The NFL announced the distribution of 32 compensatory picks, including two to the 49ers.

Niners 2009 draft picks:
First round, No. 10 (10 overall)
Second round, No. 11 (43)
Third round, No. 10 (74)
Fourth Round, No. 11 (111)
Fifth round, No. 10 (146)
*Fifth round, No. 35 (171)
Sixth round, No. 11 (194)(184)
Seventh round, No. 10 (219)
*Seventh round, No. 35 (244)
(*compensatory picks can't be traded.)

The 49ers' additional picks will the 35th pick of the fifth round (No. 171 overall) and the 35th pick of the seventh round (No. 244 overall).
Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors, according to the NFL. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.
The 49ers' free agents lost in 2008 were Marques Douglas, Kwame Harris, Maurice Hicks and Justin Smiley. The free agents gained were Justin Smith and Bryant Johnson. Therefore, the 49ers' net loss was two.

Kwame Harris was not a loss. That was a gain. I feel so guilty!
Just the voice of your conscience speaking Monsieur Creamcheese!!!
Net gain is 1 when you factor the loss of our 5th last year for Briggs-gate.
That could force a decision between a FB or OL choice in the 4th now.
I'm disappointed,
Hmmm. So that is how they decide how many picks to give out?
You learn so much by drinking.. and reading.
Classic!
I hope our scouts have done their homework and pick us up some diamonds in the ruff with these picks.
Although the picks start at the end of the 5th round they're still additional picks non the less. As Razoreater pointed out this is where the 49er scouts earn their money & I can only hope they've done their homework.
Good News. The more picks the better. The more talent to evaluate the better. NFC West is ripe for the taking. With new coaches in Seattle, St Louis in transition, and Arizona, well, being Arizona, we have a chance. Bring them on, l say.
So do we get Mr. Irrelevant, or are there other compensatory picks after ours?
Chiefs have Mr. Irrelevant.
The big news of the week is this: http://tinyurl.com/cuz52j
All this banter will not matter unless communism is eliminated in the NLF.
Hey Matt come you are not covering the NFL's big wigs this week? I know there not assistant coaches...but without them.
THERE IS NO NFL!!!
looking at the list of Mr Irrelevants, its seems that Jim Finn had the most illustrious career. though in truth i only looked at look 3 guys. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr_irrelevant
Question: Hey Matt come you are not covering the NFL's big wigs this week?
My response: Times are rough in the newspaper biz. --Matt M.
Question: So do we get Mr. Irrelevant, or are there other compensatory picks after ours?
My response: The 49ers' ninth of nine draft picks is at No. 244 overall. The Chiefs have the final pick in the draft, No. 256. --Matt M.
Matt, you can't afford a $1400 ocean view room? Or a 23 dollar hamburger of $5.50 coke?
If this econ is headed where I think, the fat cats are in for their own comeuppance. One day they may have to even open their wallet to play a round of golf.
I was listening to the Dan Patrick Show the other day. You should have heard the "demands" of some of the owners about how their suite was set up...talk about rock stars.
I think we should draft a LS with one of our final comp picks. Jennings is great, but he can't last forever. He's in his 10th or 11th year.
Matt, If I'm calculating correctly, our sixth pick will be the 184th overall (not 194). Everything else looks spot on.
would be nice to pick up Percy Harvin in the second round or trade up to get him....
Percy Harvin and Chip have to be on the team....
During a televised press conference, one of the reporters asked Goodell about this issue. His excuse was the scheduling is done four years in advance because it's such a big deal.
I think it's hilarious when rich people pretend to be suffering along with the rest of us plebs.
what is really sadis that we have had a problem at RT since we drafted Kwame ---- dat is a long time.
you are not calculating correctly.
Comment: Matt, If I'm calculating correctly, our sixth pick will be the 184th overall (not 194).
My response: Upon further review, you appear to be 100-percent correct. Thank you. --Matt M.
What I think is hilarious is you don't have a job with out the "rich people", who worked their ass off and had the balls to become "rich". Take a look in the mirror and ask yourself one question. "why am I not rich?". Then when you are done with all your excuses. Ask yourself the same question again.
It sounds like you want the government to run the league?!?!
Hilarious is right. Do you have any idea of the logistics involved to do something like this meeting? And why not be rewarded for what they do? This is a highly successful business. And who do you think brought all of this to you?
Barney Frank and Lalaplooza Pelosi and Obama???
That's right sonney, those evil guys at Dana Point are living it up...while you and your son throw foam bricks at the tv wearing Joe Montana jerseys...The hypocrisy is putrid!
:)
Well then... since our 7th pick is at 219, if our 6th pick is at 194, there are 24 picks in between. Which is funny, since there are 32 teams in the league, and a few supplemental picks at the end of the 6th round.
