Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson is a candidate for the 49ers' offensive coordinator position, it has been learned.
It is not known whether the 49ers will interview
Jackson's history
2008: QB coach, Ravens
2007: Offensive coordinator, Falcons
2004-06: WRs coach, Bengals
2003: Offensive coordinator, Redskins
2001-02: RBs coach, Redskins
1997-2000: Offensive coordinator, USC
1996: Offensive coordinator, Cal
1992-95: RBs coach, Arizona State
1990-91: RBs coachSpecial teams, Cal State Fullerton
1987-89: RBs coach, University of the Pacific

Well there's a curveball. Glad to hear it due to the proven success of the Ravens O last season. Nice balance of run and going deep. Now we just need a quarterback who can stretch the field.
Mark Sanchez anyone?
No thank you...I would rather have Stafford over Sanchez
I think it's become evident that Coach Sing wants someone that will mold a young QB. Linehan has a connection to Smith, Jagodzinski groomed Ryan, now the QB coach that did what he did with Flacco. This probably means - and it's pretty obvious - that Hill isn't the future. I wonder if this means, however, if someone like Sanchez (if he falls to 10) will be picked with our first pick, or if McSing has already decided to keep Smith.
Matt, what do you know about Jackson? What style of Offense has he ran when he was OC?
Looking at his previous employment, it scares me a bit as it appears that he has been fired after his first year at every NFL stop.
I've said it once and I'll continue to say it until it happens, they should not use their first round pick on a QB. Too much pressure to play him.
There will be several very good quarterbacks in the second or even third round, guys like Graham Harrell and possibly Chase Daniel barring a great Combine performance, and if they take one of them there's far less pressure to play them as rookies and ruin them.
what success? The Ravens were horrible on offense as were the Falcons in 2007. This guys does not impress me at all
Anyone else notice on Jackson's history that Matt posted that Jackson only lasted 1 year in his 2 previous NFL OC jobs? That can't be a good sign.
Ho Hum. I want Mooch back. Bring back the West Coast Off. He can groom a QB and QB coach for the future. Look what he did with Garcia. We can bring back Garcia or use Hill who is like Garcia part duex.
Interesting, let's get an interview underway so we know where we stand. Another guy I'd like an interview with is Ken Anderson. Raji senior bowl practice looked like a stud. If Stafford were to fall to us at 10 I just dont see how you pass him up.
note that when he lost his OC positions in 2003 and 2007, there head coaching changes at those teams.
Good catch. I was just about to bring that up. After 2003 season, Steve Spurrier resigned and Jackson didn't have much to work with in my opinion because Spurrier kept on bringing in his Florida guys and they were not good at all. Then in 2007, Petrino quit in the middle of his first season. Atlanta had little to no talent on offense that year. Vick got into legal troubles and they had scrub QBs to replace Vick. Looks like in his 2 OC gigs, he was put in a tough position by the HCs.
If he can bring Ed Reed, Hali Ngota and Ray Lewis with him, he can probably get by running a Ravens-style offense and protecting his QB as much as he protected Flacco. Otherwise, he'll have to come up with some new tricks.
WHEEEWWW! Fer a hot second my eyes deceived me, I thought the blog post was titled "Ravens WR Coach..."
I don't know much about Hue, but I hope they interview him.
And the 49ers should not not not draft a QB in the 1st round. They'd have to commit too many $$$ to him and QB isn't even the teams highest priority. They need OLinemen and DLinemen that can protect our QB, and terrorize opposing QBs, first and foremost.
What?! Someone the 49ers discussed "early in the process?" Stop the presses! Fans decrying the "slow process" and "no plan" are fainting away where they stand!
I noticed that too. He was the falcons OC in '07! Man they were horrible in '07. I say..."next"!
Seems like a bit of a reach.
I really wish the Jets and Schottenheimer would figure out what they are going to do with eachother. I think Brian would be a great fit, maybe not a real long term solution, but a great fit for a couple years. I would also like to see Zampese's name show up in one of these articles.
