Here is a list of undrafted free agents who have agreed to contracts with the 49ers, according to their agents.
Kory Sheets, RB, 5-11, 208, Purdue
The fastest running back at the combine with a 4.39 in the 40. He rushed for more than 3,300 yards in his career, along with 4,944 all-purpose yards. Sheets has breakaway speed, scoring 48 touchdowns in four seasons. He can also be a factor as a kickoff-return man. The 49ers brought Sheets in for a visit three weeks ago as part of their background check. Sheets reportedly had difficulty with the Purdue coaching staff, beginning with a brief benching in 2007 for a fumble problem. He made some critical comments after a loss to Northwestern, and was banned from speaking to the media for the remainder of the season. NFLDraftScout.com ranked him as the 11th-best running back - just one spot behind Glen Coffee. Mel Kiper Jr. ranked him No. 13.
Alex Boone, OT, 6-7, 328,
If Boone can get his act together, there might be a place for him in the NFL. He struggled against the speed-rushers of
Ended his career with 24 consecutive starts at defensive end. He recorded 8.5 tackles for loss, and six sacks as a junior, but his production dipped as a senior. He was a member of the National Honor Society. He has a 35-inch vertical leap. He seems to be a 'tweener among 'tweeners. The book is that he might lack bulk play DE in a 3-4, and he's not necessarily an elite pass rusher. Kiper says he has enough measurables to allow an NFL defensive line coach to work with him. NFLdraftscout had him rated as the 16th-best defensive end. Kiper had him at No. 22.
Jahi Word-Daniels, 6-0, 197, Georgia Tech
Word-Daniels is a tough cornerback who has good size, but his stock dropped because he missed half of his final season with a hamstring injury. Kiper says Word-Daniels is so aware and intuitive in coverage that he plays faster than he times. He ran a 4.59 and 4.64 at his pro day. He's an interesting guy. He was Georgia Tech's long snapper on punts and kicks for three years - an oddity for a cornerback. He has a lively personality. He proposed to his girlfriend in front on hundreds of Georgia Tech fans at the preseason fan day in August of 2007. NFLdraftscout rates him as the 39th cornerback. Kiper has him No. 24.
Carlos Thomas, CB, 5-11, 186,
Recorded six career interceptions for the Gamecocks. He was reportedly one of the fastest players on the team with a 4.37 in the 40, but he ran 4.51 and 4.57 during his pro day. He played wideout early in his career before making the transition to defense full time in 2006. NFLdraftscout ranks him as the 76th corner, while Kiper has him 81st.

In addition, there are credible local reports of the following players agreeing to terms with the 49ers:
South Florida OG Matt Huners (6-3, 303)
Michigan State DE Brandon Long (6-3, 254)
Gardner-Webb WR Dobson Collins (6-1, 188)
Notre Dame CB Terrail Lambert (5-10, 190)
Bowling Green OLB Diyral Briggs (6-3, 242)
Once these are confirmed, I'll put up a little more information on the individuals. The 49ers are are expected to announce the list of signees on Thursday.

I am excited to see if sheets makes an impact. His speed is very intreaging.
Kory Sheets is that change of pace back that they want. A true RB though, not a conversion and not Thomas Clayton. It'll be interesting to see them in the minicamp next week
Boone should change the name on his jersey to say "Manimal".
Wow, a comment on Brandon Long, hope we got him... "But Ringer might have been outdone by Long, who was the talk of the pro day. He posted 40 times of 4.61 and 4.63 seconds and had a 10-foot, 9-inch broad jump and a 37 1/2-inch vertical leap — all of which would’ve ranked near the top at the combine. He also had a 4.37 time in the short shuttle and a 6.88 in the three-cone drill, with 32 reps on the bench press."
is clayton that bad?...i thought he made lots of progress.....i am curious to see what happens to robinson and clayton.......
WR Dobson Collins, Gardner-Webb
WR Jeremy Childs, Boise State
CB Terrail Lambert, Notre Dame
all reported to have agreed to contracts
Comment: WR Dobson Collins, Gardner-Webb WR Jeremy Childs, Boise State CB Terrail Lambert, Notre Dame all reported to have agreed to contracts
My response: I can confirm that Childs is NOT signing with the 49ers. He signed with the Chargers. I'll check on the other two. Thank you. --Matt M.
just registered, but been watching this blog for a while. nice work. sheets seems like a more exciting prospect than coffee, maybe not as much power though. rossum is old... so maybe a returner and screen type guy.

