This ends a six-day saga in which the 49ers made a big push to acquire the two-time league MVP. Warner and his wife, Brenda, flew to the Bay Area to meet with 49ers officials on Monday.
Warner, who turns 38 in June, made it clear from the beginning that his preference was to get a contract done with the Cardinals. On Tuesday, his agent, Mark Bartelstein, said as much when he noted that Warner's heart remains in
So now the 49ers are back to where they began.
They are not expected to pursue another veteran free agent to add to the competition for the starting job, and there is a feeling that it's a longshot they would take a quarterback at No. 10 in the draft.
They are still seeking a new contract with Alex Smith and expect him to compete for the starting QB job against Shaun Hill. The 49ers get together for the first time this offseason with new offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye for classroom work on Monday, March 16. Their pre-draft minicamp will take place at the end of that week.
Warner receives a two-year, $23 million contract with a $15 million signing bonus and base salaries of $4 million in both seasons, Bartelstein said.
That is a significant increase from the Cardinals' original, long-standing offer of two years, $20 million with $10 million guaranteed. The 49ers are believed to have offered Warner significantly more in both total package and guarantees.
Obviously, the 49ers and Cardinals meet twice in 2009 (schedules are released in the spring), so at least I'll have something to write about in the lead-up to those games.
Let's call this a wrap for now.
FREE-AGENCY UPDATE: Niners running back DeShaun Foster, whom the club has shown no interest in re-signing, is visiting the Bills today, reports the Buffalo News.
* * *

Someone's doing the happy dance.
And it's me.
poor jed
GIVE ME JEFF GARCIA AND/OR A HEALTHY ALEX SMITH
Good riddance. I'm just glad this whole saga is over and now we can focus on drafting a QB (Hopfully Nate Davis from Ball St is available in the 2nd round). Congrats to the Cards, now let's get busy on some draft predictions Matt!!
Insert that sagging horn sound you hear on the Price is Right when you blow it on a bid....
Thanks for the update. Can we all move on now and channel our energies and goodwill towards a Mark Sanchez draft day on April 25th?
I'm counting on Healthy Alex Smith. That's like an action figure. You have Injured Alex Smith with detachable shoulder....
CALL Kansas City about Tyler Thigpen, otherwise maybe Sanchez at 10 even thought the OT would be better. Hill is solid as long as he protects the football.
Thank you Kurt for ending this drama. I think it was a good move by SF trying to upgrade the QB position overall. We now need Alex Smith signed very soon or we have to look at Leftwich or some other quality QB's in the market.
Man, Jed better send Warner a bill for the plane. Unless his offer from the Cards is significantly more, the Niners are going to come out of this looking like fools.
I am happy to see this. We were able to drive up the price on the Cardinals. Take it to your division rival! I think John Parker Wilson would be a nice pickup in the 3rd or 4th round. Let him site for 2 years behind Hill and learn as much as possible. He played for 4 years in college (lots of experience), in a pro style offense.
This way the niners can bring in OL, DE and WR. They need play makers. OL and DE are priorties. All year niner fans complain about not having a pass rush. Well now is the time to get a stud pass rusher to go along with J. Smith, P. Willis and P. Harylson! Add a safety after that and this defense is now a top defense.
Nice no signing today niners.
If there is any hard feelings, I'm sure the Niners pass rush can work them out on the field next season.
At least now free agents know the niners are willing to pay for a player they want...
Lets start making some calls and get some free-agents in here...
Matt, how fast do you predict Condon gets this deal done?
Its about time, lets get back to 49ers football. Drive up the price a bit, maybe they don't get that one free agent they may have wanted now, who knows? I'm just glad we can move forward, start hill, draft a QB in the 4th round and take it to the Cards the way we did this last season. Beat them once, (should've been twice) so who really cares if they still have Warner, we have the better team right now!
