Exhition 4: Niners at S.D.

FIRST QUARTER

--Opening kickoff: The 49ers have T.Brown, McKillop, Ulbrich, M.Harris, R.Smith, D.Evans, Norris, Balmer, D.Walker, M.Robinson and Rossum. Would anyone who's getting cut be on the No. 1 kick return team?

--The Chargers go with an onside kick, catching Smith sleeping. They recover it. Well, there's an interesting way to open the fourth exhibition game.

--The only starter on defense who's sitting this one out is Justin Smith.

--Dashon Goldson was a little late getting over on a deep ball, but he made a nice, physical play to break up the pass to Malcom Floyd in the end zone.

--Nate Clements was not so lucky. He never turned around for the ball, and Kassim Osgood catches a 39-yard touchdown pass from Billy Volek. And just like that it's CHARGERS 7, 49ERS 0 with 13:04 left in the quarter.

--OK, first thing I notice is Micheal Spurlock is on the field, along with Josh Morgan to start the game. Isaac Bruce and Arnaz Battle are not suiting up. But does this mean Spurlock makes the team. Why wouldn't Jason Hill or Dominique Zeigler be in there if the were going to make the team? Remember, Mike Singletary said he already knows who's going to comprise the final 53 man - with a spot or two still up for grabs.

--Shaun Hill is hit twice. Shawne Merriman got a free shot on him to force incomplete pass. Then, Shaun Phillips spun away from Adam Snyder and a chip block from Coffee to take down Hill on third down.

--Manny Lawson and Isaac Sopoaga are the only starters on the field for the 49ers' defense in the second series.

--Eric Green with good defense on Floyd to force a punt.

--Nate Davis enters, along with a mostly new offensive line: Alex Boone at RT, Matt Spanos at RG, Tony Wragge at C, David Baas at LG, and Barry Sims at LT.

--Davis keeps chains moving with 9-yard pass to Josh Morgan. But on the next time on third-and-4, Coffee is stopped short on draw play.

This game is starting too late, and I'm trying to do too many things. I'm going to shut down the live bloggin' for the evening. I'll check back in after the game.

Matt: Do you know how much of this year's rookie salary pool/cap is remaining?

It was actually one sack...

Matt keep us posted on how Boone is doing

Matt....Please keep us posted on Boone is he holding his own?

Man, I think we're seeing the real 49ers tonight. Ineffective on both sides of the ball. 5-11.

Question: Please keep us posted on Boone is he holding his own?

My response: He's struggling a little. He's having trouble with the quickness of Larry English, and Antwan Applewhite beat him for a sack. --Matt M.

Well it would seem that Ziegler just answered the question of where he's gonna be after that ankle injury... Now it's down to Hill vs Spurlock...

Rayes offense is a joke. Our offense looks like a high school team. Things just keep looking worse all the time.

Matt: Has our first team offense even scored a TD this pre season?

Hey, Tele, this is the second week that you have thrown-in the towel on the Niners season based on one half of play. I would have thought that after last weeks second half comeback win you might have at least waited until the end of the game to press the 'panic' button.

http://www.justin.tv/fortyniner_empire for those who live in Louisiana or away from SF like me

And they wonder why we Niner fans are called Whiner fans, LOL.

Yeah, you stay classy San Diego – with the blackouts. Ridiculous.

Can someone in the Bay area please fill me in on Davis's progress?

check the link and you can wwatch it live

Franchise has answered his own question. Thanks for the tweets MM.

Here's another one from SF_49ers – "Nate Davis' first half stats: 10/14 for 102 yards with 1 TD. His QB rating was 115.8 in the half."

I was always high on Davis when I watched him on ESPN2, but I never expected this kind of progress. He's really grasping Raye's game right now.

Well, it looks like we will get another good slot in the draft next year. Maybe Singletary will spend on a place of need like the O-Line.

Could someone please explain why that fumble recovery was credited to San Diego??