welcome peter!
Matt: Dan Gay, OL
Hi Matt-
Thanks for the great draft coverage. A little off subject but wanted your thoughts on a possible trade. Any remote chance that the 9ers could make a trade with the Panthers for Julius Peppers? They're already had negotiations so we know there's been some dialog. Maybe they give them back their 2010 No. 1 + ???. They have a fair amount of cap room and that would immediately upgrade their pass rushing concerns.
If Boone can clean up his act, he could be a starter. Also like the Sheets signing. Could give us the KR/PR when Rossum retires.
Matt, any talk of Leroy Hill or Levi Jones? I know both have baggage, but both can be starters.
Would a udfa like Emmanuel cook work in our 3-4 scheme? Scouts.com compares him to Indy's Sanders. But I don't know if we play the same kind of cover 2.
Comment: Matt: Dan Gay, OL
My response: Looks like Dan Gay, like Childs, is with the Chargers.

this great economy gives me time to do things like post on blogs! another idea with sheets is the fact that frank is a bit injury pone lately (knock on wood), i coffee bulks up that could even be a decent 1-2 insurance policy. As for jean-francois looks pretty decent but plays standing straight up....
what happend to the teams comments about signing some pass rushers amongst the Free Agents? where are they?
Question: what happend to the teams comments about signing some pass rushers amongst the Free Agents? where are they?
My response: The 49ers will announce who has been added when they get the signed contracts back. --Matt M.
MM - Do you think the Niners are intersted in Levi Jones to play RT?
Bengals Will Trade Or Cut Levi Jones - With left tackle Andre Smith secured via the sixth overall pick in the draft, the Cincinnati Bengals now plan to drop a first-round pick from seven years ago. According to James Walker of ESPN.com, the Bengals have informed Levi Jones that they plan to trade or cut him.
Question: Do you think the Niners are intersted in Levi Jones to play RT?
My response: I wouldn't think so. They signed Marvel Smith last month to play right tackle. --Matt M.
Matt, Great draft coverage. Thanks.
Pete Prisco made it sound as though he had direct contact with members of the 9ers organization regarding the drafting of Crabtree. His analysis included a line that said, "some in the organization didn't even want him". Do you have any idea what that was all about and who he might be using as a source?
Question: Do you have any idea what that was all about and who he might be using as a source?
My response: I know that Crabtree was the No. 1 rated receiver on the 49ers' board. And I can't imagine there was any debate whether to take Crabtree or Michael Oher, considering Oher lasted for another 13 picks. --Matt M.
if manny lawson steeps up this year, haralson continues to produce, and smith's back is really ok all this worry is worthless. i think they believe we are solid with the o line and pass rush,
All this talk about not drafting an OLB is understandable, but we really need to look at what is needed. The defense was ranked in the top 3rd-ish of the NFL (13th)and saw production from a number of players without a singular OLB rush "start". If they can just improve those numbers a little bit, they will be fine. If Lawson gets 5 sacks and we get a few more elsewhere, great. We may be able to move into the top 10. We also were in the top 5 in terms of number of plays. A better offense will help this.
Our offense was in the bottom third of the NFL. Getting a second runner and an elite WR "threat" will get us into the top half. If that happens we should be decent, maybe over .500 for the first time in a long time!
Expect incremental improvement.
Why are we all worried about OLB. Heck, maybe Coach Sing will work magic with A. Brooks. He is still on the roster correct? There is no doubting this guy is a talent. Who knows?
I hate to agree with Oneniner, but I think he is on to something. I think this year is the end of the road with M. Robinson. Clayton has to be a better pure runner and Robinson just has not gotten it done. Also with this stone age offense that Sing and this new joker bring to town I don't think it fits into M. Rob's skill set. I know, leadership and special teams. That is great to have leaders but they have to be able to play!
Clayton certainly is a cut candidate, but not M Rob. He's a tough, smart guy who does too many things well to help the team. He may even be used more on 3rd downs with Raye as the OC. Where you get the idea this will be a stone age offense is baffling. Clayton, so far, is only a runner, nothing else. Coffee and/or Sheets will no doubt bump him off the team. His practice squad time might be used up.
MRob is an great special teamer. There is no way they cut him. He is not a third down short yardage back, so it's great if Coffee can get that done.