49ers tards warner saga= OVER
Giants Dodgers Manny saga= OVER
This is great stuff!! Somebody here made the point that this puts the 49ers back on the map. It's tells the league that our new brash young Exec is not going to shy away from another SB title and he is not counting paper clips like his old man. This is great news Niners fans! High Five to Jed! High five for the org. Let's see what other kind of media buzz he can create for the SF 49ers! This was just a win win!!
Once again. SAY NO TO MARK SANCHEZ! He is a younger Shaun Hill. Good accuracy but limited arm strength. Do not want to build my franchise off of a right handed Matt Leinert. Not interested at all. As Sing infamously said, "Can't play with him, Cant win with them, etc." There are better FA QB's available. Not even gonna comment on the Tyler Thigpen comment... Sad sad 49er fans.
I think our front office knew from the beginning that this was a likely outcome, and figured messing with the cards was worth a plane ride and a stretch limo. Not that they wouldn't have taken Warner if he had actually wanted to leave.
Interesting diversion, and they sure are doing a good job of entertaining us in the off-season. Now, gentlemen, about our pass-rush. . .
Now THAT is a LOT of guaranteed $$$$$$$$!!!!!
Hey Matt
I love reading your work, you and Barrows are seriously top notch. I have a question about the 49ers that really has never had an answer. Why does Scot McCloughan keep getting a free pass? I can't understand why he isn't under fire by the organization. His drafts have been marginal at best, same to be said about his free-agent acquisitions. We still haven't solved the problems at Qb,WR,Safety,Pass Rush, and offensive line. Our corners are ok, but Walt Harris is getting up there in age and it doesn't look like we have any suitable replacement.I just don't know what this guy has done to keep his job or what is preventing the 49ers from bringing in someone to oversee the football operations. It doesn't seem McClughan has any method or direction in building this team I feel year after year we have the same question marks. Thanks for all your hard work.
I think this means Scott and Mike will be looking a little harder at QB's in the mid to late rounds of the Draft now. What's your opinion Matt? Where do they go from here? Who looks like a late round Gem and who's left on the market that's noteworthy? At the very least we need another camp arm or two....
I do not like Curt Warner, never did, I knew from the start of what his intentions were. We just wasted money on him. Valuable money that could be paid on other talent. I just dislike him worse.
Warner really wasn't a fit for this team, without good wr's this would've been the Kurt Warner that struggled in NY. I'm all for letting Hill start and taking a QB in 3rd or 4th. Are there any good FA safeties out there, now would be a smart time to bolster the secondary.
Matt,
Where do the 49ers go from here?
I'm ok with this. I want to see Singletary's vision carried out with this "Power run" team. Warner would have been a 1 or 2 year stop gap type player. For the long term this is better for us.
Oh well, nice try. I'll be all the more excited to put him on his back when we play against the Cards this season.
Offensive tackle at #10, trade back up to grab Larry English with our 2nd pick.
wz up with a free safety?
These are not your father's 49ers as it takes a franchise to attract upper echelon free agents. Yes, build through the draft and plug holes with capable free agents but the 9ers must draft better. Not that they have been bad, it's just that they haven't been good enough. It seems that the really good teams (e.g., the 9ers with Walsh) have a killer draft every 5 years or so. I'm still waiting.
Just wanted to know if you can find out what the niner's were offering KW. How much more (if thats the case) he turned down to say with AZ?
BTW....first time commenting but long time reader. I appreciate the work you do in keeping us informed and up to date.
Check it out, now we have that $14 mil per year to add depth, build thru the draft, get a OT and DE/OLB, add a RB to compliment Gore, there we go, Hill showed he can win!! Quick question, anybody think Thomas Clayton can play a part in that role, I've liked what i've seen in preseason games with Clayton?
There are no quality free safeties available...Goldston, Roman, and Williams will compete for the starting job. Upper hand goes to Goldston.
why are we trying to trade for cutler???
Good.
You're the man Shaun Hill. Continue where you left off and let's win the weak division.
