Billy Wilson, who led the NFL in receptions three times in the 1950s despite playing in the shadow of the 49ers' famed "Million Dollar Backfield," died this morning. He was 81.
Wilson was a member of the 49ers organization for more than 30 40 years. After his playing career, he took positions with the club in coaching, scouting and public relations.
"When you look at what Billy accomplished in his 10 years as a 49ers player, it's quite remarkable," 49ers owner John and Denise York said in a statement. "Considered as one of the greatest wide receivers to ever play the game, Billy's impact on the 49ers organization is far-reaching, not only as player, but also as a coach and administrator. We are grateful for all of Billy's contributions and he will be missed."
The late Bill Walsh campaigned several years for Wilson's enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But Wilson has yet to receive that honor.
When Wilson retired in 1960, only the Packers' Don Hutson had more receptions. The 49ers had six players from the 1950s elected to the Hall of Fame (Joe Perry, Hugh McElhenny, John Henry Johnson, Y.A. Tittle, Leo Nomellini and Bob St. Clair). Yet, Wilson was the only player on the team who was elected to six consecutive Pro Bowls.
Wilson had experienced some health problems in recent years. He underwent two major surgeries in 2004 after being diagnosed with colon cancer.

Bill Walsh was right, Bill Wilson deserves to be in the HOF. Let's hope the veterans committee corrects a wrong, so his kids and grand-kids can be there to honor him. PS Same goes for John Brodie!
Billy Wilson was one of the all time great 49ers-I was lucky enough to see him play as little boy along with the above mentioned (McElhenny was my hero-but I loved Joe "The Jet";Y.A,:R.C.etc) and it was so exciting!God bless you Billy rest in peace!
I loved Billy Wilson as a kid in the '50's. I met him a couple of years ago after a round of golf on his home course -- where he was Club Champion. Nice guy who had the physical attribute that I suspect all great receivers have, absolutely huge hands. However, Matt, I thought he said he worked for the Niners for 40 years.
Comment: I thought he (Billy Wilson) said he worked for the Niners for 40 years.
My response: Yes, that should've read that he worked for the 49ers for 30 years after his playing days. You're right, it's 40 years. --Matt M.
Hi Matt,
Fist of all, I want to say Rest In Peace to an all time great 49er Billy Wilson. In the history the 49ers alwasy had great WRs from Billy Wilson, to R.C. Owens, to Gene Washington, to Jerry Rice. Hopefully Jason Hill, and Josh Morgan can live up to these standards. Also, Matt any news on Hue Jackson and how the 2nd interview went? Are Jackson, and Mike Johnson still in the Bay Area, and working on a contract for both? Furhtermore, do u think after the Linehan debacle that they will not annouce anything until they know for sure Jackson has agreed to be the OC?
My Dad and I used to listen to 49er games in Sacramento, on KFBK. Billy was one of the top receivers in the league in the 50's. He was always reliable...others may've had more flash, but Billy Wilson was one of Y.A. Tittle's favorite receivers. After six Pro Bowls, you'd think he'd be a shoe-in for the HOF. Ok, veteran's committee, now's the time to enshrine him. It's the right thing to do.
Sad day with Billy 'The Goose' Wilson's passing. Papa George Halas gave him that nickname....The Goose. Saw him play many a game at Kezar. Plus like The Goose I am a San Jose State alumi. Back in the day SJS could play with the best of them. Farewll Goose.....great memories of number 84.
RIP Billy. I'm going to the Kezar pub on Sunday for the Superbowl, right across the street from the old stadium. I'll tip a pint to your memory.
Hey dcsham-I grew up about 5 blocks from Kezar. Is the old Kezar Club still there? Have a great time and yes...tip one for Billy as well as Matt Hazletine and John Ayers. We use to sneak into the old Kezar Club after some games and guys like YA Title, Bob St. Clair, Joe Perry, Hugh Mc would stop in now and then. Have a great time on Sunday.
