See bottom of this post for details.

The Kurt Warner Watch continues at
Warner is apparently getting a physical at Stanford. His agent says there will be no decision coming today.
"Nothing is going to happen tonight," said Mark Bartelstein, Warner's agent. "He's going to have to sit down and talk to his wife and me. We'll get through today and figure out what to do from there."
Now, it's back outside to stake out the gate, where Warner might re-enter the team's offices

UPDATE (4:06 p.m.) Warner arrived back here at the 49ers' team offices. He was driven by 49ers head athletic trainer Jeff Ferguson.
As they rolled up to the back gate, I ran alongside and motioned for Warner to roll down the passenger-side window. He mouthed, "I'm not talking." Or something that looks a whole like those words when said silently.
Through the fence, I could see Warner on the cell phone walking back into the building. He is wearing a peach-colored shirt and designer blue jeans.

UPDATE (4:39 p.m.): There's been another signing!
This time it's a player leaving the 49ers. Defensive lineman Ronald Fields has signed a two-year, $5 million contract with the Denver Broncos, ESPN is reporting.

Uh oh...they weren't feelin' the 49ers offer. Boo-hoo.
Ouch. I hope we did enough.
I'd imagine this involves them taking the Niners offer back to the Cards and just going from there. I hope we impressed him, but I can't say I'm surprised at all by this.
This isn't a surprise. The Cards have the edge all along. No matter what the 49ers offer, the Cards will get the last chance to beat or match. The casual fan's only hope is that they're too cheap to match.
He was probaly told he would have to compete for the job with Smith. He laughed a lot. Then said are you serious? Then probably said screw that....
Matt - have you placed a call to Shaun Hill to gauge his feelings (I'm sure he's thrilled!)?
If you actually read ESPN with any regularity, you will read that Warner's plan was to spend the day at 49ers headquarters then go back to Phoenix. Clearly, the Cards will have an opportunity to match.
Duh.
This is no surprise. There was no question in my mind that Warner would want to discuss it with his wife, give the Cards a chance to counter, etc.
However, I do not think the Cards will match anything. I think the Cards only get him back if he decides HE'S willing to compromise. They are ready to move on if they need to.
I also don't think it's unreasonable to imagine he'll hit a few other teams before deciding.
Eh, I won't be disappointed if Warner doesn't sign. The best thing that could happen is that he just retires. That would be a win for us and a big loss for the Cards. Shaun Hill has proved he can win and we risk the chemistry he and the team has developed by bringing in the expensive, one year solution named Kurt Warner.
Stick with Hill, draft a OLB/pass rusher with the first pick, OT in the second, RB in the third and then draft a developmental QB to groom for the future. Problems solved :)
Regardless, I support my team.
I am guessing that it might take 24 hours to see some of the results for a physical on a man that is 38 years old. As long as he is staying there in San Fransico, I still have hope we get him.
My guess is that this is not a good sign.
Matt! Get us some stakeout, cell phone spy photos!
Oh boy. Not talking. I hope Arizona doesn't match. What is the reason for the physical if he is not ready to come? Matt, can you help me understand?
I got a good feeling Warner is going to be a 49er. This is going to generate hope again for our team.
So the Niners flew him in to tell him that if he's healthy they'll give him whatever he wants. They must have decided that he's healthy enough, and offered him all he asked for, maybe even more. So now things are beyond the talking stage and into the deciding stage. Now KW is doing some soul searching, or maybe he's sending the numbers back to AZ and giving them a chance to match. We'll find out.
I'm sure we did our part. This reeks of agent leveraging.
Why are you guys reading anything in to this? That is a four hour physical. Wow. He hasn't even talked to anybody at the Niners yet.
Back to the charade theory?
This sucks, Rich in San Ramon and I have been checking this blog for the last 5 hours every 10 minutes and HES NOT GOING TO DECIDE?!?!?
Sounds like he is playing both sides, which is better for the Cards.
But I'd spend 20K on a plane ride to make AZ pay 8Mill more in cap space.
Warner spoke with Mike Singletary already. Then, he went to get his physical at Stanford. He just arrived, and apparently is speaking with GM Scot McCloughan right now. --Matt M.
Hi Matt,
What do you think the implications of signing Warner are for the "negotiations" with Alex Smith on a revised contract? Do you think the Niners view this as a way for Alex to learn underneath Warner for a few seasons so that a veteran can help Alex progress into a better caliber starting QB? Or do you think this spells the beginning of the end for A. Smith?
