Running back Frank Gore nursed a right ankle injury last week, taking part in limited practice. On the first play on which he touched the ball, Gore came up hobbling.
But 49ers coach Mike Singletary says the injury sustained early in the game Sunday against the Vikings is not related to Gore's pre-existing condition. We're trying to get official word from the 49ers' medical staff.
Gore sustained an ankle sprain against the Seahawks. (A sprain is an injury to a ligament). The injury Gore sustained Sunday was described as an ankle strain. (A strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon).
It should be noted that the only other recent "ankle strain" by a 49ers player was Patrick Willis' injury, which he sustained Aug. 3 during a "nutcracker drill." He missed two weeks of training camp with an injury that was later revealed to be a strain of the Achilles tendon.
* * *
UPDATE: The 49ers say Willis misspoke when he said it was an Achilles strain. It was a peroneal strain, which is a tendon near the Achilles. An Achilles strain would be a much more serious injury.
Gore is scheduled to have an MRI examination later today.
"It is not believed to be serious," Singletary said.
* * *
Left tackle Joe Staley (right knee contusion) will be getting an MRI today, too. Staley said the injury was sustained on a leg whip.
The remainder of the injury report is: linebacker Takeo Spikes (left leg contusion); safety Reggie Smith (right groin pull); linebacker Jeff Ulbrich (right quadriceps contusion); cornerback Dre' Bly (right toe contusion); guard David Baas (left ankle sprain); tackle Adam Snyder (left thumb sprain).
* * *
When Singletary was asked about Jimmy Raye's play-calling in the fourth quarter, he did not second-guess the calls but vowed to learn from what occurred.
"The bottom line he called the things that he called yesterday because they made sense," Singletary said. "Obviously, every decision when it doesn't work, all of a sudden it doesn't make sense. Why would you do that? I know that's your job. Just understand that you call plays because you believe they'll work.
"We did it and it did not work. We got to go back to the board and do something else."
* * *
Singletary clearly was not pleased with the officiating, most notably the taunting penalty on Shawntae Spencer that kept a Vikings drive alive in the second quarter. The 49ers appeared to stop the Vikings on a third-and-10 from the
When asked if Singletary supported Spencer, he answered, "Absolutely."
* * *
Singletary said the 49ers were not in a prevent defense for the final play. Generally, a prevent defense consists of a three-man pass rush and eight defenders in coverage. The 49ers rushed the standard four men on Favre's game-winning toss to Greg Lewis.
Singletary said he did not fault safety Mark Roman, who was the closest man to Lewis in the 49ers' four-across zone coverage. But, Singletary said, "If he was in good position, he would've made the play. So, no, he was not in great position. But the thing is, they just made a football play. There are some times the quarterback throws the ball and the guy's in position to make a play. That's what happened."
* * *
And, finally, Singletary said the 49ers are simply not good enough to take any team lightly -- even the lowly St. Louis Rams, who come to town with a 0-3 record.
"One of the big things we're always talking about is respect," Singletary said. "We're not good enough to look at St. Louis or any other team and say, 'Wow, we're going to have a tough time getting ready for those guys.' We have a destination we're trying to get to. It's about us. It's not about them. We have to stay focused on the goal at hand. And if we don't stay focused, then we're not who we say we are."

Hey Matt,
Any idea when we will have an answer on the MRI? Also if it does turn out to be serious who do you think will become a casualty for Sheets bring brought up? Do you foresee any changes on the conservative playcalling?
OK I went to the game yesterday and here are the INC Hill threw Yesterday.
1st QTR
Pass to Issac Bruce INC - Coverage INC
Hill Hits as he throws for INC - Hit while Throwing
Coffee bobbles ball for INC -Dropped Pass
2nd Qtr
1. Inc to Bruce - Pass Defended
2. Pressure so INT because D Walker fell down on play and didnt even try to get up and get after the ball.
- I call this a Receiver error I am sure others and a monkey that dislikes him blame Hill (Singletary chews out Walker on sideline.
3. Ball thrown out of bounds due to coverage and pressure coming. - Throw away
3rd QTR
Intentional Grounding - Smart play trying to get rid of ball to not take sack. Unfortunately no receiver there.
4th QTR
Hail mary INC - bad throw? I dont think so... It was a needed throw....
In the Vikings game hill had ZERO bad throws.
Good play from Hill in that game when he was given the chances.
Monkey's stats are poop I am sure....
FYI - I dont care about A.Smith....he his not playing, so i can care less about him..
Some on this blog can't face the true facts so they keep bringing up my so called "love for A.Smith"....just to muddy the truth
I dont give a damn about A.Smith.....
