I was going to hold off on writing an NFL combine recap until Monday. But here I am, stuck for a while at Chicago's Midway. I see my flight has been delayed THREE hours. I'm not scheduled to arrive back in the Bay Area around 2 a.m., so thank goodness there's a Harry Caray's next to my gate.

On the first night I was in Indianapolis, I wanted to find a bar downtown that had ESPNU, so I could watch the Saint Mary's-San Diego basketball game. (Some of the other reporters were amused I made that a huge priority to my night's plans. Then, I flashed my Gaels season-ticket holder card and they understood.)

I watched the first half of the game intently. Then, many of the scouts, coaches and executives who were taking part in player interviews that evening began flooding into the joint. I barely watched two minutes of the second half, as my focus shifted back to football.

With :23 remaining and the Gaels up by three points, the TVs were shut off. It was time to go back to the hotel. I wasn't pleased with the timing, but I had found my hangout for the next two evenings.

Here's some of the buzz gathered from around town  . . .

--The first thing you need to know about the NFL combine: The reporters who "cover" this event know far less about what's going on at the workouts than the people watching it on TV. So, please, fill me in on everything I missed. For instance, I agree with Drew's observation about Boise's Ian Johnson. His 40 time was a pleasant surprise. He helped himself immensely.

--My guy, Fresno QB Tom Brandstater, was very, very impressive. But one keen observer told me that I shouldn't have been surprised. Brandstater has all the tools, but he does not always carry over that physical talent into games.

--Texas Tech's Graham Harrell was not impressive at the Senior Bowl, and he was extremely shaky today, too. Wonder if he'll even get drafted.

--It was scary to see Missouri WR Jeremy Maclin go down in a heap when his foot caught in the turf while trying to adjust on a poorly thrown pass from QB Jason Boltus of Hardwick. But 10 minutes later he ran a slant-and-go route, though he was hobbling noticeable. A night or two earlier, one NFL type suggested Maclin's build might lead to durability concerns.

--I wrote recently that I didn't think the 49ers were viewing Dashon Goldson as a starter at free safety. Now, I think I was dead wrong on that one. I have every reason to believe GM Scot McCloughan was subtly referring to Goldson when he talked about there being a very good chance the starting free safety is currently on the team. The 49ers might look at adding safety, but I don't think they'll go after Tampa's Jermaine Phillips or Cleveland's Sean Jones.

--The price of tackles is going through the roof with Vernon Carey getting a deal averaging $7 million annually from the Dolphins. While the 49ers might be interested in a tackle, such as Pittsburgh's Marvel Smith or Jacksonville's Khalif Barnes, I don't know if they have the stomach to remain in the picture if the price starts escalating - and I suspect it will.

--Mostly did the chain thing for dinners in Indy, but went back to Iaria's - a classic old-school Italian place I frequent every time I'm in town. It did not disappoint.

--Punter Andy Lee has outkicked his coverage. The Raiders' Shane Lechler signed a deal last week that averages $4 million a season. In March 2007, the 49ers matched the Steelers offer sheet on Lee that pays him $1.183 million a year. Now, Lee's representation wants a new deal from the 49ers. And the 49ers never even negotiated the deal in the first place - the Steelers did.

--Everybody has an opinion about Mike Martz - good or bad. And I heard plenty of both this weekend. I will say this, the people who know him very well and have coached with him absolutely swear by the man. Heck, Bill Belichick had some very kind words for him earlier today. Belichick had this to say about Martz and Jim Haslett: "As a coach, it's a little bit of an empty feeling to see people like that not in the game. Much as I don't want to compete against them, they deserve to be at this level. They're great coaches. Mike Martz has had a tremendous offensive career. So has Jim on the defensive side of the ball as well as being a head coach. Maybe you have to ask the people who are doing the hiring." I agree that the NFL isn't quite as fun without Martz involved in some capacity.

--The 49ers are in need of a fullback. Might they go after Seattle's Leonard Weaver? He's young and has many good years ahead of him. Those in the know say Weaver does not fit what Jimmy Raye and Mike Singletary (or is it Mike Singletary and Jimmy Raye?) want to do with the offense. Weaver would've been a better fit for Martz's scheme. The 49ers this offseason will be looking for a thumper - you know, somebody like that guy they had in 2007 when Frank Gore rushed for nearly 1,700 yards. What was that guy's name? Oh, yeah, Moran Norris.

--DeShaun Foster and Bryant Johnson will not be back with the 49ers.

--Ronald Fields might get some action on the free-agent market because of the dearth of nose tackles (not named Albert Haynesworth) who are available.

--Who do the Raiders take at No. 7? It's a pick that could impact the 49ers. More than one person's opinion: Al Davis likes speed-burners at wideout, so he might not be smitten with Michael Crabtree. And does Al Davis really care that Alabama tackle Andre Smith left the combine unannounced? Probably not.

