From doghouse to team leader
Coach Mike Singletary announced six season-long captains for the 49ers, and they weren't necessarily slam-dunk appointments.
Linebackers Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes, and defensive lineman Justin Smith were named captains, along with special-teamer Michael Robinson. The offensive captains did not include a running back or a quarterback. Instead, Eric Heitmann and . . . wait for it . . . . wait . . . wait . . . Vernon Davis (!) were chosen.
"I'm excited about
Of course, the national perception is that Singletary despises
Questions about that incident inspired Singletary's famed "I want winners!" tirade. Now,
"It was nice to hear,"
As for that rough initial incident,
It wasn't long after that

The 49ers did not work this week during practice with speakers pumping noise onto the practice field. Instead, the team wore ear plugs for portions of practice so that they could not hear anything. Last year, crowd noise was one of the issues the 49ers had difficulty handling in their last-minute meltdown against the Cardinals.
"I want us to be as prepared for any issues that come up," Singletary said.

The receiver position continues to be a work in progress, Singletary said.
"We know that Josh Morgan is on one side and Isaac (Bruce) is on the other," Singletary said. Other than that, he said Arnaz Battle and Micheal Spurlock will be the slot receivers - with both being used depending on the situation.

The 49ers made no changes to their injury report. WR Brandon Jones (shoulder) and LB Ahmad Brooks (knee) are out.
For the Cardinals . . . WR Anquan Boldin (hamstring, WR Early Doucet (ribs) and QB Brian St. Pierre (back) are questionable. WR Steve Breaston (knee), WR Sean Morey (ribs) and S Matt Ware (shoulder) are probable.

I want Boldin to play so when we win there are not any excuses!!!
I'm excited for this season I hope our 49ers will win to ease the depression i got from having chicken pox for 3 weeks. I can only look forward to the games to ease my misery. I always include my niners in my prayers together with my recovery to heal and win every game whether its at home or away. Godspeed!
Matt... I have a question regarding the drafting of Crabtree that you might be able to shed some light on. If he doesn't sign (I'm still hoping he will obviously) should/will Scott McCloughan be held accountable for picking him over say Brian Orakpo who would've been very happy with #10 money? Whether it's not wanting to be a Niner or not willing to accept the NFL's slotting system for draftpicks, is this something that McC knew or should've been aware of before he picked Crabtree? If Crabtree doesn't sign that makes McC 0-3 in top ten picks (Smith bust, VD alright but not worthy of #6 overall).
It is obvious that Sing loves VD and that VD has come a long way under Sing's watchfull eye. But it is also true that Sing puts added pressure on VD to be an example to his team mates and to act right at all times,by making him a Captain.
Smart move by sing !
And we all know that S. Hill IS the leader of the offense,so no need to name him a Captain,he is already THE Captain.Knowing that his team mates already look up to Hill as THE leader made it easier for Sing to use one of his 6 Captian badges on Heitmann, who has been the leader of the line for a couple of years now. Sing knows that as the O line goes,so the offense and the QB go and recognizing one of their own as Captain lets them know how important they all are.
And roasthog: Scotty would have bee held accountable if he did not pick Crabs when he fell to #10. As a matter of fact there are many fans who would have wanted to tar and feather him and run him out of town on a rail,if he passed on Crabs. This is scotty 1st year as GM. Nolan was head of player personel until last year and even then Nolan was still saying he was head of player personel. Scotty was the only one who wanted willis, and has now only had 1 draft without Nolan. He is loved by Jed and by sing,so he is in no danger at all(yet).
I like the picks for Captains. I am a little surprised that Hill wasn't named one though. He has shown his leadership skills many times. Headed to the Giants/Dodgers game tonight, but can't wait for Sunday.
On a side note...Trying to forget about Crabtree. I hope the niners pursue the possible tampering charges. The only way I can forgive him is if he becomes a niner and contributes this season.
Yo no soy marinero.. yo no soy marinero, soy capitan, soy capitan, soy capitan!
The hell with Craptree. Pride goes before a fall. I hope he does not sign, and the Niners trade his rights to Cincinnatti next March 1.
If you make Vernon a captain then he also has to act like one. This is not a given, but it does seem that Vernon wants to please the coach, and telling someone they are a leader and they beleive you the subconscious takes you where you think you belong. I think it will work out.
