Sanders speaks for Crabtree
The 49ers dispute Deion Sanders' statement that two teams contacted the 49ers in an attempt to trade for receiver Michael Crabtree.
"Those conversations never took place," a 49ers spokesman said Friday night.
Crabtree has not talked publicly since 49ers training camp opened July 28 without him, but his unofficial advisor Sanders spoke for him today on the NFL Network. Sanders' message: Crabtree is serious about sitting out the season, and there are teams out there willing to pay Crabtree twice as much as the 49ers.
"Why would you settle for $20 million when you feel like you can get $40 million," Sanders said. "That's the problem."
The Press Democrat has reported that the 49ers' offer to Crabtree, as the No. 10 pick in the draft, is about $20 million over five years with $16 million in guaranteed money.
The deadline to trade an unsigned draft pick has passed for the league year. Even if Crabtree were to sign with the 49ers, the club would be unable to trade him until March 1. The 49ers would retain his rights up to the 2010 NFL draft.
"Pretty much the San Francisco 49ers need him desperately," Sanders said. "You would think Michael Crabtree would need it (the money) but he's not in dire need of money at this time and I'm saying that honestly."
Might this be a last-gasp negotiating ploy in hopes of turning up the heat on the 49ers? After all, the regular season begins next week. Crabtree would have to sign no later than Saturday, Sept. 12, to avoid missing a game
"Is he willing to sit out the entire year? I think so," Sanders said. "I really think so."

I sure hope Michael Crabtree has a clever attorney. Because I see him suing multiple people for giving bad advice (never mind that he seems to be accepting it so far...).
Like I said, this sounds like a rather pathetic last gasp effort to put pressure on the Niners. Nice try but no cigar for you Parker(actually not even a nice try, lol).
Deion is an old friend and client of Parker. He probably called up his old friend and asked for him to go on tv and whine a little bit about their fantasy that he would sit out the year and that teams are willing to pay him $40 million,LOL.
This is probably good news for the team and probably means Parker is down to his last couple of gasps before he drags his sleezy self over to the phone to tell Crabs he can sign now.The Niners have offered a better than just good deal and I am pretty sure are willing to wheel and deal a little bit,if Parker is reasonable. As jed said,he wants Crabs to come into camp happy,so he is offering a really good and fair deal.Crabs is waiting by the phone and Parker is sweating ,lol.
Wasn't Sanders represented by Eugene Parker at one time or another? This is just a last ditch effort by Parker.
If what Sanders said is true then it's a pretty clear cut case of contract tampering. I'd love to see the league look at it very closely. Either it's true and two teams ought to be punished for doing it or Deion's going to be exposed as a liar and a fool. I see that as a win-win.
If Crabtree doesnt sign, hes an idiot. Noone is going to want to draft him better than 10 next year if he burns the 9ers... He wont possibly get a better deal next year and he loses a year of playing and $$$$$$$$... I think hell be wearing a 9ers tshirt on the sidelines opening day.
I really don't care anymore whether he signs or not. We have 2 first round picks next year. The way I see it is that we can save money by not signing Mr. Crabs. If we can put ourselves in position next year to draft Bradford or Tebow we'll have plenty of money to throw at them as well as free agents. If Mr. Crabs does not sign this deal he will be lucky to make it to the 2nd round next year. Then we'll see how he likes that money!
we don't know what is happening. That's pretty clear. I don't know if Sanders is telling the truth or the Niners are.
Sign him!
Deion is a big-mouthed liar who's made a fool out of Crabtree and will cost him millions with his so-called mentoring. Why would the niners be desperate,so we can be 8-8 instead of 7-9 ? Please.Just man up Deion and admit yor're a narcissistic hump, apologize, and promise to never again resort to such a pitiful act of desperation as negotiating via the media. What a chump.
I agree with Alchemist. It's one thing for Deion to assert two teams contacted the 49ers regarding a trade for Crabby, it's another to indicate they are willing to pay a cerntain amount. The later crosses the line into tampering. The 49ers got into trouble for doing less with Lance "What's a Condom?" Briggs.
Deon spoke ABOUT Crabtree. He mostly certainly did not speak FOR him. I would have thought MM would know the difference.
Crabtree, if you are out there, it is time to speak for yourself because right now, the people speaking for you are confirming what scared off the 9 teams in front of the 49ers from picking you. If you think you will get $40 million from another team in 2010, shoot, I will throw in another $1m. This Deion talk gives me a good chuckle. Remember the last guy he tried to help out, one PacMan Jones...yeah, that didn't work out as planned either now did it??
Anyway, I would rather have a 6-10 team without this stupid diva than a 7-9 team with him. More importantly, I am looking forward to the day we stop talking about crabtree and starting talking about the football players working their tails off that are ON the team.