--Reading between the lines in speaking with Singletary, it does not sound as if the 49ers have any intention on signing a free agent to compete with Shaun Hill and Alex Smith for the starting QB job. Also, taking a quarterback with the No. 10 overall pick seems to be out of the question. Why? The 49ers will take the highest-rated player on their draft board at No. 10. And that player is (probably) not going to be a quarterback.

--Offensive tackle at No. 10? Perhaps. I know he is not considered one of the top three, but Michael Oher deserves to be mentioned in that sentence. He is an impressive athlete. If you haven't read Michael Lewis' book, "The Blind Side: The Evolution of a Game," do yourself a favor. The question being asked is if Oher has been spoiled the past six years after a tremendously difficult upbringing.

--As a reference point . . .

a report is when reliable source(s) are cited in a news story;

a rumor is when something is heard, usually second or third hand. There might be a truth to it, but a reporter would never stake his reputation on it;

speculation is when nobody has said a word but somebody takes a guess.

--Report: A couple weeks ago, I filed an article that Jonas Jennings is expected to be released this offseason.

--Rumor: The 49ers offered the O.C. job to Scott Linehan, Dan Reeves and Rob Chudzinkski before Singletary found the mutual union with Raye. (By the way, I loved my one-on-one chat with Mr. Raye. He is a fascinating man. I'll be writing more about his background in the near future.)

--Any time you've read that the 49ers may have interest in Michael Vick, it has been speculation. Am I partly responsible? Yes. I wrote in Tuesday's paper that Singletary declined to rule out the possibility of Vick joining the team. However, when I contacted the organization the next day, the club's official stance is there is ZERO interest.

--Sleeper pick at No. 10 - and this is just a guess (speculation) - USC linebacker Rey Maualuga. OK, this goes against my personal theory, but - believe it or not -- the 49ers do not share my opinion of inside linebackers. I think if you have a guy like Patrick Willis, you just get a dirty-work guy next to him. But the 49ers loved Jerrod Mayo last year, and they never found that long-term answer at the "ted" position. Maualuga has an incredibly high football IQ - he took it upon himself to soak in all of Pete Carroll's coaching. Plus, I'm partial to Maualuga because he played high-school ball for one of the most memorable coaches I've ever covered: Eureka High's Jack Lakin. Ah, those were the days.

--Well, I'm getting kicked out of Harry Caray's. (Unless I start trying to pronounce names spelled backward.) Maybe I'll go join Facebook, like my brother has been lobbying me to do for the past month.

--I'm hoping to be in my own bed in seven hours.

--Tune in to the KNBR Morning Show with Murph and Mac on Monday at 8 a.m. I'll be rested and ready to entertain.

Hey Matt -layovers are a drag... atleast you found a bar -Nfl Network is a good tool but they could improve- coverage is spotty at times -graphics are not always displayed on each player etc. given that- stand outs that got coverage :Donald Brown RB ;Brian Robiskie WR ;Kenny Britt WR;James Casey TE;Ian Johnson has been mentioned -I thought John Parker Wilson looked impressive at QB -disappointed not to see much of my guy Mike Reilly what i did see looked decent!

Too bad about the flight delay, but your latest entry was extremely interesting and insightful. There seems to be a lot of misinformation out there and you cleared a lot of that up.
Seems like no one really has a good idea of who the 49ers are supposed to draft. I'm just hoping it's not another Kentwan Balmer.

Matt – nice work today. Based on the NFL Network tape and Mooch waxing poetic, Sanchez appeared to have a solid combine. Didn't do anything to hurt his standing. What were your impressions of Sanchez in person?

Btw... Stafford does all the workouts except throwing the pill? Why bother to show up then? Is it just me, or does Stafford have an uncanny resemblance to Master Blaster from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

Please god I hope your wrong about us getting Ray Maualuga after watching the Senior Bowl practices and seeing him get handled by TE's I would hat to get him. Stick with Raji or Orakapo.

So Dashon Goldson as our starting FS is report, rumor, or speculation?

Matt, sorry to hear about the delay and thanks for the mention. Great stuff as always. In addition to Ian Johnson I thought Robiske at WR and Pat White at QB were the biggest surprises today. Not much of a scoop but I liked what I saw of Jason Smith and Monroe at the OT yesterday.

Btw, I'm an LMU Lion but I must admit that I was sick when Patty Mills went down as his shorts got pulled in Spokane. I hope he comes back strong during the WCC tourney and SMC gets an NCAA bid. I think SMC's win Saturday in the Bracketbuster without Mills was very big if SMC fails to win the WCC tourney. And, as a WCC segway, do you know if the Niners had any interest in Josh Johnson last year? I still like him better than any developmental qb in this year's draft and I wonder if he could be had from the new TB administration for a 4th round pick and if the Niners would do it?

Travel safe.

forget facebook ... it's boring , try myspace , you can have awesome 49ers layouts for your profile page !!! if you need help , i'll hook you up !!! oh, and thanks for the inside info !!!!!

