There are a lot of questions every day from readers of this blog who wonder why the 49ers have not considered Mike Shanahan or Jon Gruden or Dennis Green or Ken Zampese or Al Saunders or Ken Anderson and so on.
My answer is: I'm sure they all have been considered. There have been a lot of names kicked around by coach Mike Singletary and GM Scot McCloughan. You can rest assured that many phone calls have taken place in the past 28 days to investigate potential candidates for the job.
Perhaps the real question is: Why haven't those individuals been brought in for formal interviews? Thus far, there have been seven candidates who have sat down for interviews, including Dan Reeves and Hue Jackson, who were in
If a person isn't interviewed it is because either the 49ers did not wish to pursue that person or there is no interest on the other end. In the case of former successful head coaches, it's easy to understand that few would want to take a step back and assume the grunt-work responsibilities of becoming a coordinator.
The 49ers find themselves in the same position as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs have a head coach, but they do not have an offensive coordinator. The Patriots don't have a coordinator, per se, but coach Bill Belichick will reportedly handle those duties.
The Chiefs and Raiders do not have head coaches - and, therefore, they don't have coordinators, either.
Are the 49ers in competition for offensive coordinators? Probably not. It seems Singletary has a unique vision of what he wants from that position. Perhaps his deliberate nature prevented Scott Linehan from accepting the job. But at least nobody can complain Singletary is rushing into a hasty decision.

I can't complain about them being too hasty, but I can complain that FA is closer than we think and the talent pool can only get smaller with every passing day.
I really hope a decision is announced within the next 72 hours.

Exactly, haste makes waste.
isnt this just bad public relation work the 49ers are doing ?
not answering answers from the journalists, not commenting on linehan or the search for the oc, just not giving any info when or what will happen.
this makes everyone feel they simply have no clue or plan what to do.
well, if thats their plan to make the fans believe that they haave no clue - congrats, you do a pretty darn good job
so you call 5 weeks haste ???
I thought HE had a list when HE interviewed with jed for the HC job.
So what takes so long ?
What do you expect Singletary to say? "We are working on it!" "The search goes on!" "Everything that can be done is being done!" That is about all he can say until he has a signing to announce. Why waste his breath?
if you inform people it brings you into an offense position insted of looking all defense.
you can comment on linehan, you can comment that you do your search on a very detailed level,...
otherwise, NOW, people only knoe that singletary wants his OC "yesterday" and that linehan turned doen their offer.
the picture of singletary and scott is one of two men beeing clueless and turned down by their only possible option and now desperately searching for a b plan they dont have.
just some information, a press conference, could have drawn a completely diffent picture.
i tell you as i am in the media business, so believe me, acting like the 49erss are is not a very good option in meanings of PR
it's not like singletary can just have whoever he wants because he said so. and conversely, he may not want whoever wants the job. i'm ok with them taking this long. he's making sure he can find the right guy. now if it goes too much longer, then there might be a problem, but as it stands, i'm ok with it.
What exactly is he going to say that is going to paint a different picture? Jed York has already said the right things to the media about "making sure we find the right person" etc. etc. over the past few days. Shouldn't Singletary just be concentrating on his job?
I guess this has to all play out somehow-- just because sit has to. But wow, it sure looks like a boondoggle-in-the-making.
I would really like to know whether, if he could push a button and go back 5 weeks, Sing would do things differently. And WHAT he would do differently. He had to be embarrassed by the Linehan development. And like a lot of people have said, worse things could happen than if Martz had stayed on, awkward and uncertain-of-future as that may have been. It is so simple to announce "I have a philosophy. . ." It is often not so easy to execute that philosophy within the limitations of the real world.
Q: Is there NOBODY on the Cards/ Steelers staffs that might be an appropriate target?
yes he should.
its more than 30 days now.
you have the feeling they work 24 hours to get an oc as soon as possible so they can evaluate team, free agents and draftees to be prepared for the fa starting in 30 days ?
