So much for the item about Jeff Jagodzinski interviewing for the 49ers' offensive coordinator position. Word is that Jagodzinski is not a candidate for the job, after all.

Jagodzinski, who was fired as Boston College head coach last week, was reported as a candidate for the position, according to Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post. The report stated with a great deal of certainty that Jagodzinski would be among the candidates to receive a formal interview with the 49ers.

My apologies for hastily posting something that was reported elsewhere before getting confirmation on the story.

At least you correct yourself. That's why we trust you.

My response: I should have made it clear that I had not confirmed the information. But it's a good lesson about the dangers of running too quickly with a story before checking out all the facts. --Matt M.

Matt

Thanks for not having an offseason;-) and giving us die hard fans our daily fix of 49er news. I have a favor to ask of you. Is there a way you can link all of your KNBR appearances / podcasts on this page so this web site can be a one stop shop for us to access?

Also, you had reported that Ted Thompson was not a Mike Nolan fan and subsequently had reported that Mike Nolan had actually turned down the Packers position. What is ur gut on what actually happened? Given the marked improvement that the 49er defense displayed after Nolan departed the 49ers, I am actually surprised that Nolan is in such high demand. I would assume a seasoned exec like Ted Thompson would be able to see through a lot of Nolan's BS. Any thoughts?

To be honest I was rather skeptical about the post because his interaction with the AD in BC just didn't sound like something Coach Singletary would want to deal with. Coach "wants winners," but I don't think he wants deal with an OC that might shop himself around behind his back either.

Matt,

Since Jagodzinski is not interviewing for the OC, do the Niners have anymore interviews scheduled for tomorrow like a Gil Haskell, or a Paul Hackett? Is Paul Hackett still under contract with the Raiders or did his contract end like every Raider Coach?

Jeff Jagodzinski was counting on Jim Mora in Seattle for employment. Might still happen, we'll see?

I'm very thankful to hear this wasn't true. I almost blew a gasket when I heard you on KNBR.

He would be a horrible option.

There has to be a way to get the scoop on how the interview process is going. I know the Niners are tight lipped, but what about the coaches being interviewed or the people "in the know" around them? Is there any indication how the coaches being interviewed feel about coming to the orginazation after speaking with our staff?

I must say that I am happy the orginization is being tight lipped for once. They have always been very loose lipped on such matters.

I dont disagree, but the suspense is brutal.

Agreed. Can't wait to find out either. I do wish there was a clear timeline as to when a hire might happen. That would ease the anxiety a bit. On the other hand, it also makes for an exciting start to the off season.

I also agree that it would be nice to get the interviewee's take on their interviews and impression of the orginization as well as their thought's on Singletary and GM Scot McCloughan.

Matt,

Thanks for all your work. Three quick; random questions.
1) DE Oliver from a couple years ago...where is he?
2) Norv Turner . . . any chance at being fired now?
3) Do the Niners get any compensation picks this year?
4) Whats up with Ahmed Brooks?
Thanks

I heard the niners get two compensatory picks. They will have nine picks in this years draft.(I think?)

You're human...it's why they put erasers on the end of pencils, we all make mistakes. I think it's one of many things fans love about Singletary...he fesses up to the mistakes he makes and learns from them. I always look for your posts on 49er Webzone...they're the ones I read first...always. Keep up the great work, we diehards really rely on your insightful reporting.

matt do you happen to know whether oj atogwe of the rams has already received an extension? do you think there is a chance they let him walk? i think he'd be an ideal fit and upgrade our defense drastically

Matt-Thanks for the real scoop. Mike Lombardi tends to throw things out there as if her had some inside scoop......whatever. Jeff Jag would be a poor choice as Mike Sing needs someone who is going to stick around for awhile. Jeff suffers from the Bobby Petrino DNA. I still think Scott L. is the man but looks like they have a good list to pick from.

I usually like Lombardi and his insights. Looks like he's being pulled into that national media trap of hearing a rumor and reporting it as fact.

The Jagodzinski rumor is preposterous enough that it might have been planted by the Niners with a suspected "leaker" in the building to ferret him/her out. Check out if there are any administrative firings that occur in the upcoming days. I think it's outrageous that these leakers are allowing the national media to scoop our own beloved Matt on his own beat. Hang 'em high.

Very interesting thought. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but it wouldn't suprise me if it were true. As they say, truth is stranger than fiction.

Houston9er, as a Niner fan in Texas, you must be having a bit of fun watching and reading about the Cowboys disintegration and Jerry Jones looking like he's heading down the Al Davis Expressway. Is it a growing thought in Texas that the Cowboys will never win as long as Jones thinks he's a GM?

Melvin Oliver is currently not on an NFL team. I don't think he has been on a team since the 49ers cut him after the '07 season.

Yeah it would be nice to remove the leaker. There's no place in an nfl organization for a blabber mouth like that. We need to excommunicate this guy, or gal (don't want to be sexist!) before he really screws us over and starts blabbin niner news to other teams. We definitely don't want any team to have any kind of advantage over us, even if it's as arbitrary as a player injury we are keeping quiet. We need all the help we can get; I want a championship game at the 'Stick in the next year or two. Doesn't everyone else?

Guys - These leaks almost always come from the candidates for this job or their agents. Its keeps their name in the press and makes them a "hot commodity” for coaching jobs. They don’t want to fade into irrelevance. To think the 49ers would waste their time making up a candidate for the OC job to then find the source of a leak is silly. Either Lombardi had bad info or he was told by Jagodzinski's camp that he was interviewing with the 49ers.

You are definitely correct in saying that candidates and agents make this stuff up for publicity. However, the 9ers making up a rumor isn't completely out of the question. Who knows how this rumor got started but Skeebers angle is the most interesting.

The Cowboy fans I know either hate JJ or love him for spending so much on players. There's really no in between. At this point, I'd say JJ isn't taking as much heat as Wade Phillips. The natives are definitely restless any way you look at it.

Would Coach Singletary be willing to wait for Pat Shurmer to interview?

Questions: 1) DE Oliver from a couple years ago...where is he? 2) Norv Turner . . . any chance at being fired now? 3) Do the Niners get any compensation picks this year?

My responses: 1) Oliver was released in July and has never caught on with another team.

2) Norv Turner has a 12-2 record in December and January with the Chargers despite a bunch of injuries to the team's star players (Rivers, Tomlinson, Gates last year; Merriman, Tomlinson and Gates this year). The Chargers' brass has repeatedly said since the middle of the season that Turner would be back.

3) The 49ers should get two comp picks. Here is what I've written on that subject:

http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/2008/07/49ers-likely-to-receive-two-compensatory-picks-in-09-draft.html

--Matt M.

Prior to the Hostler debacle, weren't Hoener and Sullivan considered for OC? Why not now? And if everyone was too good at their job to be promoted, no one would ever be able to move up the ladder. Singletary's choice? Or no current staff member wants the job or is qualified?

Thank
