The 49ers have picked in six rounds. Why haven't they picked an outside linebacker? Why haven't they picked an offensive tackle?

Well, the 49ers had the chance to pick an offensive tackle that could have filled that need. With two picks in front of them in the first round, the 49ers had decided on either receiver Michael Crabtree or tackles Eugene Monroe and Michael Oher.

The Jaguars took Monroe at No. 8, and the Packers selected B.J. Raji with the ninth pick. The 49ers didn't have to give it much thought before selecting Crabtree over Oher.

When asked if the 49ers thought about moving back into the first round to select the dropping Oher, Singletary said they were unable to do it. "It would've cleaned us out on the back end," he said.

Singletary said the 49ers opted against selecting a tackle or an outside linebacker in the five rounds after that because they did not see anyone at those positions that would've served as an upgrade. So the 49ers selected players they deemed as better fits at running back (Glen Coffee), inside linebacker (Scott McKillop), quarterback (Nate Davis) and tight end (Bear Pascoe).

Singletary said the team would look at the board and either the players at OLB or OT that they may have wanted had already been selected. The players available "did not fit into what we're doing," he said.

So the 49ers have Parys Haralson and Manny Lawson at outside linebacker. Behind those player is not a lot of depth.

Said Singletary, "I'm confident somehow, someway, we'll get what we need."

Looks like LB depth will come from other teams cast offs.

Niners on the clock.

Curtis Taylor FS LSU

There will be some UDFA's well worth looking at-once again Franz Joseph at LB;Mitch King DL;Dominque Johnson CB:will Murtha go undrafted?

How about Cal's Zack Follett with our last pick? He is still undrafted.

Well I liked their picks, but you are right. If the Niners don't improve in REALITY at pass protection next year we will be in trouble. 194 sacks in four years doesn't make for great QB play. And yes if we don't improve at rushing the passer we will still be an average defense. We still need more pieces, but I think we have the right Big Piece, Coach Singletary.

Maybe it's Ahmed Brooks.

Fans may seem disappointed we didn't get a Tackle or pass rusher, but the draft really thinned out after the 2nd/3rd round.

I approve of their approach -- take the best player available that serves a need, but don't bother on anyone they don't think would help. It's easy for us to play "armchair-GM", but consider how many teams (except Denver) traded back repeatedly in this draft. Many team were in "steer clear" mode.

We're going to have to hope that Marvel stays healthy and if not, that Snyder can carry the load at RT. We'll still be in the same market next year unless something happens in a trade or someone steps in from out of no where.

Only pick I was left scratching my head on is the TE....while he sounds like a blue-collar guy and a great blocking TE, seemed kinda high to take...well, a 3rd-string blocking TE. But I trust he will be a bigger asset than it may appear now.

I strongly approve of Crabtree, Coffee and Davis.

Of course you never know how things are going to work out. But Everette Brown fell into McCloughan's lap, as did Michael Crabtree, and he didn't pull the trigger. Obviously Carolina felt that Brown was worth next year's first round pick. Either they were right, or McCloughan was. I guess that if Brown had been an inch taller and 10 pounds heavier, he would have met McCloughan's criteria. I know this - that if Brown becomes a premiere pass rusher, as his highlight reel suggests, I'll remember this decision, and I'll remember that there was the opportunity to draft somebody who might have transformed our team, and McCloughan decided that he didn't measure out to his specs.

On the other hand, if Brown doesn't amount to much, then McCloughan made a good call, and we'll enjoy having another first rounder next year. But that was a true position of need and I'm convinced that we should have pulled the trigger.

i have those same feelings.....and i do not wnat to trade the first pick back to pick up Peppers......or do I?
