Apparently, there was some competition for Dan Reeves' services, after all.
Reeves is likely to take a role with the Cowboys as a consultant, ESPN reported this evening.
His reported job with the Cowboys makes sense. Reeves was an NFL head coach for 23 years. He last served as an offensive coordinator with the Cowboys in 1980. While Reeves has not coached since 2003 when he was fired as Falcons coach, he did serve as a consultant for the Texans in 2005.

Speaking of the Cowgirls, I just saw this BS. I hate that team!
I hate the cowgirls also, but frankly I am not all that upset about this, he hasn't been in the league coaching for quite a while, what makes anyone think he can handle the league today.
Good lord, we haven't even HIRED the OC yet and he's already been poached. This run of luck is amazing.
I'll repost as this thread just arrived -
It's also very possible that people (Reeves) shopping for jobs know where to get exposure.
Thanks Dan, Jerry wants whatever we want first so, have a good time in Big D.
There's plenty of drama to go around.
Let's also keep in mind that agents are in business to make money. If we play possum we don't necessarily look weak, just businesslike.
Jagz was a concern for Sing as a flight risk and justifiably so.
One thing Sing impresses me with is his ability to communicate. If he's got reservations about someone now, move on. I'm sure he's well aware of the magnitude of this hire, so why rush it like NoPlan did.
Jerry J.O. is still praying someone takes Garrett off his hands too I'm sure.
He's grasping at straws and avoiding the obvious mistake he made with Wade.
Working for Jerry as ALMOST as insignificant as coaching for Al.
Jerry calls the shots. It's all about fannies in the seats and selling that merch.
Start the rumors now about Vick to Dallas, Reeves is there.
It wasn't so much Reeves as it was the speculation that Phillips and Jones could possibly lure Manusky away.
Let's hope our DC is happy to stay on Sings' staff.
He's under contract and can't make a lateral move, so there's not much to worry about.
I'm beginning to think Sing has a desire to speak to someone currently employed with the SB teams.
If so, we'll hear about it next week.
As for the drama, we can all continue to speculate about the possibilities.
Marc: Let's hope so.
It's disconcerting that the search has, a) taken so long, and b) involved so many candidates being interviewed. And that's without mentioning the Linehan debacle (which I've now mentioned...).
The good teams, the successful teams, just don't go through this "charade" when hiring key personnel. They're ahead of the game.
I truly hope Coach Sting has the foresight to put in place a long-term plan/system, which is able to sustain itself with promotions from within of groomed, prepared staff, to step in seamlessly when our OC's/DC's etc leave. Taking this long to find our 7th OC in 7 years is disconcerting, to say the least.
TJH I think the plan was solid, Linehan bombed the parade.
Now I'm sure the field got more convoluted with the TB and NYJ and Denver and KC staffs getting overhauled.
Nolan reacted too quickly with Hostler and I think Sing is doing his best not to be hasty now.
I have to believe Scot is as deep in this process as Sing is. They both need stability on the sideline now.
I'm OK with the thought that we're waiting on the SB now, we'll see?
Ken Anderson is with Pittsburgh, Grimm is an interesting suggestion too. I don't think Russ has any OC experience however.
I wonder quietly if Fassel or Billick are being contacted too.
I guess we'll here the verdict soon, lot's of changes coming and hopefully, all for the better.
I still feel pretty comfortable with Hue Jackson's resume too.
Gotta believe he worked with Mike in Baltimore? Not sure of the timelines though.
Matt, What do you think the deadline is for hiring the OC? If this runs on for a few more weeks, teams could start refusing to let guys interview (as happened to us previously when Norv Turner left).
Yeah, Hue Jackson, what happened to him? He's not been back since, and we've talked to others. If he's in the running still, he should be back for a second sometime soon, like this week.
No offence Marc, but if the plan was "soild", we wouldn't be in this position. And you're absolutely right, the turnover of coaches at so many other teams is a major issue. I'm hoping we aren't looked at as the last resort, you know, what with our less than stellar recent reputation, and questionable management.
Matt,
When Coach Singletary surfaces from the underground could you please ask him why two coaches interviewed, but took another job. Is his "smash mouth" philosophy that he is imposing running off coaches? Should he rethink his philosophy considering he never was a coordinator in the NFL?
Did Wade Phillips replace Dan Reeves in Denver?
MATT! I 100% feel that I have figured out who the next offensive coordinator is and why its taking so long. Its a name that no one has even really considered.
Maurice Carthon.. Take a look at his resume. Its amazing and fits exactly what Singletary wants?
Former experience calling plays and being offensive coordinator? CHECK
OC with the Browns for 2 years
OC with the Cowboys under Parcells for 2 years
OC with Detriot for 2 years.
