The spread offense, which has become so prevalent in the college ranks, is having quite an impact on the college game, too.

In today's paper I wrote about the obvious affect it's had on evaluating quarterbacks, "Spread quarterbacks hard to evaluate."

Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout.com was kind enough to compile a list of the quarterbacks he has rated with draftable grades. Then, he noted what offense those quarterbacks played in college. Only six of 17 played in pro-style offenses.

1, (First round) Matthew Stafford - Georgia - pro style
2, (First round) Mark Sanchez - USC - pro style
3, (Second round) Josh Freeman - Kansas State - 3-receiver spread, but often reg. snap
4, (Third round) Nate Davis - Ball State - spread
5, (Third round) Pat White - West Virginia - spread option
6, (Third/fourth round) Rhett Bomar - Sam Houston State - spread
7, (Fifth/sixth round) John Parker Wilson - Alabama - pro-style
8, (Fifth round) Stephen McGee - Texas A&M - read-option
9, (Fifth/sixth round) Graham Harrell - Texas Tech - spread
10, (Sixth round) Nathan Brown - Central Arkansas - spread
11, (Sixth/seventh round) Hunter Cantwell - Louisville - spread
12, (Sixth/seventh round) Tom Brandstater - Fresno State - pro-style with some spread elements
13, (Seventh round) Curtis Painter - Purdue - spread
14, (Seventh round/FA) Brian Hoyer - Michigan State - pro-style
15, (Seventh round/FA) Cullen Harper - Clemson - pro-style
16, (Seventh round/FA) Mike Reilly - Central Washington - spread
17, (Seventh round/FA) Rudy Carpenter - Arizona State - spread

The spread has also changed the way defenses play, too. That is good news for a 3-4 team, such as the 49ers. This season, there is good depth in the draft at outside linebackers who rush the passer out of a 3-4.

"What you're seeing now with the spread offenses is a lot of undersized defensive ends," 49ers GM Scot McCloughan said. "The defenses are adjusting now and saying, 'We don't need the big run stopper on the field or the big pass rusher; we need the undersized guy and more speed on the field because it's all misdirection.' The best thing to do in the spread offense is get the quarterback. You'll see the 220- to 240-pound defensive ends who are really good football players playing with their hand down. The bigger bodies don't get on the field."

McCloughan said that is one of the primary reasons that it is a down year for defensive linemen in this year's draft.

Today is my final day in Indianapolis. After today, the media will leave town, as availability to the players is shut down. I'll be on a 6:20 p.m. flight.

Singletary said they needed a safety with more range and McCloughan said FS was a FA target, but now says that person is already on the roster. The only thing I noticed changing is signing Jimmy Williams. Are the Niners that high on this guy?

With our experience with ASmith, I would be VERY careful about drafting a spread QB. Not that one can't make the transition, but it should be a big consideration, unless we start running a spread offense too (we won't). Great info Matt

I think if we cannot get E. Brown, Orakpo, Andre Smith or Jenkins on the 10th pick we should trade down if possible.
Then try to get Larry English or Clint Sintim later in the first round and go for a RT on the 2nd round like Alex Boone or massive Phil Loadholt.
I like big RB Arian Foster later on the 4th or 5th round together with FB Quinn Johnson.
As far as QB anyone in the 4th to 6th round could be developed in the same way I believe, this is a very compact group of QBs after the 3rd-4th round, all of them being from spread offense.

At least 1 if not 2 of those guys will be available at 10. Here's the rub...Do you take an elite OT at 10 (I bet it's gonna be Andre Smith with his combine antics and the slide) and switch Staley to RT, or do you go with a OLB/NT at 10 and draft a RT in round 3/4. I am now leery of OT's with weight issues and spread QB's

Hey Matt, any likes/dislikes among the mid-to-low-round QBs? I like McGee and Cantwell: motivated, hard-working types who have the potential to improve and develop into solid NFL QBs (not merely journeymen). Both were impressive during the East-West Shrine week, in terms of self-improvement and performance. McGee in particular seems like a perfect QB for a ball-control offense; he's accurate, makes good decisions and is a tough SOB. Cantwell has a better arm but I'm a bit wary about his ever-changing mechanics. I dislike Nate Davis: impressive arm strength but inconsistent accuracy and seems to lack NFL-level motivation and work ethic.

Matt –

Are the quebees supposed to be working out today? I expect a full Sanchez report on my desktop by 2pm PST.

I agree. I am concerned about drafting Andre Smith. Here is a guy with lots of physical gifts but: (1) he gets in trouble with agents before his bowl game severly costing his team; (2) he doesn't continue to work out to be ready for the combine; (3) he looks fat and out of shape; and, (4) he takes off without telling anybody. These are not good traits. Why wasn't he ready. The answer - NO SELF DISCIPLINE. Just what you want to avoid - a big, lazy, undisciplined player who wants big money. NO WAY.

