During those four days, the rookies will take part in conditioning, weight-room training and thorough classroom work, a club spokesman said. The rookies will learn the team's procedures and rules so everybody knows precisely what is expected of them.
Three of the 49ers' rookies remain unsigned. It is common for teams to get their first-round picks signed just under the wire - or shortly thereafter.
Word is that the deals for third-round pick Glen Coffee and fifth-rounder Nate Davis are nearly completed. Both sides are just waiting for a few more players chosen in those rounds to sign in order to solidify the exact amount of their signing bonuses.
With first-round selection Michael Crabtree, it will probably take a little longer. After all, only two first-round selections have signed their deals - both quarterbacks. No. 1 overall pick Matthew Stafford signed with the Lions before the draft, and the Jets have inked Mark Sanchez.
After the Coffee and
The 49ers were allotted $4.1 million in the rookie salary pool. They've used 34 percent of that figure for the draft picks who have signed, as well as their crop of undrafted rookies. The 49ers have $2.69 million in 2009 cap room available for Crabtree, Coffee and
Crabtree's cap figure this year will be what's left after Coffee and
In 2007, guaranteed money for first-round picks averaged $10.853 million. Last year, the average climbed 9.1 percent to $11.912 million. A similar increase this year would mean approximately $15 million guaranteed in Crabtree's deal.
I asked one NFL insider if it Crabtree's agent, Eugene Parker, could ask for the kind of money the Raiders will give Darrius Heyward-Bey, the No. 7 pick. Because the perception is that Crabtree should've been the first receiver selected, could Parker ask for a contract equal to or greater than Heyward-Bey's?
"No," the source said. "That's not logical. If that were the case, Aaron Rodgers should've gotten $23.99 million (in 2005)."

Since 2005, the 49ers have gotten their draft picks into camp on time the past four years. Prior to that, first-round selections Mike Rumph (2002) missed three practices, Kwame Harris (2003) got his deal done after the first practice, and Rashaun Woods (2004) sat out one day.
Clearly, those were bad omens.

Six teams will begin training camp this week. The Browns' rookies are scheduled to report on Friday. The Bills, Texans, Patriots, Eagles and Chargers get going this weekend.
Seventeen clubs will stay home to train this summer. In 2000, only four teams stayed close to home for training camp. The 49ers have held training camp at their

Rumph, Harris, Woods, thanks for the stroll down memory lane
Matt,
I know this questions has been asked before, but why is training camp continued to be held at Santa Clara? Is it that expensive for the 9ers to have their practices out of the Bay Area? My thinking is, while the team won't be making any immediate money from playing out of area when you factor moving expenses, but what you gain is the camaraderie among the players going through training camp together and the team reaching out to out of area fans.
Do you think Jed would consider moving training camp out of area again? Can you ask, please?
Thanks for the good work!
I understand why everyone is waiting to see what the market is going to bear, but sometimes I get the sense that everyone else is waiting for everyone to sign and so no one is signed. If there is no progress elsewhere in the league in a couple of days, we should just go ahead and set the market. It is going to be +/- such a marginal amount anyway, they should just get it done. With the rookie pool set, there isn't a huge amount of wiggle room to be done,
Matt, why don't teams start training camp at the exact same time?
TC opening dates are different because of NFL rules. Teams can only start camp a certain time period before their first preseason game. so, because of the exhibition schedule, camps open at different times
If Crabtree isn't signed by the start of camp, is he barred from practicing as well? I'm just wondering, if they're close to a deal but he wants to take part in practices while the two sides hammer out final details can he do that?
Nubba dubba, bubba. No signee, no workee.
Rumph, Harris & Woods, kind of gives you a warm fuzzy feeling for the job Terry Donahue (football expert) did and never seems to get much credit for. Millen or Donahue wow ! Who did a better job? I'll take any growing pains with Scott McC.
Can't wait to see if the Niners finally got a playmaker with their No. 1 pick.
Thanks Jon in SoCal. Makes sense to me.
I don't forsee any problem getting Crabtree signed before TC. McC has done a great job getting the 1st round picks in on time. TC can't come fast enough!
Agreed TC can't come soon enough. Crabtree should sign quickly as he has got to be chomping at the bit to get on the field to show what he can do as well as catching up to solidify his spot as a starter.
Question: Matt, I know this questions has been asked before, but why is training camp continued to be held at Santa Clara?
My response: Cost and convenience. It's the trend in the NFL, with more than half the teams now holding training camp at their year-round practice facilities. --Matt M.
Question: Matt, why don't teams start training camp at the exact same time?
My response: I don't know. I think it's a bad rule. The rule is that teams can open camp no earlier than 15 days before their first exhibition game. The rule should be like college. Every team should open on the same day. That way every team have a level playing field. --Matt M.
Wow, I completely agree with you. It makes sense that teams start a certain amount of time before the exhibition opener, but I sure wish everyones exhibition opener was at the same time.
I am sure that Goodell will address this when the owners extend the season to 20 games
If I remember correctly, Training Camp only allows players under contract to participate. In theory, Mike Crabtree could hold out the entire season and re-enter next year's draft, right?
crabtree is a cowboy fan? what a shame
i know right.....i tried to ignore that
....maybe this will be motivation when he plays them....just like T.O was..
anyone catch T.O reality show last nite?
Jeremy Newberry retires
...how many yrs did he spend with the niners
No, I think once you're drafted you are no longer eligible for the draft. Anyway, why would Crabtree want to do that? If anything would cement "diva" status, that would be it.
Why do i get the feeling the media will be reporting next yr..
.."The niner Qb is in the pro-bowl because the 49ers finally have WR's to throw to"...
...A.Smith once considered a bust is now a pro thanks to the Wr's....
The media is so predictable..
Mateo, Regarding staying local for training camps... Do players who have homes in the area get to go home? I would assume this is the only cost (+ travel) associated with having training camp off site. If not, how else are the teams saving money by having a local training camp?
Also, are all rookies required to stay in a local hotel like Boone?
Rashaun Woods never recovered from missing that first day of camp. That's what the problem was!
Jeez. Worst 1st rounder in Niner history?
"In theory, Mike Crabtree could hold out the entire season and re-enter next year's draft, right?"
Correct. If I remember correctly, this has happened in the past. John Elway was going to do this if the Colts didn't trade him, but I can't remember who actually went through with it.
From ehow and confirmed on numerous sites...
"NFL rules state that a player that is drafted but does not wish to sign with the team that selected him can decide to "hold out" for a year and then be eligible to re-enter the draft the next year."
I can't see a player doing this, however... it would REALLY put off teams the next year. Who would want to waste a pick and have the same thing happen to them?
I think Elway's threat was to play baseball.
my daughter mentioned the TO show, I told her not in my house, I'll want NOTHING to do with bringing that guy anything. I know it's probably a pipe dream, but I really hope his behaviour keeps him from going to the HOF, can you imagine his speech? Excuse me, I'm hacking up my lunch
