It has been confirmed through multiple reliable sources today that the 49ers continue to pursue a contract with Cardinals free-agent quarterback Kurt Warner.

Warner is scheduled to visit the 49ers, perhaps on Monday, according to sources close to the situation. Warner and the Cardinals remain about $3 million to $4 million apart on a two-year deal, according to a report in today's Arizona Republic. The Cardinals have offered $20 million over two years, according to the paper. Warner's agent, Mark Bartelstein, is reportedly seeking around $29 million.

If the 49ers are able to sign Warner - who will turn 38 in June - it might be viewed as a shift of power in the NFC West. The 49ers would strengthen a position at which they have no announced starter, while taking away perhaps the Cardinals' most important player.

Warner was considered an MVP candidate for most of the season while leading the Cardinals to the NFC West championship and a spot in the Super Bowl. Warner completed 67.1 percent of his passes, throwing for 4,583 yards with 30 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. His passer rating of 96.9 ranked third in the NFL.

While there is a faction in the 49ers' hierarchy that believe the 49ers have a legitimate chance to acquire Warner, others in the decision-making process have privately expressed skepticism. The fear among some individuals in the 49ers organization is that Warner might cancel his trip to the Bay Area and re-sign with the Cardinals on Sunday.

UPDATE: The Arizona Republic's Kent Somers has independently confirmed through NFL sources that Kurt Warner is scheduled to visit the 49ers on Monday.

UPDATE II: And here's the article that's set to appear in Sunday's paper, "S.F. schedules visit with Cardinals' QB Warner."

So we should know by Sunday night if he coming to visit us on Monday?

I'd be surprised if the Cardinals don't re-sign Warner.

They do seem far apart though.

BRILLIANT !! The Niners must be helping Warner get a huge contract from the Cards, thus, lowering the Cards available cap space, so they then are able to pursue less free agents.

This sounds a bit dubious to me. I like Warner - a lot; but I can't see him fitting in with the proposed new offensive scheme. Why would he want to come to a franchise that is downplaying the passing game?

I like everything about trying to get Warner. It cost the cards more now to sign him. If by some way he does sign with the niners, the cards will not do well with Leinart at the helm giving way for the niners to win the division against the other weak teams in the west. If they do sign warner they can draft a Qb this year giving them a year to develop under Warner. Come on niners up the ante! I also think fitz would bail out of AZ if warner left.

!!?? Still can't see this really happening from either the 9ers or Warner's perspective. Smokescreen?

flaVius, plus they get rid of the bust! That's always a plus!

I don't know who these "sources" are, but I'm wondering what color the sky is in their world. I'm assuming this is just a hoax to mess with the Cards, because nobody in their right mind would actually consider Warner joining the Niners even a remote possibility. Stick with the guys we got, or work out a trade for Cutler. This is a weak year for getting a QB (through FA or draft) so let's not overpay for anyone. There is no way in hell Warner will play in SF, and anyone who thinks there's any chance of that happening is delirious.

Hi Matt.

Assuming Warner does sign with the 49ers, do you think Hill and Smith will remain with the team?

All this is doing is forcing the Cards hand to pay the man what he wants. Beat them up on the field and beat them up financially ;-)

I like it!

"While there is a faction in the 49ers' hierarchy that believe the 49ers have a legitimate chance to acquire Warner, others in the decision-making process have privately expressed skepticism."

Matt, if this is true, is it perhaps that the Yorks think highly of Warner, but Scot and Mike know that Warner does not fit in with a run-first philosophy?

I can't agree more with Pat...The Niners are just upping the ante for the Cards to pay for there QB. They should have signed Warner before hit F.A.. Now the Niners are screwing with them in my opinion. With our new O.C., and our coaches philosophy why would we want a QB like Warner? I think we'll draft a 3rd or 4th rounder and stick with Hill and Smith.

This also could be a method in lowering Smith's demands for his restructuring of his contract.

The chicken game, and whoever bluffs last loses?

This is a move by both Kurt wanting the Cards to cave in, and the 49ers wanting Alex Smith to finally cave in to a pay cut (to head more cap room before cutting Jennings).

But ultimately, if Warner actually visits us, he will be signed to the deal he wants, and Alex Smith will be cut for sure (and we will draft a rookie in the later rounds).

Question: is it perhaps that the Yorks think highly of Warner, but Scot and Mike know that Warner does not fit in with a run-first philosophy?

My response: I believe everybody thinks Warner would fit in well with this team. Just think how effective he would be on a team that has a strong running attack. It would enable him to use play-action. Maybe the 49ers are being used as a pawn, but there is only one way to find out. --Matt M.

OK Matt, I'll bite: Is there any known connection between Warner and Sing? or Raye? or Johnson?

Gee.....wouldn't it be great if we had a OC that was pass oriented to luer Warner here? Like lets say

Mike Martz?

IF THE CARDS BLOW THIS. THEY ARE GOING RIGHT BACK IN THE BASEMENT. WIN WIN FOR THE NINERS, IF THEY SIGN HIM THEY UPGRADE, THEY TAKE ARIZONAS STRENGTH AWAY, OR THEY MAKE THEM PAY MORE. ARIZONA CANT BE THAT STUPID. THEY CANT AFFORD TO BE GREEDY, LIKE THE PATS GETTING A THIRD ROUNDER FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE QB. HOW ARE THOSE TWO FIRST ROUNDERS WORKIN OUT FOR YA NOW BILLACHEAT! HA HA HA.

I agree with Matt Maiocco.

And to the poster who didn't believe that Warner fits in well with a run-first attack... Do you believe that a QB who throws the ball poorly automatically somehow hands the ball off to the RB better?