I think the talk about Maclin's body type should be labeled as speculation. He is about 6'0 and 200lbs, which is comparable to Torry Holt and Tim Brown. If he is wiry at that height and weight he must be built like a greyhound. I can't think of two receivers more wiry than Marvin Harrison and Isaac Bruce and both players have held up well over the years.

Stupid Raiders!

This article by Jason Cole saw the ripple effect of the Asomugha/Lechler deals:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/around_the_nfl/post/Execs-taken-aback-by-Asomugha-Lechler-deals?urn=nfl,142741

Yeah, the older Al gets, the worse his decisions are. Now Andy Lee wants to get paid. I like Andy, but if he expects that type of money that Lechler got, I say let him go. A punter is not worth it.

Matt, if we don't go after Phillips, Jones, or Barnes what are we going to do with 30+ mill in cap space?

I was actually pulling for Graham Harrell...but we'll see now.

We also need to extend contracts on our own guys... Willis, Spikes, Baas, etc.

I admit I'm slightly ignorant when it comes to the draft and free agency, but I'm just not that excited about either.

We have 30Million in cap space and there doesn't seem to be anyone out there worth spending it on (Suggs & Peppers are gone). We have the 10 spot in the draft, but the top OTs probably wont fall that far and I'm not sold on any of the DE's.

Maybe I'm a little jaded because I've watched six years of high draft picks and "big name" free agents have zero impact on our team (in terms of record)

$7M per for Barnes and Smith? Yuck. Barnes might be a decent play at RT but I'm not sure if he's a true power guy. If it keeps Staley at LT, this could be something the 49ers could do.

I don't think Maualuga lasts to 10. Del Rio had a man crush at the Senior Bowl and their both USC guys. If he does well tomorrow, it would make it more certain. A LT at 8 would be tempting though.

Matt,

If you're right, and the Niners would not consider Maclin at 10, that really ticks me off. They say they're going to pick the best player available at that spot. That means not considering the most dynamic WR in the draft because he doesn't fit their need for a strong blocker? I understand that blocking is important, and a very underrated skill for a WR. But at WR you need PLAYMAKERS, first and foremost. DeSean Jackson helped Philly out big last year, and I don't think it was because of his blocking. If Crabtree is gone, Maclin would be the best talent available, he fills a position of need, and he would bring a dimension that we have lacked ever since T Owens left.

Rey Maualuga is overated in my opinion and i would be very upset if we drafted him at #10

Maualuga's a beast...but, I'm not sure we need him...at least not as much as a pass rusher. So, I'll be surprised if we don't take the best on on the board. I wouldn't be upset w/Oher at #10, though. He didn't have the greatest combine, but when I've seen him play, he's been outstanding. If we take him, then the only question is who plays LT, him or Staley. Nice problem to have. I like Maclin's speed...but I'm not sure if he's that good of a route runner. That's one thing that impressed me about Desean Jackson...he's got the speed, but runs pretty good routes, too.

The thing we are missing, and have been missing for quite a long time is our edge rusher. Haralson is average to below average, Lawson will never be a beast, but may grow to average if we'ew lucky. Franklin is serviceable at NT. If there is a position of need and BPA at 10, OLB (3-4) is it. Willis would actually be better with an OLB to team with, rather than another "playmaker" at TED. Spikes did a good job last year. Drafting an ILB is a shouyld be a low priority over NT or edge. I am OK with drafting a TED, but at #10 it's a reach. Interesting article on NFL.com, nothing we didn't already know, but...

http://www.nfl.com/combine/story?id=09000d5d80eddc94&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true

Oakland-Niner makes a great point. Why spend TENS of MILLIONS of dollars on guys that, essentially, have no impact on your record???? When we went for big time guys in the past, like Fred Dean and Deion Sanders, they pushed us to the Super Bowl with their greatness. Might as well just go for depth at OL and CB positions and save the really big bucks that we will need to re-sign Patrick Willis and our own offensive linemen. And draft two or three pass rushers to get one that REALLY pans out. And......conisder Samchez if he falls to #10.

For anyone who hasn't read "The Blind Side", my wife picked up my copy this weekend (not a football fan), and has almost finished it. Its a great book, even outside with the immediate football connection. And, yes, if Oher is available at #10, we should take him.

what happened to direct flights?

"DeShaun Foster and Bryant Johnson will not be back with the 49ers."

WHAT?!!!! Please tell me the part about Bryant Johnson is... like a typo or something! Why would they let that guy go? What is his agent asking for, anyway?

Matt: "The 49ers might look at adding safety ..."

Might? We only have three safeties. Adding at least a backup strong safety is mandatory.

PLease don't start the trade/sign Marvin Harrison talk. Morgan and Hill are fine and we should add a player with a future ahead of him.

You forget that in the 2008 draft the Eagles passed on DeSean Jackson, twice!!

and aside from QB there is no more risky pick early in the draft than WR.