Hotrod they go exactly where they said they will go. Smith and Hill compete for the job, and they draft a rookie.
Matt and everyone else,
Call me a skeptic, but I'm just worried about Shaun Hill. Teams now how game tape of him. Once they start to gameplan towards his weaknesses, can the 49ers potentially regress this season? I am very appreciative of his effort, but he just doesn't have much upside and that scary.
Let's draft a defensive stud at 10 so he can knock Warner into retirement... After all that, AZ didn't move away from the 23 mil they offered and they're not going to move on Boldin. Give us a sick D Scotty!
There were plenty of cons with this deal to start (even though I was hoping it would happen), so I don't feel broken up about it.
I'll just look forward to smearing the field with Warner a couple times this year :-)
ATL49er4Life - you speak much truth.
Hilarious. For a plane ride and a dinner, York just took 9 million off AZ's cap over two years. Not bad. I guess the Cardinals don't have much confidence in Matt Leinart.
Ha Ha
Cardinals took our bait.
SUCKERS!!!!
Nice, glad it's over, time to saddle up S-Dot! Extra motiviation for the D to bring the pain when they face the Cards.
Sigh of relief. Time to move on.
Matt, Did they make any changes with Boldin's contract as part of Warner's deal?
I'm not worried. He's proved he's a leader, a winner and has the respect of his teammates. Now if Alex Smith somehow starts...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKj2fWtSFqg
Brilliant piece from Jim Trotter: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/jim_trotter/03/04/49ers/index.html?eref=T1 - McClueless is a horrible personnel guy and GM. He still hasn't found a QB or WR, the D is stacked with free agent's, and has missed horribly on draft picks. Welcome to another season of mediocracy people.
Question: Did they make any changes with Boldin's contract as part of Warner's deal?
My response: No. --Matt M.
The same McClueless that stood up on the table and demanded that we take Patrick Willis, while Nolan disagreed?
The same McClueless that just raised the price for the Birdies to sign Warner, knowing that they have a bunch of other key players that want to get paid too and want to jump ship?
The same McClueless that fired Nolan, promoted the right guy in Singletary who ended up installing a much needed identity, while going 5-4 as HC?
The same McClueless who's defense ended up ranking the best in the West at 13th last year?
The same... Well I think you see where this is going.
Move on Niners, pursure a Right Tackle, call Barnes... There are also veteran corners out there that would upgrade from Walt Harris.
Why not try and get Garcia? He loves it over here...I am not bummed that we didn't get Warner. I am just glad we increased his price. I hope we have the pass rush to punish him the two times we see him next season.
Thanks for the blog Matt. What in your opinion will the 9ers now do with the money they were willing to pony up for Warner? There doesn't seem to be any takles or pass rushers worth the $$$.
Well so far i give the 49ers a F in Free Agency. Im not saying we should have signed KW but not even attempting to go after TJ Houz. or some of the other players that would fill in gaps in our weak areas. I (and obviously Sing) doesnt believe that Hill is good enough to be a full-time starter but understand that there is no other FA answer. Where do we go now? Jason Taylor? Drew Bennett?
Yeah Randy, the same McClueless that has drafted 2 Pro Bowlers in 35 picks. The same McClueless that whiffed on Alex Smith. The sames McClueless that has a revolving door of FA WR busts. The same McClueless that hasn't sniffed a playoff game or winning season as a VP of PP or GM. The same...Well I think you see where this is going. I'm glad you are satisfied with losing seasons and stupidity in the front office.
C'mon now, anyone with football knowledge knows that when it comes to the Warner's, its Brenda and her hairdo that pulls all the strings. She is the one that didn't want to leave Arizona she's the one that offered the Cards a discount, and ultimately, she is the one that took less the our 9er's offer. We don't need Kurt to win the NFC West. Now, let's work out a trade for Tyler Thigpen.
The same McClueless that traded up in the 1st to get future stud LT Joe Staley a pick before the Ravens were going to select him.