Matt you whimp! C'mon man!@just messing with ya dude. GoodNight 'lil buddy.

Wow!!! people chill...I looked and re-looked at all the people on the O line....all College level players right now!!! 1-2 people will make the team on the 53 man right now! It's ok!!!

Look at the bright side ---- after tonight we won't have to deal with Dennis O'Dummy and Kim ("Purple Eyes") Coyle.

Well I guess we can agree Nate needs some more time to study his picture playbook before we annoint him the savior. I do think he throws a pretty ball though and the kid has some nice instincts. We seemed to come out of the game fairly healthy as well so now it is on to the season. We will bring it against the Cards and start the season off right though the schedule is looking pretty brutal I think we can compete with anybody..GO NINERS!!!!

It makes me laugh that people are so pessimistic about this team. FACT: Our starting qb has the best winning percentage of any starter in the nfc.FACT:No nfc team won more games in the last 7 games in the season than the 49ers.FACT: Martz's offense was the worst fit for our personell and S.Hill, yet we finished the season 5-2.FACT: We have 2 starting RB's, and we intend to run 60% of the time.FACT:Parys Haralson led the nfc west in sacs. FACT:Manny Lawson hasn't played a full season since his rookie year, so what are we judging him on. Even if he can't get to the qb, he's the fastest OLB in football and may be better used in coverage.FACT:Vernon davis will be better than last year, Bruce will be Bruce, and Morgan will also be better. Our starting OL has a year under it's belt, and Snyder much better alternative than Jennings or Smith.
What scares me is raye's ability to call plays. I hate the taser formation w/ Spurlock at qb. We have Battle and MRob who are tougher runners and former college qb's!!! It's not rocket science! Clements also is showing signs of age and that scares me. All in all, we will be at least 8-8, i feel 10-6, but anything less than 8-8 and you could point the finger at our 3rd down conv rate(Rayes ability to call plays) or injuries to our starters(not a good offseason for Mcloughlin and York). We needed a better offseason than a retired backup T, an overpaid injured WR, and no 1st or 2nd round pick which a 7-9 tean needs! That's all for now GO 9ers!

Sing was talking about what a great off season this has been, but where are we better than last year?

He said hit twice and that one forced an incomplete pass. Did you read the article?

Whimper of a finish for Nate in the 2nd half: 3 of 9 for 13 yards & a INT. Actually he was 0 of 5 until the last series, where he threw the pick.

I read that we tested him with the full playbook (aided by the wristband notes). Still a major developmental prospect.

Hard to tell who we are from preseason. Next week it starts for real and I am looking forward to it being decided on the field.

Coffee was our only real improvement and he is a back-up to Gore, Basically they are the same team as last year with a year's development under Coach.

I guess we can finally stop hearing about how Nate Davis should start and is our savior now?

He needs time to learn. He will get that and hopefully come back next year ready to compete for the starting job.

Overall, this looks like a 6 win team at best to me. If that is the case, McCloughan needs to be fired and a new GM brought in. Not addressing the same needs we've had forever is incompetence.

LAsam: As I have said from the start,Davis is the best talent on the roster by far,but is raw and should not start until he learns foe a while. But he is still the probable savior of the team,as you put it,just not yet.
And Montana to Rice,I agree with mostly all you said except I think McGloughan had a fine off season and is right on track to make the team a constant playoff contender. and York had a great off season with the stadium deal looking really good and him doing everything needed by Scott and Sing ,to make the team winners.
Now ,like sing says,it's time to show me,not tell me ! Preseason means NOTHING. 3-1 means nothing and last nights mess means nothing, since they were not playing starters 99% of the time and when Hill was in there he looked sharp as he has looked.
And Davis was playing with 3rd and 4th string O linemen and TE's etc,who kept missing their blocks, many of whom will be home watching the games on tv,like us. He looked just fine last night.

Not to burst your bubble, Boz(o), but initially Matt had Hill being sacked twice during the live game blogging... It's obviously been corrected.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!! Man that was ugly!