This whole Crabcrap situation falls on Scot M. we listen to these idiots (team management) talk about character guys and then they draft a fool like this!! Dammit! We could actually have a good prospect at OLB and not that CHUMP Lawson playing or a solid OT prospect. Either way those guys would have been in camp all summer and with the team not sitting on their ass with the public discusison about salary. This is really a refleciton on the piss poor condition of the 49ers.
Let's face it. 9ers made a great but udrerstandable eroor with this pick. Play the season and get what you can for this guy. He is nothing but troulble.
Oh great, you're back!
I don't know if you remember or not but in another discussion thread I asked you to explain your assertion that not signing Crabtree would cost the team multiple wins this season. I'm ready for your justification whenever you're ready to deliver it. Because someone wouldn't just pull a statement like the one you made out of a certain bodily orifice, would they? No, something like that has to have a lot of facts and well thought-out and reasoned ideas supporting it. Yessir, it surely would. Let me hear it.
Deion Sanders...I would not classify him as being a fan or supporter of the 9ers..would you??
Dieon Sanders is the biggest D...K on the planet! Let him take that Crabtree idiot and go to another football team! Does he really think that choosing to sit rather than play for an entire year is going to make you more appealing to other GM's in the league? He will make half as much as he could have made by demonstrating his willingness to put his "desire to play" above "desire for financial gain." Go get your 40 million, idiot! I hope it's with Detroit because I don't WANT to see you in a NINER uniform anymore. And if you're smart, you won'tlet that brilliant mind of our times, neon Deion do your talking for you.
This is pathetically comical. Prime time has past his prime and leading his posse to mythical fool of the sports era.
"You would think Michael Crabtree would need it (the money) but he's not in dire need of money at this time and I'm saying that honestly. Is he willing to sit out the entire year? I think so," Sanders said. "I really think so." Wow. Cutting edge journalism, Sanders. I haven't heard anything that articulate and meaningful since my 2-yaer old granddaughter said, "I go pee pee on the potty!"
Jed, McGM, Paraag, DONT BLINK!
Here's my take: how does Deion know that there has been 2 teams that have contacted the 49ers about Crabtree? Wouldn't that imply that Eugene has fielded calls for Crabtrees services, and has been instructed if Crabtree does holdout there will be at least 2 suitors? Sounds like tampering to me. Crabtree would be the dumbest athlete on earth if he walked away from 20 mill only to get drafted next year in the lower rounds. I don't think crabtree is that stupid. Young, naive, but not stupid. He has to go into this holdout knowing that there is a team that will draft him next year and pay him what he wants. that team is the Dallas Cowboys. It all fits. deion is close to jerry, Deion on NFL net tried to sell us that he "doesn't" talk to Crabtree that often(him and Jerry Jones keepin it on the D.L.), Crabtree "percieves" the 49ers as qbless, it's Crabtrees dream to be a Dallas Cowboy, and Jerry Jones has alot banked on Roy Williams who most feel will not live up to T.O., which means the Cowboys will need a #1 rec in the draft, Crabtree is the best reciever in this years or next years draft admittedly,.....it all fits! the 9ers need to get on this and find out whats really behind this holdout. Crabtree and parker have something to fall back on, and that is illegal. Deion said it himself:he compared playin w the 9ers as playin w the falcons, but playin w the cowboys was a whole other level. This is who Crabs looks up to. it all fits.
Let's see if he can get 10 million next year for sitting out. $40 million for a kid who has not done a darn thing in the NFL. What joke.
I'll help clarify why not signing Crabtree will hurt us. Finding a true #1 reciever is very rare. It wasn't rare if you were a 9er fan in the '80s or '90s, but that just doesn't happen(D.Clark to Rice to Owens). Look at what happened to the Giants when they lost Burress. Look at what happened to us when we gave up T.O. The truth is, we need Crabtree and he needs us. it stung me every time i saw A.Bryant ctch a td last year on my fantasy team. I mean look at the successful young qbs all have a go to guy. Look how Fitz helped Az almost win a SB last year. The thing is, this will either be a win-win for us and him, or a lose lose where pride prevents a 49er Crabtree marriage. i feel there are at least 1 team tampering with our negotiations, and the 49ers have to be smart enough to smoke that team out. The dallas cowboys...er...the team that is tampering should be investigated. I garauntee if Crabtree holds out he will be a dallas Cowboy next year.
That is total BS. If any team was willing to pay Him 40 Mill they had drafted the man or traded up for him. But nobody took the fool and now we know why.
Otoh we really need him on the field, but cannot force the team to overpay him.
Maybe Maybin really was the better choice....
Let's hope these are the final throes before ink meets paper.