We very likely will keep 5 RB's, Gore, Coffee, Sheets, Norris and MRob. MRob is a ST stud. Keep in mind, if Sheets can beat out Rossum for kick return duties, then a roster spot would be open for an additional back such as MRob. Clayton, adding no value in special teams, is a likely goner.
What about longtjime49erfan's comment. This is intriguing, The 49ers now have two number 1's next year and Carolina has 0. What does it take to get Pepper's? Is it true there has been talk? I have not heard this before. Matt? Anybody? C'mon now, I registered today just so I could ask the question!
Looks like teams are bringing in huge UFA classes. I guess that speaks to the weakness of this draft class and everyone's giving it the "one of these bums might be a diamond" approach. I think it underscores how well McC did in this draft getting a future #1 out of it and finding solid picks, too. And that stunning gift at #1.
Question: Do you think there is any significant chance of the 49ers pursuing Seahawks free agent OLB Leroy Hill (since they didn't address this area in the draft)?
It looks like the needs they had in the draft were addressed in free agency. Boone, who seems crazy, did play for Ohio State and that takes talent to get on that roster. I think he will be a good back up and could move into a starting roll- if his head is on straight. K-Sheets is also a great pick up, if he can learn from Rossum he can benefit us greatly.
Matt, quick questions; we see some teams moving in to a Wild Cat option and the 9ers have done this a little last year. Do you see them using this more? Between Battle and Robinson you have 2 college QB's, if you add Crabbtree a wideout who can go up and get the ball (so it doesn't need to be as accurate) it would seem like a lethal combo. Ok, that wasn't so quick.
Peppers is in no-mans-land until he signs his Franchise tender. The Niners and Panthers can discuss compensation, but until he signs his tender, he is not technically a Panther and therefore they cannot trade him. On the otherside, the Niners cannot negotiate an extension with him because the Panthers have Franchised him and have exclusive negotiating rights. Once he signs his tender or the Panthers pull it, then things change.
Personally, I think he going to want too much money and too long a deal and even giving back Carolinas first for him seems a bit steep on top of the contract.
Thanks for the reply and the update!
Not only that, but the size/strength of the UDFA class is pretty good. If you even get one of those guys to stick, you're doing well.
Skeebers,
I'll even go further on how well McC did in the draft this year. I believe going into the 2nd round that he thought not only would be able to get the players HE wanted but he could parlay the 49ers 2nd pick this year for Carolina's 1st round pick next year and be in a great position to snag one of the top 2 QB Bradfford or McCoy in next years draft. He also was pretty confident in getting need players that were not going to be drafted like OT Boone & the OLB from Stanford.
Checked a couple other things. The Niners could actually negotiate with Peppers because the Panthers did not tag him as an Exclusive Franchise player, however if the Panthers don't match the offer, the Niners have to give up two first rounders, so that is not going to happen...

Leroy Hill is an OLB in a 4-3 defensive scheme. He is 6'1" 238lbs. If he played for the 49ers he would play ILB (although still undersized). The 49ers did address depth at ILB (Scott McKillop). Leroy Hill's style of play would only allow him to be a 3-4 MIKE LBer which is the same position played by Patrick Willis.
While I love the UDFA days as much as anyone (it's like a bargain days shopping spree), let's not get carried away. It's not likely any of these guys will make the roster. Some will land on the Practice Squad, however. They'll get a couple of years to develop, and might even get called up by us (or another team) when injuries shorten the depth chart.
It is this risk (of being grabbed by another team) which makes the PS a haven for promising UDFAs. Remember, we lost both Daven Holly and Larry Grant after drafting them and stashing them on the PS.
Off hand, I think the most likely UDFA pick-up to make the early season roster would be a situational pass rusher, to fill Roderick Green's role. They'd have to look a lot better at it than Lawson in the pre-season, though, as roster spots are precious.
Your probably right, under Singletary the 49ers aren't jumping out there and paying exorbitant salaries as they have in the past. However, given the 'Niner's history of two picks in the first round, I wonder if "one in the hand is worth two in the bush"?
Tony Wragge completes his BA: http://www.49ers.com/pressbox/news_detail.php?PRKey=5272§ion=PR%20News
He's a UDFA success story. Undrafted in 2002, he'll be in his 6th year "on roster" I believe, with a couple years of PS and 1 season in the Arena League.
Pretty cool. Although where's Rachal?
