Quarterback Nate Davis, a fifth-round pick from
Only receiver Michael Crabtree (first round) and running back Glen Coffee (third round) remain unsigned among the 49ers' draft picks. Coffee is nearing a contract agreement, and is definitely expected to be signed before rookies are scheduled to report on Tuesday.
The 49ers waived safety Lewis Baker, a first-year player from

I hope they keep Davis. We know what Huard can do and what he cannot do. We don't know that of Davis.
Just got my tickets for the MN game on the 29th of Sept. 4 rows behind the Vikings bench. Can't wait to chat with Farve, the Steroid twins, and the rest of the gang.
Is it just me, or can training camp not start soon enough!
Hey Matt, who do you think the 49ers plan to release to make room for Coffee and Crabtree once they sign? Have they placed Walt Harris on IR yet? That would create a roster spot as would putting someone on the PUP, like Ray McDonald.
Question: who do you think the 49ers plan to release to make room for Coffee and Crabtree once they sign?
My response: They have yet to place Walt Harris on IR. That would create a roster spot to get the team down to 80 (after Crabtree and Coffee sign). Players can be placed on PUP only at the start of camp, but it does not save a roster spot until the start of the regular season, if the player remains unable to perform up to that point. If the team is confident that Crabtree, Battle and Jason Hill can stand up to a lot of practice time, they can part ways with a receiver. --Matt M.
Folks-Davis stays with the team. I saw a ton of MAC games this past year and this kid can ball. He faded in the stretch as did the Ball State team. Don't count him out.
Huard makes for nice depth, but Davis is far more important. The chances of resigning Huard, or a comparable QB, are better than keeping Davis on the practice squad.
Matt - Can you explain to me the reason to keep 3 veteran QB's on the active 53 man roster. If this team (or any team in the NFL for that matter) is down to the third qb they are going nowhere fast. Huard would not do anything to help them save a season. Why risk losing Davis to another team by putting him on the PS. Sure we could move him later to the 53 man and cut Huard but why not do that already at the start of the season. I think they would be able to sign Huard anyway if things got that bad. I know this front office is smarter than keeping Huard on the team heading into the first game of the season.
Maybe the Niners try to motivate Davis by putting him on the very edge of the roster. Just to make sure that he doesn't take a nap. I think that if he responds the right way, he'll be on the 53-roster instead of Huard. If not, then he is not ready to be a NFL-Quarterback anyway.
Davis is not going anywhere IMHO. He will be taken if is he is put on the practice squad. He is the future playmaker at the position. Whether his future is good or bad no one can say at this point, but rest assured he will get an oppurtunity.
I'm with Razor, there's no way they expose Davies.
Whether or not they enter the season with 4 QB's on the roster I think depends on Smith's performance or the guy that will be ranked #54. I think Huard stays in any scenario. To me, Smith is on the hot seat. If he fails to dazzle or gets re-injured, he's a goner. That's unless #54 ain't worth keeping around. Whoever that poor schmuck ends up to be.
Hey it's great that the 49ers signed their 5TH ROUND DRAFT PICK! but lets try to keep everything in perspective here. Some of you seem to think that Davis is the 2nd coming of Montana without snapping his 1st NFL ball. I gotta be honest here I had never seen any of Davis college football games but that's really not the point here. There's a reason why McC signed Huard in FA, it's because he has NFL experience and alot of it I might add. So I might be wrong & I'll be the first to admit It but I don't see Davis taking alot of snaps in Pre-Season when most of the snaps are going to go to the QB battle between Hill & Smith. Huard is going to need some snaps so where does that leave Davis in these Pre-Season games?
We're good. The Baker cut leaves SF with 81 players, of which Crabtree/Coffee are unsigned but W-Harris/R-Mac are also likely to begin camp on active-PUP (until they can pass a medical). Active-PUP is different from reserve-PUP, which is for the regular season.
Depth-wise, I must say we appear overloaded at RB (Gore, Coffee, M-Rob, Clayton, Sheets & -- with Brit Miller added behind Norris at FB -- possibly Keasey returning to his old utility RB-FB role.)
Active-PUP, the designation for an injured player during training camp, does not save a roster spot. Players who report to camp with injuries are placed on active-PUP. The only way a player can go on Reserve-PUP at the start of the season (becoming eligible to return after six weeks) is if he goes on PUP at the beginning of training camp. If a player remains on PUP for the regular season, his roster spot does not count. But during camp, he counts toward the 80-man limit. --Matt M.
Yep,Davis has it all. He has a much better arm than Smith and at least as quick a release and accuracy and leadership and all the intangebles as Hill has. Of course nobody ever knows if a player with great skills like "davis will ever reach his potential in the NFL. BUT it would be a HUGE risk to put a player with that type of skil set on the practice aquad and risk losing him to another team who needs a 3rd string QB to bring along for their future (like the Niners need ).Davis is the only QB on the roster who can become the Franchise QB of the future. If he shows his promise we won't need to waste those 2 #1 picks next year on a Franchise QB,who probably won't have any better skills than Davis anyway. DON'T RISK PUTTING HIM ON THE PS !!!
My understanding is that if a player is put on the PS that he must first go through waivers and any team can grab him for free and there is nothing we can do about it . Better to dump Smith or Huard and if necessary bring back Huard or Smith or another vet later if Hill (the starter) gets hurt.
Davis will in no way be ready to be the backup this year but by next season he will be ready to be at least the #2 and possibly the starter if he progresses more quickly than anticipated. Davis is the only guy we have now that can be THE MAN. Don't take a chance on losing him before we even find out if he will or will not be that guy !
