Jones expected to be out 8 weeks

Coach Mike Singletary said he expects receiver Brandon Jones to be out eight weeks with a small fracture of his right shoulder.

Jones, who had been among the team's standouts through the first week of training camp, sustained the injury while attempting a diving catch in the end zone during a 7-on-7 drill on Thursday.

With Jones out and Michael Crabtree without a contract, the 49ers have seen their depth at receiver reduced. Isaac Bruce, Josh Morgan, Arnaz Battle, Jason Hill and Dominique Zeigler comprise the team's top wideouts.

If Jones remains on his eight-week recovery schedule, he would be available the first week of October, missing regular-season games against Arizona, Seattle and Minnesota. No surgery will be required, Singletary said.

Through the first six days of training camp, Jones had caught the second-most number of passes among the wide receivers behind, surprisingly, Isaac Bruce. Jones appeared to be the team's best deep threat, as he and Alex Smith teamed regularly on the long ball.

Bruce led the wideouts through six days with 13 receptions, followed by Jones (11), Zeigler (9), Morgan (7), Battle (6) and Hill (5).

Hi Matt, this is my first post.

First I wanted to say that I recently moved to Windsor from Redding and I drive by the Press Democrat building in Santa Rosa all the time. Hopefully one day I'll be able to meet you and tell you what a great writer you are.

Okay now for my 49er question, with Battle being on the team for so long and being a consisitent receiver that has good hands and had been a good blocker - do you expect the 49ers to keep Battle over Zeigler on the 53 man roster? Or do you think they give him the boot for Zeigler because of the potential he has shown, and because he is younger?

Speculate: if crabtree re-enters next year, would he go higher than 10?

This is terrible news, especially considering all the progress Jones was showing at the beginning of camp. Stack another bargaining chip on Crabtree's side - this oughta encourage the 49ers to pony up some more cash to get the rookie in camp and maintain WR depth.

Matt,
If the Crabtree talks linger do you think the 49ers would consider calling Denver or Arizona and inquire about a Crabtree trade for either Marshall or Boldin?

Matt is Nate Davis, still throwing with gloves?

Barrows is reporting the Crabtree will be out 2 weeks, but I'll expect the worst and take your word for it Maiocco.

oops...I meant to say Jones...I got Crabtree on the mind

No......y ...y.....y...

Alex Smith was looking good with him on the field.....

That sucks. I was really looking forward to watching Jones and Morgan tear it up... Well, at least Ziggy should now be assured a roster spot. Crabtree who? That gold digger is a bum.

No way. He would be anywhere from late 1st to early 2nd. Niners retain his rights til the draft which means he can't meet with other teams or work out for them.

As unfortunate as it is with Jones going down for several weeks it does give Ziegler a better chance of making the active roster while possibly putting Jones on IR after the last cut of Pre-Season. These things tend to work themselves out.

>Speculate: if crabtree re-enters next year, would he go higher than 10?

He will not sit out the year. The "threat" is a bluff.

If he would actually do so he may get picked in round 7. More likely, he would not get picked at all.

Terrible, but could always be worse. Have a speedy rcovery Jonsey, keep yer head up!

Could have been worse. At least he'll have fresh legs late into the season. I don't think this effects the way we are proceeding with Mr. Crabs. If another receiver goes down then yes our position is weakened.

Speculate: The only way he would reenter next years draft is if he can make more money than is currently being offered.

IF he did have that happen and IF there was not a salary cap instigated then Crabtree would have to go in the first 3-4 picks or he wouldn't go at all. Considering the talent coming out next year he wont go #1-4

So then why would anyone waste a draft pick on a player that would still demand top 3 players money even next year.

Unless he was picked top 3 how could a team pay him that type of money or even take the chance he doesn't do the same song and dance with them that he is doing with the 9ers.

So if he is lucky he would go 7th Round and if not he would not go at all. Other picks are too valuable to risk on a known holdout.

I'm not totally sure about this, but I think if he is put on IR, he is lost for the season.

This does suck though. After the 49ers were bashed for the Jones acquisition, I was really happy seeing him excel in camp and looking forward to him being a bigger part of the offense than he ever was for the Titans.

Get better quick Brandon.