Some ramblings on the Bay Area football writer scene --
Is it just me, or do the Chronical writers Crumpacker and Lynch not like Singletary? ... I can't stand Lynch when he's on KNBR. ... I liked Ira Miller a lot. With his departure, Maiocco is easily tops in the Bay Area. Ironically, none of the next-best writers even write for an SF paper.
I am wondering about the OL we have on the roster/PS last year. We have Wallace, de la Puente and Toledo. I haven't heard anything about them. Hopefully they'll turn out well for us in the long run. Boone sounds like a reclaimation project for Sing to work on. I am probably the happiest with Sheets. I really think he's got a legit shot at the roster as a scatback, except at 200+, he's a bit bigger. More like a Sproles than a Metcalf. Gore, Coffee, Sheets, Norris and MRob sound like a great combo for RB and special teams.
Matt-
Three brief and random questions: 1)Does not drafting a pass rusher mean that there is some hope for Ahmad Brooks? 2) What happened to Chrissy Mauck? and 3) This draft, and the Jones signing, seem to mean bad things for Dominique Ziegler, who I think shows promise. Is that the case?
Thanks as always....
I don't get all these positive comments about Boone? If anyone watched Boone play against Florida and LSU, there is no mistake this guy is slower than a snail. I mean the D linemen blew past this guy before he could get out of his stance! What's he expected to do with the speed in the NFL?
I don't know if he played against USC last year because his name was never mentioned. He comes from the Big Ten. It's all about the OL pushing your man forward for runs straight ahead. That Conference isn't much for outside running. Also, speed in the Conference is much slower on the whole than in the other big Conferences like the SEC, PAC 10, Big 12 and even the Big East.
Sorry guys! Watching Boone in the BCS Championship games, I could tell the guy drinks a keg because it still was stuck in his butt!
Two Additional Reasons to Fire McCloughan:
Prior to the draft, McCloughan said the Niners would not trade up, but they would be willing to trade back. That, no doubt, was because McCloughan and the Niners did not want to pay for an earlier draft position. But, even though it's a little different, the Niners DID trade up to get into the first round. McCloughan said he, "Didn't see value in the second round after three or four guys they were targetting got drafted." There is a difference between McCloughan's statement that he wouldn't move up into the top ten, and his second round trade into the first with Carolina, but not much.
Consider what Bill Belichick said about first round draft selections: "It used to be that first rounders were a way to reward a struggling team," Belichick went on to say that now a first round selection is a highly paid guy who isn't guaranteed NFL success who potential divides the team." In short, Belichick wants out of the first round entirely. But McCloughan wants in and he'll sell the farm to do it. He just traded Chilo Rachal and Parys Haralson for Balmer. This is why Belichick is on top and the Niners struggle. McCloughan didn't see value there when that's all Belichick sees in the later rounds. If the Niners are SO concerned with value, why overpay the likes of Tully Banta Cain, Ashley Lelie, Nate Clements and Alex Smith (second contract)? Additionally, other teams that draft well picked in the second round. Why is McCloughan so smart that he avoided a potential disaster round? I don't buy the spin. McCloughan's second round trade was terrible for several different reasons: 1.) You don't trade up 2.) they got NO value for time (next year's pick), 3.) a lack of "team emphasis," the Billich way. 4.) no understanding that NOW is the time, not five years from now. We could be developing an additional second round tackle behind Marvel. We could he developing an addiontal OLB behind Haralson. But instead, we'll wait a year for another Balmer.
The second reason the Niners should fire Scot McCloughan is Micheal Crabtree. Crabtree's abilities are for another debate, and I don't care if Crabtree is Randy Moss squared.
The Niners build from the outside in, not the correct way of building their lines first. Sure, the Niners drafted Adam Snyder, Kevin Baas, Cody Wallace and the like first before they drafted Crabtree, but those guys aren't developed. There's a difference between developing talent, getting them starting and simply drafting a guy. Drafting a guy and sitting him on the bench does NOT mean it's time to address the skill positions. You must get a full functioning offensive line together and working at a high level before you move on. 55 sacks ain't cuttin' it.
