The Rams and Seahawks have new head coaches (Steve Spagnuolo and Jim Mora, respectively). The 49ers awarded the permanent head-coaching job to Mike Singletary, who proved himself during his trial run over the final nine games of the season.
Even the Cardinals - winners of the NFC West and narrow losers a week ago in the Super Bowl - are not immune to dramatic changes.
The coach, Ken Whisenhunt, remains in place. But he will be hiring two new coordinators. Todd Haley, who ran the offense, is now Chiefs head coach. And Whisenhunt fired defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast.
There are rumblings two recent 49ers discards could be hired to those top roles with the Cardinals.
File this one in the rumor category . . . but I've heard that the Cardinals called the 49ers on Friday to ask for the cell number of Mike Martz, whom Singletary fired two days after the season. I have not been able to confirm this happened, so take it for what it's worth.
So might Whisenhunt seriously consider Martz as the man to take over the offense? Might that help convince Kurt Warner to go ahead and sign a two-year deal to remain with the Cardinals? (Or not.) Certainly, the Cardinals' talent on offense would seem to be a better fit for Martz's offensive style than what he had last season with the 49ers.
Wouldn't that be great? Let's face it, the NFC West is a more enjoyable division when Martz is around.
And Billy Davis is considered a top candidate to replace Pendergast as defensive coordinator. Mike Nolan hired
This could get very interesting.

Oh my. That might even be enough to get Boldin to stay. This could turn ugly for the rest of the NFC real fast.
That would be interesting if Martz lands in Arizona. The Cardinals are really facing a lot of challenges with Boldin more than likely going out and replacing both DC and OC. Is that going to affect the momentum they created? I think so.
Are we having a good momentum with the way we finished the season and establishing the philosophy that Singletary wants? I think so too.
I also liked how the team looked under Martz, but we have to realize we would had never done anything in the big games with him as OC. I trust Singeltary with what he is doing for next year.
Coach Martz would be a great pick for the Cards-rivalry often makes great football...
Maybe then the Niners will be on the receiving end of some of those blown play calls that we lost by this season!
Sign on the X!!!
What is this?..A Cardinal blog?? SCREW THE CARDINALS!!!!! SCREW WARNER!!! SCREW BOLDIN!!!! I hope Martz lands there, and screws up the last minute game calling/clock management, and they give up 70 SACKS!!!
It'd really be interesting to see how Warner's 38 year old butt olds up after 70 or so sacks....GO NINERS!
If the Cardinals get Mike Martz then the 49ers have to get Torry Holt
Martz to Arizona could be very, very interesting. He excels with two exceptional wideouts and Fitzgerald/Boldin fit that mold pretty well. Some tidbits to think about: Warner tends to do a good job of not forcing the throw and getting rid of the ball, but the niners have a much better o-line than the cards. I see anywhere from 45-65 sacks if that matchup happens.
If Martz go there, Niners should take one of his weapons away from him, sign Boldin. Besides, Warner is getting old and can't take that many sacks. He is likely to go on IR in mid-season and Leiner will take over. To counter the pass happy division rival, the Niners must get a stud pass rusher with any cost. This is a revenge opportunity for Martz. Singletary will need to pull down his pants often to rally his team. Interesting 09 season...
Singletary won't have to do anything but condition his team to be the most physical dominating wide eyed ass kickers in the league. Bring on Martz, seems like a natural fit for Cards although with a guy like Russ Grimm on the offensive front I don't know how they would get on together.
wouldn't martz have an agent that the cards could contact to get martz's cell #? I dont buy that they would tip off a division opponent of their interest by calling niners
I hope they do promote Billy Davis to DC! That would be worse than Pendergast!
The only way I see them hiring Martz, is if it convinces Warner to stay. Even then, his offense differs from Whiz's. I don't think Martz and Whiz would get along too well either. Of course, I would have no problem with that :)
This upcoming year is shaping up nicely. It's our time to win this damn division. With all the other issues going on in The West, this looks very possible. Bring on FA and the draft already!
