Ted Robinson will become the fifth radio play-by-play announcer in the 63-year history of the 49ers, the club announced this morning. Robinson replaces Joe Starkey, who announced his retirement last month.

"The San Francisco 49ers enjoy a proud history as a premier football organization and are now well positioned to build upon that legacy," Robinson said in a statement released through the team. "I am sincerely honored to be added to the short but esteemed list of distinguished announcers who played a role in bringing the 49ers accomplishments on the field to life."

Robinson has ties to the organization, serving as the third member of the 49ers radio broadcast team in 1983 with Don Klein and Don Heinrich. He also anchored pre/post-game coverage on 49ers radio network from 1983-86 and anchored the 49ers locker room coverage after 1985 Super Bowl victory.

"We are extremely excited that Ted Robinson has rejoined the 49ers family," 49ers chief operating officer Andy Dolich said. "He has a wealth of experience at every level of broadcasting and is highly respected amongst his peers and sports fans throughout Northern California."

Robinson joins an exclusive list of announcers who have described 49ers action on the radio: Bob Fouts (1946-62), Lon Simmons (1963-1980, 1987-88), Don Klein (1981-86) and Starkey (1989-2008).

CORRECTION: Ron Kroichick of the SF Chronicle reports the list supplied by the 49ers was incorrect. Here are the 49ers' announcers through the years . . . Bud Foster (1946-49, '51-'53), Fred Hessler (1954), Roy Storey (1955-'57), Bob Fouts (1955, 1957-'59), Lon Simmons (1960-'80, 1987-88), Don Klein (1981-'86) and Joe Starkey (1989-2008).

Robinson worked as a radio and television announcer for the San Francisco Giants for nine seasons, as the television announcer for the Oakland A's for three seasons, as television announcer for the Warriors and also as radio announcer for Stanford football.

Boo! Like I said before, the only time I can stand Ted Robinson is when McEnroe does all the talking.

I like Ted. He a real pro.

Not the commanding voice the Niners deserver. Robinson was adequate when he did Giants games but only because the rest of the cast was so strong....now he has to carry the show the entire game? There has to have been a better candidate out there somewhere? I heard him covering for the Razor and Mr T last week on KNBR and he seemed ill prepared. Oh well....at least the team will be winning!

I like to hear Ted, but Joe Fonzi is undefeated!

I think it is a wonderful choice! He is very good and I expect he will work well with Gary Plummer.

Re: McCloughan spending a 2nd on Baas despite not wanting to spend money on guards.

I always thought McCloughan's comments were in response to the inflation of OG salaries following Steve Hutchinson's big pay day. I'm pretty sure the Baas pick was either before Hutchinson's deal or at least before the second big OG cash-in.

Anyway, now that McNolan has split do we have to start referring to McSingletary?

It was during the whole Smiley thing. I also seem to remember that during that whole thing he stated that he would have to re-evaluate his thinking with the big paydays forcing the market upwards. His thinking is also that it is better (cheaper) to replace thru the draft than the FA market.

Also, I think McSingletary is better than SingleCloughin. Sounds like they only have 1 thought.

Ted Robinson comes across on the afternoon KNBR as a pompous know it all. I have to turn off the radio after a few minutes. That's all I can handle.

i'm happy to see Ted back to call games at the old Stick ....
when you posted here on your blog Matt that Joe is leaving by the end of the season, i was the only person that's hoping to hear Ted calling 49ers games...so it's never too late for a christmas gift.
what do you think Matt?? and was there other people that considered for the opening??

Ted Robinson is an announcer first and not a radio host.

That has not been his history and he only fills in because he is a Northern California resident who looks forward to the brief respite during the holidays.

To base him on his KNBR 'performance' is really dumb. Plus, not sure what broadcasts you are listening to, but he does not come off as pompous to me as he actually ALLOWS people to speak their mind in their entirety unlike most of the KNBR hosts who cut off callers in mid-stream.

I look forward to him taking over although it would have been interesting to see Joe Fonzi take over as he is totally home grown.

Everyone seems to have forgotten the 49ers first broadcaster-- Bud Foster. I guess there aren't too many of us around that remember the team in the 40's. Bud Foster also did the Oakland Oaks games in the Pacific Coast League and, in my opinion, was the best of all the 49er broadcasters. I don't believe Fouts came onto the scene until the 1950's. I listened to Murph and Mac this morning and they didn't mention Foster either. Any comments?

I agree with Realfan 49. Can't stand him on KNBR for more than a coupld of minutes. He does come off as a smug know it all but he will be ok as play by play guy. Would much rather have seen Joe Fonzi get the job.

"Everyone seems to have forgotten the 49ers first broadcaster-- Bud Foster."

I thought Bud Foster was great too. Until I got the PDR, I always listened to the radio instead of the TV guys. Lon Simmons is my other favorite.

I feel sorry for anyone who listens to "The Razor" or Damon Bruce, and then thinks Ted Robinson is smug.

Who is Matt?

Matt Maiocco is in his 14th year covering the 49ers. He has reported for The Press Democrat since 2000. He is a three-time winner of Pro Football Writers of America awards. Rotoworld.com ranked "Instant 49ers" as the No. 2 NFL team blog in the country in 2007. Maiocco has written two books, "Roger Craig's Tales from the 49ers Sideline" and "San Francisco 49ers: Where Have You Gone?" Matt can also be heard regularly on KNBR (680-AM) during the season. He is also been added this season as a regular guest on ESPN's "First Take."
