Coach Mike Singletary said at the conclusion of organized team activities that the 49ers are behind many of the top teams in the league because they: a) don't have a starting QB named; b) have their seventh offensive coordinator in seven years; c) they need to work out their depth chart at WR, and d) have a head coach who has not spent a full season on the job.
Answer: The 49ers might be playing catch-up, but they will not have any additional time in training camp to make up ground. The league announced today that the 49ers are scheduled to have rookies report to training camp at their team complex in
The entire team will join the rookies two days later, July 30. The 49ers' first exhibition game is scheduled for Aug. 14 at home against the Broncos. The full squad can't be required to begin practice more than 15 days prior to the first exhibition game.
The 49ers' second exhibition is Aug. 22 against the Raiders. The clubs are finalizing plans to practice against each other that week, too.
The Cardinals, winners of the NFC last season, open camp with rookies and veterans on July 29 on the campus of Northern Arizona in
The 49ers have yet to announce which practice days will be open to the public. Expect the 49ers to have fewer days available for fans this summer because of the logistics around the club's ongoing construction project at the team's training facility. One reasonable guess is that the 49ers might open only for the weekend practices.

Excuses are a weak attempt to shed responsibility. Not acceptable in my mind. Time to man up and take control of your own destiny as a team. No one was in a worse position than Atlanta and I didn't hear any excuses coming from them. If this team does not show me something this year not only will I be surprised but I will also be angry, disgusted and disappointed!
sounds good talking tough...
....you make it sound like its that easy...we are talking about human bodies as props for physical play...
...you can't just dismiss the reality of LUCK
...". If this team does not show me something" - you talk as if they don't want to succeed, ...
...there is no if - they will show something
..have no doubt - 49ers 2009 NFC west champions
WOW!
Razor coming on a bit strong don't you think? I mean we are talking about the 1st exhibition game & against the Raiders no less. That's why the 49ers have done so much work in the OTA's & minicamps. Dude lightin' up! Go have a cocktail. This is much ado about nothing.
Can you make Frank Gore get a twitter account?
I think you're reading way too much into what Coach Singletary has listed as reasons we are behind the elite teams. In fact, he hasn't said anything that everyone who has a brain doesn't already know, at least from the outside looking in.
I just think Coach Singletary is trying to be realistic and humble. I think it made a good, I ain't telling you anything you didn't already know soundbyte.
The whole division is going to massive coaching turmoil, hawks, rams, new HCs, and Ari new coordinators. So how about we get through an open practice before you start being a downer.
My bad,
I thought Razor was talking about the window of time between when camp opens & the 1 Pre-season game. It's still wayyy tooo early to panic about the regular season. The 49ers have put in alot of work in these OTA's just to get ready for TC. This is still much ado about nothing (Razor's comments)
I'd say that it must be the steroid shot I had to get today for this Poison Sumac but then I'd be making an excuse for my so called "too old school attitude". Look I am obviously talking about the entire season and no I don't think I need to lighten up as far as the expectation to take that next step. No excuses, dominate, decimate and unite in an unbridled pursuit of victory. And as far as "luck" goes here is some more "old school" for you dudes-Make Your Own!!
God Bless America I Love 3 A.M. TweetS!!!!!!!!!
When Sing said what he did about being behind, he said it about being behind the elite teams. Also, he said it after saying this is a play-off team. When you only get part of the story it looks like an excuse. The old "taken out of context" applies here. I would doubt Matt did that intentionally.
Mr Maiocco,
Who is your favorite player on the team right now? What person do you see being our top offensive player this year?
also I see alex smith winning the job soon after training camp begins.
shut up one niner, razor eater is right! no excuses, not now! already sing has made several excuses about this team and we haven't even begun training camp yet!!!! I'm with razor eater, if they don't do something this year, i will be angry, upset, disgruntled, but i am a die hard niners fan, got the tattoo to prove it on my arm so i will always love them but razors got a very good point so give im some slack jack off oneniner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You don't know Mike Singletary very well. One thing he does NOT do, is make excuses.
Never has. Never will.
Everyone on the team will be held accountable for their actions, and that starts with Singletary himself.
I don't see Singletary's comments as excuses. Just statin' the facts. Also, I don't believe these were the only words that came out of his mouth. I'd like to see the entire statement, or was it just a response to a question? Like, where is your team in relation to other teams? What we need here is for the season to begin so we can talk about something meaningful! See all of you guys in a month.
I agree with Razoreater. Look at what Miami and Atlanta did last year, it was hard work, good signings and strong drafting. I'm excited for the season, but I'm also tired of always looking towards next year, or waiting for someone to mature. I want this team to do well, and to do that, they need to get things in order as quickly as possible. I hope it all comes together early in training camp, but the last thing I want to hear is about youth and waiting. We've done that already, not just win already!
The Falcons were basically a 500 team in 2005/2006. They of course had a horrendous 2007 (Michael Vick/Bobby Petrino).
They retooled in 2008 and had a great season. But it's not like they were a horrible team in their recent past.
They were a 500 team with one terrible year (2007).
The Dolphins? No doubt that Parcells & company did a great job last year but they also caught a HUGE, HUGE break when the Jets cut loose a 'Pro Bowl' type QB just before the season, allowing Chad Pennington to play in Miami for the guy who originally drafted him in NY, Bill Parcells.
It's highly doubtful Miami goes 11-5 last year without Chad Pennington at the helm.