I hope Martz goes and Warner retires. That way Martz can start the best QB he ever coached, JTO. Then the Niners can pick him off eight or nine times as well as several strip sacks. The Martz JTO combo would make the division a lock for the Niners.
I think you have to ask the same question that was asked when Martz was hired here: do the Cards have the right personnel? Fitzgerald, Bolden & Breaston are not the quick darting WRs that make Martz' offense so deadly. Would Warner be able survive the pounding? It would be interesting.
I was bummed when mad martz left. To have him and Kurt Warner back in Zona can only mean one thing! A return to the super bowl. I am sure Russ Grimm could work with Martz. And that ladies and gents spells doom and gloom for us Forty Niner fans. I really had a distain for Warner in the old days. Now the guy is just nails. And the way they protect the QB in NFL. Hell Warner can be there another 10 years. Blanda did it. That will be some fun stuff... execpt when they play the Niners. Those will be days I will not watch. BTW - the cards have a fast young talented D. They are going to be really good next year...really good. Warner has a good reason to comeback now. Boldin has a good reason to stay...omg..it's gonna be ugly in the NFC West if you are not a Cards fan..
Funny how you guys who love the "sing thing" seem to give "sing" ALL the credit for his supposed great job as HC. But blame coaches like Marts for failures like the clock running out!
But your proving my point about "sing" making other coaches lightning rods so the press can spin that it wasn't "sing's" fault! It was somebody elses! Like your beloved "sing" you love blaming Martz or anybody else but himself instead of what a good HC would do! TAKE THE HEAT! But that's NOT "sing's" way!! And that's why the 49ers scraped the bottom of the barrel to sign an OC!
If john from hb is actually a niner fan,he must exist in a very dark place.I rail against the denial on this blog that will not accept that the cards are clearly better than the niners, but it doesn/t require a lot of knowledge or imagination to realize we will be better next year and they will not be as good.
Keep your dreams to yourself. Their getting emabarrassing! "Most wide eyed ass kickers in the League."?? I guess to get that out of the team as it now exists, we'd have to trade or dump 3/4 team! Then pick up new players, probably Steelers, Titans, and Giants to be the "wide eyed ass kickers" no matter what "sing" does!
The only "wide eyed ass kicker" I watch on the 49ers each week is Patrick Willis!
Do us a favor and just say: "sing" please make the team better than it's been lately!
Matt, can it really be the case that an organization like the Cardinals would need to call the 49ers to get a phone number. Everyone in the league must know who Martz's agent is, wouldn't they just call him. Sometimes these rumors seem so silly.
I think that Martz an Sing agreed to coeixist for awhile to get through the season but then they always knew they would have to part ways. I don't know enough about the new OC Jimmy Raye but I am going to go with it. It is nice to hear from fans from Mexico like you. I am from the other Monterey (in CA) and I have had season tix since 1970 I am ready for a niner resurgance - lets all pull for the 9ers! I can't wait for the draft and free agency singings.
Hey!! I love the 49ers, geezo...some of my fondest memories are of 49ers Sundays. I have been a fan since the 60's. I even liked the John Madden Raiders.
What I saw on Super Bowl Sunday the Cards "worked" a pretty darn good Steelers team for 95% of the football game. Let's just say this, if the Cards had been there before like the Steelers it wouldn't have been close. I watched a "weak" NFC Champ dismantle a couple of realy good NFC teams. I can't help but to admire the Cards and what they have. I am not a fan of the Cards but I did root for them thoughout the playoffs. They are good and until somebody unseats them, they are the NFC West champs. If their D plays like it did during the playoffs. Exept for 1 quarter against the Eagles.... Fella's we are looking at a very good football team. Reality Sucks don't it?