The same McClueless that signed Takeo Spikes to help Willis on the interior.
The same McClueless that drafted some young stud WR's. They aren't your big names, but who was Brandon Marshall? Who was Wes Welker?? My point being the 49ers have som diamonds in the rough that could be very good before they even enter their prime.
McCloughan isn't perfect by far. But he has the 49ers on the up and up which is key for any franchise.
This is Scotty Mac's 2nd full season as a GM, gotta give him a little more time.
Matt, before FA started, the GM projected four to six free agent acquisitions. As of now there is a total of one (not counting 08 team members) -- Brandon Jones. If Evans resigns with WAS what are the remaining options out there?
There is nothing brillant about this article. It's somebody trying to make somebody else look bad. Big deal. Who doesn't do that now days in the press. I don't think you can gauge what is happening now with what's happened in the past. It's just not intelligent and shows a lack of depth of the writer.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/jim_trotter/03/04/49ers/index.html?eref=T1
If you mention Tyler Thigpen and the 49ers in the same sentence ever again...
You Should Get Banned!
YEAH! WOO HOO!
Like I really wanted to spend $30 mill on that guy, besides, the cardinals, didn't get anything they didn't already have, except maybe a little more common sense!
The only reason there was ever a "saga" is because of the dreamers who actually thought there was a chance Warner would come here. I knew he wouldn't sign with us and I'm fine with that, I didn't want the old man anyway. For the money he was asking, we are much better off without him. I'm looking forward to a year with a more experienced Shaun Hill and a healthy Alex Smith. Between these two guys we'll be fine, count on that. Haters will be haters, but I'm living in the real world and I'm optimistic we will go to the playoffs with either Smith or Hill. That's a very realistic possibility, whether the "Negative Nancys" choose to accept it or not. We could be A LOT worse off. We have a proven winning QB who has done a solid job for us, and another guy who is still very young with a good head on his shoulders and loads of potential. Hill may not be a star but he is dependable and a great guy to have on your team, whether he's starting or as a backup. All Smith needs is the right oppurtunity and things to fall into place, which should come easily with Nolan gone. With a little experience, proper coaching, and a good supporting cast he has the chance to be a fantastic QB for years to come. Be thankful for what you have guys.
Comment: before FA started, the GM projected four to six free agent acquisitions. As of now there is a total of one (not counting 08 team members) -- Brandon Jones.
My response: They've signed two free agents: Jones and Moran Norris (Lions), with an offer on the table to Demetric Evans. --Matt M.
ok, you got me. I listed Norris as a former 9ers without thinking about it. But what I was trying to ask is other than Evans, who else is there that the 9ers are interested in?
Gotta remember Randy, it was Nowin making all those call prior to last year -- well, its really only this year, because we all now that Nowin was still making all the decisions last year until he was fired.
Excellent piece by Jim Trotter in SI with the title "QB Chase Magnifies Ineptitude of Niners Front Office". Our beloved 49ers ARE a laughing stock. Jed the boy-king, McSpineless, and the reverend Mike are the three stooges without the laughs! As I have implored in the past, watch the team on TV, but do not renew season tickets and boycott the stadium! STOP being lemmings! The ONLY way to force Denise DeBartolo's hand is to see an empty Candlestick EVERY Sunday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good for Kurt. Good for the Cardinals. And certainly not the end of the world for the 49ers. Warner used the 49ers but the Cardinals had to pay for his new-found leverage. The best thing of all? Boudin just sits there and takes all of this in.
This is fantastic news. That had trouble sritten all over it from the start.
The biggest problem for Niner fans is this: Bill Walsh. Everything is compared to him. Sorry. Lightning usually doesn't strike twice (sometimes not even once).
Regarding SM, ATL49er4Life is pretty accurate here. Look at the Cards. I hear all this BS about their greatness. It's laughable. I live there. They're actually pretty stupid.
