If you want to see the 49ers practice during training camp, we have two words that might be helpful: Good luck. The 49ers have announced only four practices this summer will be open to the general public.

(The 49ers and their South Bay media partner, the San Jose Mercury News, have devised a system for allocating the tickets to the four practice sessions. Click here for all the information.)

Back in the days when the 49ers had training camp in Rocklin and Stockton, every practice was open to the public. And because of the ample seating capacities at Sierra College and University of the Pacific, nobody got turned away.

The 49ers are one of 13 teams in the NFL to hold training camp at the same location as their in-season practice facility because of convenience and cost.

This will be the fifth year the 49ers have held training camp in Santa Clara at their practice facility at the cul-de-sac on Centennial Boulevard. They have opened approximately a dozen practices every summer with attendees required to hold a ticket for admittance.

This summer, the 49ers' complex is undergoing a significant remodel. Because of the on-going construction, the 49ers are opening just two days to the public. Both practices on Saturday, Aug. 1, and Saturday, Aug. 8, are scheduled to be open.

The team is scheduled to conduct two days of workouts this summer with the Raiders in Napa. The 49ers will have double-day practices with the Raiders on Tuesday, Aug. 18, and Wednesday, Aug. 19. Those practices will be closed to the public. The 49ers and Raiders play Saturday, Aug. 22, in the exhibition season.

The 49ers have all but three of their draft picks signed. There does not figure to be any problems getting running back Glen Coffee and quarterback Nate Davis signed to their deals. I've heard those contracts are pretty much completed, other than waiting for a few more draft picks to sign in the third and fifth rounds to finalize the exact amount of their signing bonuses.

Receiver Michael Crabtree, chosen No. 10 overall, will be the final 49ers pick to sign. Niners rookies are scheduled to report Tuesday, July 28, for training camp. The negotiations with the 49ers and Crabtree's agent, Eugene Parker, are expected to heat up in the days leading up to the reporting date, as more top-10 draft picks sign their deals to establish the slotting.

Ahhh Slotting, the sound of coins, in extremely large denominations, making the familiar Cha-Ching sound that signals the running of the Rookies into Summer Camps.

Hi Matt,

I've never been inside the 4949 Centennial Blvd facility, but the Google satellite images show three football fields on the southern side of the complex, and what appear to be three soccer fields to the north. Any idea if the 49ers own those as well, and how they use that part of the field?!

Question for Matt:

We know 49ers had a much better W-L record in the second half of the 2008 season (5-3) than in the first half (2-6); and we know that QB Shaun Hill had a pretty good year after being inserted as starter in game 9 - He posted a passer rating of 87.5 to rank an impressive 12th among NFL QBs.

OTOH, 49ers scored fewer points in the second half (168) than they did in the first half (171), while the defense yielded only 151 points in the final 8 games compared to 230 points in the first 8 games. Does this mean that virtually all of the second half improvement was attributable to the defense?

Can you, or perhaps even the 49ers PR dept, dredge up some more detailed stats comparing the first half with the second half for both offense & defense? Specifically, I'd like to see the comparisons for the following categories:

OFFENSE (Games 1-8 vs 9-16):

Points scored (by offense, excluding def & special team points)

Total Yards

Rush Yards

Rush Yards per Carry

Pass Yards

Passer Rating

Sacks Yielded

Turnovers Yielded

DEFENSE (Games 1-8 vs 9-16):

Points yielded (by Defense, excluding def & special team points)

Total Yards Yielded

Rush Yards Yielded

Opponents Rush Yards per Carry

Pass Yards Yielded

Opponents Passer Rating

Sacks Achieved

Turnovers Achieved

Big job, Matt, but I'm sure the stats exist somewhere, and I seem to recall you complaining about the absence of stuff to write about this time of year :-).