I'm not quite sure you are familiar with what happens to a football team as it relates to their head coach. Let me educate your negative mind. They will assimulate the head coachs' personality in mind set, work ethic, passion, motivation and the courage to be victorious with selfless effort as a team no matter the cost. It does not matter if we have the players of your "dreams" from the steelers, titans, giants. Why don't you do us all a favor and view some of Coach Singletarys' motivational tutorials and I'm sure even you terry will learn that in the face of adversity and self doubt, a true leader can will men of lesser character to beleive, follow and enjoy the fruits of victory!!
i concur Razoreater -and if Martz is hired by the Cards it will make for some interesting football! Coach Singletary has this great notion that adversity is an opportunity to strengthen and I can only agree!
Oh sweet HEY-ZUES, this is not going to be good. As much as it seems like martz screwed the pooch on alot of those end game play calls, that is not going to happen with Wisenhunt, a former OC himself, at the helm. likewise, the int problem that the niners were having with martz is not going to be a factor is warner decides to stick around because he has a history with martz and his system, and he makes makes great decisions. As for the sack problems, well the arizona line knows what's up if martz comes to town, and they did a really great job keeping warner upright. Oh did I forget fitz and boldin? As much as I love the niners, martz can really nail us bad.
Hi Matt, Martz would torch us if given the chance. It would add some spice to the NFC West if he's hired. The upcoming draft seems pretty deep. Anyone in the top twenty could go top five. There lots of value in trading down if you have the right assessment of the talent. PS, The Super Bowl was not shown on Tensports in India, however there was twenty hours of dart throwing from England over a three day period.
Matt says the Cards are the worst team to make the playoffs, the worst team to win a playoff game and the worst team to get to the Superbowl, so why worry if they get Mike Martz? Being the worst team, they'll come last in the NFC West whoever coaches them, right?
Comment: Matt says the Cards are the worst team to make the playoffs, the worst team to win a playoff game and the worst team to get to the Superbowl
My response: Just so I'm not misquoted, I wrote that the Cardinals were the worst regular-season team THIS SEASON to make the playoffs. Their point differential (plus-1) was the worst of any of the playoff teams. I know I thought (but I'm not sure I wrote) that the Cardinals might be the worst regular-season team to ever make it to the Super Bowl. However, I didn't go through every team and do the research on that. I know the 1979 Rams were also 9-7, but at least they outscored their opponents by a little more during the regular season. --Matt M.
I'm with @hofer36. This is the NFL, not high school. You call the coach's agent to get his number, not the team he just broke up with. Matt's a great reporter so I'm sure I'm missing something but this sounds about as believable as the Vick to 49ers theory.
SCREW THE CARDS!!! I've heard their name one two many times already. They can have Martz, I hope JTO goes too! They had one lucky run, but they'll always be the cardinals!
What are you talking about buddy??
I actually agree with you on the HC being responsible for game management, and "taking the heat", I've always said that was Sing's fault, and his weakness too. But in this case, Martz publicly said it was his mistake. I'm sure he and Sing had an arrangement where Martz had control/responsiblity...I'm not 100% sold on the Sing experiment either, but I've come to realize that no quality experienced HC/OC/DC/etc will come to SF and coach for the Yorks, and Yorks won't shell out the $$$$$$$$ to attract High Profile guys either!
So, LOVE 'EM OR LEAVE 'EM.
We can't worry about what the Cards do...if Singletary puts together the kind of team I believe he's working toward, we'll be fine. Raye will compliment Coach well...we'll again be the power running team we were when Norv Turner was here. The difference is, our passing game will be much more mature, our receivers and QB's better. That's all that matters...that we become the best team we can, then let the fun begin.
I realize I am being somewhat relentlessly negative here (and that is unusual for me - I usually approach life in an upbeat manner). But....Listen, all you can ask of any coach (and not many live up to this standard) is that he maximizes the talent that he has. That he gets the most out of what he has - and this is using motivation, scheme, player selection, etc. And Mike Martz does that all the time. The 49ers were WINNING, with an ordinary QB and ordinary receivers. So, someone says the Cardinals personnel is more his style - DUH! And which coach wouldn't want that talent? Bill Walsh ALWAYS went for that type of talent. After the first SB win, he acquirred Renaldo Neamiah and Russ Francis looking for faster and bigger recievers (RIGHT aftr a SB win). After the next SB win, he drafted Jerry Rice in the first round. Next year he drafted John Taylor. ALWAYS looking for big, fast receivers. Frankly, I think Martz would be great for Arizona, especially if Warner leaves (which he won't) - he'd be great for Leinert. And yeah, that would be BAD for the 49ers - real bad. And Singletary would look real stupid. Carmen Policy always thought he was smarter than he really was. I'm hoping Sing is not in that category, but..... I'm already thinking ahead to the 2010 draft, with some great QBs available. If the 49ers offense turns out to be dull and predicatable next year, I'm hoping 49er fans will raise the same stink they did many years ago about Marc Trestman.