By that logic, the 49ers should sign me at QB... because my throwing arm is so bad that I must be a great at the handoff! Sheesh! to that "logic"!

In my opinion, signing Warner would be a GREAT move! Not good, but GREAT! Warner has tortured our club for the past 10 years. He has a 100 passer rating versus our club lifetime.

And now the Cards have disrespected him after he won them an NFC Championship and broke all their single-season QB records. $10M/year is middle-of-the-pack money for a QB. And Warner was top-3 in every regular-season QB stat that counted... and he was even better in the playoffs. He even tied Montana's playoff TD record (11).

We've been presented with the perfect opportunity to help ourselves and hurt the Cardinals -- our principle division rival.

Bottom line: If we sign Warner, we're the new favorites to win the NFC West and go to the playoffs.

Git 'er done!!!

and hopefully our OL can keep the old man upright

To snare Warner from our main rival would be a coup.
While I would be surprised, two possible rays of hope:
1. In joining a run first team, Warner may extend his career and good health.
2. Warner has had many teams in his career, and with this probably being his last deal, he might not be averse to moving again.
If he had only played for one team, I'd think differently, but the fact that he has moved around may just give us a chance.

Re: Brandon Jones, yeah, was quite a lot of money for his performance to date. The Niners like his character, Len Ashmont award, and his downfield blocking. The knock is health, but as he matures he should become more durable. He had an unsettled QB situation in Tenn. over the last few years, with Collins taking over from VY, so we may not have seen the best of him. Only time will tell whether it's a good move or not, so let's just be happy for our new 49er, wish him well and be positive about it.

I would say we'd be the favorites even without Warner. Boldin is unhappy, demanding to be traded. Dockett is unhappy and wants to be paid big as well. Not to mention AW is gonna want big money too soon. The Cards can't afford all this and this team is falling apart (haven't even mentioned all the turnover in their coaching staff either).

Also, KW is a dome QB and a one year solution if that. He would not be nearly as potent here. He ain't worth the money we'd have to pay to have him in red and gold.

Very good comments, TJ Hooker... especially about the run-oriented attack extending Warner's career.

I would also add that Warner has the ability to elevate Frank Gore into an MVP candidate. When Warner played with Faulk, Faulk was the most dangerous dual-threat back in the NFL, regularly putting up 180+ all purpose yards per game.

When Warner was in NY, Tiki Barber -- who resembles Faulk and Gore -- averaged 181 all-purpose yards when he played with Warner.

Not coincidentally, after Warner left St. Louis and after the Giants inserted Eli Manning, both of these star running backs fell back to Earth.

With Warner, we'll finally get the most out of Frank Gore, who has been under-utilized up to this point due to poor QB play.

This fact will help lure Warner to the 49ers... After all, at Arizona, Warner has been forced to endure Edgerrin "No Gain" James for the past 3 seasons. James is neither a run threat (lowest YPC in the NFL for 3 straight seasons) nor a pass threat (he sports two of the worst receiving hands in the league).

I'm sure he'd enjoy facing defenses that actually have to respect the play action... and that he'd enjoy working with a running back who knows how to catch and pile up yards after the catch.

I'm salivating at the idea of watching Warner/Gore in the same backfield.

I smell playoffs next season!

For those naysayers asking about why Warner would leave AZ - I have two words for you...Isaac Bruce.

Stats don't lie...look what Warner did when he was healthy in St. Louis while tossing the ball to Bruce.

In 1999, Warner completed 325 out of 499 passes for 4353 yds with 41 TD's 13 picks (109.2 QB rating)
In 2001, Warner completed 375 out of 546 passes for 4830 yds with 36 TD's 22 picks (101.4 QB rating)

In 1999, Bruce had 77 receptions for 1165 yds and 12 TD's
In 2001, Bruce had64 receptions for 1106 yds and 6 TD's

Granted that was a long time ago, but I think a lot can be said of established chemistry between a QB and WR. If Warner comes in he'll have Frank Gore pounding the rock and his old friend Isaac as one of his targets. Plus did I mention Warner, would have a beast safety valve by then name of Vernon Davis to dump the ball off to?

That being said, I could see the appeal the niners have to Kurt Warner. So keep your fingers crossed, niner fans!

If Warner is the M.V.P. everyone say he is he will fit well with our new offensive coach. People on this blog keep talking about Martz he is gone for a reason. You see he haven't been called for an interview yet. Raye will be a good coach for Warner look what happen with Elvis he threw for over 4,000 yards with the Chief's when Raye was there. It will also help Frank out. Other teams will have to stop the run & pass. Warner will also be apart of a team with some great Qb. history.

MM...I know you will do this, but you have to dig deep on this Warner story. Uncover every rock, look under every log...dig out any source you have. I agree that if the 49ers sign Warner, it is a power shift in the NFC West.

I trust that you wouldn't post this unless you thought there was real fire with this smoke. We are counting on you to keep us in the loop!

Thanks!

This Warner situation reeks of Brett Farve. The Jets made a stupid move last year by aquiring a washed up vetran and the 49ers would be doing the same thing. The 49ers don't have three recievers comparable to Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Breaston, so to expect Warner to perform like he did last year with the Cardinals is stupid. Does anybody remember how bad Warner was when he played for the Giants?

I remember Warner with a terrible Giant team. He led them to a 5-4 record and still holds the NY Giant QB completion % record.

As far as comparisons between Warner and Favre. Favre is no Warner. Warner was the best QB in the NFL last season. Favre was middle-of-the-pack his last year as a Packer.

First of all Sing and Raye have stated that they want to be almost 50-50 in running and passing. They DO want to be able to run at will at any time and they DO want to be a run first oriented team BUT they don't want to be a run all the time team and have never even hinted at that.