I miss Stockton {sniff}.

i read this - "Stat gurus at Football Outsiders predict rough 2009 for 49ers"

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/49ers/2009/07/13/stat-gurus-at-football-outsiders-predict-rough-2009-for-49ers/

And i am starting to doubt if we can make it.....i think we need more experienced players

"Much has been made of Hill’s 7-3 record as the 49ers starter, but it is misguided enthusiasm. Two of his wins came against last year’s 2-14 Rams. Two more came against teams with nothing to play for, including the 2007 Buccaneers, who were actively resting all their players. That leaves Hill with a win over the Bengals in 2007 and victories over the Bills and Jets last year, in which the team scored a combined 54 points. Color us impressed. "

Cody, All you have to do is remember JTO's turnovers to make sense of those comparisons.

Very good point RK. JTO was the gift that kept giving to the opponents defense.... "Here you take the ball!"

Look, as I have told you, you can play this game all day long.

Hill had two victories against the 2-14 Rams in 2008? So did Kurt Warner.

As I have previously stated, Hill has a higher winning percentage against winning teams than does Kurt Warner in the past two years.

It (of course) doesn't mean that Hill is better than Warner. It just shows how stupid that argument is.

Let's look at Warner in 2007, OK.
Kurt replaced an injured Matt Leinart after the fifth game of the season.

Warner started 11 games in 2007, winning 5 and losing 6.

The 5 wins?

They Cards beat:

1. The 3-13 Rams
2. The 4-12 Falcons (with interim HC Emmmitt Thomas who replaced Bobby Petrino).
3. The 7-9 Lions
4. The 7-9 Bengals
5. The 10-6 Browns.

Warner beat ONE team with a winning record.
His line-up reads like this:
Rams, Falcons, Bengals, Lions & Browns.

Not exactly a murderer's row of NFL teams.

I like how Barnwell contradicts himself by basically saying (paraphrasing), Hill is a terrible QB. But then he says that after Singletary took over (which coincides with Hill's start) the 49ers passed more often on 1st down, went to 5 wide more often and were a more successful passing team in the second half than the first half of the season. Umm, really?

And the end line in the piece is just precious, which is why I love these self-proclaimed genius gestimators and pontificators. He says throughout the whole article that the 49ers stink as much as the 08 Lions, but at the end says "if everything goes right, they could make a playoff run." What?! The 08 Lions couldn’t have made a playoff run if their QB was Jesus! Somebody tell this guy to go sit down somewhere and have a coke and a smile, please!

One and a half months until September.

They gave the Titans last year only a 4% chance to win 11+ games. The Titans won 13 and had the best record in the NFL in 2008.

They gave the Steelers an 8% chance to win 11+ games. The Steelers were 12-4 and of course won it all.

Chill. He just quoted part of the Football Outsiders article.

The Lions may have gotten to the playoffs if not only Jesus was their QB. But if also... somehow they went back in time and had Barry Sanders from 1994 :)

He quoted a stupid part, that's all.

You can use that argument to diminish Hill AND you can use it to diminish a guy like Kurt Warner.

So what's the point?

After the past season Ron Jaworski said that Warner has played the QB position about as well as anyone in the NFL has in 2007/2008.

Funny. I didn't hear Jaworski say a word about 'who Warner beat.'

I wonder why?

...am not sure why your pants are so hot...

you said yourself --"It (of course) doesn't mean that Hill is better than Warner."

.....so if i was to disregard the analysis, and go with your statement - i see no reason to believe Hill wasn't a misguided enthusiasm.

and its actually comparing oranges and apples

K.Warner is proven, Hill is not -

..my doubts are just growing stronger..

it seems we have have boys on our team - compared to cowboys or steelers who seem to have lots of men

luck is the only thing that can help us...

Oooohhh I know u didn't just praise the Cowboys up in here...

I hope you have a Big Glass of water next to you because you're going to be eatin' a lot of BIG WORDS come midseason

..not praising the cowgrls....as much as i hate to say it those guys look the part of a tough football team compared to our team...

just thinking about DeMarcus Ware alone - scares me

I can't think of anybody on our defense that is on the same level as him......

It never ceases to amaze me how/why this goes over so many heads.

My comment has NOTHING to do as far as a comparison between Warner and Hill. That's not even close.

