Former Browns offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski today became the third candidate to interview at the team's offices in Santa Clara for the 49ers' offensive coordinator position. He met with coach Mike Singletary and general manager Scot McCloughan.

Colts receivers coach Clyde Christensen and former Rams coach Scott Linehan kicked off the formal interview process on Friday.

Chudzinski, 40, turned down an opportunity last year to interview for the Ravens head-coaching position when the Browns awarded him a lucrative contract extension. But new Browns coach Eric Mangini did not retain Chudzinski on his staff. Mangini replaces fired Romeo Crennel.

Chudzinski could bring the tight end back into the passing game for the 49ers. Vernon Davis was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2006 draft. Davis caught 52 passes for 509 yards and four touchdowns in '07, and appeared to be emerging as a pass-catching target. However, Davis managed just 31 receptions for 358 yards and two touchdowns in Mike Martz's offense, as he became used more frequently as a blocker.

Chudzinski's background is as a tight ends coach. He worked under coordinator Cam Cameron with the Chargers in 2005 and '06. Tight end Antonio Gates was named to the Pro Bowl each of those seasons.

He also worked with Kellen Winslow at the University of Miami, as well as during his two stints with the Browns. Chudzinski was elevated from tight ends coach to offensive coordinator for the final five games of 2004 after Terry Robiskie took over as head coach following the resignation of head coach Butch Davis.

Prior to his arrival in the NFL with the Browns, Chudzinski spent a total of 10 seasons at Miami as an assistant. During three seasons as offensive coordinator, the Hurricanes played in three BCS games, including twice for the BCS championship. Frank Gore, Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, Andre Johnson, Bryant McKinnie and Ken Dorsey played for Chudzinski.

Obviously, the interview yesterday with Christensen came out of nowhere. The big connection appears to be 49ers offensive line coach Chris Foerster. Christensen and Foerster overlapped eight seasons on Tony Dungy's staffs with the Buccaneers and Colts. Foerster was added to the 49ers' staff last offseason. He took over sole duties at line coach when George Warhop was fired along with coach Mike Nolan in October.

are there any informations how the three interviews went ?
Any news if there are more or if we are close to a decision ?

Chud.....Da Dud, 23 straight quarters without a TD. He stuck by Derek Anderson while Brady Quinn sat. Folks here in Cleveland will pay for his bs ticket out of town. A one year wonder. I mean 23 quarterds without a TD???? That says it all. And please no excuses about injuries. Thed Browns offense was soooo predictable.

I'm no Anderson fan but he did win ten games, why throw a rookie in the fire when you've got a guy out there winning games. Look what happened to Alex Smith in that situation. And his experience with Winslow and Gates means he may teach Vernon Davis how to catch. What he did with the Browns is like winning three consecutive Super Bowls with a real team.

That said, I'm still in Linehan's camp, but all three of these guys would be great coordinators. They meet all my qualification. Unless all three turn him down he can't really go wrong.

A bit off the subject here (well, not really, as you'll see). Watching the Ravens-Titans game. Second quarter. A word about Joe Flacco - WOW. Coordinators are important, as all the coaches are. But to quote the great Mike Ditka on Singletary's ultimate success - "you gotta have the hotses." You can see in just a couple of throws that Flacco is heads and shoulders above Alex Smith in talent/poise. And what an arm! Gotta, gotta, gotta have the players. I know I harp on this all the time. We need more great players and that will be the challenge for McSing.

Matt,
Are there any other interviews set up for today or are the 49ers not releasing that inf0

Yea that game was pretty exciting, but I'm not THAT big on flacco. yes he was dropping bombs down the field, but alot of times on the short er routes, he was underthrowing guys or throwing it out of bounds. in addition to that, most of the time he was chucking it downfield, the titans had 8 in the box and the receiver was double covered. but I do think he did a phenomenal job not getting picked, which is something that can't be said about smith.