Also, there shouldn't be 23 picks from our (end of the round) supplemental 5th (171) and our 11th pick of the 6th round.
Work it out for yourself. ;)
You're correct. The last pick in the fifth round belongs to Tennessee, a compensatory pick at No. 173. Then, the 49ers have the 11th pick of the sixth round. --Matt M.
Leave it alone. This blog is about the 49ers. Side comments are OK and welcome. Please leave the liberal/conservative diatribe for other forums.
I'll cut you right off before you start your first amendment harangue. Feel free to spew whatever you want out the window. We're not trying to censor you, we are hoping you'll extend to us the same common courtesy we've extended to you. We heard your comment, please move on.
Everyone says you can't pay Harvin 10th money. Stupid. You get a feared man around the end or dump off passes - a runner and a passer and a possible special teamer.
Spend 10 on a lazy fat boy and you just get a project.
Correction in last post - pass receiver.
I made a comment a couple days ago about MM reporting A.Smith was going to be released. I would like to rephrase that comment - MM did not say A.Smith would be released but reading MM blog i did get a feeling Alex Smith would not be part of the team in 09.
In my defense I did not insert any quotation marks in the statement, I would assume anyone that read the comment knew MM did not exactly say what I wrote.
But my opinion still is - YES, MM did give an impression that it was very likely A.Smith would not be a niner in 09, now we can argue language and vocabulary all day but the fact remains that the A.Smith contract story was not even close to a regular NFL player controversial story. There was never an inkling from MM that A.Smith would be a niner in 09 but more of a doubt if he would be a niner in 09. Which is why I question the reporting about A.Smith in the first place. I just didn't see a reason to doubt A.Smith would be a niner in 09. MM obviously did and I am still waiting for him to justify the thought.
"There was never an inkling from MM that A.Smith would be a niner in 09 but more of a doubt if he would be a niner in 09."
I looked back over some previous posts, and it seemed to me MM was usually in the middle. I agree at one point he was leaning towards Smith not returning, but that was at least partially based on what was said before the season -- namely, that if Smith didn't prove himself the starter he wouldn't return. I can put some quotes from old posts that show him performing what I would consider to be a fair analysis -- well before Smith restructured (if you like).
And I'm not trying to pick a fight. :)
Thanks...I needed that....
It look me about two minutes to find the key blog entries I've written about Smith in the past few months:

:) -no fight here - But how could Smith have proved himself as a starter before the season? - If i recall McGM said he wasn't goin to pay A.Smith starting money to seat on the bench, he also stated he had no doubt A.Smith was going to be a good QB in the NFL - isn't that last statement enough to suggest MCGM believes in A.Smith more than any other niner fan including the owner - I would think that statement alone would erase any doubt by MM that A.Smith won't be a niner........shouldn't MM had looked at the comments made by McGm and come to a conclusion there really isn't a story here?
Thanks - I am going back to do sum reading
Smith, of course, has experienced four different coordinators in his four NFL seasons. McCloughan said that experience will ultimately help him. (But it might not be with the 49ers.) – Did McGm say “But it might not be with the 49ers” or was it MM opinion?
Coach Mike Nolan, who had clearly come to the conclusion Smith was a big part of the team's problem, was fired on Oct. 20. – I would love to read where Nolan said this.
He said he'd accept a cut in pay. But when it comes time to hammer out the details would he (and his agent) take a deal for backup money with incentives?
– This is what pisses me off –
There was never a clue or anything at all that would suggest A.Smith was not going to restructure his contract. Don’t we have to look at the persoinality involved before we make those kind of assumptions. It is one thing if this was T.O its totally different and should be looked differently since this was A.Smith. He even said he would accept a pay cut- wasn’t that enough to stop doubting?
Variables that will determine whether Smith is back for a fifth try: – “But if he remains with the 49ers, you'd figure he would be either the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback.”
49ers GM Scot McCloughan said during training camp that quarterback Alex Smith would not be back with the team in 2009 if he did not head into the offseason as the proven starter.
-Now that we know he his heading into the offseason not as a proven starter
– What does that say about MM variables?
MM = “McCloughan: He wanted to draft Smith with the No. 1 pick in 2005 -- no doubt about. He says he still believes Smith will be a good NFL quarterback some day. But this is also a time when McCloughan might want to go in a different direction for the same reasons outlined above for the head coach.”
– That was MM opinion. After reading that again you should be thinking MM thought this was a good time for McGM to release A.Smith.
After numerous conversations over the past month with people in and around the 49ers, including Smith, all signs point to the 49ers making a concerted effort to retain Smith for at least another season
– MM did not convey this to us previously. I have never had conversations with people in and around the 49ers but I could easily see the organization would want A.Smith back as a niner because of the kind of personality he has. I mean the guy stayed around while injured, I wonder if there is anyone in that organization that does not like A.Smith.