WOW - Orakapo just ran an unofficial 4.6 at the combine. He weighted in at 263 and was 6-3, he benched the 225 31 times. Those are all off the charts numbers for a man of his size. By comparison, Everett Brown measured 6 feet and that will worry a lot of scouts/teams with that height. Maybin tried to put on weight, he played at 230 last year (That’s why I say he is a clone of Manny Lawsome/Julian Peterson), and weighed in at the Combine at 249. Today he ran a very pedestrian 4.78 40 for a speed rusher. That means he cannot and should not carry that extra weight. Therefore, Orakapo MUST be our pick if he is there at #10. Mayock is calling him this years Demarcus Ware. My concern with his blazing 4.6 with that size is that he will be LONG GONE by our pick at #10.

Orakapo is a beast, but he is know to be a measurables/workout kind of guy (not that he isn't a player), that should be taken with a grain of salt. Orakapo would be a great pick at 10 and I hope we get him, rather than Andre "Bubba" Smith. He should be there. He is maybe the second 'backer chosen. Curry is the best LB out there, and should be picked before 10. If Curry is there, let's take him. There are only so many slots above us. Figure that the top QB, Curry, 2, maybe 3 OT's. the top CB, Crabtree(?) are all gone. Orakapo may be sitting pretty at 10

Matt-Layovers and delays......my middle name. Connecting through Chicago is typically a nightmare. Continental typically has the best direct flights from SF to the East. Stay away from US Air.....what a disaster. When going through Chicago go...O'Hare...more flight options. Better food/bars too. Better looking stews as well.

I hope so. Mike Mayock, who I have a lot of respect for as a talent evaluator, has rated Orakapo the #5 overall prospect in the entire 2009 draft just behind Curry, and that was before today's numbers. Mayock puts all of his stock on game tape, and not measurables and workout wonders. NOw, with this 4.6 in the 40, 31 reps on the bench, and a near 40 inch vertical with a 6-3, 265 pound frame should cement that status. We need this pass rushing beast. Image what the extra attention would do for J Smith, Haralson, Willis and others?

Rey Maualuga may be a hard hitting talented LB but he is not going to be a 3 down LB in the NFL and it would be absolutely foolish to pick a 2 down guy with the #10 pick. Mayo is an entirely different player. Really liked Robiskie would love to get him later in the draft. I wanted to see Orakpo workout but he tweaked his hamstring. Raji is a beast and so is Curry. It will be interesting to see what happens with the top 2 QB's, I could see both drafted in the top 10 and both fall out of the top 10 entirely.

I LOVED to see what Bill Belichick said about Mike Martz. Belichick is a HC that is a proven winner and one of the most experienced in the game today. Although Martz is not my favorite coach, I believe he got a raw deal with the 49ers and especially with "don't point the finger at me" Sing. No matter what, he took an offense that was miserable for the last 5 or 6 years, and had 4 OC's during that time period, and made it interesting. Anyone with an IQ over 30 knows Mr. Sing, being the paranoid coach he is, couldn't exist with Martz or anyone else he felt was breathing down his back.
I admit that Martz has flaws in the offensive package he brings to the game But by his presence with the 9ers last year he exposed flaws in the inexperienced Mr. Sing.
For people of Skeebers IQ of 30, read the words of Belichick that Matt wrote: "Much as I don't want to compete against them (Martz and Haslett,) they deserve to be at this level. They're great coaches. Mike Martz has had a tremendous offensive career. So has Jim on the defensive side of the ball as well as being a head coach. Maybe you have to ask the people who are doing the hiring." I agree that the NFL isn't quite as fun without Martz involved in some capacity."
The Martz Belichick mentioned spoke of was used as Mr. Sing's fall guy because the newly named HC wanted, not only to keep the heat off himself, but with his HUGE EGO wanted to destroy Martz. Because Mr. Sing wanted to drive Martz off the team so NO competition, like there was really any, could occur for the HC position! Just look back how DC Manusky was treated and spoken about by the HC! He was always the "learning" guy, "the new coordinator" that was learning what Mr. Sing wanted and needed from his DC!
Marts was the guy that was "confused." Not Sing of course! Martz had "trouble getting the play to the QB!" Martz "lost track of the time clock." Martz, Martz, Martz!
I don't believe the 49ers had any intention of hiring Martz as HC. He took the chance of placing a not ready QB JTO in the game. He at times made the QB a sitting duck. His offensive scheme also takes a lot more time than the 49ers had to put it in place! Face it, Martz was brought to the team as an in between while the team figured out where it really wanted to go.
But NO Assistant coach should be allowed to be used as a lightening rod to take the heat off the HC! I thought the Raiders were the only ones who pulled that stunt!
Inexperience is a given with Mr. Sing. But an overly large ego, a belief that shaming anyone but himself attitude, and a mouth that can't keep itself shut when it speaks for itself and not in coordination with the other 2 guys above him in the front office, will give the 49ers plenty of publicity in the coming year. And most of that publicity will be unwanted! And it will make Mr. Sing pulling his pants down in the locker room at halftime seem like a walk in the park!