They were built around Vick and that's where they put all their eggs. No O-Line, no back up QBs. Joey Harrington? Chris Redman? An aging Warrick Dunn? As stated before, he was put into a HORRIBLE position where he couldn't really succeed.
As for the ravens this year... he wasn't OC. Can't really put the offense on him. He did well with Flacco, who wasn't even supposed to start this year.
OMG!!!! Come on Mike! Enough already! I would love to be in the room when Mike and Scot are discussing OC's. For someone who said they wanted to make a hire "yesterday" and had a list that would be narrowed down soon are sure taking their good ol'time. I guess they forgot to mention that the other 31 teams would narrow their list for them by hiring their own OC's

Sign JahGodSonski! He's our guy!
I am tired of the same old recycled coaches, is there a chance that McSing could find an upcoming inventive type of coach? I know, Sing wants the strong running attack, but I hope we look more for successful coaches and not just run-minded coaches.
Before you ask, no I do not have any in mind but I am sure somebody, more knowledgeable than me on here, has a few in mind.
I'm gonna slightly change a line from The Godfather, re: the Ravens. Leave the coach - take the quarterback. (obviously, Baltimore wouldn't trade their QB for the whole 49er team and all their draft choices next year, so I'm only kidding) Actually I'm not excited by what their coaches did with the Ravens offense last year.
Matt,
Why Rick Dennison would be the best fit for the OC job.
Bobb McKittrick had the offensive blueprint for the west coast offensive line. With McKittrick at the helm the 49ers suffered little lapse in the offensive line shuffle from year to year. I remember when McKittrick was offered an OC (or was it a HC job) Seifert stepped up and convinced the 49ers brass to match the offer, knowing the importance of an excellent OL coach. Shanahan obviously took the same offensive line philosophy with him to Denver as he was the model for teams that were consistently in the play-offs (or at least the hunt) for nearly 13 years. That’s hard to do when you’re drafting that high year after year.
Shanahan's offensive lines were so good that he was able to put numerous running backs in the system. i.e. Terrell Davis, Mike Anderson, Olandis Gary, Clinton Portis, Reuben Droughns etc. and make them NFL stars.
If Rick Dennison has gained this knowledge; I say hire him.
The niners need to go back to the West Coast offense that made them Super Bowl Champs and they should start with a Bill Walsh protege with experience not a college coach.Denny Green is the man to take us back to the promise land singeltary needs to set up a interview and hire him, his track record as a offensive coach speaks for itself.
Hue Jackson would be a terrific offensive coordinator for our team! He's had tremendous success as a positions coach, getting more out of T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chad Johnson at Cincinnati than anyone else has ever been able to get, and getting great production out of Joe Flacco in his rookie season. He also got great years from Stephen Davis when he was the running backs coach at Washington. As the offensive coordinator at USC, he developed Carson Palmer into a top pro prospect.
His two NFL offensive coordinator experiences were marred by adverse circumstances. In Washington, he was charged with making Steve Spurrier's college system work in the pros, and that was a lost cause. Spurrier DID entrust Jackson with the playcalling responsibilities, and that was the first time Spurrier ever did so. In Atlanta, Jackson arrived just in time to see his starting quarterback get arrested for running a dog-fighting operation. Then his head coach quit before the season was over. It's tough to blame Jackson for a less-than-stellar offensive showing.
My first choice for our offensive coordinator position is Jagodzinski, but Jackson is a close second. I'm truly excited by the possibility. Jackson seems to be in demand, so I hope we have a real shot at him.
Might be tough to get him if Rex Ryan and the Jets are interested.
Honestly? Probably the best canidate available at this point... I hope they get him, seems most qualified OC for what Sing is looking for. We need an OC that can coach position players and call plays.... Like it...Do it...
At first glance, I was like ohhh noooo....are we still trying to build the boring Ravens West out here in SF.
But after looking through his history, he has some nice exrerience...let's hope we move quickly!