And also -- the niners need to get Ziegler on the roster...

1. I don't believe this will be a hold out for the entire season.
2. If it were and he went into next year's draft there will be a team take a shot well before round 7.

Who was the RB that Shanahan drafted while at Denver that was a known problem case? The kid out of Ohio? I think he was picked in the 3rd round, given his shot, never made the team.

2005 Maurice Clarett

Matty,
That position is like the Defense against the Dark Arts teacher in Harry Potter, It's cursed! We can never build it up.

Ya I wasn't sure about that barley,

I couldn't remember if the 49ers put Jones on IR before or after the last cut he could come back. Come to find out if the 49ers put him on IR now before the last cut he could come back in 6 weeks. He's more likely to go the PUP where he would come back 8 weeks later.

Michael Crabtree may not feel the same after hearing Davis' comments to ESPN's Colleen Dominguez Friday.

"[Crabtree] needs to get his butt here and help this team out," Davis said. "He has a chance to be a big-time player. He should take what he can get, and get here."

.....Davis is becoming a leader - So far Sing is rubbing off him.

in 2 weeks we play ball with nolan....

at least hes not out for the season, we still got some weapons at WR but hopefully he comes back and has a great rest of the season.

Surprised that Bruce is catching the most balls???

He's the Niner's #1 receiver last year and he's the #1 this year. So why the surprise?

And let's all cut out the drivel about how wonderful this year's receiving corps is. It's not. It consists of a future first round HOF that's someway beyond his best, a #3 receiver free agent and a couple 2nd & 3rd year prospects. That adds up to one of the weakest units in the NFL.

WR rookie's don't do much so I'm discounting Crabtree for this year.

Actually, it's one week ;-) Can't freakin' wait!!

oneniner,
will you root for the 49ers or your dad's defense next Friday night??

Question: Surprised that Bruce is catching the most balls??? He's the Niner's #1 receiver last year and he's the #1 this year. So why the surprise?

My response: Good question. Generally, a veteran such as Bruce would not get a whole lot of action in 11-on-11 drills. Last summer, he rarely practiced twice on the same day. During the exhibition season, he caught just two passes. But Bruce has taken part in every practice, and he looks great. --Matt M.

Realfan: As long as Morgan does not get hurt we have a pretty darn good looking WR group imho. Of course it was much more experienced and a little better before the Jones injury. And you are correct, the rookie holdout will porobably not contribute a great deal in his first year anyway. And that is partly because we don't NEED him all that much and wouldn't be throwing him in there right away anyway, because we have one seasoned vet and an emerging star in Morgam and another promising youngster in hill and another youngster with glue on his hands,Ziegler, and in 8 weeks another vet who has all the speed and skill we could ask for in a WR.
Crabs will be signed and he will get some time this year BUT unless we lose a couple more WR's to injury he won't be heavily counted on,because we have a good group already. Not great but very good.(but could turn into great if they live up to their potential).

Hi Matt, Can the 49ers place Brandon Jones on the PUP list resulting in him taking up one less roster spot at the beginning of the season? If so, don't you think that would be the best option because he could rejoin the team after week 6 when, hopefully, he has fully recovered?

I think it's extremely unlikely that Crabtree would sit out the whole season to make himself available for next year's draft. Not going to happen.

Matt, what's the history of a first round draft pick sitting out and reentering the draft the following year? Has anyone done so? (This is assuming that he couldn't go back to college or play in NFL Europe, as was probably the case many years ago, though I guess he could play in Canada.) How did that work out for anyone who did that?

Ouch! (B. Jones' injury). Crabtree just got dealt a great hand. Matt, do you have any information regarding Crabtree' foot injury status?
Thanks,

Why does it seem like the 49er receivers get hurt every year leading the team to use the backups? Bad luck I guess! But it seems the receivers have a problem getting through a whole season without spending quite a bit of time on the recovery list.
Where's the head trainer? Let me speak to him!

Crabtree needs to seriously relook at his entourage if this is true: http://tinyurl.com/n5rego
Oh, Mike Leach has gotta own Eric Magnini an apology too ....

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps the difference is that this year Bruce needs to learn the offense, last year he didn't.