It just makes me think of the Linehan debacle. I hope that is nit the case.
Thanks Matt. But this peach colored shirt stuff--I dunno.
What is the reason for the physical if his agent is saying he is not ready to decide?
Matt, what is the feeling around HQ right now? Is it tight, loose?
Exactly Indy ! Warner has always wanted to stay in Arizona IF they will give him a good contract and show respect for what he has done for them.
His agent said that he will be talking tonight to Warner and the family but no decision will be made today.
I am sure that means that Warner will talk it over with his wife and his agent and then the agent will give the Cards one more shot at getting close to the Niner's offer.
It's in the Cards court and then it's up to Warner to decide. The Niners have done what they can and must wait for this to play out.
As I said all along I don't believe this will happen because it is just too god to be true.
( and Indy you must be holding back the tears because your guy smith would be gone if Warner signs. Unless Smith's agent has pictures of Scotty and Jed in bed TOGETHER, LOL !!! ).
I couldn't agree w/ you more. Something has to be said about team chemistry. A good example is seeing what the Niners did after J.T.O. was benched...and S-Dot Hill was put in...same team...SAME TEAM...diffrent QB.
And MM, you need to step your reporting game up...we need to know the BRAND of the jeans for all this to make any sense...True Religion or Diddy???
Matt with the blow by blow...I started running next to the car asking him to roll down his window...
Does our guy Matt have a set or what!! Regardless, this has been a hoot today, can't keep from this blog. fun stuff.
I now change my opinion, this is soley based on Warner wearing a peach-colored shirt. Send his a*s back to AZ.........
Question: Matt, what is the feeling around HQ right now? Is it tight, loose?
My response: I can tell you that outside, waiting for Warner to return from his physical, it was very windy. --Matt M.
This is a win-win for the 49ers regardless of what Warner does. If he used the 49ers as leverage to get the Cards to up their offer, that's a "win" because of the Cards will have been forced to pay more than they wanted, which may hurt them in resigning some of their other players. If he signs with the 49ers, that's a "win" because the 49ers get an upgrade at QB while taking Warner away from the NFC Champions. And, no one can say the 49ers didn't act decisively and go all out once Warner became in play, which has been a criticism in the past.
Yes, and speaking of chemistry--do these jeans pull down quickly in caqse he needs to expose his backside in the locker room ??
I keep coming back to the notion that Warner is not the kind of guy who's going to waste Mike Singletary's time playing out some leverage scheme. And if he doesn't sign, that's exactly what it will look like. So keep your hopes up folks and please let's have no bridge jumpers if he doesn't sign. We'll just proceed to smash his mouth next year and make him rue the day he trifled with Mike Effing Singletary!
Matt,I read that the 49ers asked Stafford really crazy questions at the combine. Like how does he feel about his parents divorse. Are the 49er brass nuts? What does that have to do with football?
TOP_CAT,
I can't believe all this hoopla about something that's not ever going to happen. It's all just a "dog & pony show" and for the 49ers to be wasting their time on a player who has no intention of signing is pathetic. Please, the 49ers need to be making every effort in getting an OT in FA. Now that's alot more realistic.
The sun will rise tomorrow if Warner decides not to be a Niner.
Clever use of your veiled expletives btw... I will be launching a few of those if the Niners decide to take a pass on Sanchez come April 25th.
Haha crappy fields is with crappy nolan again
My guess: 49ers offered him what he wanted. He'll go back to Cards, they'll come up to 25 mill or so and sign him. Hey Yummy - Yes, unfortunately, they are nuts.
Matt, will you get a chance to talk to any team officials today?
Hello Matthew,
I was wondering, is Kurt was still at the teams facilities?
Did the physical include a prostate exam? Inquiring minds want to know.
ESPN is reporting: The 49ers are open to changing their offense. Former 49ers quarterback Trent Dilfer, now with ESPN, said that is the word from directly from coach Mike Singletary.
Yummy, I'm no psychologist (except when attempting to diagnose some of the more troubled minds on this site), but I think those kinds of questions are designed to throw somebody off guard and cause stress to see how they handle it - like an unblocked blitzing linebacker might.
I wonder what the fall with the Smith negotiations is going to be from this? If we get Warner I couldn't care less if we resign Smith. Without Warner I am a little concerned.
Has Warner left the building, other reports have suggested this.