Physical run opposing offense? CHECk
Currently the Cardinals RB coach.
Droughns finished sixth in the AFC in 2005 with 1,232 yards rushing and became the first Browns back since 1985 to top the 1,000-yard rushing plateau.
Carthon joined the Browns in 2005 and led an offensive unit that finished the season ranked 8th in the NFL with 1,601 yards from scrimmage (1,232 rushing and 369 receiving).
In his two seasons with the Lions, Carthon was instrumental in helping increase the Lions’ running game average in 2001 (4.0 yard avg.) and 2002 (4.1 yard avg.). In addition, running back James Stewart posted a career-best 4.8 avg. in 2001 and then came back in 2002 to record his second career 1,000-yard rushing season with 1,021 yards on 231 carries (4.4 yard avg.).
READ UP MATT AND GET BACK TO US. I think I just hit nail on head. Why else would Singletary be dragging his feet if it wasn't to wait for Carthon? Grimm is too close to be hired a HC as is.

this could just be a play at trying to coax more money out of the niners. or this could just be him wanting to spend time with his family (son-in-law) too.
From the NFP and Mile Lombardi:
I feel that Reeves would have helped Mike Singletary become a better head coach, but he could not help him improve the overall offense. Everyone I talked to here in Tampa on Monday agrees that the 49ers will not recover from their decision to fire Mike Martz, and whomever they hire will not be as good or as effective. Martz may take a lot of hits in the media, but he’s an outstanding offensive coach.
I still Coach Sing has a plan. He let go of Martz immediately and signed Rathman immediately. I heard he is a very organized person so it's OK id he takes his time as long as he gets it right.
I just don't want to hear those rumors that they want to bring in Vick. The 49ers to return back to being a classy teams with such players as Montana, Young, Lott, Craig, Sapolu, Jones, etc.
The last time they won the Superbowl they had Deion and Ricky Watters, two "me first" players. When they brought in Lawrence Philips, it ended Young's career because of a missed block. The last time the 49ers went to the playoffs, they had T.O. Now, outside of the Bay Area, who would want to root for our team when they make the playoffs.
When the 49ers were very good, other cities hated us because we were always winning, but they respected the 49ers for winning with class.
The knock on Sing a couple of years earlier when he was interviewing for HC positions was that he didn't have a ready list of people he wanted on his staff. I wonder if this is that weakness that is showing thru. I know there is concern about picking the perfect OC, one that is experienced, yet not so great that he will get HC consideration next year. We need to pick the dog with the fewest fleas and make a commitment. A good OC will adapt to the program and Sing has to show enough ability to adapt to any success that we may have. Hire a guy for a couple of years at a high salary, so that he doesn't have the financial incentive to leave, and groom Rathman. Just like the QB situation.
This is getting embarrassing. I agree Hue Jackson's resume looks pretty good. I could see him as the OC & having Rathman maybe help out on the running plays to get his feet wet.
Getting Reeves in here as a CONSULTANT would have been awesome IMO. It sucks to lose him & have the Cowgirls hire him now for that position.
Matt
There's an article about TJ H being of great interest to the niners. I just read on wiki that Hue Jackson developed TJ and helped him be his most productive. Any thoughts?
Shame on you for snooping around behind enemy lines. ;)
As you've stated, it's complete BS, and the city of Dallas is full of it.
If we're going to plan B & looking at QB Coaches I think Ken Zampese should be brought in to take a look. Wasn't he high on our hot list before? He has a solid Offensive resume if I remember right. I see him as the type of guy/OC who would stay at his new position for 2-3 years, not one to bolt rightaway.
Question: Matt There's an article about TJ H being of great interest to the niners. I just read on wiki that Hue Jackson developed TJ and helped him be his most productive. Any thoughts?
My response: Really? The 49ers could be interested in T.J. Houshmandzadeh? Makes you wonder where those rumors get started . . .

--Matt M.
Hey Matt here's another PFT rumor for you, the Niners are going to interview Jimmy Raye, the Jets RB coach for the OC position.
http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/01/27/niners-to-talk-to-raye/
WHO? Read his bio and I still don't know who he is. What is the 60-something coaches? Does Sing not think there is enough veteran leadership on the team?
The only thing getting embarrassing around here are the people who think taking your time over an important hire is embarrassing. For the life of me, what is embarrassing and who is embarrassed? As far as I can tell, Linehan is the only one so far who needs to feel embarrassed. He told Matt it was a family decision. Then took the Detroit job and Matt pointed out this was only a 1.5 hr. commute for him. Then we find out he's moving to Detroit. That makes him a stone cold liar. And gutless, since the real reason was that he was intimidated by working for Singletary. As would any weak-kneed applicant. If you want a strong HC, let the man finish his hiring and quit yakking about a process that you have absolutely no knowledge about.