All Sing is saying is that last year they couldn't even get a first down on 3rd and 2 most of the time (even 3rd and 1,lol ). He is dedicated to changing that and making sure that they can also run out the clock by running if they are ahead in the 4th qtr.
That is all Sing and Raye have said. They still want to pass quite a bit.

And secondly ,I think it is pretty well known that Warner did not like Martz personally and would probably not want to go to a team that has his system of holding the ball on those 7 step drops and getting killed (at his age especially). So not having Martz is a draw to Warner not a repellant.
And having a great run game would be a dream for Warner so he could take advantage of those play action passes. Warner would love Gore, not be angry because he couldn't pass 75% of the time .

After having said all that I doubt there is any realistic chance that Warner wants to leave the Cards and I doubt the Cards will allow him to go . I hope I am wrong and he does sign with us for a couple of years and then our 2009 draft pick should be ready to step in by then...Warner/Hill/Draft pick...naw,too good to be true.

Warner would never play for a lowly team like the niners, and that/s a good thing. What is sad,is good players deem us unworthy of a visit.Iwould be shocked if Canty even visited, let alone signed.Like Warner,Canty would come only if we served as a bargaining chip.Pile on if I/m wrong.

This is great theater, anyway it goes. What a PR nightmare this must be down in Phoenix. The warm fuzzy glow of the SB appearance disappeared as fast as you can whisper Bill Bidwell. Strange things happen when guys with huge egos feel disrespected.

BTW...The Chronicle is worthless. Crumpacker should be ahsamed...he has nothing!

No wonder they are about to fold. Embarrassing for the hometown paper to be so out of the loop.

Darren...I thought you were banned, just like on KNBR!

A lowly team? The same lowly team that finished second in the division and two games back from the Cards, yet ended the season 5-4 under Coach Sing?

You call yourself the "truthpeddler"? Come on man, that's false advertisement.

BTW, Jones seemed to have no problem signing on (we did say we were gonna take it slow in FA):

What was it like meeting with Mike Singletary?

BJ: At first I thought he was a real tough-nosed guy. And you can tell he is. But after talking to him, you know that he wants it. His will to win -- you know, the fire in his eyes that makes you want to play for a guy like that. I've always heard that players love to play for him and they play hard for him. Just meeting him at breakfast. It just let's you know, you get a feel for it, to want to play for a guy because he wants to win, he wants to get this thing going in the right direction. And so does the GM, so it's going to be great coming out here playing for a coach like that, and I can't wait to start.

One more thought while I am rethinking this thing: Warner in SF would add a lot of playoff experience to a team that has virtually none. And, obviously, he would solve the vertical threat problem that Singletary has noted as a weakness. I don't see him coming just for $--but if he thought the 9ers were the best chance at another playoff run, MIGHT this interview be for real?

LOL, I think you're right about Darren.

Does that mean Shaun Hill would have to give up his #13?

PFT has an interesting theory on the Warner story:

"Then again, it could be that G.M. Scot McCloughan has agreed to participate in the charade as a favor to Warner's agent, Mark Bartelstein, who desperately needs to recapture the leverage Warner squandered with his constant "I'll play for the Cardinals or no one" routine. Even if the Niners don't land Warner, Bartelstein will be indebted to McCloughan -- and McCloughan would be able to seek a return favor at some point in the future."

"Warner would never play for a lowly team like the niners, and that/s a good thing. What is sad,is good players deem us unworthy of a visit."
If im not mistaken warner decided to play for another lowly team not too long ago- think they were called the cardinals?? seriously thought I do still think that this is posturing by both sides but only time will tell

"Strange things happen when guys with huge egos feel disrespected."
You just defined Mr. Sing to a tee. Watch for those "strange things" to happen next year!

The Niners have nothing to lose by playing this out, and even if they don't sign Warner, they may gain in other ways, as already mentioned.

It could be posturing, but I really think there is a legit shot. Warner's a winner, Sing's a winner and I wouldn't discount the hardcore Christian connection. Think about how Sing talks about how he wants to help develop great men, not just great plays. For a guy like Warner I think that kind of moral purpose and influence sounds appealing. If Warner signs it is IMHO that we could be Superbowl bound, playoffs are an automatic.

However, Jimmy is the biggest X factor, I remember thinking two years ago, "how diffrent of a team could we be with Hos at the OC helm?" Boy was I wrong....:-(

Mr. Singletary is about as humble as they come, Sherry.

I'd consider trading for Cutler who the Broncos are reportedly shopping before doing anything. Warner is a sack waiting to happen and a big time fumbler. Plus for the 10 mil a year he's seeking? I can live with Raye as the OC choice but if they bring in Warner I'm looking for a new team! I've be a 49er fan since 78! I have been hoping for a turnaround but with these personnel choices are heading for a BUST!

Has anyone noticed that Skeebers adds absolutely nothing to the comments here. He must be the loud mouthed drunk that sits about two rows down from me at the 'stick. He doesn't have any idea who's winning by halftime, but he screams and yells anyway.
McC's on the line this year. Outside of bringing in Holmgren to work with McC in a year or two, if McC doesn't produce this year, well, let's just say, he'll be on his way to Youngstown, OH. after next year. And unemployment is around 16% there.

HAHAHAHAHA! ...Excuse me! Great joke!!

"IF THE CARDS BLOW THIS. HA HA HA."

Exactly, the Cards blow this and Kurt Warner signs with the niners, then the Cards will find themselves the laughing stock of the league again, what it is, is the Cards don't want to break the bank on this guy, yet it seems they may have to if they really want to keep him.

