Young, one of the most respected players in 49ers history, is reportedly in line to become the Fighting Irish's defensive graduate assistant coach under coach Charlie Weis.
Young was a regular visitor at 49ers training camp last summer. He sat in on coaches meetings as he tried to determine whether he wanted to pursue a career in coaching. Young retired after the 2007 season, concluding a brilliant 14-year career.
Young was the 49ers' first-round pick (No. 7 overall) in the 1994 draft after a stellar Notre Dame career.

Niners coach Mike Singletary and general manager Scot McCloughan have resumed their search for an offensive coordinator at the Senior Bowl in
There is no news on that front, yet. We'll keep you posted.
Linehan is a candidate for jobs with the Buccaneers and Jets. Rob Chudzinski is also reportedly a candidate for the job with the Bucs. Word is that Chudzinski, the former offensive coordinator of the Browns, remains a candidate for the 49ers job. It is unclear whether Colts receivers coach Clyde Christensen is still in the picture.
So where do the 49ers go from here? You can assume Singletary and McCloughan will speak to more candidates this week. Of the team's that lost yesterday, Eagles QBs coach Pat Shurmur and Ravens QBs coach Hue Jackson appear to be the best candidates for offensive-coordinator jobs. They are reportedly top candidates for other jobs. Shurmur has been linked to the Rams, while Jackson is reportedly a candidates for jobs with the Jets and Bengals. Last week, former

If he wanted to pursue coaching why go to Notre Dame? Why not start with the 49ers in some capacity? Maybe as an assistant defensive line coach or something.
BY will be able to coach boys into great men as well as some
great defensive lineman for the Niners to draft from the greatest college football school on the planet Notre Dame.
Matt,
Would it be worth taking a chance on Peppers knowing that we need some D-line help?
Uhhh.... You DO know that Young played his college ball at Notre Dame, right?
I do understand that. I also understand that he played here for 14 years, so why go to the college ranks to start coaching? Our d-linemen could learn a thing or two from BY.
I always got the idea that BY was a quiet-reserved lead by example kind of guy. It appears that he would need better communication skills to coach...
maybe he decided to go to Nd because he just recently retired from the niners and played with many of the players still on the squad. it may be hard for the staff and the players to make that transition between BY being a leader as a coach vs BY being a leader as a player. It's the same with coach singletary, why didn't he start off coaching in chicago, instead of trying to get a coaching position at his alma mater Baylor.
Why go to the college ranks to start coaching?
I can think of several reasons, starting with the idea that some people find college football to be more appealing than pro football, and moving on to the idea that some people are more devoted to their alma mater than to their professional job. Believe it or not, Young may consider himself a Golden Domer first, and a 49er second. Of course, we have to also consider the possibility that Notre Dame wants to include him in their program and the 49ers don't have a current opening.
Matt, maybe we're looking in all the wrong places for Singletary's choice for Offensive Coordinator. Maybe an ex-NFL player who is laboring at a small college, sort of in the mold of Turner Gill. I have no names to suggest, I'm just guessing, trying to think unconventionally.
Shurmur is a guy im high on but you got to think he will likely go to the Rams because he already has a relationship with Spags.
Chudzinski would be an okay choice but I think Jagodinski could be a terrific guy and if he would committ to being here for at least two years, he is the guy I would take.