I'd like to see the Niners trade with Tampa Bay to obtain Josh Johnson. Give Tampa back the late round draft pick they used last year. Tampa has signed Luke McKown so he is there future. I liked Johnson last year and better than anybody on the board this year as a developmental quarterback.

I'd take E. Brown or Orakpo with the first pick or look to trade down.

If it is Andre Smith, he should be RT, but I agree with you, for a RT we can go to the round 3 or 4 and still get what we want.
That is why I say we should try to move down and get additional picks on the 2nd and 3rd rounds.
Even for OLB/DE we could get great value late in the 1st or in the 2nd (Larry English, Clint Sintim).
I think Staley should stay on LT now after 2-3 years in the league he's got the experience to protect it there and he is very athletic.
During 2nd and 3rd rounds we can get good OLB, DE, DT and even FS, don't you think?

Missouri QB Chase Daniel is not on the list. Does that mean he considers him un-draftable? Or just that he didn't give him a rating?

Question: Missouri QB Chase Daniel is not on the list. Does that mean he considers him un-draftable? Or just that he didn't give him a rating?

My response: Rang has Daniel as the 21st-rated QB, and not getting drafted. --Matt M.

While I think that there is good value and we can get more players by trading back, teams will be more dollar cautious in this economy - finding a trading partner will be more difficult. I agree that if it is there, we can try to move back, but if there is a special player out there high on the board, we should stay at 10 and pick him.

At the time they probably had their sights on Atogwe, at least until he got franchised. Maybe they figure the rest available out there aren't any better than what's on our roster already?

If Goldson can finally stay healthy, I would expect him to take over. He's been a ball hawk in TC and needs to bring that over to the regular season.

Chase Daniel is as good as any other QB listed there after the 4th round and I dont think we should trade any QB before the 4th round. We have other needs and Shaun Hill played very well last season.
If we are building for the future, Chase Daniel has all the intangibles, leadership, movility, accuracy even he doesn't have the greatest arm.

Hey Skeebers? You're finally getting it! Your Mr. Sing has as much say in what direction the 49ers are headed as the water boy! McC is going to do the drafting AND the FA for the team, not your buddy! And Raye? Well, lets just say he's going to be everybody's fall guy next year, including Mr. Sing's! Just like Martz was last year!
McC's on the line next year! And he know's it! Mr. Sing is going to pop under the pressure next year because McC is going to DEMAND of him production to impress the Yorks and the fans! And don't forget, Holgren is going to be like the Empire State Bldg in the background! Mr. Sing proved his stupidity with the Vick affair! And after that anyone with a brain can see McC, little Jed and Doc York have pulled the plug on the guy with his ass hanging out!
McC is going to be THE MAN in the off season and your buddy better keep his pants up because there's a large shadow behind him!

Yeah, I heard you got a large, wide shadow, although Sing doesn't swing that way. He wants winners. BTW, how did he show stupidity on the Vick affair? By saying they haven't even talked about it? LOL. Come on Sherry, you can do better than that.

I hate to lance the boil between your shoulders, Terry, but I've always been a firm supporter of both McCloughan and Singletary. They have a common vision that should make for a very strong leadership. And I was merely asking a question of Matt, not hyperventilating in disbelief. I leave that to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spread offense = Alex Smith. The failure of Smith, who ran the spread at Utah under one of College football's most impressive HC's, is big in ALL the teams minds!
Smith's failure is not all his own doing for sure because of all the different OC's he's had and the stupidity of Nolan and the team! The young kid got thrown in the league like a Christian to the lions!
But Smith has the same problems that most of the spread QB's have and the teams are aware of them. To draft any of the spread QB's a team has to take a huge risk. The team must have a lot of time to break the weaknesses of these QB's. They must have exceptional QB coaches to work, not only on the physical changes needed, but the mind set of these young guys!
The spread is great to watch in College football if you love offense. But these QB's get murdered when they meet a good defense, over and over!

OK. What's the rush to get another QB? I know we need to develop one but we've got a lot of time. Shaun Hill will be a starter for the Forty Niners for years (in the ideal situation) and we'll be developing Alex Smith in the meantime. Smith is essentially Hill's future heir since the next QB we get (through the draft, presumably) will be many developmental stages behind Smith. In the NFL, in order to be successful, teams must be able to replace players (the most important position being QB. In the ideal case, a team with an old QB that will soon retire must look at its options and see which QB within the organization is ready to take the next step and lead the team the way the previous QB did. Now, in order to have the luxurious option of being able to choose between QBs that already know the offense's system, the organization must have already drafted, developed and groomed them. No one QB lasts too long. It's the organization's job to carefully replace QBs when they see it fit while also maintaining a winning culture. Bill Walsh was obsessed almost with replacing players to develop winning consistency. Walsh groomed Young to replace Montana, for example. The one mistake he made was letting Montana go two years too early. That's the reason that evaluations must be done by members of the organization as to how much longer they think certain players can stay in the NFL. In the Forty Niners' case today, Shaun Hill is our king for now. (Hopefully) Many years later he'll be replaced by a READY Alex Smith who's known the offense for a long time while being Hill's backup. And when Smith's time is done, it will be time for a new guy. But don't forget to keep drafting and developing more QBs in the meantime. Back to my original question. Why are we in a rush to get a QB this year? The best one in this year's draft (Matt Stafford) has accuracy problems (but a good arm, though). From there, the talent only drops. The best QB that we can get in this year's draft (I think) is Rhett Bomar. Smith will most probably be near 100% come training camp and we can always add a veteran QB through free agency. My point is that we don't necessarily need to rush to get a QB this year when there can be better ones in the following years' drafts. But if we indeed pick up Bomar, he can get started on the developmental process.