Matt, that reads just as daft as when you originally wrote it. You could say that the Cards had the worst regular season point differential of any team to make the playoffs and you'd be correct but to extrapolate that one statistic to conclude that they're the worst team defies any logic. And the results clearly prove you wrong.
Sorry guy!!! You're right and I agree with you most of the time!! Sorry again!!
Comment: You could say that the Cards had the worst regular season point differential of any team to make the playoffs and you'd be correct but to extrapolate that one statistic to conclude that they're the worst team defies any logic. And the results clearly prove you wrong.
My response: Win-loss record, total offense, total defense, point differential, strength of schedule, how the team ended the season . . . those are the things I considered in labeling the Cardinals the worst REGULAR SEASON team in the playoffs.
I appreciate your passion for the Cardinals, but I'd bet that even most Cardinals fans and impartial observers would agree that the Cardinals' regular-season performance was not exactly impressive when compared to the other playoff teams.
But the Cardinals played very well in the playoffs. They were among the top two teams in the playoffs. I picked them to win the Super Bowl. But my statement ended with the regular season, therefore I can't be "proved" wrong unless you can show me that there was another playoff team that has a less-impressive regular season.
Perhaps, you could say San Diego (8-8), but the Chargers faced a much-stronger schedule and they lost four games by a combined seven points. --Matt M.
Sorry! But I don't agree with your analysis of Sing! I also don't care about his tutorials or motivation! All I know is that when he took over as HC he had no problem sticking others out to dry! And he also deflected his mistakes or bad judgements on to others! You see, a good HC takes the heat no matter what!
I don't remember Bill Walsh or Vince Lombardi or ANY of the great and good HC's naming others as the problem! That's what's REAL tutorials and motivation! As for Martz, what could he say about mistakes that were made? He was stuck out to dry by Sing! As a former HC, Martz learned you don't HIDE or BLAME others for bad judgements! You take it on the chin because it's your team! So what was he to do? Get in a public fight with Sing? The press would have a heyday with that! Plus it would have destroyed any continuity on the team!
And I don't understand how Sing's backers want to give him ALL the credit for a couple wins over losses, but then BLAME mistakes, a loss and bad judgements on Martz or other coaches or players! I played for Don James and everything that went wrong during the game stayed within the team! He also NEVER stuck someone else out to dry!
Maybe Sing ought to learn some of things you say he wants to bring to the team before he plans to use them on the team!
1. Hilary Clinton got more total votes in the Democratic primaries than Obama therefore Obama was the most unpopular Presidential candidate ever.
2. Cardinals won their division so was a better team than wildcards Colts & Ravens.
3. Cardinals won more division games than any other NFC team so they were the best team in the NFC.
All examples of poor logic like your assertions. You are taking one or two specific truths and making a general argument. You say the Cardinals have a poor points differential, therefore are the worst team. What you say could be true but is not certain. Adding more specific truths helps but is not conclusive. However my response that the Cardinals beat three playoff teams on their way to the Superbowl removes that uncertainty and "proves" you wrong. They are clearly not the worst playoff team.
I appreciate your passion in defending your sloppy logic & substandard writing skills but I'd bet most impartial observers would agree with me that you showed a lack of football expertise in claiming the Cards to be the worst team in the playoffs.
See how offensive that statement was? Now go back and read your response to me.
I got a nice Warner jersey from sport-jerseys.biz.
