So who is going to put together the first 7 round mock draft??? Come on draft experts, let's see it.

I meant from the people who "live" here. Lots of opinions, lots of hot air, but not many of them are willing to put it down in writing. I'd love for some of the people who talk about what a waste McCloughan and the front office is, to put together a mock draft so we can all see how brilliant they are.

In fact, hey Matt, how about a contest for the readers. Something like most accurate two round mock, something like that. With all the egos around here, I'm sure bragging rights would be worth it.

I like Andre Smith. Coach Sing will whip him into shape.

Can someone please explain to me why we alternate picks with Buffalo?

Question: Can someone please explain to me why we alternate picks with Buffalo?

My response: The Bills and 49ers finished with 7-9 records. All teams (except Super Bowl participants) that finish with the same record alternate picks, with the first round decided by strength of schedule. --Matt M.

MM mentioned this a couple of weeks ago. I think it has to do with the fact we ended up with the same record, so we alternate picks

Hey Matt, do think this year there is a better possibility of trading up?

Why do you want us to trade up? Is there a particular player? (I am really interested)
I actually think we are at the sweet spot in the draft. The kid won't be too expensive and we kinda have our pick of who we draft. there are so many holes in the club, we really can pick the best player who falls into our lap and he'll probably start. The only exception is P.Willy.

Am I the only one creeped out by the drafttek stock photos?

I totally agree with you Jon in SoCal. I think where we are at with the #10 pick is perfect. Just looking at positions of need for the team I think at least one (if not two or three) of the following players falls to us for us to take at the #10 spot - Crabtree, Cury, Raji, Jenkins, Sanchez, Stafford, Orakpo or any 4 of the top tackles. I say stay at 10 and if anything 3 of those guys might be left and we move down a couple of spots we still get a guy we want and also pick up an extra 3rd or 4th round pick.

Hi Matt, I just read over the new rules changes and we're not too far from flag football. The way they're going it won't be long before there are lawyers on the sidelines contesting rules and hits. Game called due to litagation. Singletary must be doing backflips. I hope we don't try a trade up or down, I think the front office will get fleeced like little red riding hood going to grandmas' house.

Well Toby-since you are(I quote)"more levelheaded and smarter than most of the posters around here"why don't you start?!

Everything begins with Mark Sanchez at #10.

All the rest of the apples fall from that tree.

Hope springs eternal Franchise...

Scout.com posted a mock draft today with SF still taking Andre Smith at #10. (raji, Rak, everette brown and Sanchez were off the board) NFL network's mike mayock talks about how Andre Smith has good tape. and that he is a talented football player, but IMO he looked really sloppy at his pro day and an OT that can only put up 19 reps on the bench is concening. (I think Percy Harvin put up 20) I don't have tape to look at, all have is DVR of Andre Smith getting mauled by robert ayers at the senior bowl. Am I missing something or does Andre Smith seem like a HUGE mistake? MM what's your objective evaluation of Andre Smith in the SF offesnsive line? Does he fit or is this a potential waste of a pick? I have seen some mocks where he falls almost out of the 1st round entirely.

Hard to say about A.Smith isn't it -many of the Draftniks tout his skills and yet qualify a vote of confidence with questions about desire and discipline (desire being the real hitch it seems to me). Personally ,and I'm not an expert -just a fan, (if we go OT here) of the two guys likely to be available I like Oher. He may not have quite the physical skills of A Smith but he has a kind edge about him...he and Chilo seem to sync somehow...but this is just intuition on my part. The interesting thing about this draft is our first pick is not a lock- definetly could have a surprise!

It's got to be Oher at #10 unless the 49ers sign Marvel Smith, then they go with what they feel is "BPA".

Oher IMO would be a reach at 10, more so than say a Percy,Percy,Percy who could make Hill look super, as well as spell Gore, return punts. If we took Harvin I would not be disappointed.

Razor,

How can Oher be a "reach" when pretty much ALL the scouts have Oher rated in the top 10 & no sign of Percy in the top 15?

Why do people even look at the Mock Drafts? The only pick they ever get right is pick #1. Any sometimes not even that. It's futile to even speculate who is going to be there at the #10 pick.

This seems like the first draft in many years where the talent rankings for the top 12-15 guys are very different. If Detroit doesn't take Stafford, many mock drafts are lost. Most agree that 6 guys will be gone before #10, Stafford, Monroe, J Smith, Curry, Crabtree and Orakpo. After that, opinions vary widely. McC and team better do their homework on all the top guys. Just no telling who will be there.

I think the issue this year is that there is no consensus overall #1 pick. It is not like there is a huge amount of elite talent, there is just a bunch of guys that are about the same. I agree with most of the posters here that the player picked is going to be the BPA in a position of need. If you are desperate for an OT, take an OT; but there is no OT out there that is so much better than if you need a QB you shouldn't take Stafford.

In Mayok I trust and Oher is not even in his top 20. Percy is his #15. Oher is inconsistent when you study the tape and RT material. I feel someone like Loadholt in the 2nd would be equal value. Percy would be someone who would give us the big play threat we've been lacking along with versatility who would be able to open up opportunities for other offensive players. Because of these reasons I feel Harvin would not be a reach so much as a lift for our team at pick 10 as long as the (3)elite OTs are gone & elite pass rusher(s) are gone.

Did anyone hear the Ralph & Tom show yesterday. MM was on it and Ralph is STILL talking about the interview with Sing. He's now playing the sympathy card and trying to get all to back him now. Matt, don't give in to the razor .......

Razoreater-hope I didn't start this with my post(tried to qualify my response which was IF(big if)we take an OT at ten of the two projected to be there my preference is Oher)-and I agree about the reach.I 've stated recently my real preference would be trade down to lower first thereby getting another second round...in which case lower first round preference would be to pickup Connor Barwin. Also agree Harvin would be a great pickup although some would call him a slight reach at 10th.Mike Mayok is definetly a premiere Draftnik -last years' display at draft was impressive!Several OT's interest me in mid to late rounds-Topou in third/fourth not the least!

Hey Matt,
Nice job...your blog is my favorite sports read! Hope the Newspaper industry treats you well this year. Anyhow, when I look at draft predictions I wonder about previous draft quality. Is there some kind of retrospective, analysis, etc. that covers the 49ers previous drafts in terms of who got drafted/when/for how much, did they play, did they play well, you know, that kind of stuff? I usualy read random references about this or that player with an extreme comment attached. Could be a lot of work and even cost you some friends but the review would be a good read coming from someone as credible as yourself. Feel free to cover no more than the last 20-30 years (LOL) - or maybe just the York years, or even just last year would be a good read. Thanks again for the job you do.

Razor,

After further review you might be on to something. Makes me now think how important Marvel Smith's health is, if he has no health issues in relation to his back then I think the 49ers need to sign him so it eliminates the whole need for a "reach" at OT in the 1st round.

Who is Matt?

Matt Maiocco is in his 14th year covering the 49ers. He has reported for The Press Democrat since 2000. He is a three-time winner of Pro Football Writers of America awards. Rotoworld.com ranked "Instant 49ers" as the No. 2 NFL team blog in the country in 2007. Maiocco has written two books, "Roger Craig's Tales from the 49ers Sideline" and "San Francisco 49ers: Where Have You Gone?" Matt can also be heard regularly on KNBR (680-AM) during the season. He is also been added this season as a regular guest on ESPN's "First Take."