Their Gm (Rod Graves) has been there since 1997 (in various capacities). This is the team that passed on local stud Terrell Suggs (who wanted to play for them) to draft Bryant Johnson and Calvin Pace (neither of who is with them anymore).
Passed Brian Urlacher to take Thomas Jones, who was a bust in AZ. before going to TB, the Bears and the Pro-Bowl.
This is a team that struck gold in that Adrian Peterson slipped to their spot at #5, only to reach for OT Levi Brown.
Brown's been somewhat of an underachiever, Peterson is, well you get the picture.
The only reason they have some good young players is:
1. Dennis Green, who drafted guys like Larry Fitzgerald, Karlos Dansby and Darnell Dockett, among others.
2. They almost consistently draft in the top ten year after year. It's hard, in that circumstance, not to hit some winnners, even if you're stupid.
Lighten up, be realistic, and put the halcyon days of Walsh and Company in your memory bank.
It's like when the greatest race horse of all time, Secretariat died. His owner, afterwards said:
"be thankful for what you had and you go on looking for another one, which you know you'll never find, but that's what you do."
Keep "looking" but stop comparing the present to the past. If you don't you will almost surely live in a continual state of disappointment.
Question: But what I was trying to ask is other than Evans, who else is there that the 9ers are interested in?
My response: I'm not keeping any secrets from you. As I learn it (from multiple sources, if possible), I report it. --Matt M.
Oh, no doubt.
That's why it's funny when the misinformed around here want to blame McCloughan for everything when, in reality, Nolan was the "trigger" man up until last year. It's hard to blame McCloughan when his FIRST year as GM was only last year.
Talk about being Clueless...
You mean Kurt Warner used the Niners to negotiate a better contract? NO WAY! Hahahahahaha! I hate to say I told you so, but it is what it is.
As for McClueless NoClueghan, here are three reasons why he's been a horrible GM:
1) In the 2008 draft where NoClueghan was the "triggerman," he took duds like Kentwan Balmer and Chilo Rachal over a potential star in DeSean Jackson (who was right in his backyard at Cal). In fact, only one player from this draft class has flashed any sort of potential and Josh Morgan was taken in the 6th round.
2) NoClueghan could not close the deal on his top choices for the OC position and settled for Jimmy Raye, the 9th candidate who nobody else had on their radar.
3) Even if you want to place most of the blame on Mike Nolan for the team's struggles over the past 4 seasons, part of the blame still rests on NoClueghan's shoulders since he was VP of Player Personnel before being elevated to GM. In the past 4 seasons, the 49ers have been below .500 each of those years.
Wow...I don't get how everyone is all of the sudden down on the niners front office...chill out a little...take some emotion out of it. They did everything right! It just so happens that he chose them and not us. The niners didn't beg him or grovel at his feet, the just made him a sound offer! Its business, deal with it! It would have been great to have Warner for 2 years but its not the end of the world!
Used? How? This is big boy business people! cmon!
I love my other fanmates but sometimes, geez, your lunacy makes me ashamed!
It is not about living in the past, but about looking forward and seeing complete incompetence. Instead of offering 25+ million to a 38 year old QB, why not offer a contract to a top young GM like Pioli or a Wolf/Parcells/Holmgren type to try and resurrect this wreck. Even the legend Bill Walsh knew that he needed help and brought in John Ralston and John McVay, two experienced football men. Instead the 49ers have Jed the boy-king, McSpineless, and the reverend Mike. The 49ers and their fans deserve better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Correction -- the laughing stock is some of these whiner fans acting like Chicken Little's. Pretty embarrassing, really...
It was a win win for the 9ers. If Warner agreed, they would have a veteran QB and leadership for the team. The 9ers made Arizona cough it up and use alot of there cap money to sign this guy.
I believe the 9ers did what they did knowing there was a good chance he'll stay in Arizona, make them pay, and the 9ers can move on to building the O line and pass rush. Mr. Warner is going to have a huge bullseye on him next season, and I would not be surprised he retires, especially if he gets hurt.