Every day counts to get prepared...
so what are they waiting for ?
if there is anyone out there they want to interview - why didnt they already ?
there are only two teams left with possible candidates, thsi would be the only explaination, but i cant believe it.
Chan Gailey may or may not be let go in Kansas City depending on that head coaching search. He would be a very good OC candidate. There is just too much we don't know to jump to conclusions.
Mayhaps Singletary has already entered a gentlemen's agreement with one of the coaches currently coaching for one the Superbowl teams and is simply awaiting the end of the post-season to interview and hire them.
we could wait until july.
maybe norv will be fired too.
and if not, we could make a hostler.
Wasn't everyone all up in arms recently when it was leaked that Linehan was offered the job before he accepted it? Didn't we hear a lot of folks saying it should have been "kept in house" until it was a done deal? And now some of you are wanting to hammer the team for not giving a press conference to say what, "we're still looking"? I know news has been slow as of late, but let's keep things in perspective. Singletary has shown the ability and willingness to take drastic and swift measures when he deems necessary (e.g. Davis, QB swap, dumping Martz, etc), and they have all worked thus far. He has a plan and he knows what he wants. Just because it's not being done on a time line that fans might like doesn't mean it isn't being done right. Give him a break and have a little faith ... he will get his man, and the team will be better for it.
yeah, faith, i forgot.
i bet sing waits for god to send him the next oc
I wonder if perhaps we're waiting for Russ Grimm. He seems to fit Singletary's vision and toughness.
Is Grimm a real possibility? Offense-minded? I know some thought he would be a hc in Pittsburgh before they hired Tomlin.
I, for one, do not see anything wrong with keeping the O.C. search info to a minimum. Whenever a team floats names -- or even allows names to be floated - and when the candidates named don't accept the offer, or denies ever wanting to be considered, that, I believe, causes more damage to the image of a team.
Remember back to some of the head coaching searches where such things happened. The 49ers organization looked foolish; it gave the impression that no one of any caliber wanted the H.C. position.
As of now, only Scott Linehan has been offered offered the job, and he turned down. The reasons he gave made sense; especially when he came clean and said it was because he did not feel comfortable working with Mike Singletary.
I would just as soon hear about the search when it comes to successful end. Speculation only adds to the anxiety we all feel.
Like most -- Sing included -- I wish that they could have had a new O.C. yesterday. But the 49ers have a reputation of rushing into decisions that have blown up in their faces. Of course, the reverse has also been true: they have taken an incredible amount of time, and still made bad decisions.
As for me, I say err on the side of caution and take your time. Let's get this right!
Matt--Following up on above, How would you assess Russ Grimm as a possibility? And for QB coach?
Dennis Green is the reason for 96%of the talent on the Arz. Cards roster. He drafted WR.Fitzgerald,Boldin,Bryant, RB JJ Arrington he aquired RB Emmit Smith, Edge James QB's Lienart and Warner are his brainchilds as well as many other Free agents. He lead the Vikes To a 15-1 Rec in the late 97 or 98 the reason they lost was an unproven QB. I KNOW Denny Green Would be perfect for us as OC and he would also bring longevity since he has had HC chances and was not succesful not all his fault. he would be a niner an long as Coach Sing has a job. We NEED Dennis Green
What makes you so sure the 49ers care about what we think of how this process is going? They're trying to please the fans by putting together a winning team, by any means necessary. When they start winning games, I guarantee you won't hear a single complaint about how "long" the OC hiring process took.
And how is the team impacted (negatively or positively) any greater now rather than if they hire someone a month from now? Did I miss something? B/c your comments make it seem like they're ready to hit the practice fieled, but they're just waitin' on the OC to be hired.
Should've kept Mike Martz. He was doing a fine job. He was also willing to adapt to Singletary's philosophy.