I just watched Orkapo run...he really needs to work on his hip flexor/hammy flexability. He runs with such tightness (he's too muscle-bound) at this point...that he'll be prone to tweeks. As long as his draft status drops, great. I can't wait to draft him.

Matt, I went to Eureka High from 1991-1995, but I didn't play football or have Jack Lakin as one of my teachers.

Just curious, what made Lakin one of your favorites? I just remember his "fly offense" and how he would wear cowboy boots while coaching the EHS basketball team.

So why do you suppose Bill Belichick hasn't hired Mike Martz yet? I think it is because "fun" doesn't win championships. He is going to miss getting several sacks and turnovers against Martz offenses. By the way, I think Singletary is great, and I can't wait to see what he can do. Sorry I'm not all doom and gloom, and the worlds going to end and global warming and stuff.

Matt, I hope you are right about Goldson. I have always thought they needed to get him on the field. He has really good range. Like others under Nolan such as Rachal, Baas and Jason Hill, he was not given a shot because Nolan said Roman was a smart player. Just not smart enough to make up for his lack of talent apparently. I see a lot of people talking about pass rusher with first pick, I was kind of hoping we would address offensive tackle and go pass rusher 2nd and running back 3rd. I attended state of franchise and heard Singletary make it very clear that he wants a fullback who when he is in the hole can blow up defenders, and Leonard Weaver is not that guy I dont think. I wonder about Devery Henderson in FA. I here he is a vertical guy.

Matt, I thought Brian Robiskie did fantastic. How do you think he did and do you think he will be looked at and possibly picked by the Niners in the 2nd round?

My two cents, but I would be very surprised if he is around by our Round 2 pick. He is the real deal and is as polished as they come (thanks to his Dad). That good 40 time pushed him into the first round. He will be the 3rd receiver off the board in the mid/late first round.

As I posted yesterday in another thread...

I want pass rush and more pass rush in the draft . Then in later rounds a QB that will sit for a year or so behind Hill.

I also think that Goldson should start unless the coaches know something we don't know ,like he is too stupid to make the calls (in that case let the SS make the calls ). As long as he can finally stay healthy Goldson should be the guy at FS.

And Terry,I know you are just getting some laughs from posting such outragous nonsense and then sitting back and laughing as others respond to you BUT I have to tell you as someone who has been reading this forum for quite a while (but have not posted before) that nobody is laughing with you but are laughing at you. You sound like a fairly intelligent guy and if you stop goofing around and start posting serious comments instead of trying to be annoying you might actually contribute something good to the forum instead of being as annoying as a mosquito. jmho
-------------------------------------------

And Matt, Since we all know that Singletary has a earned reputation for good character and unquestioned integrity in his life by all those who have known him ,shouldn't we accept the fact (not a rumor but from Sing's own lips)that he said he never officially offered the job of OC to any of the candidates until he finally hired Raye, who was willing to meet Singletary's strict requirments ? Some fans were shocked that Raye was hired but Singletary and Raye both have stated that Sing contacted Raye immediately after the regular season was done. Raye was on Sing's short list from day one ! If we had known that fact we might not have been so surprised when he was hired over other candidates (like Linehan)who would not or could not comply with Sing's strict requirments (as Raye agreed to do )?

I'm glad you took the time and tried to understand what I wrote in my comment, but you failed. But worse, you make insinuations about me, and about what others are doing with or did you say, at me! This is no concern to me because their is something called "difference of opinion" in the comment area of Matt's Blog. I also, in case you read the Quick Notes on my comment and missed it, addressed something Matt actually wrote about. If you go back and read Matt's words, he quoted a VERY SUCCESSFUL HC in the NFL and what he thought about Mike Martz and the possibility of him not being in the NFL.
I then went back and looked up the quotes made by your idol HC and placed them in my comments. Now as some like yourself who comment here and kneel at the altar of this guy, Mr. Sing, they look and hear what they want and hate any negative shown in their god. Because I concluded that your god used coach Martz as a lightning rod, stabbed him in the back because of ego and made sure he was destroyed in what the god thought was a HC battle, and finally but most important proved he is unable to take the HEAT when it comes his way!
As for goofing around, I think your phony description of a HC with an ego problem has given others and myself a great example of what a comic page should contain to lift the spirits of people who need a quick pickup in the morning!
Others and I are now laughing at your great attempt at a comic page!

And writing a fabricated story of how your god hired Raye is an outstanding piece comedy. If your facts are in any way true, and there not, it seems your god is showing how he can't admit failure, again! It's better to put a spin on the Raye hiring to make himself look good and experienced. But it's nothing different than what this guy did last year.
If he could take the HEAT, he'd admit that Linehan WAS offered the job, refused, and chose Detroit over the beautiful SF area, rather than deal with an egomaniac HC whose idea of offense pre dates the pass!
If he could take the HEAT, he'd say Raye was the only one left at the bottom of the garbage can!
But if your scenario has a pin prick of truth, Mr. Sing still can't take the HEAT!