Then why did the 49ers call out the fire dept to get to the microphone as soon as possible to put Mr. Sing's fire out! As I have said before, Dr. Daddy York called from Youngstown and said put an end to the mention of Vick! The National Press would have a heyday with Vick even being talked aboout by the 49ers. And the team needs bad publicity like a dog needs fleas!
Just to show you the fire Mr. Sing created with his ignorance of the Vick situation, my cousin in Atlanta says the fans on sports radio there were calling in and saying the 49ers are interested in him! And that was to EVERYBODY'S glee!!
You see Randy, like Bill Walsh preached about dealing with the press, "a word mentioned is a book written!"

If you're "not hyperventilating?" then what's the 25 exclamation marks mean? A firm supporter of McC and Mr. Sing can easily see and hear that McC is running the show and Mr. Sing is carefully watching his words!
I know you're the president of the Mr. Sing kiss butt club, but don't be fooled! McC isn't going down with this guy and knows he has to prove himself this year with an inexperienced HC! And that's one of the MAIN REASONS this sagging butt pants was chosen for HC!
He'll be DIRECTED by McC ,including the draft and FA (if there will be any,) and expect to do as told despite Mr. Sing's HUGE EGO! And that's where the rub will be! It'll end up being McC with his job on the line VS.the MOUTH of a guy that doesn't let the buck stop with him! Should be interesting!
I wish I can lance that boil, but it's called a Skeeber! And it's poisonous!

This stuff is so stupid about Vick. Who cares what people think. He wins a ball game. Buys a dog pound for neglected dogs or whatever all this talk about Mr Vick being a bad guy will disappear. It's the Ultra Liberal trade mark to show this kind of hypocrisy towards another human being. We are talking about a Man here making a living. I would love to see the ultra left flip out when Vick shows up. Better yet I would love to see them on their knees after winning a game or two. It's football!! A wise man once said "even bad publicity is good publicity". I will be the first one to buy a Michael Vick Jersey, we all get a second chance right!? None of you have any right to condemn this man for what he did!! The only reason why he went to jail is because he crossed state lines doing what he did. Allowing MSM to create such hate and emototion towards this man sicken's me! Leave him alone and allow this man to work where he want's. One other thing, why would you care what a bunch of people who don't even watch the game think. The people in SF don't even deserve the 49ers. Dallas has built 2 stadiums in less than 40 with no problems, Hell Detroit has built two modern stadium since the 9ers moved to the stick. Get a grip. Leave Mike Vick alone. It wasn't that long ago most of you were drooling over him being on SF 49ers. It's a game, that's all it is. Open your own cabinet and look around I bet there is some crap in there you are not to proud of. My cabinet is full of it, I learned from it. Move along now. I can't wait for him to be a 49er!!

Do us a favor and turn of Fox News! The "Ultra Liberal" gives you away, Dude!

Can we just forget Vick (once and for all)? It's not worth our precious time.

I don't own a TV DUDE!! Don't listen to the crap on the RADIO Either DUDE!! I am sure you are a nice guy and everything Terry. God Bless.

I want pass rush and more pass rush in the draft . Then in later rounds a QB that will sit for a year or so behind Hill.

I also think that Goldson should start unless the coaches know something we don't know ,like he is too stupid to make the calls (in that case let the SS make the calls ). As long as he can finally stay healthy Goldson should be the guy at FS.

And Terry,I know you are just getting some laughs from posting such outragous nonsense and then sitting back and laughing as others respond to you BUT I have to tell you as someone who has been reading this forum for quite a while (but have not posted before) that nobody is laughing with you but are laughing at you. You sound like a fairly intelligent guy and if you stop goofing around and start posting serious comments instead of trying to be annoying you might actually contribute something good to the forum instead of being as annoying as a mosquito. jmho

I say "no" to Andre Smith...obviously not nearly enough discipline. Actually, I say no to any OT in the 1st rd. We can get a quality guy in FA, so long as we don't overpay. We still draft one, but later on. That way, McSingletary can get his impact guys...pass rusher, RB, WR, etc. early on.

Hunter Cantwell playing in a spread is news to me. I've watched Louisville for a long time, and I'd hardly call it "spread." However, I will tell you that Hunter Cantwell won't be drafted. His nickname is Hunter "Can't Throw Well" for a reason.