I believe it was our good friend Darren who said several times toward the end of the season that Arizona was the worst playoff team of all time. You nailed that one! One game from the Super Bowl makes me think of how tough the Niners played them twice this season, and makes me pretty rxcited for the future.

correction... makes me excited for the future.

Exactly!!! I am glad to see the niners taking their time in trying to find the OC. As long as they have someone in place by the superbowl then I am happy. That will give the new coaching staff enough time to start targeting F.A. and the draft.

We shouldn't worry about whether our OC will become a head-coaching candidate elsewhere; we should just hire the best OC we can find.

I think those of you who are worried about hiring someone like Chudzinski should be focusing on how Cleveland's offense performed this year, not on whether he would flee to become a head coach. The OCs we lost to head coaching were both under extraordinary circumstances; no one thought either McCarthy or Turner would leave. Hostler and Martz were both fired.

Let's look at this realistically and not be paranoid. In 2010, who's even going to be hiring head coaches? Bad teams generally lose their coaches and have to hire from outside, but look at the teams who are bad this year - they're all hiring coaches already! What HC jobs are going to be open? Almost no NFL team fires a coach after one season, and after looking at the five worst teams this year, only Kansas City is bringing its coach back; what other "bad teams" are going to be firing coaches? Who do you see losing their job? I could see jobs opening up in Minnesota, Philadelphia, and Dallas - but I can also see Shanahan, Cowher, and Holmgren tossing their hats back into the ring next year if those marquee jobs become available.

If Linehan's the best guy, hire him - his resume is impressive. If Chudzinski is the best guy, hire him and make sure his QB coach - or Rathman - can take over if the OC is successful enough to merit a promotion elsewhere.

If we go about this hire the right way, we'll be set for the future; let's not shoot ourselves in the foot over paranoia.

I thought they Singletary wanted a power run offensive coordinator, which was why he fired martz. But it seems to me that Christensen and Chudzinski worked with more pass oriented teams. Whats going on?

I can't stand Linehan personally as a coach – looked he was always hight on ten cups of Starbucks with the Rams. But based on track records and Sing's long-term needs for OC stability, Linehan would be the better choice.

Yes, everyone can ooh and aah at Flacco's arm strength, but right now, he's a one trick pony and playing for a GREAT defense. The turnovers won that game for the Titans.

This is what I love about the NFL, anything can happen once you make it to the playoffs. Nobody gave the Giants a chance last year heading into the playoffs. Nobody gave the Cards a chance heading into the playoffs this year. What this tells me is that football is equal parts mental as well as physical. You have to have believe that you can win in order to be successful. Coach Sing has our guys believing they can win and I whole heartedly believe that if we were representing the NFC West this year we would be doing some damage. Momentum is an underrated attribute!!

regarding the fan who/s excited about our future becauseof of how we played arizona, this is indeed sad.they are a much better team than the niners.i believe coach sing can take us to the next level ,and i have total faith that he will find the best oc for his vision.just having someone who can envision a system to which we acquire and cut iplayers according to compatability is refrebhingly new insofar as having a conceptual thinker in the organization.however,as noted above, you must have the horses, and we certainly do not.when i hear of ownership say it has no interest in free agency, with out egregious need for impact players,i question not only the commitment to winning but also the long-term commitment to coach sing.the fan pack is all positive now.no critiicism welcomed,so is telling a loved one their tumof is an attractive beauty mark being positive?no explosive player, like percy harvin, because of more pressing needs?please.these voices will be the first to snivel when they realize a run game needs a multi-purpose decongestant, who cannot be defensed without opening up our entire offense.

I like Linehan's pedigree...many fans look at his HC record w/Rams, but who in recents years has any success with that team. More important is his success and experience as an OC, and with that, he's the guy in my eyes. His experience as a HC is also an advantage...even though he didn't fare well, it's still experience, and that would be helpful to Singletary.