49er fans have to wake-up. Look at the last nine years under the stewardship of the Yorks. Does anyone think that the last nine years represent a competent organization? What gives any 49er fan comfort in the current organizational structure going forward? Jed the boy-king, Scot the spineless GM with the very questionable draft results, or a head coach who has never been a coordinator, and who thinks that Mike Nolan laid the foundation for something special. Now they are going to bring in Reeves, Nolan's mentor, who has always had trouble relating to the modern player and has been out of football for years. Root for the team, hope they do well, but please wake up!!!
Let's face facts here. How many significant hires have coach Singletary & President York made? Very few, right? These guys are learning how to do this. Also, the 49ers are not likely a highly desirable team to work for right? How could they be with their poor record of late, relatively weak/in-experienced roster and less than distinguished front office? Things will probably work out but don’t be surprised if the team has to settle for far less than their first choice for OC, even if they can make up their collective minds on who that might be. OJT is sometimes difficult to watch especially when there is no apparent mentor to guide the rookies.
I think many of you have conveniently forgotten that we sent an offer to our #1 OC candidate 12 days ago... he declined that offer 8 days ago. For all intents and purposes we are now on day 8 of our NEW OC search.
let's face it. If the Yorks hadn't hired Sing, we would have our choice of Shanahan, Gruden, Herm, etc... All top notch coaches who 90% of the fan base would have cheered as though we won the lottery. Now that our first choice for OC has declined, we still don't know what type of offence we're going to be running. will it be digital based? West Coast? What? No clue. I like Sing too but he's just not ready.
What possible good could come from waking up, MtoC? So we could be like you? Bitter, disenfranchised, disillusioned, without hope, mean-spirited towards people doing their best to produce a winning football team, forever prone to wild accusations and finger-pointing, finding fault with every day in every way, constantly calling out for reinforcements for your negative bandwagon, same speech every post, nothing new ever, ever, ever? No thanks. I'm a Niner fan. You're just a common ordinary insignificant little troll. Get some sleep. You sound tired.
Wow Vienna, what an impressive display of intelligence and open mindedness ... "faith" is not uniquely assigned to any deity or religion. Faith simply implies a belief in someone, some thing, some process, some idea, or whatever. And yes, I, as someone who is not of any single religion, have tremendous FAITH in Singletary as the leader of this team. It has nothing to do with what he may wear around his neck or what he does as a pre-game ritual, it has to do with him being a great motivator, a smart man, a great student of the game, and and one of the greatest players of all time.
Funny how some of you folks were so "embarrassed" by the job offered to Linehan, only for him to turn it down... Do you really think Singletary and McCloughan are just sitting on their thumbs right now? Silence isn't always a bad thing.
Whatever is going on behind closed doors is fine with me as long as when it's all said and done, we come out of this with a OC that gets it done. And we won't know that until after a few regular season games.
Yeah, let's hire a retread. No thanks.
I was going to respond to him, but you killed it. Good job, Skeebers =)
As Matt already mentioned there are still teams out there that don't have a HC let alone a coordinator so it's not like we need to be in a full scale panic mode just because we haven't found someone.
When it comes to interviewing someone for a job you'll always have minimal information from a team until the process is complete. For one you don't want to tip your hands to the 31 other teams out there about your intentions and secondly these meetings and interviews are private discussions and it lacks professionalism for their to be comments or leaks about them.
So as odd as it may sound the details of the process are really none of our business :)
What happend to the 49er Faithful? A lot of you sound like the 49er fickle. Excuse me while I go back to sleep...
Thank you.
Can anyone seriously blame Singletary for being a little tight lipped about this whole affair right now? he's been very upfront with the media in post game interviews, sometimes saying things he didn't mean. and how has the media treated him? publishing stories about his motivational techniques from inside HIS locker room.
And even if he were to address the fans about the whole linehan misread, what can he possibly say that wouldn't put him in a defensive position and look weak? He's a head coach he's not here to hold us fans by the hand everytime we second guess his and mccloughan's decisions.