Check out my comment here from yesterday. /http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/2009/09/can-crabtree-be-serious-about-walking-away-from-16-million.html#comment-35854
The part I don't understand Montana is how he becomes a Cowboy without trading with us.Could you clarify?
I had respect for deion
If he signs, he has at least half a brain. If he doesn't, he's clueless and let's be glad he's not taking up a roster spot.
That interview was embarrassing. Sanders sounded like a clown who didn't know what he was talking about.
I agree with you, wis one. It's time to move on without Crabtree. Even if he signed the new $20M offer, there's no guarantee that he wouldn't demand to have his contract renegotiated next year, and the year after, and the years after. The 49ers need to take this opportunity to walk away from Crabtree and his clique. The team will be better off without them.
A diva speaks for a diva. Mike Leach still owes Eric Mangini an apology.
I'm a tad puzzled by the claim that the Niners offer to Crabtree is 5 years and $20m made by Deon and the Press Democrat. That's less than signed by picks 11 & 12 and the same as pick 13.
Somebody out there care to shed some light?
I see the point you're making but I'm not sure I agree with a key component of it.
No one disputes we need a #1 WR. Isaac Bruce is well past his prime and a near lock to retire at the end of the season. Further I agree with every point you make about what a difference a talented receiver has the potential to make. My issue is "Is Michael Crabtree that guy?" I honestly don't believe he is.
I'm having flashbacks to 2005. Everyone agreed we needed a quarterback. Rather than draft someone who was perhaps a better player but at a lower-priority position where we still needed help (I wanted Braylon Edwards that year) we chose to select a QB because that position was the priority. If we'd held off a year for a more solid looking prospect we probably could have had Cutler in 06 (who was my guy on draft day that year, too) and we'd be in a lot better shape right now.
My question for Realfan49 directly dealt with Michael Crabtree. If the man were a clone of Jerry Rice then I'd be able to take Realfan's suggestion more seriously. The trouble is Crabtree seems more like Rashaun Woods than Jerry Rice to me. So I'm asking/begging Realfan to tell me what it is I've missed about Michael Crabtree that makes him so sure we've drafted a gamebreaker who now must be appeased.
Gladly!
The $20 million over 5 years is base salary plus guaranteed money (which is $4 and $16 million respectively). The incentives push it to $26.5 million max. The fits in the #10 slot perfectly.
For as much as you like to go on about this you think you'd take the time to get all your facts straight first.
In case you were wondering, BJ Raji got a $22.5 million as a base with $17.7 of is guaranteed on a deal that maxes at $28.5 million. Aaron Maybin got $17.5 million as a base with $14.25 million guaranteed on a deal that maxes at $24.5 million.
Crabtree's rumored deal (which Deion seemed to back up) has $20 million as a base with $16 million guaranteed with a maximum reachable value of $26.5 million. Now I've not been in an arithmetic class for a couple years now but Crabtree's offer seems to be about right to me.
These comments from "Neon" bring one word to mind....tampering. If Crabtree somehow knows of any team making a trade offer and the contract that would ensue then someone is relaying that information through his inner circle, Prime Time, or Eugene Parker himself. Either way that sounds like tampering to me, but at this point it is starting to get ugly between Crabs and the 9ers so let's just wait and see what these teams are willing to spend on this same gimmick WR March 1, 2010. It is infuriating to see this kid get so much bad advice from so many different sources and I wonder if he will look back on these times in 5 years with any regrets for the way he allowed all of this to transpire and more so for the expert advisers he has put in his corner and led him down this ridiculous path. If he continues down this road and does not sign a contract to play for the 49ers this year, I predict he will never see the kind of money he could be stealing from the 49ers ever again. As a loyal fan I hate to see my team lose a top 10 pick this way but I hope this serves as a beacon to the rest of the league the need to change the way rookies are compensated. The raises recieved per pick percentage wise over last year's picks are astronomical compared to previous drafts. Crabtree is slotted to recieve a 10% increase over last year's #10 which is a decent raise but not nearly the ridiculous 40% that the sweatsuit gave to DHB. So Sanders' statement amount to the Raiders were stupid enough to try and validate a pick of no value by overpaying and now SF should hop on that stupid train with them and break the bank for an unproven commodity. Not only does this not make sense as far as setting a precedent for future negotiations with draft picks but also with current veterans who are actually proven and worth giving extensions to, like say Patrick Willis. Joe Staley recently signed an extension with 16 mil guaranteed and if Crabtree gets more than that how can he feel he didn't get hosed. Parker has pushed this to the point now where it is no longer about the money, but more about the principal of not getting pushed around in negotiations. With all of this being said, I do not feel SF should lower or adjust the offer regardless of how many games he misses but, if this kid recieves one cent more than BJ Raji then the front office loses all credibility. The team has come this far without him, and while some the younger WRs might not be as talented or highly-touted as Crabs, they certainly make up for it with a team-first attitude and the hunger to succeed.