I am really suprised Singeltary hasn't at least talked to Bill Musgrave and I thought Craig Johnson and/or Ken Zampese would have gotten a look.
Looks like it is no sure thing that Brian Schotenheimer is staying with the Jets, now that is a guy that would be great here as offensive coordinator.
You can add the names Paul Kruger DE/OLB Utah and Autin Collie WR Utah. Both announced that they were coming out but they don't appear on the list since the NFL does not consider thm "Underclassmen" because they graduated HS prior to 2005. Both have done Mormon missions. Kruger's agent has confirmed this and while there is no confirmation from Collie, he does fall in the same category as Kruger. Kruger is an interestig R2 option as a pass rushing OLB for the 49ers
I think you hit it, Zed. No openings on the 49ers. After he was offered the ND job, he might have put in a call to the '9ers to see if they had anything. When they said no thanks, he was back in class at ND. ND started talking to him when he went back there in the fall and was honored at half time.
New OC tom Cable?
Good luck B.Y...you are a real class act. Also, good luck to the Cardinals. They ended this season by doing all the things the Niners wished they could do. Hopefully coach Singletary can pull some magic out of his hat. I am begining to think this OC search has become a joke. Why did he fire Martz if he had no real idea of who he was going to sign??
i would have created a position for BY and hired him. He is exactly the kind of personality we want our guys to be taught by.
"I am begining to think this OC search has become a joke. Why did he fire Martz if he had no real idea of who he was going to sign??"
I've been thinking about this a bit lately... Supposedly Sing couldn't get a HC job in previous years because he didn't have a 'list'. I was under the impression that he finally gathered that 'list' last offseason, so who was on his list for OC? I'm a bit confused about the whole thing, really.
Best of luck to BY...I think coaching at ND is cool. He can help mold young men into better players and people.
As for the OC situation, Coach and Mac are in the best possible place...the Senior bowl, to interview more candidates. They'll get someone good...have a little faith, Niner faithful.
I really like Collie...he's an excellent receiver and also returns kicks. Mature guy, too, which definitely helps the transition from college to the pros.
Martz was the anti-Singletary.
When we got into the AZ and Cowboy situations, needing to pound the front for a couple of yards to score we couldn't do it.
Martz is pass happy, no secrets, no surprises.
Sing wants a balanced attack and I cannot argue with that.
Any team in the post season needs to run and have it respected before you can go up top with any success.
Draft the Big Nasties, both lines.
Protect the QB.
Sack the QB.
I know hindsight is 20/20 and all that but letting Martz go without a solid replacement is reminiscent of the Mariucci firing. I'm starting to get very nervous about the offense next season. Another year of a Hostler type offense could drive fans away at incredible levels which could cause the 9ers to turn to the dark side, LA. Sing's tenure might be incredibly short if he doesn't get this hire right.
Please take Everette Brown in the first round. Monster pass rusher who can be converted to OLB in the 3-4.
One word: WOW
Mike Lombardi of the NFP says that Linehan’s 49ers rejection was a QB issue – Linehan just didn’t want to stake his career on what the 49ers might or might not do at that spot.
"What happen to Scott Linehan in San Francisco was that he became worried about the quarterback situation and who could handle the job. Coaches have careers just as players do, and no coach wants to walk into an impossible situation. Linehan has to make his next job the right job. He must rebuild his career and make sure he places himself in the right situation. This is why Jim Fassel, the former Giants coach, failed. When he went to the Ravens and could not make the offense excel, he hurt his career. Many of the things that happened to Fassel were not his fault, but he paid the price by going into that situation. Linehan wants to avoid those pitfalls, and he looked at the 49ers and thought, “Who’s going to be my QB and how can I make that work?” He decided he couldn’t."
If that is the reason that he didn't take the job I hope he has fun in Tampa Bay if he takes the job. I doubt Garcia is coming back, the Bucs are going to have to shell out some money to keep Bryant at receiver, and the other two options at qb aren't the answer.
Interesting take. I can understand why that would be a concern. If I were Linehan, I might insist that I have some QB personnel control. That might have been a major sticking point. Your hands would be tied as an OC, having the QB's the 9ers have. Your looking at a guy who is a gamer, but hasn't established himself as a mid-level QB in the team's mind (Hill) as the only QB on the roster. You also have no guarentee that they draft a QB high or bring in a qualified vet. I can see why it would be tough to take the job.
That just means that he does not have confidence in his ability to make things happen. He wants to be in a situation where the work has been done for him.
So it WASN'T for personal reasons. I didn't think so. I understand not wanting to work with the niners QB's, but I don't understand why he couldn't just come out and say it. Coach's can be funny. This is one reason I'm happy to have Singletary. You either get the truth, or nothing at all.
Comment: What happen to Scott Linehan in San Francisco was that he became worried about the quarterback situation and who could handle the job.
My response: I really don't think that's the reason. After all, Linehan made it work with the Dolphins with Gus Frerotte as his QB. Also, if Linehan passed on the 49ers because of their QB situation, what will he see when he looks at the situations with the Bucs and Jets? --Matt M.
Do the 9ers even want to interview Jags? I mean the guy showed poor decision making with the Jets thing. Maybe he's Boras-ing up the competition. The guy needs a job now
If he took the Jets job, that too is considerably closer to St. Louis in air miles, correct?
Matt,
For some reason, I have it in mind that posting another writers words on this blog is bad form. Having said that, one of your peers surmised Linehan turned the 9ers down due to the organizations poor reputation in the NFL. I can't say that I disagree with his assessment. If Linehan accepts another offer this year, it will look as though he flat out lied to you. It's not the end of the world but it definitely says someething about the man's character. Also, it says the 9ers are not viewed as an employer of choice. Jed needs to change that perception and fast.
Thanks for the reply MM. I put very little faith in Lombardi's reports and that seemed like a stretch to me. Profootballtalk.com has an entire page dedicated to Lombardi’s reports that have all turned out to be false and/or flat out lies. Including the one we all know to well regarding one ex-BC head coach and his interview with our 49ers.
"Do the 9ers even want to interview Jags? I mean the guy showed poor decision making with the Jets thing."
BC made the poor decision, not Jags.
I say we should resign Julian Peppers, at least he's a pro bowler. We gave all that money to Nate Clements and he's done nothing so far, Pat Willis is on his way to his second pro bowl already. (yes I'm talking about you nate)