Terry, There you go again. Get serious will you ?
First of all I never said that I was sure that Sing would be a great or evn a good HC. All I said was he is recognized by all who know him as being a man of great character and integrity. I also know that the players respect him and listen to him (they better !). I am hopeful about Sing and the way he will run the team BUT I do not worship at his alter at all,I am just being realistic and fair and not hateful, like you .
My advice to you still stands but of course it was just advice and you will do what you want. I just hoped to be a friend and advise you to try to moderate your hatful sounding comments about the HC and others and try to at least sound as if you are a reasonable guy. People tend to be swayed by a reasonable guy with a reasonable opinion and tend to tune out someone who sounds like he is hateful and closed minded.
jmho

And Terry, since I did not mention God at all in my comments above and you once again did make your hateful comments about even God (not to mention Sing and EVERYONE else ,etc etc ) I am forced by you to believe that you are simply a conduit of hate and not of reasonable thought . If I read some thoughtful comments from you in the future then I will of course adjust my opinion (an opinion that anyone who reads your hatefull stuff MUST come to,how sad). I am FORCED to now be pretty sure that you are not serious and are just trying to be a shock poster so you can get your jollies.
I am now looking for the block feature on the site so I can just skip your stuff. (I know this will make you cry ,lol ).

Terry wrote "and finally but most important proved he is unable to take the HEAT when it comes his way". I going to guess you don't know Mike Singletary very well. Secondly, the Pats had an opening at their OC position after Josh left for Denver. Why didn't he even interview Martz? Why has Mike Martz not received one single interview for an OC/HC or any other NFL position for that matter? You clearly know more than me..... so enlighten us all. Martz and Coach Sing were not a good fit – get over it. For the Record: Mike Martz offense was ranked 23rd in the NFL and averaged 311 yards a game. In 2006, with LESS TALENT, Norv’s team averaged 304 yards per game and was ranked 26th. Martz team was backed by the 13th best Defense. Norv’s team was backed by the number 26th defense in the NFL. If you ask me, Norv did better with MUCH less to work with.

I think, or maybe I should look it up, but Mike Martz was part of the coaching staff when the Rams won a SB! Then I'll look it up and see if he was HC when the Rams went back to the SB! Wait! YEP! HE WAS! And hand picked by Vermeil who, by the way, was best friends with Bill Walsh!
And I wonder why Belichick would say he wouldn't want to face Martz? That they (including Martz) was a "GREAT Coach(es)."
Maybe Belichick has his own system in place (a winning system?) So why would he want one different than his own? If the late Bill Walsh was available, Belichick would stick with his own system, even as great as Walsh was!
So go back and come up with a different script "fan?"

I know Mr. Sing as a coach just by what he says, or doesn't say, and what he does and did when the HEAT came his way! So go back to the Sing club and pull your pants down with the reat of your cronies!

Look up the difference between the words "god" and "God" my boy! There's a real defference in meaning!I'd explain it to you but I think looking up the meaning of words would be good for you!

I'm sorry bro. Everything is going to be OK. Just try and relax. Take some deep breaths. Try yoga. You are wound up very tight. That can lead to health problems. Life is good my friend. Let's all just calm down. It is the off season. You never know what can happen in the NFL. I am curious if we'll ever see anything even close to positive under your name. I would like to see it, even if it was fake. That would be very interesting. TOP_CAT, let me know if you find that block feature. Terry, I'm sorry, I'll try not to read your comments anymore. WOW.

Oh, one more thing, I do agree that the league in general is more fun with Martz in it. Just not with the Niners.

Hey, Terry and Top_Cat --- COOL IT!! Or get each other's contact information and carry on your childish stuff privately. You are diminishing the value of an otherwise excellent blog.

I agree. I will knock it off myself. It just can get wierd sometimes. That'll be all.

Trolling Terry is what he is: A classic troll.
Don't let him take over Matt's blog. Confine TT in the Cohn Zohn. LOL

Sorry Jerry, you are right. I should have contacted Terry by e-mail or pm or something to try to give him advice on how to possibly rehabilitate his reputation around here. I am new to the site and must apologize for not knowing that.
But now that I know Terry a bit better I think I won't bang my head up against that wall but will just ignore his posts and enjoy the rest of the site . Maybe if we all just ignore him he will get tired of playing his childish hate games (with himself).

Now back to what we are here for...

Nice report on Murph and Mac this morning Matt ! Do you ever sleep ?

Hey!! What is this...I had know idea that Joe's offspring were such studs. I thought the wife was gonna put the whammy to any football playing children.
So who knows more about Nick Montana? Anybody seen this kid play? Shoot I will go watch this kid next year!!