Glenn Coffee was a stud running behind Andre Smith. But if Marvel has back problems, Coffee will be a dud running behind Adam Snyder. The correct pick was Micheal Oher. For several reasons. 1.) You don't have to worry about OTs for another ten years. 2.) You have depth. If, god forbid, Staley gets hurt, Oher's your guy to back him up and all is not lost with Snyder at ROT 3.) Confidence: The players who are lifers for the Niners need to know their owner and GM are smart, progressive and understand football. Jerry Rice just talked to Crabtree about staying motivated. But what does Jerry know about being moticated during his prime under an owner without a clue? Jerry played under Bill Walsh. Tough to lose motivation there. If I was Frank Gore, I'd be so bummed playing under a GM like Scot McCloughan. Players aren't dumb. They know.
McCloughan needs to go yesterday. But unfortantely for all hardcore Niner fans, Jed York looks up to McCloughan is learning from him. Singletary defends McCloughan in the press as, "One of the best." Scot McCloughan is one of the, if not THE worst GM in the NFL. It's time for McCloughan to be send packing. Jed York wants to be Eddie D in all the worst ways. If he has any Eddie D in him he'll can McCloughan NOW!!!
hey spitblood get a life. you're arguments make no sense and if you knew what you were talking about you would be working in the nfl instead of bloggin...ya jerk!
Skeebers – you can thank me later, but that stunning gift at #1 was due in large part to my Gregorian chants at sunrise on Saturday.
I regret to report that I forgot to wear my Niner cap inverted and backwards during the 3rd round show. As a result, McGM chose Coffee over the versatile OLB DeAndre Levy, who would have added more pressure and depth in our 3-4.
As for FA Alex Boone, I shotgunned a frosty cold Coors Light. The other 39 I kept in the fridge.
I hope Ian Johnson (Boise State) gets a job somewhere. Interesting to see Graham Harrell undrafted. Willie Tuitama, too.
one more thing for the wannabe fan spitcrap...its DAVID Baas...and if it were not for McCloughan we probably wouldn't have Willis. i say you fire yourself for leaving stupid comments!
Kevin Boss, David Baas = Kevin Baas.... my bad.
Franchise, a good Gregorian never fails. Are you sure you weren't chanting for Sanchez, though?
Hey Spitblood -
Why don't you worry about your eternally doomed Raiders before you spend 6 hours a day blogging on our Niner websites.
Do you have a job? Or do you just sit at the public library typing away on the tax payers dime?
Oops, you hear that........? Times up, time to let the high school students on the computer. I heard they have a very important paper due.
RB Glen Coffee - #29
wasn't taht foster's digits? maybe i'm way behind but i suppose that means he's gone... i seriously think i may have missed an announcement.
spitblood...Not to be negative. But I haven't read anything that long since I read "The Conquest of the Roman Empire" in my freshman and sophmore years in College. Anyone who takes that many words to prove a point, really wonders to himself if he believes in what he is writing. Hail Caesar!
I was too late, and overmatched – Rex Ryan, Tannenbaum, and citizens from every exit in New Jersey were chanting, begging, screaming and crying for Sanchez.
Except of course for those two clowns wearing the Chrebet jerseys, shown on ESPN sulking at a downtown bar after the pick. New Yawkas... tough crowd.
That guy who was saying MRob is gone doesn't pay any attention to this team's philosophy... go hit up YouTube and check out MRob's run where he destroys Minnesota's safety - Owens. He gives more effort on every play than anyone on our team and can flat out lay the wood to someone at 90mph on special teams. He can run wildcat if we ever wanted to... somedays I think he might be the best QB on the roster... ok maybe not but there are times...
I love the Sheets pick-up... he's another warrior that I'm surprised didn't get drafted... he might be as good of a pick-up as Coffee thanks to return abilities.
Up front... i get the feeling that Davis starts at least a handful of games w/in the next two years as he rises to "2nd" string early next year. McKillop will start as soon as Spikes has called it quits and become a reliable starter, and Jean-Francois will piss off EVERYONE. If he can find a way to keep his mouth shut... forever... and Singletary slaps him in the face early on... keeping him in line (cause I doubt the JUNIOR - EARLY ENTRY learned ANYTHING by falling all the way to the 7TH ROUND) perhaps a miracle can occur and that God-given talent he has could turn him in to the stud he always should have been. I'm gonna lean towards the likely notion that he's a lunatic.
Hey Splitblood - how do you think the Patriots were able to draft Jared Mayo last year in the Top 10 after going 18-1? I figured being a 49ers fan you would realize they gave us their late #1 pick in 2007 so we could take Joe Staley and then in turn the next year got our #7 pick, which they used on Mayo, the Defensive ROY. Doesn't that very trade shoot holes in half of your thesis? If I had the time, I would knock down the rest of your long post, but I didn't read past the Bill Belichick comments since he fleeced the 49ers to move UP into the first round last year. How convenient for you to forget!!!! I'm glad we have two #1's next year, just like the Patriots and Bill Belichick were last year.
that frenchman plays standing straight up.