Good comment--at least, I agree 100%. Watch your backside, however. The last time I tried to point out a "hardcore Christian connection" I got lambasted by some who took it as an insult to their religion (which happens also to be mine). Apparently, stating the obvious is not permitted if Christianity is involved, even though Sing would be the first to acknowledge that his faith is a significant factor in his approach to football.

Hey Matt is there any knowledge if the niners are interested in Cutler? Looks like he might be on the block and would be a great pickup. I think it would be a better pickup then Warner.

What would you say is the 49ers end-game here? If they sign Warner, he's a two year fix, max. You have to keep Hill because he has proven he can step in and win when necessary.

Keeping Smith at that point would make no sense because you need to have someone who you can develop into a starter 2 years down the line, no?

I believe if the niners are serious about Warner and somehow do sign him, it will also be the end of Alex Smith. Warner will get 2 years -- enough for a Rookie QB to study under him.

More posts Matt...Please! For the love of God, be with us during our time of need!

Of course Cutler would be a better pickup than Warner. Warner is 38 and Cutler's only a year into the prime of his career. Of course, Cutler is also going to come cheaper moneywise, but at a much bigger price as far as acquiring him via trade.

Do us all a favor Candy! Find out Skeebers email address and kiss Sing's butt with him and leave us alone! Please!! The rest of us live in the real world and know the 49ers record after he was given the nominal HCing job had little to do with him. All the coaching staff pulled together to make a lousy team an average loser. Remember when he was going to pull Hill? If Mr. Sing had his way he would have been 4 and 5.
The Western division was a joke! The Cards played way over their heads and that's how they got to the SB. They beat the 49ers twice anyway. Next year it will be Sing way over his head.

Hi Matt,

I just signed up so I could join the discussion. I enjoy reading the updates thru your website, keep up the good work.

I am excited about the possibility of Warner to 49ers. If that goes thru, I think we might get lucky to lure Boldin to join the niners, possible? Maybe.

My question to you, Matt, is this: Have you heard any rumors/news/speculations/reports about the 49ers being interested in Raiders RB Justin Fargas? Thanks.

Skeebers: You are a smart guy. I know from reading your posts. Trust me. I've been living in Phoenix since 1994. You have NO idea how IDIOTIC the Bidwills are. Really.

They have had TWO winning seasons in 20 years in AZ. TWO! They got here in 1988. 10 years later (1998) they went to the playoffs. 20 years later (2008) they again went to the playoffs. That's it!

In 1998, they went to Dallas and UPSET the hated Cowboys (they lost the next week against Minnesota). Still, the fan base was sky high here. Finally, the Cards, after 10 years in the desert, had seemed to turn the corner.

So how did the Cards repay their loyal fans after that playoff win in Dallas. They let THREE of their BEST players walk away in FA (Larry Centers, Lomas Browm and Jamir Miller). Walk away. For NOTHING. These were three of their best players who were also team leaders.

Needless to say, check their performance AFTER that 1998 season. Not very pretty.

Trust me. if there's a way to F**K up the afterglow of their stunning postseason, Cardinal management will find it.

You're a smart guy.

Matt, I have a question. On NFL network Adam Sheftler stated that the Patriots and Chiefs were in talks for about a week regarding the Matt Cassel trade. Is there any possible tampering going on here since talks went down prior to the free agency kickoff?

It ain't tampering if the other team doesn't care.

Hard-Hat has the floor! The guy is on fire!! When you mention Joe Montana playoff success experiences and then you mention another QB in the same breath. That is a sign of a pretty good QB. Warner Has killed the niners. Beat us like ugly step children. Plays at a very high level whenever he faced the 49ers. Today's athletes are not like those even from 20 years ago. You know it and I know it. The way Warner looked in the SB. He sure didn't look like any gray beard now did he.
Sign him, we have a couple of very exciting young athletic receivers. I think things would work out fine. Sign him! give him his 14 mill...hell pay him 16 mill, 1 mill a game. Why the hell not. At least there would be no more questions about the QB position....for awhile at least

Candy? Are you still mad at me for taking your girlfriend?

As for Sing, he's 5-4 as HC so far. That's a winner last time I checked. Quit hating, Sherry. Talk about being a realist, LOL! You can't even buy a clue!

Hello Matt,

Given that the 49ers have had a history of not letting free agents that visited them leave without signing with the team, and if Warner were to indeed visit the 49ers in Santa Clara on Monday, then what is the chance of the 49ers offering him a contract that he cannot refuse and sign with the 49ers right away...

Also, if Warner were to sign with the 49ers...Do you see the 49ers taking Mark Sanchez with the #10 overall pick to groom under Warner for two years...

I am assuming that the 49ers will only keep only one of these two QBs (Hill and Smith) if Warner were to sign...

This qoute from Don Banks at SI: "Uh oh. The 49ers just assured themselves of not making the playoffs in 2009. They re-signed veteran linebacker Takeo Spikes, who has played for four teams over the span of 11 NFL seasons, without ever once making the playoffs. He's the league's kiss of death." YIKES!! Who knew this up here and didn't mention it!!!

I've read through the comments and a lot of you are making amazing leaps of logic. I think the most entertaining I read was "If Warner signs here maybe we can get Boldin."

The 49ers are not going to sign a 38-year old QB to such big dollars over the next two years, because we have large contracts to pay on, namely Nate Clements and Justin Smith. Not to mention McCloughan wants to get Willis and Staley signed to big extensions.

I don't know why anyone would assume "the Yorks must want Warner and McCloughan doesn't." The Yorks want to build a stadium, yes, but selling tickets in Candlestick for two years does not get a stadium built.