Everyone is calling the niners an 8-8 team at best. This weekend will certainly help figure that out, but I still maintain that Hill will be much better at the end of the season (he's only started what, 7/8 games?). So if they start off the first half 4-4 expect a better finish.
Hey Matt,
You said earlier in the summer that the best case scenario for Alex Smith was to NOT win the QB competition because it would be better for him to come in to the season with none of the pressure a starter faces and fans tend to root for the backup QB. But with Nate Davis's play in the preseason, if Hill fails to impress...will the fans ask for Smith or Davis?
Nate Davis, Vernon Davis and Scot McCloughan:
First off, Nate Davis should be the starting qb. The Niners should "Joe Flacco," Nate Davis - meaning they should bring him along slowly while starting him. The should not be gun-shy about the failed Alex Smith project. However, another Nate, Nate Clements, holds up Nate Davis' rookie year start. Clements holds up Davis because if the Niners can't stop the pass, the Niners need an immediate passing threat, and Shaun Hill is that answer even though Nate Davis is fair superior in the qb skills catagory.
Vernon Davis can take all the extra practice he wants, be close the coaching staff, and trying to establish himself as a leader, but it's all for not. Natural leaders are play-makers, with smarts and hands and body control - something Vernon Davis is seriously lacking. He's a blocking TE, and a great one, but nothing more.
Scot McCloughan and Mike Singletary are a bad fit together. McCloughan loves skill position players, while Singletary is a build the trenches, and win with power kind of guy. Even though they both want to see eye to eye, they never will. Crabtree over Oher, Vernon Davis of Hali Ngata..... 'nough said.
Ian,
That's a very good point. I know you asked Matt but I wanted to weigh in my opinion as well (hope you don't mind). Any case, I believe there will still be a split between the fans. Some will want Alex and some will want Davis and some won't care. I still believe Alex Smith will get that opportunity to show what he has but with the fans he will always be on a very short leash. If he throws an inception or holds on too long, then you'll definitely hear the boos and a call for Davis.
Really Splitblood? Really? Are you paying attention here? What about Joe Staley over Limas Sweed/Anthony Gonzales or Chilo Rachael over DeSean jackson? Or Kentwan Balmer over every single receiver picked in the 2008 draft? Or Manny Lawsome over Santonio Holmes. Common dude. McC drafts have been much more Smash and very little dash. McC has used more high picks on the trenches than any other spot on the team since 2005. Matt Barrow's jokes that he prefers the Ford 150's draft classes over the Ferraris.
Since 2005, McC has taken 5 lineman (Bass, Chilo, Manny, Staley, and Balmer) in the top two rounds. That compares to 1 TE, 1 WR, and 1 QB. That doesn't sound like someone trying to draft skill over the trenches to me. In fact, I think we need more speed and skill out of our draft picks.
"nuff said?" Yeah, you should've stopped at your first colon.
If we started N.Davis now, would he be "Flacco'd," or "A.Smith'd?" I.e., Flacco had pretty good team around him and stellar defense.
Natural leaders are playmakers. Hmmm, ok, so by your logic E.Heitmann shouldn't be a captain. Aight...
How in the world do you know McC and Sing are a bad fit and there hasn't been one regular season game played yet?
In summary: Child please...
Ha ha ha - Kiss the Baby!!!!
Wouldn't it be smart to give Jason Hill a bunch of playing time? didn't he play well against the Cards last time around?
Matt,
I recall last year the 49ers had repeated difficulty with their headsets. Do we know if they ever figured out what the problem was and/or if they resolved it?
And we all know that S. Hill IS the leader of the offense,so no need to name him a Captain,he is already THE Captain
lol. You wish. It's obvious that none of these Captains are candidates for benching. Unlike Hill. Which makes sense, it'd be pretty embarrassing to bench one of your hand-picked Captains...
...even though Nate Davis is fair superior in the qb skills catagory....
Perhaps more accurate to say he has better physical tools, because he certainly has a bigger arm. But better skills? No.
When a QB is drafted everyone talks about arm stregnth, physical tools etc. But when a young QB is struggling (as they all do), what do they talk about? 'speed of the game', understanding the defense, reading formations, timing, accuracy, field presence, awareness.....The reason Hill won games last year are all these things, and it's why he's QB now.
Why are people always enamored with a strong arm?
