The 49ers enter the day with six picks. Among the positions they would like to hit: OLB, RB, DB, OL, DL . . and, maybe, QB.
The 49ers' remaining picks are . . .
Round 3, No. 10, No. 74 overall
Round 5, No. 10, No. 146 overall
Round 5, No. 35, No. 171 overall
Round 6, No. 11, No. 184 overall
Round 7, No. 10, No. 219 overall
Round 7, No. 35, No. 244 overall
When asked about his strategy for Sunday, 49ers GM Scot McCloughan said: "There has to be the value of the pick there. If we have to trade again, we'll trade again. There's no reason why we wouldn't trade up so we can go and try to get someone that's sliding our way. But we want to have good football players and the value will be there. I feel good about it and there's going to be good players taken tomorrow that end up being good players in the NFL and we have to make sure to identify the right ones and take them."

And here's my ridiculously irrelevant third-round mock (probably the first and last of its kind):
1 (65) Lions: OT Jamon Meredith (
2 (66) Rams: TE Jared Cook (
3 (67) Chiefs: LB Lawrence Sidbury (
4 (68) Bears: DE Jarron Gilbert (
5 (69)
6 (70) Bengals: RB Shonn Greene (
7 (71) Raiders: DE Stryker Sulak (
8 (72) Jaguars: WR Juaquin Iglesias (
9 (73) Patriots: LB Kaluka Maiava (USC)
10 (74) 49ers: RB Andre Brown (
By the way, in my Round 1 mock, I had nine direct hits - a personal low. But 28 of my first-round picks were selected in the first round. The only ones I missed were Alex Mack (I took him out of my first round at the last minute), Donald Brown, Eric Wood and Kenny Britt.

On Feb. 21 when I was at the NFL scouting combine, news broke of Michael Crabtree's stress fracture. That morning, I wrote a blog entry, "Might Crabtree fall to 49ers at No. 10?" Wish I had remembered that Friday when I constructed my mock draft. (By the way, I wrote that day that Crabtree was the only receiver the 49ers would take at No. 10. Two months later, I do believe that was indeed the case.)

No Michael Johnson?
That's what I was thinking, struby. If Johnson is there, there's no way the Niners pass on him, right? He seems like a beast.
Matt, I found this very interesting "snipet" on CBS Sportsline by Pete Prisco and was wondering if you had heard this or can you maybe (or hopefully) confirm this or shoot it down? Please! The last line: Some in the organization didn't even want him.
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/story/11667443
Analysis: He hasn't run. He's shorter than expected. He's a diva. Good luck. Some in the organization didn't even want him.
BodyRocker:
Just for the record, Prisco praised the Raiders for taking Heyward-Bey....take anything that guy says with a grain of salt. The consensus around the country is that the 49ers stole Crabtree at #10(many experts had Crabtree as the number 1 prospect overall). I actually tried to do a backflip when they picked him...that's how excited I was.
Matt:
What about Jarron Gilbert from San Jose St? Perhaps the Niners snag someone from right out of the back yard in the Bay.
Stryker Sulak !!! Classic !! LOL !!
I'd be jazzed with Andre Brown.
Well I am 0 for 2 in predictions but we got Crabtree so it's okay to be wrong, here is what I hope for on Sunday (& I hope we use all our picks):
Pick 74 (Rd. 3)
Lawrence Sidbury (DE)
Pick 138 (Rd. 5)
Kory Sheets (RB)
Pick 171 (Rd. 5)
Joel Bell (OT)
Pick 184 (Rd. 6)
Nate Davis (QB)
Pick 219 (Rd. 7)
Josh Mauga (ILB)
Pick 244 (Rd. 7)
Terrence Knighton (DT)
I can't remember the last time I felt so excited about a 9er draft pick. I stood up and started clapping.
Ninerbob I like your first four picks for day 2. I would take Bell at 138 as I'm certain a lot of teams are on to him and hope Sheets will still be there at 171.
Names to keep in mind Henry Melton DE and Roy Miller DE. A little bias here but they are very good football players and Melton is an untapped talent as he was a RB for his first 2 years. James Casey TE and George Hypolite DT might be worth taking if still around although Casy will be gone by 4th rd.
I consider yesterday a big success. We came away with Crabtree, one of the top 3 on most boards, plus at a position we need help, and an additional #1 for next year. McC has made some good picks in Rounds 5 and 6, so today has promise as well.
Comment: Stryker Sulak !!! Classic !!
My response: Thank you. Yes, I was pretty proud of that pick. --Matt M.
RK What good picks in rounds 5 or 6 has McCloughan made besides Haralson?
You know what I have to say about that CBS sportsline article. They gave the Raiders Darius Heyward Bey a better grade than Crabtree. I'm pretty sure that proves the validity of their report. lol they're idiots
RK YOU WERE RIGHT HES HAS DONE A DECENT JOB IN THE LATE ROUNDS.
I would hope we would look for a db in the later rounds too. Although, for some reason I get the feeling that Scot is going to try to sign a veteran db FA after cutdowns.
Glenn Coffee, spot on Matt. I like him a lot.
Josh Morgan was a 6th rounder last year.
Rounds 5 and 6: Fields, Haralson, Walker, Hudson, Brown, Clayton, Morgan.
