And if so, do you REALLY think Jackson will be a GOOD FIT with the Niners?

Who is Matt?

Maiocco has written two books, "Roger Craig's Tales from the 49ers Sideline" and "San Francisco 49ers: Where Have You Gone?" Matt can also be heard regularly on KNBR (680-AM) during the season.