Nate Davis is more accurate, more mobile, throws a more "catchable," ball, has better vision, and he's younger ='ing an investment in the future. Nate Davis should be the starter over any Niner qb the Niners have had on the roster since Jeff Garcia, and even then I believe Nate Davis could have more of an upside than Garcia. Nate Davis is the answer at qb, but Nate Clements, a lack of Niner coaching and offensive vision and structure is the reason Davis sits. If the Niners had an awesome secondary, and an offensive coaching staff with a clue, Davis would be the answer immediately. He's that good. Don't forget the success Flacco and Ryan had as rookies last year. Forget that Davis is a fifth rounder, a Ball State guy - forget that Alex Smith was a huge bust as a first overall starting immediately. Each case is different, and Nate Davis (book smart handicap and all), is the immediate Niner answer as long as the secondary isn't responsible for giving up 30+ a game. NATE DAVIS!!!!!!!! is the answer!
Nice job on KNBR MM. I respect Ralph a great deal, but he can be a donkey derriere sometimes, esp. when he harps on the "Paragg in the booth" thing.
I don't think you could blame Mc for the crabtree pick. i like that he was smart enough to pick him. All you could do in the draft is put in your work scouting during the season, then the board should speak for itself. No one forsaw this comming, except maybe the Browns.
this could've happened to the best of G.M.'s. besides, Mc has been really good in the later rounds of draft recently, and his pick of Josh Morgan may make up for the Crabtree loss. Also, if we could turn crabtree into another 1st round pick we could garauntee a great draft class in 2010 which may include one of the big 3 franchise qb's(Mccoy, Bradford, and Tebow bein the lesser of the 3 but maybe the most intruiging).
Who would've thought Crabtree would be this short sighted? I mean, if you get picked high your not goin to be in the best situation as draft picks are slotted from worst to first. What you give up in money the farther you drop you gain in gettin with a more stable organization. The 49ers are a team on the rise and if Crabtree is to dumb to see that then let him be a Cowboy because i know that's what this is all about. I'm quietly hopin RWilliams has a good season.
Matt, not that it matters all that much, but shouldn't a team captain have accomplished something positive on the field before he is named a captain? Outside of unsportsmanlike penalties, dropped passes, being a draft bust, and leading the team in "posing", I just don't see where Vernon Davis has really deserved the title. Oh well, I'm sure he will show us all this season...
Just because Nate Davis can do well against the 3rd string defense does not make him better. If Shaun Hill does not win games this year than everyone can jump on the hate bandwagon, give the guy a chance.
I would have picked Crabtree too.
"We had no idea he would be there at 10," coach Mike Singletary said. "It was one of the last scenarios we thought we would end up with. He's been one of the best guys, the past couple of years in college football."
Singletary said. "You've got a playmaker. He's going to have to earn his way on, but the most important thing is that we know we have a playmaker."
Perhaps they were unprepared and never thought about the problems of signing him at "10" slot money? Let's stopped this foolishness of degrading his ability. He was one the most dynamic college football players last year.
I am bummed we haven't signed him for whatever reason or whomever is at fault on either side. He was a super college receiver and more than likely would become an all pro playmaker in a couple of years.
Hope he signs!
Marcos,
I'm with you that I hope Crabtree signs because I don't want anymore wasted opportunities for the Niners. But Crabtree was a terrible pick.... it was horrible. So bad, in fact, that it got me kicked off the Chron site for childish bursts of frustrated profanity.
Crabtree was a bad pick on so many levels - First off, Eric Mangini pretty well outlined one character concern pre-draft about Crabtree's posse. That's the same posse many are referencing when saying, "He's getting bad advice." Mangini had a point that Singletary and McCloughan turned a deaf ear to. Secondly, all the "playmaker" quotes you just cited are all spin from Niner camp trying to justify the terrible pick. Singletary doesn't know if Crabtree is a play maker at the next level. Nobody knows. He's using borrowed "projection" currency to pay down the price on McCloughan's head for yet another terrible first round disaster, and Singletary can only sell and spin so many times. More to follow.
I'm no apologist for the brass ,like a few here, but I would have blown my top if Scott had passed on Crabtree at #10.
In addition to the Singletary spin, and the Magini / Posse issue, Crabtree was a terrible pick for two other reasons: The direction the team is headed, and the amount of established talent already at the wr position compared to obvious talent voids in glaring areas of offensive weakness.