They say they won't spend money in free agency, but I don't believe much of anything the orginization says.(except Singletary) It wouldn't surprise me if they spent a ton of money in free agency. I believe every team has the "Horses". Teams win in the NFL because of a positive mental attitude and excellent coaching. Every once in a while a team gets a superstar QB, but other than that, it's all about coaching and attitude. So, if the Niners don't end up with a superstar QB, I'm going to be excited about the teams attitude and what appears to be good coaching so far under Singletary. Forgive me if I think the tumor is an attractive beauty mark.

By the way, how did you feel about the Dolphins "horses" at the beginning of the season? Everyone thought they would win maybe 4 or 5 games at the most. They were a left tackle, a decent not great QB, and a good coach from turning it around. I know they have Parcells, but Sporano deserves some serious credit. I think there is hope.

truthpeddler...huh???

in my opinion the belief that every team has the horses is not even rational.the dolphins were of little concern to me early on,but they certanly exceeded my unexamined expectations.i certainly did not say good coaching ,and a great system visionary ,were less than essential.in fact,i said the opposite.are you attemting to say the dolphins did not have horses?they clearly did.that rickey and ronny would be such a great tandem ,or if rickey would be impactful, was unknown at the start .many wrote porter off.clearly he remains a horse.moreover,i think a positive mental attitude is crucial.however, your contention that coaching and attitude obviate the need for horses is airy-fairy jibberish.

truthpeddler, your posts are a cross between George Bush, Johnnie Cochran, and Mohamar Khaddafi. Well done! I have no idea what your trying to convey but anyone who can put those phrases together deserves an award.

However, in so much as, therefore, in terms of, and to wrap up - airy fairy. And the truth set me free.

Let's see if I have parsed the peddler's poorly posted and punctuated pontifications properly:

1. Two Niners-suck posts this week, both based on an off-hand remark from Jed York on a radio show regarding the upcoming FA period.

2. Didn't have a clue Miami would be good, but is sure the Niners won't.

3. Despite the clear evidence of two close games and otherwise identical records, judges the Cardinals to be vastly superior to the Niners.

4. Characterizes his criticism as kindly tumor diagnostics.

5. Presents no data of any kind to support anything he says, but concludes he's correct and optimism is all wrong.

Gee, peddler man, I'm no genius, but I can spot a pile of negative blarney when I see it. Go Niners!

I'd rather have Frank Gore then Ronnie or Ricky or both. I'd rather have Willis, then Porter. I'd rather have Justin Smith then Kendall Langford. I'd rather have Nate Clements then Will Allen. We have the horses my friend. We were close to winning the phins game. Gore didn't play that game. The Niners are closer to putting it together then you realize. We wouldn't even be talking about this if they had Singletary and Shaun Hill running things from thee start of the season. So we'll just have to wait and see what happens. I believe the NFC west is right there in front of them. They must be salavating watching these Cards games, knowing that they can compete with them.

I believe that Coach Singletary has left himself plenty of wiggle room in his comments. While talking about the need for a power running game, he mentioned it in the context of running effectively when the other team knows you're going to run. He also mentioned the need to run within the context of a balanced attack, and invoked Bill Walsh's name in that balanced attack approach. And, if you'll recall, Coach Walsh did pass much morein the 1st half to get a lead, and then run more in the 4th qtr to maintain the lead. I don't believe that Coach Singletary's comments necessarily foreshadows a power-running straightjacket that he seeks to impose on the offense.

1 agree with youp preferences of niner horses over those of the dolphins.my contention was that the dolphins had horses, not just good coaching and the attititude that comes with good coaching.the amazing aspect was how fast parcells and company turned it around.i believe the cardinals and others looked passed us because they had no respect for nolan/s niners and were not ready for our amazing turnarond.they will be next year.the logic that says we are as good as arizona would also say we are inferior to seattle.as every year,i want the niners to win so badly, and i honestly believe we are only a few horses from the playoffs.that is why i lobby in such aprovocative manner.it certainly isn/t to incur the wrath of punctuation pansies, losers whocompare me with terrorists, and similar football know-nothins.