I feel GOOD about this now.
Glad that it's over, and I think the Niners did a good job in getting the Cards to spend $9M more in guaranteed money.
May not seem like much, but it still hits their cap.
Just say no to Stafford and Sanchez. Take a chance on a Fresno State QB Brandstater in the later rounds.
Let Shaun Hill PLAY!
Traj
Randy get a grip, you are making yourself out to be an extreme McClueless apologist. Who scouted the players for NoWin? Who made recommendations to NoWin on who to draft? Who made recommendations to NoWin on FA's? Oh wait, thats right, it's MCCLUELESS!!! You would love to place all the blame on that idiot NoWin wouldn't you? NoWin was an idiot; McClueless is a moron. Period.
It seems to me, and I didn't think so at the beginning, what Matt says is really the truth on the Warner situation. The 49ers really went after Warner and if the money figures are in any way near the truth, the team thought he would either fit the new system MS wants to bring to the offense or MS wanted to open the offense up a little more than originally thought.
But either way it's mute now. Except, even though Hill said he wasn't distracted by the possibility Warner could come to the 9ers, that's hard to believe. I remember when Montana was at the top of his game, Walsh went after Young and brought him to the team. It definitely bothered Montana. And Montana was a future HOF QB who succeeded in almost every pressure situation on the field. But Walsh's off field pick up of Young upset Montana until he left the 49ers. Montana had trouble with the pressure off the field.
Now my only wonder is if the Young situation upset Montana that much, how could it not bother Hill who has maybe 1/4 of the skills of Montana. And not nearly the confidence of Montana. Will it seem to Hill the 9ers really don't have that confidence in him? Will it make him constantly look behind him to the bench, like Montana did? I hope MS gives Hill the confidence he'll need so we can see the complete Shaun Hill next year! Come on MS, give Hill what he needs! I think you can!
I guess will just have to see.
We've signed 4 FA's so far. Spikes, Rossum, Norris, Jones, all of which i'm pretty happy about. Especially Norris and Spikes, I think those are 2 players WE NEED and will see results from!
[[In the 2008 draft where NoClueghan was the "triggerman," he took duds like Kentwan Balmer and Chilo Rachal]]
Balmer was no worse than most of the other first round defensive linemen. He may be a dud, but we won't know for two more years.
And Chilo will be a pro bowl guard if he doesn't get hurt. Probably as soon as 2010.
I think they should have gone after Pioli. That said, if you don't think a significant percentage don't live in the past, then we've been reading different things.
Like those that were suicidal that the WCO wouldn't be the offense going forward. About how Walsh's name is constantly brought up.
That said, relax. Reread my post. The Cards are the essence of incompetence (I just gave you some of their greatest hits there). If THEY can reach the SB, there's hope for EVERYBODY!
Randy in Santa Rosa is right. You guys are the ones who are clueless, not him. So quick to judge. Balmer, Rachal, and DeSean Jackson have been in the league a total of ONE season. You have no idea how they will pan out over the long-term. Once again, too many idiot fans who don't look beyond the surface and don't understand the game of football. Did you personally scout Rachal? How do you know he will be a bust? How can you hate on Raye without giving him a chance? Were you present during the interview process? How do you have any idea if he's a bad fit? Once again, so quick to judge. Everyone needs to realize that Mike Nolan was 95% of the team's problems, and now he is gone, and we have nowhere to go but UP. Some of you guys just need to relax and give people a chance to succeed. Have a little confidence and quit being so negative. Maybe the guys in the front office actually DO have a clue what they're doing. Only time will tell.
Here is a little more details on MM' scoop - Sounds like the two deals are very similar in rate:
Washington Redskins free agent defensive end Demetric Evans is in a relatively enviable position as the San Francisco 49ers and the Redskins are both in contract talks with him, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network. Per Schefter, the prospective deals would be two years in length in the neighborhood of $4 million.
Evans is expected to make up his mind by Friday.