Its early.
Question: Hey Matt here's another PFT rumor for you, the Niners are going to interview Jimmy Raye, the Jets RB coach for the OC position. http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/01/27/niners-to-talk-to-raye/ WHO?
My response: Jimmy Raye has coached more than 30 years in the NFL. He turns 63 in March. Raye and Norv Turner coached together with the Rams in early 1980s. Jim Hostler learned the digit system from Raye when Hostler worked under Raye with the Chiefs in 2000. --Matt M.
Oh, he's the guy that trained Jim Hostler.....Awesome!
Hey, someone has to do the dirty work =)
Matt, names of assistants involved with the Super Bowl teams have been discussed as possible OC candidates--Grimm, Anderson, Carthon among them. Do you have any reason to think any of them are /or are not likely targets?
Question: Matt, names of assistants involved with the Super Bowl teams have been discussed as possible OC candidates--Grimm, Anderson, Carthon among them. Do you have any reason to think any of them are /or are not likely targets?
My response: Perhaps things have changed, but, as I noted in that Q&A Sunday evening, I have been led to believe the club is not waiting on any Super Bowl assistants. I'd think Russ Grimm is not an option. He is Whisenhunt's assistant head coach, so why would he want to leave a Super Bowl team? Carthon ran into a lot of difficulties as Browns O.C. in 2005-06. Anderson was a coordinator for the Bengals from 1996-2000. --Matt M.
Much more info than his bio laid out. Thanks Matt. I guess if Sing is looking for a veteran coach to mentor either Rathman or a QB coach than some of these interviews make sense. Is there any indication that the organization is going to shed some light on the process? It's been a month since we have heard from anyone.
Matt, any reasoning behind not including Tom Clements as a possible solution to OC?
Matt, Here's a name I think that might arise after the Super Bowl, Maurice Carthon. He was an OC in the past, which is a prerequisite of Singletary and I believe was a strong proponent of the run. I think he would appeal to what Singletary wants to accomplish. I doubt Russ Grimm would leave AZ as he is the assistant head coach. Your thoughts.
THE "SING" CLUB
LOL! Well all the "Sing" club is out in force again today! The same people who were so ecstatic that "Sing" was signed before he left the shower room after the last game as if he was so wanted! And these same people are here commenting day after day that a coach should only be signed after much Socrates like deliberation and contemplation by the York front office and "Sing."
So each day that goes by, these coaches interviewed say thanks but no thanks to the 49ers Organization. Then we read the pro "Sing" club attack who is the latest to give "Sing" the Bronx cheer and take the next flight out of town as fast as he can!
If it wasn't so sad it would be hilarious! But what is really hilarious is the "Sing" club daily singing the praises of some other coach they hope will join the "Sing" club and actually sign with the club. But they never ask the question that they don't want to hear the answer too. The question? What's the REAL CAUSE so many have turned their "Sing" down? Could it be his want to reinstate and 80's offense that is a replica of the Woody Hayes belief that 3 things happen when you pass, and 2 are bad and only 1 good ( a drop, an interception, and a completion.) So NEVER pass unless it's 3rd and 30!
Well, I'll continue to see the Yorks and "Sing" go farther down the list and the days pass and the coaches get out of town! And get a good laugh reading the "Sing" club diss another OC hopeful after his adios! So "Sing" club, keep up the good work! It's my Comic page everyday! And sooner or later someone who is desperate for a job in this economic climate will finally sign and then you guys can crown him the "most wanted OC in the League!" I'll have another laugh! And then we'll all have the sad part. Going to Candlestick to see a 49er team struggle to hit the 500 mark.
And next year the "Sing" club can find someone else to blame! Then my fun can start all over again!
I see a few people earlier had the same thoughts about Carthon, sorry didn't read all the comments. Just was going over the Super Bowl teams coaches roster. Why else would this be taking so long??? Can't say that anyone else is an exciting candidate. Jimmy Raye, according to Matt Barrows, had the Raiders 25th and 29th in rushing his two years as OC. Not exactly knocks your socks off.

Comment: Reeves to Dallas: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3863021
My response: Hmmm. Thanks for the timely update. --Matt M.
Matt, have you seen the rumors out of Ft Worth that A. Manusky has/will be fired; and B. he will be hired as the D Coord in Dallas? Seems highly unlikely, but would be interested to know if you have heard anything.
Thanks as always for the great blog.
Matt, Haskell is not retiring, and the niners know it. Why do you think he is not getting any love from his hometown team.
Denny Green, Tom Cable, Ken Anderson, Gil haskell, Mike Holmgren? any chance for 1 of thes guys?