If Jimmy Raye and Mike Nolan both stated they want(ed) to run the ball 60% of the time, what is a more valuable corp group of offensive players? Is it the O-line, or is it the WR corp? If you don't have a dependable starting RT, and your dependable starting LT isn't that great as a run blocker, you have a tackle need that must be addressed before you will successfully run the ball at all, let alone 60% of the time. And if it wasn't blatantly obvious that Oher was the pick at 10 after Marvel Smith retired, Snyder got hurt, Simms started and Crabtree had Trent Dilfer throwing to him on the NFL network to increase trade value, I don't know if the poor choice will ever be recognized by knowledgable Niner fans (Crabtree, Balmer, Vernon, Alex Smith, Manny Lawson). Scot McCloughan absolutely sucks as a GM. To make matters worse, the Niners already had enough talent to support the WR position - Jones, Battle, Morgan and Bruce would have done just fine the "oher" 40% of the time.
In addition to what was written above, McCloughan also blew the 10th overall because qb is a glaring weakness on the team. If I was the GM, I would have gone after Cutler, selling him that he'd sit his first year in the owner's luxury box while I built up the lines to protect him. I wouldn't have brought Cutler into play behind this current line. The first overall should have been Micheal Oher to play the LT position, and the Niners should have moved the very good Joe Staley to right tackle. This is not my own idea. I'm stealing it from Football Outsiders Almanac that used to be called Pro Football Prospectus. The current bible of NFL stats and theories declares Joe Staley "better suited for the right side." not me.
In addition to the above rant, here's another: Niner fans are the most under-educated fans in the U.S. They are susceptible to spin, sales pitches, pure bs from the media and Niner headquarters. Football "Outsiders," is all about objective reporting from guys in the know who are not apart of the media spin, trying to support the team and sell tickets. Every Niner fans should read what Bill Barnwell wrote about the current state of this team in Football Outsiders Almanac. It's pathetic, and the Yorks and McCloughan are to blame. 7-9 would be lucky.... yet again. GO RAIDERS!!!!
I have been as tough on McCloughan as anybody here, but I have to say it is unfair to second guess the Crabtree pick. I felt at that time we needed a play-maker we have been missing since TO left town. Crabtree was the ideal pick. I agree 100% with truthpeddler. I too would have blown my top if we had passed on Crabtree.
Remember, only the team with the #1pick (Detroit) was able to negotiate with their potential picks. Scott M had no way of knowing beforehand that Crabtree had a problem playing for the Niners.
By the way, I am convinced that the nonsense about the slotting and wanting to get paid as the best player is just a smokescreen. Crabtree just does not want to play for us. I think he wants to play for the Cowpokes.
.....bzzzz......can someone plz step on the roach spittin blood....
Would you take another inside linebacker to compliment Spikes, Willis and McKillop with the tenth overall? How 'bout another running back with Gore, Coffee, Robinson and Norris (and they should have kept Sheets)? Hell no. You draft for need, not best player available. Crabtree was a terrible, indefensible pick.
Mangini's a football guru?? Yikes.
Spit, you've become such a ridiculous fellow I can't even get myself worked up to slap you around anymore. LMAO.
Be happy guys,we are undefeated !!! We have two #1 picks next year and we have a great young owner who will do whatever it takes to win.We have a possibly great and loved HC and a really good GM,(according to Ron Wolfe and Mike holmgren and Bill Parcells, but who are they compared to some fans who think they know better?).
Be happy!
Man I hate to think what some of these sour pusses will be ranting and raving their hatred about if we actually lose a game !
Vernon as a team captain is an anomaly when viewed as an outsider. Besides his workout skills does he display the kind of dispassionate, lucid, clearheadedness one needs from a leader-with his propensity for fights with others on the squad and the still to be realized potential on the field ones first reaction might be a scratch on the old noggin! Hopefully ,this is a crafty move by Coach Singletary ,as intimated earlier,in lifting the bar maybe Mr Davis is brought to a more elevated viewpoint and his actions will so reflect .
It's great that Matt wrote another article for us! Man the Press Democrat better have provided Matt with Healthcare because he's always on the go!
TOP_CAT: I agree with everything you have written about you know who? Don't waste your comments on him! Just keep movin' right on past! There is something called "INVINCIBLE IGNORANCE!" The definition states it is a person who simply refuses to believe the argument ignoring any evidence including reason, rational or philosophical. The guy reeks of it!
Well it's College ball all day tomorrow, and then the big game on Sunday!
I vow to boycott any mention of Crabtree' name until he scores his first touchdown as a Niner. If he decides not to sign with our team, oh well; i really don't think i'll lose any sleep over it.