Im glad he's staying with the cardinals we dont need 2 waste our money on warner..atleast the cardinals had 2 up their offer...
Should the Niners pursue Bertrand Berry???
Now that Warner thing is done. What is up with D.Anderson from the Browns or is that something that may come up next month during Draft week.
Matt any idea what Cutler would cost? I'd give up a 2nd rounder for him. Just using that as a benchmark b/c of the Cassell trade.
I wasn't counting those guys - they shouldn't count as "free agent acquisitions" -- they should have been resigned before FA even started!
Warner signs with the Cardinals...
Ahhhh "Birds fly, Bees make honey, Bears shite in the forest, etc. etc. etc.
Warner at his Press Conference said the 49ers did make an offer but for a couple of reasons it wasn't the right fit. He decide on his flight home to make a deal with the Cards.
The 49ers management can spin this anyway they like. However we all now know we don't have a QB or they wouldn't have tried to sign him.
Now that the Warner episode is over, I hope the 9ers look totally to the future. They started with MS. And now they have to bring to the team what HE needs in players to install what HE needs to make us winners again. The team MUST give him the chance to prove his case that he can bring the team out of the Nolan exodus to a new footing of stepping into the playoffs.
I for one did not believe in MS. but in tlaking to some who have a different take on MS I believe he should have the chance to make the change that's needed.
I hope McC and Jed let MS have a big say in what transpires with the pick up of players. I don't know if they have to this point. But it seems that McC could be on the line this next year and wants in the worst way to show some success. But McC was instrumental in signing MS to the HCing job. He must have believed that MS could make the change for the team that was needed to make it a winner.
Let's let MS put into place what he needs. Then he can truly show if he can do the job. And it may take a couple of years. Or maybe not.
Then can say, when all the proof is in, he was the man or not. But THANK GOD the Nolan disaster is behind us now! Let's rejoice in that alone until MS does his handy work!
Have a beer and celebrate! The wicked Nolan is gone!! MS is starting a NEW phase in the 9er history! Give the guy a chance. He's been a winner up until now! If you don't believe it, he has a SB ring to show you! And also the certificate of being one of the best ML in the history of the NFL! Celebrate the new beginning!
I don't get it. Why would an OC rather move to a frozen bombed-out hellhole to coach a winless team than come to SF and work for the 49ers? Why would a quarterback leave millions and millions of guaranteed dollars on the table to stay in a scorching desert. There must be somthing unattractive about us lurking below the surface, but I just can't figure out what it is.....
One of Warner's BIGGEST reasons to stay in Phoenix was his family (wife and seven kids). That's a big reason why, especially at the end of his career.
Hey Too Sweet, care to put your money where your mouth is? I bet the Niners don't make the playoffs next year and are 7-9 at best. I'm not just looking at this past year. I'm looking at NoClueghan's entire record since he's been here. And yes, I did personally scout Chilo Rachal. I went to the Senior Bowl and saw firsthand how underwhelming Kentwan Balmer was (especially since he pulled up lame shortly after arriving in Mobile last year). I had a beer with NoClueghan at the Senior Bowl and he's a very nice guy. Unfortunately, he continues to make too many poor football decisions.
Comment of the day! Well said.

is that so? you went through a lot of Rachal's tapes did you??? Did you go to his pro day and watch him work out??? Don't act like you are a professional scout please.
I always find it interesting that so many people tend to bash Scot McCloughan for his recent drafting and then proclaim that the 49ers shoul've tried to get Scot Pioli. I think Pioli is a tremendous GM but I think McCloughan is as well. Piloi is significantly better? Really? Here's a look at Pioli's success since McCloughan has been with the 49ers.

Can we please end the charade with Scott McClueless. I strongly suggest if we do not get to the playoffs, we fire him, we hire Mike Holmren.
Glad your'e happy we're going nowhere again. yeah, I'd do a happy dance too that I root for a losing team and we give our division away. Mike Holmgren in 2010 please!