Tampering, Tampering, Tampering....have we fallen so far down the NFL chain that the league does not care if we get tampered, but will crucify us for it?
This is NOT News, I've been writing about this on this board for weeks. Here is what is going to happen. Deion "Suicidal" Sanders has an axe to grind STILL against the 49ers and doesn't want his flavor of the month Crabtree to play for the 49ers organization. Crabtree is NOT and I REPEAT NOT GOING TO SIGN WITH THE 49ers. He is going the re-enter next years draft and YES he will be the 1st selection of the DALLAS COWBOYS where ever that pick may end up being and has been promised via 3rd parties a SUBSTANTIAL CONTRACT in the 40 million dollar range. Hence, the reason he can afford to sit out the ENTIRE 2009 season because he is being BANK-ROLLED by friends in high places. That is WHY I said weeks ago before the trade deadline passed that the 49ers SHOULD HAVE contacted DENVER about trading the rights for Brandon Marshall. Being a ME guy is lonely Crabtree, ask your advisor and TO!
That information is via individuals close to Crabtree at Texas Tech, not just BS!
I agree with many of you. Lets assume that our draft pick has decided to retire before he signed a contract and move on.
Even if this punk (I really wanted to call him lot more names, but respecting MM I will just stick with PUNK) signs with 49ers, whats the guarentee that he won't pull this crap every year he catches 10 passes.
This PUNK will not be not the reason we make postseason (or not). Lets just move on.
As a season ticket holder I really want 49ers put their footdown and teach this PUNK and all his advisers a lesson for life and send a message to all lowlife agents like Parker.
Craptree might as well sit out the season. He will be useless to the team this season. Trade his sorry ego after the March trade date and hope we can get a first round pick for him.
Totally agree, if the league doesn't look into who those "two teams" are, we will know that the east coast bias has increased 10 fold with both NFL western conferences being the weakest conf.'s. I wouldn't be surprised that if these two teams do exist one is Jerry (Mr deep pockets)Jones and the Cowboys. Deion's allegiance to Michael Irvin and the Cowboys is a fact. The Cowboys need star receiver desperately. We all know that Goodell wouldn't have the gonads to address that issue. If those teams actually had contact with the Niners, how else would Crabtree's camp have found out other than tampering????? Another leak from the Niners org.? You sure wouldn't want to give the Crabtree's side that kind of leverage.
One thing I would really be disappointed in the Niners is if one of the incentives in the contract was actually that if he catches more passes than Rice in his first two years. Every Niner fan would have to admit that is basically an insulting bogus incentive to reach under the existing offense.
I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.
im getting closer to throwing his jersey in the fire and making smores
CRABTREE doesn't make sense anymore. The whole point of having the foot surgery was to be IN CAMP ON TIME! As for waiting until the 2010 draft: 1) yes he is better than D.H. Bey, but Al Davis is NUTS. So even if they took any other position, Crabtree would STILL have been the #10 pick. 2) his value can ONLY, I repeat ONLY, go down after a year out of football and no workouts for teams. Not to mention the new crop of WRs that won't be so stupid as to waist a year of their careers. and 3) All players know the big money is in the 2nd contract. Sanders said Crabtree might not get that 2nd contract. Well, if a top 10 pick does get a GIANT 2nd contract, then he should have never been a top 10 pick in the first place! HEY CRABTREE, JUST PLAY FOOTBALL, LIKE YOU WANT TO AND STOP LISTENING TO EVERYONE ELSE BUT YOURSELF! If he's not in uniform for week 1, then I hope he never is...
I think we all saw on TV what kind of mentor Sanders is on PrimeU...None of those guys performed well at the combine...how many even made a roster...Atleast he prepared them for LIFE...HAHAHAHAHAHAH...What a Joke
I wonder if Deion has an agreement with Crabtree's agent that will result in him getting a cut!! The only thing Deion is right about is our QB situation. Right now we have 3 backup QBs on this team. If we had a great QB the current receiving corp is more than good. I've never bought the claims about what Crabtree would bring to this team. Like I said before, let him sit out the season. He will not add anything to this team at this point in time.
Anybody else notice the $ graphic breakdown was not matching anything Peon Sanders (def hall of famer..just hating cuz hes on the wrong side of this one!) was saying on the video ?? There is no one who can prove hes gonna get more money a year later...how clueless can this kid be??
I agree with you Niner! Who cares at this point!? We don't have a QB, outside of the rookie and Huard, who they let go, that can get a pass to an outside receiver. Anyway, the 49ers will have to average 250 yards rushing per game to get at least 8 wins.