I really enjoy MM's up-to-the-minute posts, but everytime I get suckered into reading the general public's posts. I used to enjoy reading the well-thought-out and intelligent comments. However, it seems that many of the more rational posters have disappeared. I find myself skipping posts from oneniner, spitblood, etc. and I haven't the patience to read top cat's verbose essays. The Crabtree issue is no longer interesting and our QB play is what it is, no matter how much we argue about it. Must be time to start the games so we can really get going with the 2nd guessing and Monday morning quarterbacking.
oldgiantsfan: Amen! seems like some bloggers have crowned themselves 'the keepers of (the blogging) gate' and that we need their approval to proceed.
Another Amen! to oldgiantsfan.
Hey leakblood your an absolute idiot! Nothing you say makes real sense. should of, could of, would of. Shut up! If Nate Davis was ready to start he'd be starting period! Crabtree is an idiot but an excelent pick. And you're a gay looking raider fan that logged on to the wrong web site! Never say go raiders and expect a savage like me to keep quiet! You should get banned for that alone. Niner fans I hope you guys feel me on this one.
Well said buddy I shouldn't let myself get so worked up over a few ignorant comments....
Next year will be Nate Davis' opportunity to win the starting job and I have confidence that he will indeed succeed.
I like the earplug idea. Very clever. Has it been used before by anyone else?
9er Bouie,
You're a classic Niner fan...... "If Nate Davis was ready to start, he'd be starting....." Um, uh, um..... you mean like Alex Smith? He was ready, right? So what you're saying is that if the Niners make a decision, it's always the right one? Like drafting Crabtree, Balmer, Smith, Vernon, Manny, cutting Sheets, keeping Nate Davis third behind a qb who really should be out of football entirely but the GM was /is too emotionally attached to pull the plug, costing the Niners cap money and a roster spot they could be grooming someone else with. Any of this making any sense to you? Jim Hostler, Mike Martz, Ashlie Lelie, Darrel Jackson, TCBY, Brandon Williams, Jimmy Raye, Marvel Smith, Weinke, Sammy Davis, Oliver, Fields, Jay Moore, Singletary dropping his shorts and going on tirades in the press room, Kurt Warner .... overpaying Nate Clements. The list just goes on and on showing poor judgement by every member of the Niners, and yet, "If Nate Davis was ready (a call made by the same people responsible for the mistakes above), he'd be starting. Awesome focus and logic on your behalf. You're a typical Niner fan, and dismissed.
The 49ers have the same pass rushing talent that they had last year.
They have basically the same TEAM as last year. Yet, many of you think McCloughan is a keeper, Singletary is a great coach, and the 49ers are "a team on the rise".
All 49er fans WANT them to win. Some of us just fail to see how that can happen based on reality.
Objectively speaking there's a better possibility they'll get dominated Sunday, than they'll win with the points.
And for all this negativity out there..WHEN the 9ers put it on the Cards, I don't want to see you POS on here celebrating like you knew it all along. It is the same personnel as last year but a totally different direction. Here is one thing I bet...you were just a happy as McC when Crabtrre fell to us at 10..well just like you he didn't know that signability would be this difficult with the 10th overall pick..nobody did..the players we have had on this team have gotten better..that is what happens with experience..how many rooks made the Pro Bowl last year..now when they are 3rd year players check again and I bet that # gets bigger..We will win the West this year in spite of Crabtree and remember this is McC's 2nd year behind the wheel..not his fault we traded to get Staley and lost our Jerrod Mayo pick to the Pats
WHEN the Niners lose 34-6, I don't want to see YOU posting on here that it'll be, "better next week."
In McCloughan's tenure as director of personnel and GM, the Niner record is 23-41. You can blame it on the Yorks, the coaches, the stadium, the salary cap, but I blame it on the failed draft picks..... year in and year out. McCloughan has no clue! The Niners will be lucky to win 6 games this year. They will win games when they don't matter against teams who have given up. Singletary won't let them quit, and we'll all be talking about moral victories around week 12. Sign me up. Can't wait to buy season tickets!
To all the naysayers out there-same team? yea but with an attitude of die on your feet or live on your knees instead of timidly reacting with extreme caution. The Cardinals are ripe for a good ole fashioned ass whupping and the 49ers are gonna pick them to eat alive come sunday. Watch and see, I will be cuz I got an NFL ticket. What you got? Nothing but real deep seeded doubt.