Question: Coffee - #29 wasn't taht foster's digits? maybe i'm way behind but i suppose that means he's gone..
My response: Yes, you are way behind, but that's OK. Here is a sort of fun read from my last day at the combine. This is one of the times I reported Foster would not return.
http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/2009/02/day-4-stuck-between-indy-and-sfo.html
MM...wow you were right on about Al Davis and their pick in your combine article, and I still can't wipe the smile off of my face.
Druck,
I'm with you about Spit's convoluted post. It makes no sense at all & we're all dumber after reading it. Spitblood needs to go back to Lynch's blog where he belongs with the rest of the wannabe "Last Comic Standing" candidates like dennis_from delmar, rob_deluca & renoberger.
yeah thanks mike, i knew the idea was he wouldnt be back, i just never heard anything official. he realy seemed like a waste of space last year anyway...
Spitblood: You've been missed (believe it or not), my little friend. Tried to email you but it didn't go through. Email me at emgeoff@q.com.
Michael Robinson is already everything that Pat White is supposed to become.A high-upside receiver,a QB who can run the wildcat,a special-teams ace and a solid RB.He was even a good 3rd and 2 in his pre-Hostler debut. He's not going anywhere.
Has John Parker Wilson signed with anyone yet?
After reading your post I need to tell you that you are defineltly a person who needs to see a psychiatrist. And you need to do it right away! You make no sense young man. The old sage has spoken!
Boone could be the steal of this draft. did a little research on the kid. I don't think we need to worry about the right side of the O line for a long time fellas. As far as OLB's go, I think Coach Sing knows something we don't. I can't believe how some people can write what they do and think they are making sense. You think Spitblood will be OK?
Hey Franchise - I was totally wrong about Sanchez. From what I read about what the Jet's put him through and the way he blew the socks of the people who did the interview really impressed me. His pro day was incredible. Throwing bb's through a garden hose...
F49er-not only do we have a shot at QB prospects next year with extra pick but just a reminder there are a couple of good NT's coming out next year "Mount " Cody-and Ndamukong Suh -very exciting!
M ROB will stay
1. Excellent special teams player
2. Plays hard
3. Excellent hand out of the backfield
4. Picks up blocks well in the backfield
5. Has great awareness in the backfield.
6. Maybe can run the wildcat, if his vision develops
One bad this is of course his poor running vision and failure to see cutback lanes.
Yes the 49ers definetly have some options for next year's draft. It's awsome!
Matt,
ESPN is talking about the 49ers possibly being interested in Leroy Hill...have you heard any rumblings on this?
Question: Matt, ESPN is talking about the 49ers possibly being interested in Leroy Hill...have you heard any rumblings on this?
My response: Yes, I have heard rumblings. No, they are not interested. The position Hill would play for the 49ers is currently occupied by Patrick Willis. --Matt M.
Spit-dumb is way out there - You actually read that long nonsense rant?......are you guys related?
McGm is the Man......every time i reflect back to the draft - a smile comes to my face - WE FINALLY HAVE A SUPERSTAR WR, YES.....A.Smith is now on....
my draft grade is an A- ,it could be better if some of our late rounders do as well as some people think they will ...the QB. and mkillop etc. the key tho , might just be in who we didn't draft !!! the grade might go down if everette brown turns out to be a great pass rusher !! hey !!! hmmm looks like we have a new guy on here ! spitblood ! hi friend ! i'm looking forward to hours of discussion ! wanna be friends ? ........guys , all kidding aside spitblood is a well blogger , and i see you are going to enjoy having him as much as i do !!! make sure you tell him how much you like his savvy posts !!! oneniner ,im sure you'll wanna make him feel at home ! i know you will like singletary as hc.!!! we finally got our man !!! f49er thanks for the shout out ! the thing is we do have fun , and get a lot of good laughs over there ...sorry tho we miss out on your astute analysis like ... "i'll take crabtree over harvin any day " wow , impressive !!!
and i forgot this little gem ...Yes the 49ers definetly have some options for next year's draft. It's awsome! ..... since i was one of the first people on these blogs to hope and call for crabtree and made the wr. position a main focus of our team . i took a lot of flak here from your hero miaiocco for calling for the wr. as a main long term need before the 08 season . now that you know me a little better i have to say , your post above was DEFINETLY AWSOME ! i will be sure to come back often for more of your definetly awsome posts !!!