It seems like whoever Sing wants or is interviewing is going to all the other teams like the Rams, Seahawks, Norv Turner and now Pretty boy Jones, i predict he will have pearly whites in the 09 season.
The "Sing" club or The Faithful as you could also call us. Maybe the fickle fan slayers? Whatever floats your boat, dude.
Either way, what's the point of all the crying? We don't know the real reason behind Linehan's decision. If he was hired, this would have been mute anyways, although you would have found something else to whine about I'm sure. As for Reeves, who even knows if he was still considered for the position or even a serious candidate? You don't know what happens behind closed doors like the rest of us, but you sure do think the worst. Do you ever even post anything remotely positive? Are you this negative with everything in like? Sad really...
What I can say though is Sing was the clear choice. It's only been about 4 weeks since the end of the season. At that point did he not deserve the HCing job? Please... He had full support from The Faithful, as well as full support from the locker room and the media. He ended the season 5-4 with a 13th ranked D. He made necessary changes to the offense and had Martz in check -- something few (if any) coaches have been able to accomplish, which resulted in much improved offensive play.
I have to say, I once knew a woman named Sherry. You two have a lot in common other than a similar name.
Question: Matt, have you seen the rumors out of Ft Worth that A. Manusky has/will be fired; and B. he will be hired as the D Coord in Dallas?
My response: Yes, I checked into all that yesterday. I spoke with the 49ers. And I spoke with Greg Manusky. I did not find anything to support the newspaper report. Therefore, I chose not to write about it. --Matt M.
Skeebers – I know this…Singletary announced he was going to have his OC “yesterday”. Obviously he didn’t even have a solid plan otherwise he would have had his man soon after he fired Martz which is now SEVERAL WEEKS LATER. As much as I’m a big Singletary supporter we’re going to have to live with his Rookie growing pains. I know Martz had his faults & he didn’t match up with what Sing was looking for but you don’t get rid of that caliber of an OC without having “your guy(s)” ready in line to immediately succeed him. This is a crucial hire that the success of this team & our drafted QB who we aim to develop is riding on especially coupled with a HC who’s very limited in his Offensive knowledge. So 4 weeks later & we’re still searching??? Hell yes it’s embarrassing. If Linehan was “his man” this whole time he should of had his homework done & known he was going to take the job before firing Martz (salary negotiations pending but that wasn’t the reason he bailed.) He had weeks to get that done as Linehan was sitting at home joining us on Sundays watching the games. There wouldn’t have been any tampering here if Singletary phoned him on the weeks prior to the offseason to get his research done. I like that he’s being thorough but before you fire your OC who did a great job & deserved a lot of credit in turning around your Offense you should have had your successor immediately ready to take over. That’s my main beef.
Baloney. He didn't announce he'd have an OC "yesterday," he said he'd like to have one. This remark assumes the listener is capable of understanding him to mean ASAP. Apparently, you are not that proficient. You can't conduct interviews for an OC while you're preparing for opponents while a season is in progress, or when you have not yet been named HC. A "list" is not something that is written in stone - people on the list get hired, die, whatever. You don't keep a coach that does not suit you, you get one who does. 1 week, 3, 4 - what the hell does it matter!? There's no grades for quickness. Only correctness. Wait till he hires someone and then tell us whether his "choice" is embarrassing, not whether his method of making the choice is. You want embarrassing, start following the clown shows in Oakland and Dallas.
Who says you can't call a former HC & have some conversations with him during the season?? Your fighting to get the interim label off & be the permanent HC. The team was turning around with noticeable improvement & competitiveness on the field. You had to be thinking you had a shot & your superiors were going to ask you what your plans were for the Offense. We're not talking about official interviews but seeing if Linehan was interested, how he would like to work with him, & if their philosophies agreed. He could have informally locked him up before the season ended with a verbal agreement with Linehan if Singletary liked him & vice-versa. This is what I mean that he could have had his man almost guaranteed before letting go of Martz. The interviews then would have just been a formality. Not even a coaching search needed period. Singletary could have set aside some time in the evenings to get this done. I'm just talking about Linehan who just so happened to be his #1 choice. I'll buy that it isn't possible with the other active coaches but not with Linehan.
"Yes, I checked into all that yesterday. I spoke with the 49ers. And I spoke with Greg Manusky. I did not find anything to support the newspaper report. Therefore, I chose not to write about it."
And that's pretty much why you're the best.
it's really funny that this Shiel Kapadia is using your blog answers as a basis for the rumors of TJ H wanting to come to the niners. I guess that's how other blogs handle the bones you feed to us hungry fans =D
Hey "Sing" Club president???
tick...tick...tick....tick....tick....tick....tick..