Razoreater I got 1 too, The DTV NFL Sunday Ticket variety. It's how us East Coast Faithful ROLL.
I'm with you, Sing had this game on the Dart Board since the schedule was posted. They will be prepared, we need them to execute and take no prisoners.
Look for a few new Defensive wrinkles and Vernon in the flat. I'd love to see our 9ers lay a whuppin' on them, but gimme a win, no matter how ugly.
Amen.
2 Guys in Contract walk years at the moment, Shawne Merriman, Vince Wilfork.
Put them at the Top of the Watch List and consider 2 1 st Rd picks in April.
With or without Crabtree and any additional picks that may result, we aren't looking too shabby for the immediate future.
I'd take inquiries for Trades involving Baas/Battle and inquire about Nate Clements to Denver to rejoin NoPlan.
Nates' Contract will be hard, if not impossible, to move however.
as hot as shawn merriman could make this team from past performance, those knee surgeries scare the heck out of me.
Shield_Battery that's why we Watch for now, see how it holds up and whether Larry English allows him to hit the market.
There's already a connection with Manusky as we know, so it's just a wait and see thing for now.
Dallas and Wade already having Igor would certainly be in play too if they can't keep Ware.
Regarding Vernon Davis, I don't care how good a blocker he is, if he can't be a reliable receiver, especially when we're in the red zone or when the game is on the line (which he has never been), he is a failure and a huge waste of a #6 overall draft pick.
I think making him a "captain" is part of Sing's effort to get Davis to use his brain. With Davis, my opinion is, I won't believe he is going to be any good until I see it consistently on the field. I hope I do, but we've been hearing "this is the year" forever.
Forever sure is a short time these days, since this is VD's 4th year. I don't think we heard it in his 1st year and Martz didn't use him as a receiver, so I guess forever refers to his 2nd year - the one where he caught 52 passes in Hostler's offense and was our second leading receiver.
The stars seem to be lined up for Vernon-the coaching staff and a big vote of confidence from Coach et. al. we will need him this year.Although I was surprised as I'm sure many were he was designated a captain(perhaps I shouldn't have been as Coach has been touting him regularly this year!)-I'm truly hopeful he shows himself to be not only a captain but a leader. Count me in on the we "whomp some Cardinal tail this Sunday" train!
VD has failed to live up to the #6 overall. No doubt he has great physical ability, but when will it be shown on the field making plays with any consistency? He celebrates on ordinary plays.
IMHO He is not even in the top 10 of NFL tight ends. Delanie Walker is a much better receiver and runner after the catch. Hopefully he will step up this year and live up to those great physical abilities.
Does anybody else think its weird that our starting QB is not a captain? Sing said Hill exmplified leadership, why no captaincy? I smell lack of faith!
VD has not disappointed IMO. He'll be in your "top 10" after this year. After this year he will finally be given the opportunity to show he's not just the best blocking TE in the NFL. After this year he will be fed wilson and he will eat LB's for brunch running for the TD's he has been sooo hungry for.
With a new offensive coordinator and new playbook every year, an O-line that's been changed around every year, a receiving corp that's still in flux after 4+ years and a new QB every year, that just might be the reason NO YOUNG PLAYER on the offensive side of the ball has had a real chance to develop INCLUDING Smith. LACK OF STABILITY on offense for how many years now?
I used to think the Raiders had the market cornered on clueless fans but after reading some of these posts, I have to admit we Niner fans have our share too!
matt, niners defense will face a lot of 3 receivers set this week and i'd like to know what the front "6" will look like? I'm pretty sure we will find Haralson, Smith at de and dt. PW at on mlb spot. I'm not too sure of the three others. we should have lawson on the field but will he be at de or covering lb? anyway who do you think are the last two player probably on the field in nickel package? thank you if you have the time to answer
Crabtree just does not want to play for us. I think he wants to play for the Cowpokes.
This may in fact be true. But if it is, he is turning down 16 mil guaranteed to get millions less, a year later. What a dupe. He may get more than 20 mil...some day...if he makes it through his first 4 or 5 year contract...and if he proves he is an uber NFL stud. Those are some big ifs, and even if they play out true, he still would end up with more if he signed what is on the table now.