Thanks, Rob, now scurry back to Lynch's freak show and giggle all day with del_mar and make 50 posts per day!!! that are all just AWESOME!!! and be sure to tell us WHEN YOU GO TO BED!!! and WHEN YOU WAKE UP!!! and WHAT YOU'RE HAVING FOR LUNCH!!! What is this? Lynch's posters aren't happy trashing each other all day and have to invade other sites to sate themselves? Must be blog envy.
dude chill out - there was no way you really thought we could have had crabtree ..maybe u wished - dont try to take credit for something you wouldnt have bet on.....and we didnt pick crabtree because we NEEDED a wr, we picked him because he was the BPA.......
hey one niner ! you gotta have hope was pretty much it ! my thing was raji , j smith , monroe , curry , crabtree or trade down ! one QB. was going for sure , so htat left 5 players and 8 teams ahead of us ! every year there will be maybe a trade and one team makes a pick that makes you go ...huh ?(this year it was the raiders lol) so with that i was hoping for one to fall to us ! matt m. and i were both thinking the best impact for us would be raji and crabtree . and it was awesome to get him !!! oh , skeebers , good to see you too, lol !
oh and btw skeebs , this blog was the first one i ever posted on , i only switched to the other one later on ! i remember some of the guys on here , and come read it from time to time !
spit got banned from sfgate, I doubt he'll last very long here. His favorite technique is to call people names.
I'm fired up to see McKillop next to Willis. He is McCoughlan's "Football player" to a "T":

The perfect TED ;)
Matt :
Did they pass that new rule that allows a team to keep a rookie QB on the practice squad without the option of another team claiming him,as they can with other players on the PS ?
Nate Davis should be the starting QB for the next decade at least BUT he will probably need at least a year or maybe two sitting behind Hill and learning and fine tuning his game for the NFL before he is 100% ready.
I would love if he were kept on the roster and started as soon as possible but I believe he will be brought along slowly and if put on the PS he might get grabbed by several teams after thay get a look at him in preseason or hear about how well he is doing in practice etc.
You feel the 49ers wouldn't have Willis if not for Scotty? Willis was drafted near the top of the first rd. He was the consensus best linebacker in the draft and the 49ers run a 3-4 defense(the team had a HUGE need for a player like Willis). It was the type of no brainer pick that even Matt Millen could make. Do you feel we wouldn't have Crabtree without Scotty as well?? The true test of a GM is how they do on picks in the later rounds. Hand the average Joe off the street the ability to draft in the top 10 every year and he's gonna come away with at least a few solid players.
The jury is definitely still out on Scotty.
it wasn't a much of a no brainer as you think at the time. Carriker was rate almost as highly as Willis and DE/DT was considered the position of most need that year. Most thought we'd get Carriker. Singletary wasn't sold on Willis. It was McCloughan that sold Singletary on Willis. I'm no huge fan of McCloughan but I gotta give him credit where credit is due.
Wilson signed with Atlanta.

i read where the 49ers just signed kalif mitchell, dl out of ECU.
matt do you have a final list? i havent seen any official announcements. working at the training facility this week and i want to know who to watch for!
thanks in advance.

A.Smith is now on drugs...
--------------------------------
No he is not on drugs,he is a clean cut guy and a fine young man and our future 3rd stringer,if he improves, lol (wink)
And to those of you who think we might use that extra #1 next year to pick one of the top QB's(f49er) ,well,we now have a future top QB prospect in Nate "THE GREAT" Davis ! He is a combination of A much better arm than Alex and all the intangebles and more of Hill ! If he does not take the starting spot from Hill in a year or two then I will be very disappointed . He is the QB I have been waiting for about a decade for the Niners to aquire.
And OneNiner,Alex is now the 4th most talented QB on our roster.(and this sentence does not have a "wink" after it) .