One other thing...
Is there a worst NFL reporter than Peter King? I just can't stand reading this guy...I devour everything pigskin...NFL..
However everytime I start to read this guy I just wanna hurl!!
Is it just me not liking his writing style or am I just as bad for bringing this up. There is just something about this guy that makes me wanna start breaking funinture!

I have been trying Googles Chrome browser..I am sorry about the dbl posts. I don't know why it does it..

If Belichick is so in love with Martz, why doesn't he bring him on staff with the Pats?

An example of TERRY'S complete INSANITY. The other day, he posed this question:

But for you Sing lovers I have a question? What QB has Mr. Sing been involved with that attained a successful career in college or the NFL?

When I mentioned Jim McMahon, he responded with "I didn't know Singletary was McMahon's QB coach at BYU or his QB coach or OC with the Bears. He then went out of his way to remind me that MS played LB with the Bears.

Then why ask the question, you moron? We ALL know that MS was a defensive player and player and coach. Why ask the question if all you're going to come back with is an IDIOTIC response saying that "MS isn't a QB coach or an OC."

WOW! Now that's some logical thinking!

BTW: Were you dropped on your head when you were a little kid?

Here's a new thing I'm going to try:

Next time somebody bashes somebody else in the comments section, I'm going to send email addresses to each other so you can carry on your little dialogue in private without having it annoy everybody else who gets on the blog.

Fair enough?

--Matt M.

Fair enough Matt. That said, the guy posed a question, I answered it, and he comes back with "MS isn't a QB coach or OC."

Excuse me, but isn't that common knowledge? Shouldn't there be a certain level of basic intelligence in a post?

Don't ask a question if you are going to reply a factual answer with complete nonsense!

Matt put something fresh up will ya.
What do you know about Nick Montana? From what I read this kid has "skills"...

Ahem. Matt, what's your best guess about whether the Niners might move Walt Harris to FS?

Matt, good work as always my man -
Happy Belated B'Day to Lucy as well -
My take on the Combine to this point -
QBs - John Parker Wilson and Mike Reilly
WRs - Heyward-Bey and Mike Wallace
OL - Lydon Murtha Louis Vasquez
DL - Kyle Moore Terrance Taylor
LB - Clay Matthews Stanley Arnoux
All the guys above are first view guys for me and would look good playing in SF.
I saw Tom Rathman working with the RBs and have to think he's salivating over the crop he's got to choose from.
My guess is Fiammetta is a perfect fit at FB, Shonn Green could do well also IMO.
Thge DBs go Tuesday so I'm anxious to watch Darius Butler from UCONN, one huge attribute he has is leaping ability and was cocky enough on First Take the other day to tell Crawford he wants a shot at LFitz.
My kinda kid!

Thanks Matt BUT I for one don't want anything to do with getting Terry's e-mail address . I feel like I might get a virus just reading his hateful stuff ,lol I will just skip his rants from now on . Sorry if I contributed to any degrading of your great site.

Matt. As I asked before, don't you ever sleep. You were just home from the airport and then had to get up to be on the Murph and Mac show early am (nice job by the way) and then here you are again on your blog trying to police the mob,lol .
Thanks Matt !

Hey Marc- NJ49er-wondering when you would chime in...glad to see you noticed my guy Mike Reilly!(I thought John Parker Wilson looked sharp too as mentioned before!) Now if only Greg Micheli can get a tryout as UDFA-we are cookin at QB steal! (Rumor has it that Seattle is interested in Reilly by the by...I'm not surprised !)Lydon Murtha certainly caught my eye ...you mentioned Kenny Britt the other day and although he isn't tearing it up w/numbers something about that kid seems special- robiskie as well! What's your take at 10 slot now?-BUzz

Hey Buzz, I just hope we wait until late to spend a pick on a QB.
My preferred option right now is best OL/DE-OLB at 10.
We'll see how McSing plays it, but consider the fact that we could grab the top RB at 10 whether we need to or not.
It's almost a smokescreen pick for a team that covets a RB don't you think?
Philly? Trade down?
I say grab Orakpo/Everette or the top OT there.
If gone? HMMMMM?

As for Kenny Kenny Britt, he's a BIG target, works the middle and is very quick for a big man.
Granted he's a home town guy and all, but he's put up some rather imoressive numbers at Rutgers which featured Ray Rice pretty heavily for the past several years until his departure last year to Baltimore.
We'll see, I was also impressed with the WR from Ole Miss (?) Mike Wallace among others.
Heyward-Bey is lightning fast, Britt sneaky fast.
Are we anxious for the big guy or will Morgan safice?
I would be OK waiting on a WR, but if we want a big man, probably have to grab him at 43.
Unless of course the option to trade down presents itself.
For me, 3 Day 1 picks would be phenomenal, but talented guys are needed, so we must hit on 2.

zounds what the hell are the raiders doing giving a PUNTER 4 mil a year? I know having a good special teams can mean the winning edge, but dropping that kind of cash on a position that only comes out when your offense FAILS is a huge waste of cash. I wouldn't even spend that money on a place kicker and they actually score points! Andy is a pretty good kicker, but if he can't seriously think that he's going to get more money out of the niners. if he sticks around next year, all he's going to have to do is grab that snap and place it on the grass for nedney's PATs =D.