I guess in some ways, if the money is not that important to him, I should cut him some slack. If I was a stud receiver in college, and (being a 49er fan) I was drafted by...ick... Jerry Jones/Cowboys (I think I just threw up in my mouth a little), it would be pretty awful putting on their uniforms, lol.
But, if Patrick Willis can do it...
We should start a pool, the "how much will Crabtree lose by holding out pool". Put me down for 7 million, guaranteed.
Matt, Read your blog on a daily (twitter hourly) basis..Question: What kind of pick could we expect for Crabtree should we trade his rights after the season?
Being in the right scheme no doubt improves your statistics and while I will acknowledge all the real problems of different OCs your play making ability will show through even in poor teams. His hasn't.
Show me something first then I will pass out the praise.
You Wrote: This may in fact be true. But if it is, he is turning down 16 mil guaranteed to get millions less, a year later. What a dupe.
I cannot understand this either. However, indulging in some conspiracy theory, suppose Jerry Jones, through an intermediary got word to Crabtree that if he held out the whole year, the ‘pokes will give him big $$$$ in 2010. Maybe That’s where Sanders got his “scoop”.
We know Jones has always hated the 49ers. Even after all these years he still tries to rub it in any chance he gets by reminding everybody how he snookered the Niners in the Haley trade. I would not put anything past that face lifted jerk.
Skeebers, actually at the beginning of last year it seemed like forever and now it seems like forever and ever. Check Sing's recent comments and you see the QBs don't trust Davis to be where he is supposed to be, much less make the catch. I would love to see all that change, but lets not go into denial about it.
I can't wait for tomorrow!!!!!I am hoping and expecting a win, but I am realistic, a loose my be the outcome. Now PLEASE everyone, a win tomorrow does not mean everything is great and neither a defeat foreshadows a horrible season. It is an away game vs a Super Bowl team.

Niners start the season 0-4, fans are screaming for someone's head. Singletary just got here so he isn't the problem. The finger points at Scot McCloughan. The Niners lose to the Cards 32-6, and can't even score a single TD. Their offense is so bad, the team can't pickup a late, garbage-time TD when the Cards easily have the game in hand. By week 5 the Niner hate is so strong that the Niner spin machine is in full force, saying things like, "Scot McCloughan is one of the most respected personnel guys in the league." Yeah, respected by teams that trade with him as a "great option to trade with because he knows little about value and talent." Go Raiders!.... until McCloughan is gone.
And what comments by Sing are you referring to?
yaaawwwnnnn...
Question: Matt, Read your blog on a daily (twitter hourly) basis..Question: What kind of pick could we expect for Crabtree should we trade his rights after the season?
My response: I have no idea, but if there really are two teams out there that value Crabtree enough to give him $40M (as Deion Sanders said), they they could get multiple picks, including a first-rounder. But where were those teams on draft day when Crabtree was sliding down the board? --Matt M.
Getting to know the offensive playbook where everybody's on the same page is what makes an offense good. It doesn't happen when it changes every year. O-lines don't get good until they've had a chance to play together at the same positions for a couple years, not the merry-go-round of player moves under the totally clueless Nolan. Now when you have to stay in to block most of the time like they've used Davis over his short career, how would any intelligent football fan expect him to have developed into a good receiver? The Niner offense has been in total chaos since Donahue purged all the decent players for salary cap reasons. To expect younger players like Davis and Smith to come into a totally messed up offense in a yearly state of constant chaos and become stars is so completely unrealistic. It sounds more like the whining that comes from Ralph Barbieri where he'd like to blame Paraag for all the teams shortcomings. Let's get real on player expectations and you're certainly not the only one who needs to.
sf49ers - I'm sure you can see there isn't really a contradiction there with the Prospectus / media argument because anyone can have a camera thrown in their face. I think the talented Mr Roto is a complete idiot. I like the "Outsiders," label. I don't want a single 9er cronnie reporting on what happened. That's how you get ten years of "HOPE," sold.
umm umm, like umm, yeah um like umm umm ts umm umm
Hey Matt, Fox Sports Jay Glazer juest reported on Fox NFL Sunday the Niners sent MC a letter this week that they will be decreasing their offer. Any truth to this?
Also, can we get an ignore button on here?
Alright spitblood..time to shut your mouth...enough of you and your logic..you know nothing and speak nonsense
Looks like the ones in denial are the ones who have not been watching while VD turned into a pro bowl player in front of their eyes. (he was an alternate last year and Martz refused to actually use him much as a receiver, and he still made alternate !!!).