And that poor guy is spitting blood because his brain in hemmoraging ! That's what happens to you when you sit in the Black Hole in Oakland on sundays and drink yourself stupid. Run ,don't walk, to the nearest hospital right away ,you are having a stroke Spitblood ! And if the doctors do save enough brain cells for you to remember this advice, then stop watching football and get a hobby ,like knitting, where you don't get excited enough to cause another stroke . Now,as I said earlier, get up and leave your Mother's basement where you live and go to the nearest Hospital.
signed A Concerned Friend.
nflguy: by getting gems in the later rounds ,do you mean guys like Gore and Harelson and T. Brown and Goldson and Josh Morgan and Delanie Walker etc. Not to mention the undrafted free agents like Tony Wragge was and Sheets etc etc are this year and of course there is this years draft where Scotty picked up our future hall of fame QB ,Nate Davis ,in the 5th round, not to mention McKillip and Pascoe etc in this years draft's later rounds.
Is that the kind of gems in the later rounds you were talking about that is the true test of a GM ? If so,then I guess you are giving Scotty a really good grade !(or should be if you actually think before you judge).
Matt,
Can you confirm or deny any rumor that the 9ers are going to try and make a trade for Julias Peppers? The 9ers and Panthers did deal at the draft. Does that have any influence?
spitblood needs more friends
He might find his first one if he ever came out of his Mother's basement, where he lives, lol
Question: Can you confirm or deny any rumor that the 9ers are going to try and make a trade for Julias Peppers?
My response: I didn't know there were any rumors about the 49ers trading for Peppers. I wrote on Facebook that Peppers would help any team, but the 49ers would have to determine whether acquiring him is worth the cost of draft picks and money. --Matt M.
Wow - If Coach Sing and Staley can keep Boone out of the bar, he is the Physical with an "F" type right tackle we need. Perhapse a year behind Marvel is what this kid needs:

I am impressed Matt. Still responding to questions after one hundred posts.
Question: Do you think the 49ers will pursue LaBoy who was recently released from AZ? He only had 4 sacks last year, but could provide veteran depth developing into a rotation of Harralson, Lawson, and Laboy.
Thanks for all the good work.
Thanks for the update -I posted last night about Diyral Briggs rumor but kept getting error message...Matt the two small school prospects I harped on were Franz Joseph(now signed by Oakland!!!!) and Greg Micheli QB from Mount Union(stats are astounding on this kid!).Just checked back to the 49ers site and Ethan Waugh attended this kids pro day - seemed very positive about him any chance we take a look at this kid(good QB's are a Commodity!)?
Matt,
The rumor I read was on Foxsports.com. I believe the Sac Bee made the claim.
Question: Do you think the 49ers will pursue LaBoy who was recently released from AZ?
My response: If the 49ers look at LaBoy it would not be for the 2009 season. That's about all I can say at this point until I get some things firmed up. --Matt M.
Comment: The rumor I read was on Foxsports.com. I believe the Sac Bee made the claim.
My response: I'm not being snotty, I just want to clarify some things. . .
A RUMOR is, "Word through the grapevine is that the 49ers are interested in Peppers."
A REPORT is, "We have learned the 49ers are interested in Peppers."
An OPINION is, "The 49ers should go after Peppers."
So far, there has only been an opinion, and I agree with the opinion. I don't know if the 49ers are going after Peppers, but I would be of the opinion that it is definitely worth their while to see what the cost is, both for compensation in a trade and what he wants for a new contract, before determining whether to move forward. --Matt M.
It looks like we finally got a Briggs...without tampering
hey Matt, there's rumors we also signed Khalif Mitchell DL E.Car
Either way "report" or "rumor", I was hoping you would be able to find out a little more info. Excellent blog by the way. I have become a loyal reader.
You must not have been paying attention. It was neither a report NOR a rumor. It was another sportswriter saying "this is what I think the niners should do". It was not based on any information about what the niners are in fact doing, nor did it purport to be.
Looking at the roster and trying to figure out which players are not going to make the team is getting pretty hard. We need to cut 20 and more if any of these UDFA make the squad.
Matt,
Will you be at the mini-camp this weekend? Do you view it from the bleachers, like we do for Open Practices, or do you roam the field? Request interviews, press conference style, or open access to all players and coaches?
Wow, when's the last time we could say that?
The worst part about all of this is that we still have to wait 4 months for the season to start.
Boone reminds me of Kevin Fagan for some reason. I used to love watching Fagan beat the heck out of the left tackle for 25 plays a game. I can still see him with that "Baby Seal Club Move" he had on those poor left tackles..by the end of the game those left tackles couldn't grab a Gatorade their arms were so beat up. What a beauty Kevin Fagan was.
Need that nastiness..