I'd be shocked if this happens. Wouldn't be the first time I've been shocked. But I really, really doubt this is happening.

On the other hand....

I'm amazed the conspiracy theorists aren't all over this. How many of you rant and rave that McCloughan wants to salvage his investment in Smith. He doesn't want to admit Smith is a bust, and all that.

What if McCloughan saw what happened with Aaron Rodgers, sitting behind an aging Hall of Famer, then he comes out after learning and puts up a 93 rating on the season. Hello? Cut Smith and keep Hill? No, they keep both of them because McCloughan wants Smith to learn behind a Hall of Famer for two seasons, and then they unleash all the potential in 2011.

Trust me. The Warner signing. Ain't happenin.

Unless it does.

Hi Matt, I think a pattern has developed, D. Jackson, Lelie, Johnnie Morton, Brandon Jones, all sigined as free agents with no production. The organization does not seem able to pick playmakers. Think about it, besides Frank Gore there are no homegrown playmakers. And Frank was a 3rd pick so I have to think they lucked out. Going through the whole York reign and no playmakers. I doubt if Bill Walsh wwould've gone after Warner. At that age they lose it in a matter of quarters. The judging of talent leaves alot to be desired with the front office.

Indiana Jim,if Warner comes Smith is gone. He never going to be a good QB. It will be better for the 49ers to groom a young QB then have a Bust as thier back up.

Really, yummy I guess you have one of those "sources close to the situation," right?

Last I checked Smith at 24 is still young, therefore capable of "grooming." All one needs is physical tools and willingness to be groomed.

Like a Shih Tzu.

K Warner a 49er? I can see all the painful fumbles already!

Lets make ARIZONA PAY baby!

Just like what the Giants are doing to the dirty dodgers and Manny

Warner deserves to get more than 10 mil/yr

It's pretty simple regarding Warner. If you give a guy like that protection from his line, a good running game and a few good receivers, he can play at a high level for years. Decades? No. Years? Yes.

Indiana Jim,Smith had 4 years. He sucks. He's not getting any better..

Why is that dbl posting happening?!?!?!? That sucks....medic!! MEDIC!! GEEEEEEEEEEZZZ

Hey everybody, great to be back. I got us down for 6 and 10 for 2009, but to sign Warner, maybe get Holt if the Rams cut him, slot Bruce/Holt together and with Gore running the ball with the returning Norris, can we say we are holding the 1 million dollar briefcase and taking the deal? This could be the way to the playoffs.

I wish we grabbed Marvin Harrison.

I seem to remember Warner stumbling alot when he handed off. Even in the Superbowl. He'll be doing a lot of that with the Niners if they actually sign him. Handing off that is...........

The worst a MS team will be is 8-8.

Yummy, Smith's been injured for the last 29 games, you don't know that, Karnak the Magnificent.

With Warner:

Win @ Eagles
Win @ Colts
Win @ Minn.
Win vs. Chi
Win vs. Titans for Warner knows the Titans

that's +5 wins for us and propels us to 11 and 5 if we signed Warner.

Indiana Jim,stop with the smith excuses. when he played he sucked. he couldn't even beat out j turnover!

I hope this is just to skrew with the cards and make them spend more for Warner.

U think we'll try and trade for Cutler? He would be good...

So we negotiate a contract for Arizona. We do the work. They benefit from it.

This is the marketplace at work people.
Is Kurt worth a look?
Why not?
He would be a better option as mentor to Alex then Dilfer was IMO. Like him or not, Alex is still young, has experience under his belt, and needs a lot of work to improve.
I truly think he's a better athlete then Eli with better mechanics and a stronger arm.
What Eli has is a better OLine and a ground attack that's second to none.
Once Alex gets his head out of his backside and speeds up the decision making process, he can be salvaged.
Right now he's an expensive work in progress.
If he's competitive and willing to work for a better payday, his chances are better here then anywhere he'd have to start over at.
We'll see how he plays it, but the Warner interest is certainly a business tactic for both sides IMO.

Let's see what Cassell turns into under Haley in KC.
It comes down to coaching in this business.
I've listened to countless years of analysis regarding talent and potential. When you look at Montana and evaluate him on measurables he's average.
When you realize that he obtained top coaching in a system he was able to master, he became the legend he is.
Teamwork is a balance of talents and it requires constant improvements.
I'm of the belief that having a foundation and framework in place to build on starts with the line play.
Nolan blew the pick with Alex. Now it's about making the improvements to minimize the cap impact.
If he stays, no problem.
If he goes, cap hit, try again.
I'm in favor of minimizing the cap impact so we can use his money more constructively now, when it matters.

yea that's because of his center stepping all over his feet. I'm just surprised that he could still move after having 300+ lineman all over his toes. you should be amazed that he could get edge the rock WHILE stumbling rather than pointing out the stumbling which was not his fault.

In this league, it's all about planning and managing rosters.
Successful teams don't overspend for non productive talent and survive.
If we can improve the QB play with Kurt or Gus or anyone else, it's worth a shot.
No one can guarantee that Haynesworth will excel in DC if the scheme doesn't work.
We need pieces that fit and a plan to fit them into.
NoPlan collected pieces, somewhere along the way they should work together in a perfect world.
I love Nate, I just feel that we could have used the money more wisely. However, he's young enough to have it spread out, so perhaps he'll be a bargain as contracts move hightr and higher each year.
For now, grab the missing pieces from NoPlans model and see how quickly we can improve.
IMO, this years' schedule is much more favorable then last years' was.
Let's realize that the NFC West is wide open. If we snag Kurt and force AZ to use Leinart, we have an advantage.
If Kurt returns to AZ without Haley, things could be a little rougher for him.
Plenty of changes ahead, gotta hope we get more moves right, then wrong.