Skeebers? Montana to Clark makes a lot of sense! And he has history to back him up! But what makes me laugh about your reply to him is you take offense at having him comment to us to wake up! And you take it to another level by making PERSONAL ATTACKS against M&C. I guess you think your position of being a York kiss butt is the ONLY one allowed on Matt's site! Strange that you accuse M&C of writing the same theme over and over again! Funny thing!? You of anyone here are the one who makes the SAME COMMENTS over and over again..."The Yorks are right!....The Yorks are right!...The Yorks are right!!" "Sing is right!...Sing is right!...Sing is right...etc, etc!"
People like you are the one's who fail to see the history of this York Family Fun House!
It's OK to be a die hard 49er fan and I believe you are.! Nothing wrong with that! But maybe EVERYBODY taking the time to comment here are die hard 49er fans whether your great perception tells you that or not! But being a die hard 49er fan doesn't mean you goose step to every move the Yorks, the coaches and the franchise make! Especially with the track record they've had under the Yorks!
So now my comments are personal toward you! And I say along with M&C...WAKE UP!!!
Blah, blah, blah.
C'mon everybody. Let's all WAKE UP. So we can turn out to be like Terry and MtoC. Yessiree. Tis a consumation devoutly to be wished. We can all have that EYEBALLS WIDE OPEN ALL THE TIME look you see on street corners and the hallways of cuckoo's nests. Go Terry! And close your tattered robe, your knees are showing.
Wild Conjecture #483:
There IS someone on the Cards/Steelers staffs that he wants to talk to (Russ Grimm, or. . .), AND, despite being a man of faith in the process ("deliberate, " as Matt M likes to say), he also has a back-up plan which is reasonably secure. For example, Rathman plus a consultant--in case Mr. Experienced and Philosophically Right does not soon appear.
Bumper-sticker idea for Terry and M-to-C:
"My entertainment makes me miserable!"
LMAO! As much as I tend to disagree w/ what you post, I must admit you do add a certain entertainment value to the blog. Straight comedy.
MarkW I was thinking the samething. To take it a step further, maybe Linehan was the first "available" option, and the Niners wanted to pull the trigger and not wait for the post season to end so they could interview others. Now that they fired a blank w/ Linehan, their focus is back on a candidate they originally had interest in, who could very well be on one of the SB teams.
Terry, Skeebers never said anything about the Yorks. He just mentioned that seeing doom and gloom in every move is not the best way to ENJOY watching football. Flip3 has a great point. This sport is entertainment. If you can't stand it, get out. Pick a new team, pick a new sport, find a hobby. Don't go away mad, just go away. I don't know why you hate the Yorks. Sure, Dr. York is an odd dude who has made some terrible decisions. No one here is saying that the Yorks never made a mistake, but you are acting like they tried to acquire the 49ers, or that they stole them from Eddie D. The fact is, they took over the team to keep it in the family after Eddie screwed up. I love Eddie as much as any other fan, but that is the truth. He could not keep the team, and the Yorks did the best they knew how. Now, there best was pretty pathetic at first, but Dr. York has at least learned enough to take a step back. They fired Nolan, even though he made it much easier for Dr. York to hide from the media. They gave Coach Sing the interim job, when you KNOW Martz was in their ear, trying to move up into the big office. Those recent decisions were the right move. Was coach Sing the right call for 2008? Obviously. Will coach Sing be the right call going forward? I think so, but we will see.
I wish that my parents owned a football team. I wish I was rich before I could talk. That would be awesome, but that's not the case. I am not angry at Jed York for being in that position, just like I wasn't mad at Eddie D. for being in that postion. We all love Eddie, but you hate Jed so much. Take a closer look at you history before you make yourself look stupid... or stupider.
Newsworthy: Nolan just agreed to a 2 year deal as DC in Denver.
What started out looking like a prudent search for an OC has now taken on the appearance of "paralasis by analyasis."
Somethings you need to just pull the trigger on like pulling JTO out. but hiring an OC isn't one. Especially with Coach singletary's inexperience on the offensive side of the ball, this is one hire he isn't going to rush.
Well, what you wrote proves my whole point! Remember what your mom told you after you wrote something? She stared at you and said, "Stupid is as stupid does!"