I'm still hung up on your statement about how my boy S-DOT-Hill didn't do anything to deserve the starting job...wrong, just wrong.
oneniner -
Take a Valium and let the matter rest.
you know i am right. Apart from that game winning drive-that one pass intended for two receivers - which morgan jumped up to catch - i realy dont remember anything else he did. You just cant play horrible in 3 quarters and play well in one and expect to be crowned starter. OK - can you name one game last yr Hill played well in all 4 quarters?...even the game he played well the first half - he horrible the other half.......
no dude - there is still the final phase - which is when A.Smith would be the starting QB - then we can rest this.....:)........
MM = “McCloughan: He wanted to draft Smith with the No. 1 pick in 2005 -- no doubt about. He says he still believes Smith will be a good NFL quarterback some day. Without going point by point, I would say it seems like the biggest problem you have with MM is that you think he should be more overt with what is his opinion and what is fact. I personally have not had a difficult time removing one from the other -- and appreciate the insight and thoughts MM has, as a reporter working closely with the 49er organization. No one is infallible, and he has been wrong on some counts -- but as a general rule, I consider him to have more knowledge of the inner workings than anyone else on this blog, and because it's a blog, I would argue that it's his prerogative to report the facts, and then give his speculation on them. At any rate, Smith's back and competing for the starting job, which I know by now you are quite happy about. We'll see how it pans out. Can we move past the MM said this MM said that?
Does any QB play a flawless game? Of course not, a lot also rides on the performance of the rest of the offense; i.e. is the o-line protecting well, are the recievers catching/dropping passes, is the running game setting up the passing game? The bottom line is that Hill has won 7 out of the 10 games he's started, period. Of course, I could mention the Rams game, where he played outstanding through all 4 quarters. I think JTO even came in for him during garbage time, and when was the last time we've EVER seen the Niners be on the winning end of some garbage time??? But then again, it was the Lambs.
S-DOT-Hill had a better QB rating than the SB Champ QB Ben Worthlessburger, AND Jay Cutler at the end of last season. My point again...7 and 3 as a starter.
:) - True MM is the Masterniner - i believe in him - but we should still be able to critic him when wrong or "seem" wrong...right? - MM latest opinion is that Hill should be the starter because of the election on his blog and i guess because he ended the season last yr - i disagree......but you are right we can move past this for now.
dude 10 games does not get you anything in the NFL - does not get you a pay increase, does not get you endorsements, does not get yu to the probowl, does not get you to the hof......honestly i have never heard a player holding up 10 games as threshold to judge himself in the nfl.......plz dont start now....a full season is the requirement before you start comparing stats...that is why ratio's are irrelevant in hill's case.
I agree, it's your prerogative to critique in the same sense it's his to pontificate on his blog -- it just seems like we keep hearing a similar song in terms of MM and his opinion on Smith, that's all. I look forward to the QB competition -- I think it's going to be good, and a real test for both Smith and Hill, regardless of who comes out on top. Glad we could have a discussion without resorting to name calling! :)
Yer right, TWO games got S-DOT-Hill a pay increase, and the Niners starting QB job for '09! But, can you tell your audience why you feel Hill shouldn't get a full year to prove his worth, considering his resume thus far?
so i'm a history major. sue me.
The only flawless game I've ever seen a quarterback play was the Pats vs Jacksonville in the playoffs last year. The Jaguars didn't blitz once the entire game, preferring instead to sit back and wait for Brady to make a mistake. He didn't. Every single pass was on the numbers, and he finished 26-28 for 260 yards and 3 tds. The two incompletions were drops.
Ya know I'm usually not in agreement with oneniner but he does have a valid point. A few weeks ago I posted several times on MM's blog about the OBVIOUS in what the 49er should be looking for before Free Agency started & that was OT. I went on to mention that if they could shore up that lingering problem that's been going on for the last 3-4 years it would give the 49ers alot more flexibility in what they could do with the #10 pick including trading out of that spot to get multiple picks. I asked MM many times for his thoughts on that theory & not once did he answer my question. But when Marvel Smith came in for a visit last week THEN MM was more than willing to post an article on that same theory & what that could mean if the 49ers were to sign Smith which is EXACTLY what I said almost a month ago! My point is that MM is just a reporter...he reports that's what he does, nothing more nothing less. MM is not in the KNOW of everything that goes on at 4949 Headquarters, he's not on the 49er payroll so everybody needs to remember that. MM is not perfect & he doesn't have all the answers.
Why don't you look in the mirror and turn off Fox news, dude!? Put down your revised history book and take your head out of the sand! Turn off Fat's Limbaugh, Insanity Hannity, Pervert O'Reilley, Transvestite Coulter, and Stinkrum Ingram!