And any news if Warner plans on staying in the area is will he be heading back to Arizona?
Ron Fields...what an anonymous 4 years he just spent with us.
If he goes, then I doubt he signs with us.
Leverage move.
Crap.
Hey do we know drama or what? I like the prospect of Warner but honestly do you think he wants to uproot his family and move them to the left coast for a couple of years for a few dollars more, especially when he will be shelling out an exorbitant amount in state taxes. He may be a MVP quarterback but he is first a family man. That is why I don't believe there is any credence to signing with the 9ers. He is just endeavoring to squeeze a little blood out of the Bidwel turnip. I love SF but you got to figure Phoenix is a lot more stable than here for a family of eight.
His plans are to leave tonight, if he does with no contract (as he says he will), there will be no Warner in red and gold.
nice one yummy - got me still giggling
No dcsham,he was going to go back home and talk it over with his family about a possible move and then talk to his agent,no matter what the Niners offered him. The Cards will probably be given the chance to bring up their offer (after all,Warner never wanted to leave but just wanted his deserved payday and his respect,he wants to stay where he is ).
I would have been surprised if he and his wife and agent had their talks here and made a quick decision. He said he was going home after the trip, before he even came here.He is doing what he said he was going to do,as he usually does.
If the Cards owner is cheap enough to let him go then he may actually come here. I just don't think it happens because it is too good to be true.
But nice try Jed and Scotty and Sing !!! Very good !
Well,I still don't get what a parents divorce has to do with Stafford being a good football player.
I feel that we have this in the bag. Just because of this.... ESPN's Michael Smith reports that the Cardinals have no intentions of budging off their current two-year, $20 million offer to free agent Kurt Warner. Smith notes that Arizona has Karlos Dansby, Adrian Wilson, Anquan Boldin, and Darnell Dockett's contracts to worry about. They're not about to meet Warner's price.
Mick, a few more dollars! Like 8 million more dollars.
The Bidwells are notorious for screwing things up and being cheap, I could see them letting Warner go for a few Million. But this mainly looks like a leverage move. Which I can come to grips to if they actually do increase their offer. I would spend 20K and a few hours to get the Cards to raise their offer by 4 million a year.
Peach?? peach??
Don't know if to be more upset at Warner for wearing it or at MM for recognizing the color.
If Warner signs, can we fire Jimmy Raye and rehire Martz?
Please.
Pretty please.
If we re-hire Martz then Warner would retire. He can't stand the guy from all I hear (although Warner would probably not say a bad word about anyone in public.)
Matt, if the 49ers, and Warner come to an agreement on a contract, and how he fits into the teams offense, etc. Why is his agent saying nothing will happen today?
That doesn't mean anything. People say they're not spending any more money and then do it all the time.
It is, however, a real complicated situation for the Cards because of Matt Leinart.
They have a lot invested in him and he's basically just a millionaire spectator. In some ways the Cards would like to see Leinart on the field earning his paycheck and becoming the face of the franchise for the next decade.
On the other hand, Warner did the impossible. He got the Cards to the SB. If they let him walk away and Leinart doesn't produce (a very real possibility) it could get REALLY ugly in Phoenix (more so than usual).
If they didn't have a #10 pick waiting in the wings, this would be easy (sign Warner at all costs). The presence of Leinart , however, really muddies the water for the Bidwills.
Hey Matt, you didn't trip and fall down in the puddle did you? ha haha!
Matt -
Are they still in the building? I am exhausted.....
What was Brenda Warner doing the whole time he was at Stanford? Talking with coaches? Talking contract with the agent?
True Religion Or Diddy Jeans bah!-It's either Levi Strauss 501 button fly (USA vintage) rolled on the bottom or 86 'em back to AZ!!!! MATT-the notion of you running next to Warner's car trying to get an interview is somehow comedic and sad -thanks for trying so hard!!!
Matt-
What defensive free agents are we interested in pursing.
Right now the Offense is getting a new WR, a recycled FB, and the royal carpet treatment for a QB...what is going on for the defense?
Matt,
I confess my ignorance: is Fields the kind of signing the gets a supplemental draft pick?
Thanks!
I don't feel Fields is a big loss, he did not step up this year, his one big play was to casue the fumble to win the AZ game two years ago.
Balmer and/or Sopoaga should move to NT, neither showed much speed, athletiiscm or range of motion.
We need more on the DL.
