May 2009 Archives

With the signing of sixth-round pick Bear Pascoe, a tight end, to a four-year contract, the 49ers have now gotten four of their seven draft selections under contract.

Ernest Loren Maiocco, a Korean War veteran and a damn good person, died late Monday night . . . on Memorial Day.

    **Updates with contract info***

Veteran cornerback Dre' Bly, who signed a one-year contract with the 49ers today, said he is eager to compete against Tarell Brown and Shawntae Spencer for a starting job.

Veteran cornerback Dre' Bly signed a one-year contract with the 49ers just one day after the club announced starter Walt Harris would undergo season-ending surgery on his right knee.
Expect to see a continuation of Vick-to-49ers speculation. It will remain that way until somebody in a position of power with the 49ers comes out and says, "No," or Vick ends up on another team's roster.
Veteran cornerback Brian Kelly, whom the Lions cut in December, is scheduled to visit the 49ers and take a physical later today, a league source said. Dre' Bly is also scheduled to arrive in Santa Clara today.

The 49ers are wasting no time in targeting a replacement for injured Walt Harris, as the club is scheduled to meet Thursday with veteran free-agent cornerback Dre' Bly, a league source said.

Jerry Rice attended the last part of 49ers practice today for a filming of the ESPN show, "Homecoming." After today's session of organized team activities, the team gathered around as he spoke to them for about 10 minutes on the field.

Veteran cornerback Walt Harris is likely to miss the 2009 season after sustaining a torn ACL in his right knee yesterday. The injury will require surgery, the team said.

There have been a lot of questions tossed my way recently. And I haven't had a lot of time to answer them. But here are some answers to common questions surrounding the 49ers at this time.
The 49ers might not be in midseason form - and that's OK because it is the month of May. But coach Mike Singletary is exhibiting mid-November intensity.

***Includes updates on the contract numbers, as well as a new deal for Jeff Ulbrich that suggests the likelihood he figures into the team's plan for this season.***

Niners chief negotiator Paraag Marathe is not waiting around for the team's draft picks to be slotted.

The 49ers today announced the signings of linebacker Scott McKillop and defensive end Ricky Jean-Francois to four-year contracts.

It's a nice idea. But as the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished.
The 49ers begin organized team activities (OTAs) on Monday, and most of the 82 81 players on their roster are expected to participate.

Remember when I wrote I wasn't going to post a blog entry for a while? Well, I lied.

The big competition of the 49ers' offseason is taking place at quarterback - just as it did a year ago. In fact, it was the only head-to-head comparison going on during the 49ers' recently completed minicamp.

The 49ers' minicamp concluded today, and I can't even begin to say which quarterback is in the lead for the starting job. (But you would think Shaun Hill began with a significant edge, based on how he played last season after Mike Singletary elevated him to the starting lineup.)

Today was coordinator day at 49ers minicamp, as offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye and defensive coordinator Greg Manusky fielded questions in a group setting for the first time this offseason.
Niners rookies and selected veterans hit the practice field this afternoon. Very few of the veterans are in attendance this weekend, as the youngsters get a chance to take the bulk of the practice repetitions during the minicamp.
The 49ers picked up an additional 2010 first-round draft pick last week, and GM Scot McCloughan said today it is possible the club will not still own it when next year's draft rolls around.