Wondering why the focus on LDE too?
Guys like Tank Johnson and Colin Cole are out there who have the size to play inside.
OTs Ray Willis and Khalif Barnes seem like guys I'd be interested in also.
Guess it's a structured process, but would like to snag a bonafide starter and relieve any pressure to force a rookie onto the field if we didn't have to.

And if we're looking at DEs, why not Ogor Olshansky?
Played for Manusky and already works in a 3-4.
If you're talking to,(or expecting to be), Chris Canty, Igor should be on the list too.

There has been a lot of talk about Brandon Jones' fat contract, well it could have been worse. Antonio Smith left Arizona for Houston, who threw $35mil at him over 5 years...that's $7mil per!
$7mil for a guy who hasn't started a full season and averages less than 3 sacks per year is shocking. Good player, yes...worth that kind of money, only time will tell, but likely, no.

Marc: Re Olshansky, the fact that SD made no attempt to re-sign him, after investing a 2nd in him leads me to believe he isn't all that. Maybe towards the end of FA he'll be available, at a much lower price.

The other thing I was wondering is, just how much better than Shaun Hill is Matt Cassell? In my view, not that much. Their stats are highly comparable, but the glaring difference is the supporting cast of players and coaches. Cassel threw to Welker and Randy, after being protected by a line which protected Brady admirably. The fact that Cassell was sacked 47 times (Brady only 21 times in '07) show's that he also had issues getting the ball out, at times.
No, I'm happy with Hill and his inferior salary...unless we can get Warner, in which case, throw the damn wallet at him!
The Warner deal would not only strengthen us, but weaken severely our main rival...so that'd be ideal!

Nice slip huh? Ogor?
Of course, Igor could be an Ogor?

Lol, then he'd be Igor The Ogor!

It might catch on!

Does anyone have an opinion about Warner coming to the worst team in the NFL at pass protection last year? One of the worst over the last four years combined?

Naw, Warner wouldn't care about that at his age nor the fact we don't have Larry Fitzgerald.

how about going after cutler? i heard he is on the trading block. go get him. whatever it takes.

The Cardinals, historically in AZ., have had bad to mediocre O-Lines. The last two years (under Russ Grimm) the line has played well.

Whether or not Warner comes to SF, the O-Line has to be coached better and has to play better (for the offense to succeed).

Matt,

Is there any chance the 9ers go after Cutler?

Marc -that was a hoot... somehow Marty Feldman in Young Frankenstein came to mind!

Matt,

What about Khalif Barnes as a tackle? Have there been discussions, now that he's sat in FA for a few days? He seems to be the kind of run blocker Raye would be looking for...

Thanks for all your hard work!

Hey Marco I hear you about line stats and certainly RT spot must be addressed now! However ,Coach Martz' system of offense affects those numbers. The reintroduction of a true Fullback (and the above mentioned RT move) hopefully will show much better on paper. Larry Fitzgerald-alas only AZ has that piece of the puzzle!

This looks like a negotiating tactic for Warner. Why would he come to the Niners? Warner wants to throw. Singletary wants to run. If Martz were still the offensive coordinator the move would make more sense.

Question: Is there any chance the 9ers go after Cutler?

My response: No, I don't think so. It's not that the 49ers wouldn't want Cutler on their team. But the only reason the Broncos were looking to move Cutler was because they had their eyes on Matt Cassel. The 49ers have nothing to offer the Broncos that would convince them to part ways with their starting QB. --Matt M.

Question: What about Khalif Barnes as a tackle?

My response: He's still out there. The Raiders are interested. The 49ers haven't gotten involved, yet. But I'd agree that he would definitely upgrade the offensive line. --Matt M.

Steve I concur with the negotiating tactic however I think there is a common misconception about the run offense motif. Recent comments by Coach Singletary/Raye have been directed at clarifying comments made near the separation with Coach Martz at the end of last season! From what I can discern Coach merely wants a team that can turn to the power running game when it is the best tactical move under specific conditions-the passing game WILL be a vital component of this offense.

Yet? Excellent... :)

Thanks Matt!

Question: Why would he (Warner) come to the Niners?

My response: The only reason is money . . . which is seen in the NFL as "respect." If the 49ers offer more respect than the Cardinals, they have a chance. --Matt M.

Well said. It's too bad this subject causes so much confusion in Niner Land.

We are all products of our environment and backround. We tend to try to forget our failures and duplicate our past succcess.

Singletary's 85 Bears were a smash mouth, ball control team that played great defense. Led by a Neanderthal HC (and DC).

That said, they had a great passing QB in Jim McMahon (who set some 70 passing records at BYU). That Bears team led the NFC in scoring that year.

McMahon's passing skills were a key ingredient in winning games in 1985 for the Bears. Nobody knows that better than MS.

Thanks GeoMak-yes I remember that 1985 Bears team soundly defeating the 49ers that year ... sobering!

Matt, I think that if the 49ers get Warner then the next best step would be to release Alex and attempt to draft a "QB of the future" in the 2-3 round range and spend the 1-2 years that Warner would be under contract to tutor him. Have you given any thought to that plan?
Thanks!

PS Granzellas is back and better than ever!

Sorry but I just have to reply in that case after reading your post hightop. Since you "get it" maybe you can help spread the word here and elsewhere.

As I've always said, it's not how many passes you throw, it's how effective you are when throwing them.

Using another Neanderthal as an example, the 1986 Giants under Bill Parcells. Phil Simms still holds the SB record for passing completion percentage when he went 22-25 in SB XXI.