I hear you about QB late -Reilly will probably be there in 4th/5th and would be nice p/u ! The board is moving around so who knows-Orakpo/Everette would be strong! Oher could be there and might draw -and as you intimated spot 10 could be strong trade spot! I'm still pounding my drum for the kid from Mount Union -possibly the best small school QB ever (Greg Micheli!)- UDFA gold.

Hey Matt, do you see the 49ers trying to trade up to get maybe the top Tackle at 3 or 4 or something?

MM - Will you be stalking, I mean reporting from team HQ's this Friday?

Question: Hey Matt, do you see the 49ers trying to trade up to get maybe the top Tackle at 3 or 4 or something?

My response: No. I think the 49ers need all the picks they can get, so they can't be giving up the bounty it would take to trade up, especially at a position where there's some depth. --Matt M.

Question: Will you be stalking, I mean reporting from team HQ's this Friday?

My response: My work schedule is taking a backseat in importance this week. My beloved uncle, Bob Gutowsky, of Corte Madera, passed away yesterday morning at the age of 85. He suffered a stroke three weeks earlier.

I'll probably end up doing some work this week, but I'm not sure what the extent of it will be. I can't make any guarantees of a Free-agency Day 1 stakeout this year.

--Matt M.

Matt - Sad to hear the news about your Uncle. Family comes first. On a football note I heard that Kwame Harris was released by the Raiders today. Might the Niners look at him again since they are going to more of a run offense and he is a good blocker from the right side.

Sorry for your loss Matt. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

So sorry for your loss Matt. We'll miss your constant updates, but family understandably comes first.

MM- Please give my sincere condolences to you and your family.

Matt, I am sorry for your loss. Take care of your family. We'll be happy to hear from you whenever you get back.

Matt-I'm sure I speak for all us in sending my heart felt condolences-thanks for all you provide here.Take care of yourself and family we will be here when you get back!

"One other thing...
Is there a worst NFL reporter than Peter King? I just can't stand reading this guy..."

I hope Matt doesn't mind me posting this here...

Read this column. Drew does one every Monday and they are hilarious. I've never read an entire PK article and from Drew's breakdown, I can see why.

Thoughts and prayers

I'm sorry for your loss Matt. My prayers and thoughts go out to you and yours.

I'll give you something positive. I'll be commenting here daily as long as I can.

Matt...My family and I are praying for you and your whole family! I'm sure your Uncle was aware of ALL the good you've brought to people like me in your work. I, like many look forward to your work EVERYDAY!
I hope you can find Peace during this upsetting time! Family is the MOST important gift from God in our lives!
God Bless You!
And Thanks for your work!

Top Cat and I are free to disagree as far as I know! We both have a right! His opinion is important to him as mine is to me! If you don't like my opinions or disagreements go somewhere else or read on! I'm not always happy with yours, but you have the right to post whatever!

Quit crying! For God's sake! Matt just explained what he wants to do with bantering! OK? I'm going to give opinions and always want to read others! If Matt wants to give my Email address to others, fine! But the name of the game is that opinions are different at times! People get personal and that happens!
I don't think the 49ers made the right choice at HC! I don't like Singletary as a HC! My reasons for this are my own and are plainly seen in my comments! Nobody knows if I do or don't know him personally! That's my business!
Besides everybody should concentrate on Matt's column and Blog! I do!

i've said it before and ill say it again...the day that people leave comments that actually have to do with the blog posted will be one the best days ever for matt and many other viewers

Matt, I'm sorry for your loss. I will pray for your family. Thank you for your hard work.

Dude. Nobody's crying. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. That said, there should at least be some common sense, if not intelligence, behind them.

When you ask a question about what quality QB's MS has ever been associated with, and I answer Jim McMahon, it's pretty illogical to start saying that MS wasn't a QB coach or an OC.

We ALL knew that going in. Why ask the question then, if you can't respond to a legitimate answer in an intelligent manner?

Makes no sense.

Sorry to hear about your family's loss.

Thanks ShootME!!
That made my day!! I sure don't think Matt minds...at least i hope not.
So I am not the only one that thinks Peter King should have his face pushed inside out! Regarding the Drew article - The thing about coffee kills me, that is "text book Napoleon Hill" Manager Thanks him.PFFFFFFF..he thank you PK to make you small like you are.

@shootme I hate, hate, hate Peter King with more passion than pretty much anything else in my life so I am now YOUR biggest fan - KSK is brilliant!!!!! Many thanks.

Can't stand Dr Z either. Totally bogus phony. I guess he gets a free pass these days so I'd better leave it there.

Every Monday he breaks down the Monday Morning QB article... comedy gold. From that link, you can look back through his previous entries, they typically have me laughing hysterically.