My comment has EVERYTHING to do with this:

Using 'who a QB beat' really is kind of faulty.
Yeah, it looks good when it discredits a guy like Hill. However, it DOESN'T look very good when that same criteria discredits a guy like Kurt Warner.

That's all.

P. Willis is a way better football player than Ware. I wouldn't want to take a hit from Clements either. Fowlboys will be average in that division. I predict 8 wins for those slappies.

Let's get off this bandwagon and start another...

I CANNOT wait for the pads to come on. I wanna see if Coffee is as strong as we all hope and see what Sheets can do.

But what I really want to see... is how Crabtree does when Clements lines up on him. We still haven't even seen him catch a ball

soccer fields are for youth activities, no apparent association to the 9ers, not sure who owns, but probably the city

49_Cents_Worth,

The soccer fields are part of the Santa Clara youth soccer complex, and they are not owned or used by the 49ers.

Santa Clara has a prety good youth soccer program BTW, not that that is relevant to the Niners.

Cody,

First off, why 1-8 and 9-16 rather than 1-7 and 8-16. Singletary was interim coach in week 8 against the Seachickens, and Nolan had been sacked. Singletary should not get a pass for the rediculous travesty, the farce of a football game, that happened that day.

Don't know all of the answers but I have some of them. Everything below is average yards per game excepts sacks, TOs, and TOP.

Niners Offense
Games 1-7 | 8-16
Total 299 | 308
Rush 102 | 91
Pass 197 | 217
Sacks 4 | 2.5
Turnovers 2.5 | 1.7
TOP 28:28| 30:04

Niners Defense/Opp Offense
Games 1-7 | 8-16
Total 339 | 315
Rush 132 | 110
Pass 217 | 205
Sacks 2 | 2.3
Turnovers 1.4 | 1.1
TOP 32:12| 29:41

So they improved in every category there except rushing yards and turnovers forced. The rushing yards per game is skewed though because they gained 182 agains the Lions in week 3. Another thing to note is that in the first 7 weeks they allowed 100+ rushing yards every single game. In the final 9 weeks they only allowed 100+ yards rushing 4 times.

If I had to guess I would say that it is the fact that they ran more often and had more TOP and fewer turnovers. Another factor is the competition was worse, but that in and of itself can be decieving because the first Rams game was 35-3 at halftime, but the Rams ended up with 406 yards total offense. The Bills also gained 350 some yards. So the defense gave up a lot of yards, but they won both games.

Guys,

Check out what Sing had to say on the Dan Patrick Show. More than ever I'm very impressed with how Sing carries himself.

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nfcwest/0-9-360/Singletary-says-his-style-suited-for-the-NFL.html?username=nfcwest&post=true&archiveId=9&bId=0&entryId=360&sort=oldest

I disagree with your premise on Hill and his wins. Anyone who bets on the games will agree that no matter who you play in the NFL, from week to week, each game is different and the outcomes can amaze you, or the NFL would be boring and it would be useless to play games. Not to say that records and stats don't mean anything, but when the two teams line up, the outcome is not a cinch.
I'm not saying Hill will or should be the starter. But using your formula of who's a cinch win is blown apart weekly in games in the NFL.
Let's ease off on Hill and Smith until they have the chance to show who they are and what they can do in the real games.

Accept my apology! I didn't see that you were quoting that stupid site you gave us! I guess if I go by that book, I'll become a rich man this fall! YEA RIGHT! Why these so called experts don't just give us the stats and shut up about the rest, just shows they want to make money!
Apologies to you, again!

Did anybody see "Home Coming" on ESPN last week? They had a Jerry Rice career Show. It was kind of a praise and roast of Jerry at the same time. What impressed me besides seeing some of the old 49ers together again, was MS!
When the 49ers invited Jerry to camp to give a pep talk and let the players see a 49er Hall of Famer talk about the teams winning tradition in the past, MS was all business. When showing a picture of the Championship game when the 49ers beat the Bears in Chicago below zero atmosphere (with MS at ML)it seemed MS remembered the game against Jerry and was pretty business like instead of fawning over Jerry and saying all the nice things people are supposed to say to a star. I loved it!!! I love Jerry, don't get me wrong, but the personality of MS doesn't change no matter who he's in front of!! Got to give kudos to MS!!