Take a good/great running game and defense. Mix in an efficient passing attack that can (hopefully) hit a couple of homeruns a game. Then minimize stupid penalties and excessive turnovers.

That formula might be "boring" but will keep a team in the playoffs year after year after year.

This is a little off-topic, but did anyone else see that the Cards are retaining Gabe Watson with a 2nd round tender? I don't know what value Scotty places on this kid, but a huge, relatively agile, young (25 years old), and proven NT might be worth a 2nd rounder to a team that's been looking for a nose for a long time. Anyone think the big kid gets a look?

Remember folks, Singletary made a point of saying it wouldn't be a "three yards and a cloud of dust" offense. I suspect that the game plan will be more dynamic than most people think.

Exactly-..as a fan I can only profess elation when our team is winning and the formula you described is a high percentage method of achieving that goal !

do the 49ers have any interest in signing Sean Jones?

Or trading for Michael Bush?

Okay, Guys, I have a novel theory on what's going on here. Yeah, you heard it here first: Warner and 49ers are using each other to drive the price up on his contract with the Cards.

So what do you think? Genius, right? I'm awesome.

What's your next scoop? The world is round?

I think the guy is looking for a free lunch and maybe a helicopter ride.

LOL-alrighty then!

I see your point about the Broncos wanting Cassell. I'd still like to know the 9ers would at least attempt to negotiate a deal with the Broncos. With the way they've handled the situation thus far, the Broncos will have a hard time keeping Cutler when his contract expires. They might be interested in making a different deal for Cutler if the 9ers can put something together. I wonder what McDaniels thought of Alex Smith coming out of college. Maybe it only takes a pick and a player. Who's off limits? Gore? Willis? Staley? VD? Clements? Would the 9ers part ways with any of these guys and a draft pick for a franchise QB? I honestly haven't seen Cutler play very often but the games I have seen, he has looked pretty damn good.

This isn't quite so cut and dried. The Cards have a lot invested in Matt Leinart.

If the 49ers or anyone else is willing to pay Warner 6 - 10 million more than AZ (with more upfront money) it muddies the water for AZ.

Living in AZ. I know all there is to know about this situation (Warner wants to stay in a passing offense, Leinart is no Kurt Warner and so on and so forth).

I have always maintained that Warner leaving the Cards is a long shot. It is, however, slightly more complicated than some people think.

This is Warner's last contract. Anybody that doesn't think that an extra 6 - 10 million doesn't matter to Kurt is awfully naive.

The longer guys sit out on the market, the more likely the Niners are to go bargain hunting. Any thoughts on who the 49ers will look at in the coming week?

On that note, have you heard any buzz around the league about Chris McAlister, Jeff Garcia or Tra Thomas?

Matt,

One other question, if the 9ers do sign Warner do you think they'll continue their efforts to renegotiate Smith's contract or do they just cut him?

Matt, sure the Raiders are "rumored" to show interest. But after canceling his trip to NO (they resigned Stinchcom) there isn't even news of Barnes having an interview anywhere. Is there a chance we could pursue him if the market is cooler than we thought?

Mey Matt, Thanks for all the updates! I have a question that is slightly off topic; regarding the Cassel trade, how did the Cheifs only give up a 2nd round pick? I was under the impression that if a franchise player required two first round picks. Can you elaborate...

Spikes was a underrated FA pick up for us. 96 tackles, 3 INT's, 1 sack and 2 forced fumbles ain't too shabby for his first year in a new scheme. Plus, he was a big leader in the locker room and a good mentor for Patrick Willis.

Glad we got him back!

Did the Niners ever express any interest in Matt Cassel? Seeing how ridiculously cheap the Chiefs got him from the Patriots, I wonder if the Niners had even looked into acquiring him. A second rate, washed up player and a 2nd round pick is something we definitely could have given up for Cassel.

That was one friend (Belichick) helping out another friend (Pioli). That's kind of unusual but the only explanation that makes sense here.

I don't think they shopped Cassell. It would seem that if they had openly shopped him that they would have been able to get more for him than a second round pick in return.

The Pats apparently cleared up 20 million in cap room with this move. Maybe that's the situation:

The Pats help out Pioli (who would then "owe" them in the future).

The Pats clear up a lot of cap space.

Mike Vrabel isn't just cut . . . he has a new team (with his old boss).

Well GeoMak...You insinuate the "subject" as you call it, "causes so much confusion" for us in Niner Land. The "subject" started when Mr. Sing came out, immediately when named HC, by stating his philosophy is the use of a "power running game." And then HE brought up, by going into the "Neanderthal" days as you call it, the name of old time average (you write great, LOL) QB Jim McMahon and the Bear offense. He's the QB who ran the Bears "Neanderthal" type offense. Or is McMahon in the Hall of Fame unknown to us in Niner Land? And yea! Ditka and Ryan were Neanderthals who won a SB... ONE YEAR! But another Neanderthal was a guy named Singletary. It seems to me (a Niner Land Alumnus) that team was known for its defense, not offensive greatness. And it was just ONE YEAR! How many years did the 49ers wide open offense win consistently? I think that offense won 5 SB's at last check!
Yes! The Bears beat the 49ers in '85. But let's go back into the "Neanderthal" days and check the record of that team in all the other games against the Niners.
The last time I saw Ditka and his "Neanderthals" at the stick he threw his gum at a fan when he got his ass kicked along with Sing! He just was handed his lunch with a 40 something to 0 loss to a Niner team that didn't even make the playoffs that year. I won't mention the Bears with McMahon getting trounced by the Bill Walsh 9ers, in freezing BEAR LAND, in the NFL Championship!
Then you write we "tend to try to forget our failures and duplicate out past success." Well dude, that's what has Niner Land in an uproar. You see we DON'T WANT Sing to forget the "FAILURES" of that "NEANDERTHAL" offense he wants to install here. It smelled rotten then and is considered "Neaderthal" now.
Niner Land is used to exciting, winning offense! Yea, "exciting" and "winning" can be used together to equal "WINS!" Or maybe you forgot how to win and only remember the trash the Yorks have put on the field since they've been here in the "present" days! PS..McMahon? Bringing up his stats at BYU? OH BOY are you living in the "Neanderthal" days!

