The 49ers locked up left tackle Joe Staley through the 2017 season with a six-year contract extension the club announced just moments ago.

Staley has played every offensive snap since the 49ers traded up in the first round of the 2007 draft to select him with the No. 28 overall pick. He started at right tackle as a rookie before switching to the left side last season.

"Joe Staley is the type of player we want to continue to add to this football team," 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan said. "He's a tough, versatile, no-nonsense type of guy who wants to do whatever it takes to help his team win football games.

"Joe is a consummate team player and has been completely unselfish in the way he has approached his role on this team. We know what he means to the success of the 49ers and getting this extension done puts us in a very nice position for the future."

Terms of the new deal were not immedidately available. Staley's rookie contract was a five-year, $6.85 million deal that included a $1.1 million signing bonus and a $2.52 million option bonus.

Staley said the 49ers approached him early in the offseason about working out a contract extension. He said he has gotten the indication that this is what the 49ers plan to do with some other players, including linebacker Patrick Willis. The 49ers signed outside linebacker Parys Haralson to an extension earlier this offseason.

"I think it's very important if you are going to build a winning franchise to keep people around here for an extended period of time so you can get used to them," Staley said. "That's how you win games. So I'm excited to get this deal done, and now we can move forward and hopefully get some other guys signed here and move forward."

There was some talk this offseason that if the 49ers drafted or signed a left tackle, they might move Staley back to the right side. However, Staley said he believes he will be the 49ers' left tackle for a long, long time.

"I've had meetings with coaches and the indication is I'm the left tackle here, and that's what I'm going to be," Staley said. "That's my position everybody else can compete for other spots on the line."

* * *UPDATE: ESPN's John Clayton reports the six-year extension includes $42 million in new money, including $18 million guaranteed. If he meets his escalators, he could earn an additional $3 million, according to the report.

* * *UPDATE II: The 49ers had approximately $25 million in cap space when the day began. They wisely worked the extension with Staley to eat into that figure. To lessen the deal's impact on the future, Staley's cap figure this year rises from $1.42 million to $11.6 million. The deal is very similar to what the 49ers did in 2007 with Nate Clements when they gave him a $10M roster bonus that counted immediaely against that year's cap.

I like the long term view the niners are taking with this signing.

Matt, it's great to be able to read your work agian.

Welcome back, Matt.

This is a great signing. They need to continue to lock up the young talent to long-term, relatively cheap contracts.

welcome back MM.......Staley said. "That's my position everybody else can compete for other spots on the line." - Love the confidence, hope it is contagious

I like me some Joe!! Way to go & Congrats. Well deserved. He's a solid OT & consummate pro always staying up with the playbook & maintaining his craft. Biggest strength: DURABILITY. Nice work. Good luck for a continued healthy & solid season. No more constant 7 step drops & now 2 years in a row at the same spot should make a big difference in lowering his sacks allowed numbers. Keep on working to improve the run blocking. Should get a healthy amount of reps with that this season! Kudos to Paraage as usual & decision by McCloughan. Welcome back Matt.

Don't tell me! Show me! Joe Staley is a pro, and I'm glad he'll be on our side for a few more years.

Hey Matt,

I'm sorry for going a little off-topic here but...What would have to happen for the Forty Niners to stay in San Francisco? And is it still possible to build another stadium in The City? Also, what is the likelihood that the ballot measure concerning the Santa Clara stadium plan does not pass?

answer to all 3 of your questions = $money$

Nobody messes with Joe! Glad to have you back in the saddle again Mr. Maiocco.

Oustanding move!

One key step in building a high quality team is to keep the high quality players you have. Great move.

Welcome back Matt!
Great signing with Staley! He's one of the guys that can make the offensive line become a winning unit that can stay together for some time to come. And when an offensive line stays together, it works better and better. Look at the great teams the 49ers had and the great offensive lines that kept them great.

Good to have you back, Matt!
Its also good to see the niners being proactive in getting young players signed to extensions, and really solidfying the nucleus with talented and good character athletes. Hopefully Alex Boone can get his act together and live up to his potential. I am excited about the potential of our o-line this year and the years to come.

Great signing! Showing a player like Staley how much he means to the 49ers is important. Great player and a great guy. Excited about our line. I really hope Marvel Smith works out for us. I think we are solid at every other position on the line and Rachal is an absolute beast.

.....In 2009, the 49ers will send out an offensive line averaging about 320 pounds. Left tackle Joe Staley checks in at 318, left guard David Baas is a massive 335, center Eric Heitmann goes 315, right guard Chilo Rachal is a robust 335, Marvel Smith is 321 and right tackle Adam Snyder is 330............

..nice

Ditto. They're pretty athletic too. W/ Vernon and Bear at TE, the line should expect to be pretty nasty in '09 and beyond.

Now if Smith and Boone can hold down the right tackle spot then we will fear no one. Goes without saying but welcome back Matt.

The O Line has been consistently the worst at pass protection in the NFL over the last four years. Changing the offensive scheme will help, but they have to play better. Let's prove it on the field in real games first.

I think thew O line will be a strength of the team this year and in years to come.
This is the best group they have had starting in about a decade !

In John Crumpacker's story in the Chron on this topic he says that Baas was extended. If this is true it hasn't been reported elsewhere that I know of. Can you confirm or deny?

Newsome said recently that a stadium is not high on his list. I think he's given up. Feinstein stepping in attempting to effect change ticked me off, she a state senator, not just SF, and this, apparently, did no good. In my opinion, for SF to even get further consideration, it would have to be rejected by the SC voters. In my opinion, there is a better chance of the measure passing in SC than SF.

Great move Niners. With Jed, McCloughan and Singletary leading this franchise, the future looks bright!

Willis should be next!

Eric Heitmann is considered one of the 2 best offensive centers in the NFL. You hear most NFL experts agree with this. In almost all the games the color commentaters bring this up to viewers of the 49er games. And any one who watches him play can see it easily. Center is the guy who calls the check downs and his plate is full on every play! Heitmann is lights out!
And just a question. Is the NFL Network owned by the Dallas Cowboys? I mean, just about everyday they carry Dallas Cowboy news, games, over and over again! Anybody notice this or is it just that I hate the Cowboys so much!

I have actually thought Heitmann is the weak link on the O line for a long time. He always gets pushed back into the QB's face and leaves no pocket to step up into. I am sure he is good at calling the line signals but each year I hope and wait to see him come into camp as a stronger and stouter pass blocker and every year he lets me down. I hear all the talk about how he is one of the best Centers in the League every year and i laugh. I think to myself that some coaches must be trying to talk up Heitmann to give him confidence or something and that word spreads around to the announcers. I am still waiting for him to be a good blocker and keep the pass rushers out of Hills face. When that starts happening more often then I might agree with those so called experts who call him one of the best. (if he is so good why doesn't he make the pro bowl ? lol)