Uh yes. Willis is to MLBs what Ware is to OLBs. HOFer Rod Woodson, Ray Lewis' biggest fan, ranked Lewis the second best linebacker in the NFL behind Willis on NFL Network recently.

Also, I don't want to mess with Clements either, or Justin Smith for that matter. I'd love to hear someone call either one of those guys a bust.

Oneniner's right about one thing though: them Boys LOOK the part of a tough team. Too bad they don't play like it. Go Niners!

I'll roll will Justin Smith over Ware anyday of the week especially on Sundays.

Does anyone have the code for the Mercury news access to get training camp tickets? I am out of town and this place does not have a Mercury copy, and I do not do Facebook. Please help

The Football Outsiders are always wrong and as the old saying goes " There are lies and there are damned lies and then worst of all there are statistics" They rely on statistics and seem pretty ignorant of the real world situation.
They don't call them the outsiders for nothing. I want my info coming from insiders, thank you !.

And Hill is a better QB than Smith, plain and simple. No real contest ,unless Smith is going to bring someting much much better to the competition than he has ever shown before. We will know in a month or so.

Just so I understand you, CAT, Hill is better than Smith, no doubt at all, unless he isn't. Got it.

steveG is right - Willis is to MLBs what Ware is to OLBs

I thought about Justin Smith .....

...but ....Ware because i believe on the field he has more possibilities to create turnovers which turn into points

Niner tough guys - pound for pound any given sunday this guys know what they are doing on the field...

J. Smith
Willis
Clements
Lewis
Gore
Bruce
Heitmann
V Davis* - (do i really need to explain the *)

Future tough guys
Morgan
Rachal
Haralson
Staley

We need more tough guys - our season really depends on how well our young backups play.

Looking at the roster we r still stuck in the cycle of hope..

I say McGm needs to pull a trade....or bring in FA's (DT Thornton is out there)

Yawn.

Could the last one to leave hit the lights on the way out? See you back on 8/9.

I can dig it. Until proven otherwise, these guys are just good on paper. I'm hoping that with a better defensive scheme though these guys can be put in the right position to be succesful.

Anyone else notice the eyes of intensity of Justin Smith, kinda like our head coach.

..talking about the cowgrls ...looks like coach sing will announce our starting QB after we play them in pre-season...

...oooh....this guy is talking smack already

Darnell Dockett of the Arizona Cardinals sounds ready for the regular season to get going. Dockett via Twitter: "LIstening to YOUNG JEZZY, mannn I'm getting this feeling to destroy something where them damn 49ers @. They 49ers better hope this CD breaks."

Bring it on Duschett - We will be ready

Comment: looks like coach sing will announce our starting QB after we play them in pre-season...

My response: Actually, the 49ers plan to decide on a starting quarterback no later than after the SECOND exhibition game. It makes no sense to wait any later to name the starter. Mike Singletary wants the starters on the field for the bulk of the third exhibition game before giving them a rest in the final tuneup. --Matt M.

I'm sorry, but I'm starting to develop a level of disdain for the AZ Fraudinals thats almost at a Cowboy level. Can't wait 'till I go to the season opener in AZ.

Yeah, look how tough those Cowpokers did in the playoffs last year. Oh, that's right. They were too busy playing Jones's version of Total Drama American Idol Bachelorette, and it got in the way of their playoff run.

Wade Phillips will never get that team anywhere.

Skeebers and Ninerfan. Long time . . .

chucksninerland.blogspot.com

Come on down. Geo, where's Spitblood?

...AZ is like the kid you crush everytime in madden, who finally won 1 game and can't stop talking about how better he his now..

there is no respect for AZ...just like the sorry rams they will be back where they belong - back of the buz