I think the Warner signing make sense in many ways:
1) the 49ers need a quarteback with a strong arm (which Hill does not have) to open up the running game that Sing wants to highlight..teams defenses will be able to shorten the field considerably if the 49ers don't have at least the "potential" to throw long and thus their running game will be weakened.....2) Having the stronger armed Warner as the starter will open up/stretch the field and cause the running game to fluourish if (if the 49ers are able to snag Warner and upgrade their reciving core (Crabtree?) watch out!)...3) taking Warner from the Cardinals will weaken their team and thus help the 49ers....4) Warner could mentor a young quarterback that the 49ers draft in 2009....4) Warner is a winner..look what he has done in the years he has started (If I remember correctly he has gone to 3 super bowls and he is one of the most accurate passers in the history of the NFL).... if the 49ers don't sign Warner they MUST get a quarterback with an arm strong enough to stretch the field to open up the running game.

Ah but Ronnie do the Niners have the cash to pay Cassels and would he want to come here?

A trade could have been forced on Cassel but what sane team would want to give up a top round pick plus $15 million cold hard $$$ for just one year? And it would be one year because Cassel would undoubtedly refuse to sign a multi year deal with a team he doesn't want to play for.

And why on earth would any ambitious QB want to play for a 3 yards and a cloud of dust team with a linebacker rookie head coach & an OC with a long history of NFL failure?

remember Matt having a delayed Birthday for his daughter today. Happy Birthday Little one!!

If a non exclusive franchise player signs with another team his original team gets two first round picks. It appears that a franchise player can be traded for whatever the teams feel appropriate(subject to nfl approval). Here's a poorly written link.

Sherry,

Please quit spamming the comment section with your irrelevant rhetoric. Did you think we wouldn't notice it after you posting the same comment 6 times? Might want to learn how to post a comment before making one.

Ah, the "3 yards and a cloud of dust" talk that Singletary said is not what he wants for a offense. Reading comprehension might help your misunderstanding on this matter.

I think the server is starting to over load.....
The game has changed so much in 25 years. There were no TV time outs back then. That has actually changed the game.
Momentum is changed with a tv time out..

Why do I bring this up? I don't know. I just think the game has changed so much since "The Bill and Joe Show". Parity is the word here fellas. Big big money free agency and a stupid UNION have pretty much turned the NFL into an anything can happen league and the key is getting to the playoffs. Anything can happen. Just look at the super bowls Since the last 49er Championship. All kinds of teams that would never have even come close 20 years ago are starting to show up..win or lose.

Is that the best you can come up with, Sherry? Candy? It's too bad your girlfriend didn't live up to her name. With that said, I'll stop lowering my intelligence by conversing with you son. Sorry for feeding the trolls, Matt.

Canty signs with the NY Giants for 6 yrs/$43 mill, with over 17 mill guaranteed. Makes the Justin Smith deal look better. I mean really, Ben Canty?

At least this time i had nothing to do with this scuffle....

ok so who here thinks that warner leaves without a contract? i am like 50-50, because this could be the nfl equivalent of " if you don't goto the prom with me, i will go with her". scotty know this, and offer warner exactly if not a little more than arizona??? any thoughts? i didn't tredge through 150 posts tonight cuz the last 30 or so hurt my head , so if anyone else thought of this, sorry for re-harshing your thoughts

and what about ex 49er corey smith? matt have you heard anything about whats going on with him? i hope they find they guy, i liked that guy.

Karma, this is getting to High Noon is what it looks like to me. Warner prides himself on his integrity, same as Singletary. I don't see him getting on a plane and coming here just for a dog and pony show. If he flies here, he'll leave with a signed contract.

Looks like there might be a change of plans regarding Warner's visit:

49ers | Warner not committed to visit?
Sun, 01 Mar 2009 14:32:26 -0800

Darren Urban, of AZCardinals.com, reports unrestricted free-agent QB Kurt Warner (Cardinals) is not fully committed to his visit with the San Francisco 49ers Monday, March 2, and could decide to cancel, according to ESPN's John Clayton.

Looks like Darren has been exposed.

I am still looking for that ignore button so I don't even have to scroll past Terry's negative rants against the Niners and most of the Niner's fans. LOL

Hey Matt, how about it,can you add an ignore poster function ?

But unfortunately 3 yards and dust is the perception Sing has left with the rest of the league and that's hardly been contradicted by the signing of a head banger fullback and a receiver better known for blocking than catching. Or by the hire of Jimmy Raye.

A case of seeing what he does rather than listening to what he says.

Who is Matt?

Matt Maiocco is in his 14th year covering the 49ers. He has reported for The Press Democrat since 2000. He is a three-time winner of Pro Football Writers of America awards. Rotoworld.com ranked "Instant 49ers" as the No. 2 NFL team blog in the country in 2007. Maiocco has written two books, "Roger Craig's Tales from the 49ers Sideline" and "San Francisco 49ers: Where Have You Gone?" Matt can also be heard regularly on KNBR (680-AM) during the season. He is also been added this season as a regular guest on ESPN's "First Take."
