The 49ers selected Pitt inside linebacker Scott McKillop with in the fifth round with the No. 146 overall pick.
McKillop (6-1, 245) is recognized as a hard-worker and consistent middle linebacker. He was the Big East Defensive Player of the Year as a senior at Pitt, where he had 137 tackles, 17.5 for loss, four sacks, two interceptions and four passes broken up.
You can figure that he will be a standout on special teams as a rookie, as he learns behind veteran Takeo Spikes.
The first time that comes across when you talk to McKillop is his passion for the game. He spent his first two seasons as a special-teams player at Pitt as he was H.B. Blades' backup. (He was also the backup long-snapper.)
McKillop, obviously, is excited about getting the call from the 49ers. What could be better from his standpoint? He's going to be playing for a Hall of Fame linebacker in coach Mike Singletary. He'll be at inside linebacker behind Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes.
"I'm looking forward to seeing where they need me, and I'm looking forward to getting an opportunity to play," said McKillop, whom NFLdraftscout.com compares to Zach Thomas.
McKillop said his only interaction with the 49ers when he spoke for about 10 minutes with 49ers assistant coach Vance Singletary. The only visit McKillop made was a trip to

Haaaaaave you met TED?
somebody watches too much how i met your mother.... me included
don't know much about this guy. what do you guys think?
Another Singletary blue collar type guy ;)

same thing i think about every draft pick: lets see what he does in training camp. still, this guy has a good rep as a blue collar guy and a hard worker and has the size that he could potentially be a decent ted. some scouting reports say he tries to go around blocks rather than through them, though, but we'll see if singletary can bash those tendencies out of him.
my pet prospects remaining are mitch king and jamon meredith. at least one should be around by our 2nd 5th rounder...
Guys I live in Pittsburgh and though I'm not a big Pitt fan I still follow them. This guy is going to be great. He had 150 tackles in 07 with 98 of them being solo. 2 years under Singletary,Willis, and Spikes. He's also a vocal leader in the locker room where Willis is the emotional leader. Great pick up boys. Go niners!!!!! Awesome
Special teamer, depth.
Good football player -little small but he'll play 110%... when he's on the field. My armchair GM pick at this spot was Franz Joseph (he'll probably go to the Dolphins and he WILL be a star!).
Mel Kiper agrees with you on this guy next to Willis :)
I figured we would get Mckillop but I figured maybe 6th round. I was guessing D. Robinson or Meredith. I'm hoping one of them will still be around with our next pick.
my second thought wave on this pick: If anyone loses a roster spot to this guy its gonna be Jeff Ulbrich. Hope they both make the team, jeff is so close to joining the ten year club i'd feel terrible for him if he lost out. plus its always tough to lose a smart, versatile vet.
Sounds like a smart, tough football players. Seems like a good fit.
Jamon Meredith or L. Murtha next?
Meredith or Robinson!!! Robinson only because we don't know if we are going to lose Bass next year. I've heard rumors that Singletary don't think Bass is nasty enough.
Good pick. Congrats to Coach! He clearly has inspired McCloughan to be better! Mike Singletary is the Man!
OOps there goes Meredith and Topou hope Murtha or Robinson still there next.
Pretty decent pick. He will probably not ever be starter material but the kid plays his heart out and will be a pretty good back-up LB / special teams player for sure.
There goes Meredith. Talented kid but the big knock on him is his toughness / dedication, not a guy Singletary would probably gamble on anyway.
And there goes Robinson!
I am thinking Michael Bennett DE at 171
Saints traded up for a kicker.
Wow.
Herman Johnson to Cardinals.
Good pick at this point.
I say Murtha to Oakland.
He shouts "ZBS".
Niners now on the clock.
Nate Davis to SF.
Nate Davis ;)
Wow Nate davis!!
Matt You are Smoking! Nate Davis!
NATE DAVIS!!!!!! I'VE BEEN WANTING THIS PICK FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!
Another surprise Nate Davis!?!
Dude I'm so happy about this, I have a feeling Davis, with the right grooming, is gonna be a beast. Hopefully comparable to Big Ben. FA SHO. Can I have a hug from someone?
I think that we will hang on the coat-tails of M.Crabtree in this draft. Though i'm excited with M.Crabtree, i must confess that i feel disappointed that we traded away selections for next year when there were still good players on te board. A Pass-rusher was a glaring need and E.Brown and M.Johnson were there for the taking but we forfieted for next year. As i'm blogging the Niners just picked N.Davis, who i really thought highly of. He may not have all the measurables but this kid put Ball St. on the map. ESPN is not very high on Davis' mechanics but they fail to note that he put the ball in receiver' hands and the last time i looked, that's what counts! GO 2009-10 NINERS!
The 49ers may not have the offensive coaches to tutor this kid, but with a year or two of quality coaching, Davis could be SPECIAL!