All I know is my current QB sucks...thats all i care about.
who gives a f..k about A.Smith - last i recalled he didnt send me any $$$
So again all i care about is dumping this crap-shooter,....i wont mind if they could bring back huard....
I am writing a letter to McGM asap..
...this touture has to stop
lex Smith vs. Shaun Hill
Smith:
63.5 QB rating career
5.8 Yards per attempt
54.4 completion %
19 TD / 31 INT / 4 Fumbles Lost
Career Record 11-20
Hill:
90.4 QB Rating career
6.9 Yards per attempt
63.9 completion %
21 TD / 10 INT / 2 Fumbles Lost
Career Record 9-4
You asked for facts so there it is in numbers.
Numbers don't lie Oneniner... your an idiot and Smith sucks
That is why everyone on this blog doesn't agree with you.
IF I DIDN"T PUT NAMES ON TOP OF THE STATS AND ASKED YOU TO PICK QB A OR QB B WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE ONENINER????????
...Its an INSULT to have the defense play as it has and not WIN...
we are a top 5 defense with a QB nobody wants on there team...
I cant blame the defense for this loss...
i blame this --- 0 FOR 8 passing ON 3RD DOWNS
if we had just completed one maybe the Great Devil Favre wont have time for a comeback....
just freaking one...just one third down
If Raye called plays to get a first down Hill will execute plain and simple
Matt,
The Refs didn't lose the game for the 9ers but it was definitely poorly officiated. There were 2 or 3 very easy offsides calls that should have been called against the Vikes but weren't. I understand the taunting call against Spencer but it seemed some of Jared Allen's little reactions could have been called taunting as well. I thought the Justin Smith low tackle on Favre was a terrible call as it appeared the o-lineman was pulling Smith down as he was going to hit Favre. AP's 35 yard run was aided by an obvious hold that should have called on the outside.
Did Sing say he was going to ask the league about any of these plays?
..dude get over it...A.Smith is not playing
...nobody is talking about A.Smith
stop obsessing about him......this has nothing to do with A.Smith
i dont care about A.Smith....get it
I care about my QB play -- and it made me puke yesterday
0 for 8 on 3rd downs......yea that is what is pissing me off
if we had made just one ...just freaking one....
there wont be time for a comeback....
... by the way the inuslt is you disgracing the great steve young with your profile pic
8 plays.....dude
8 chances.....dude.....what can raye do?
they practiced all this plays already.....training camp - weekdays
8 freaking plays.,..
If the recievers are running 5 yard routes on 3rd and 10 what usually happens???
excuses, excuses, excuses.....
dude 8 times....8 chances...8 plays
just make one - and take 2mins of the clock......just one....and we WIN the game
No one on this blog takes you seriously. Find a hobby.
The fact of the matter is
Alex Smith is the only option at QB and you are calling for Hill to be benched... so even though you say you don't care about Smith, you are saying you want him to start....
What is your suggestion start Hill or start Smith???
Very simple, we don't have the superstar QB on the roster so would you rather have a guy with a stronger arm in there losing games for us or a guy with a weaker arm that isn't losing the game?
You keep focusing on the 8 plays...
What about the 16 first and second downs before those 8 plays that put them in a hole?
You can say its not about Alex Smith, its about the QB play BUT the truth of the matter is regardless of what you think about Hill, he has shown that he is the best option the 49ers have at QB. It does not matter if they failed to convert a 3rd down, Hill has proven he is their best QB. Despite the problems on 3rd down yesterday, he had them in position to win the game, on the road, against a team considered a SB contender, despite not having the team's best offensive player for all but 4 plays. But, none of that matters. All that matters is that good, bad or ugly, Hill has shown he is the 49ers best QB. You don't have to like it but it is what it is and is not likely to change for the balance of the season absent an injury.
You keep focusing on the 8 plays...
What about the 16 first and second downs before those 8 plays that put them in a hole?
Of those 8 plays, 6 were 3 and 8 or longer...
I gave you the numbers... yet no intelligent response
FACTS ARE FACTS
1.) Hill is the best QB we have so get over it
2.) You are an idiot
Thats great!!!!! 2 more TD's 21 less INT's in 18 less games
Hill will have to average over 1 INT per game over the next year to be as bad as Smith
And be fined 2 TD's + any more he gets, by the league for taking Performance De-hancing drugs.
Brekkon proves further that you are an idiot with his points...
Hill plays great within the system... if you want change the system has to change
dude ...u gonna try harder if you r trying to bait me into insulting you.....
am a instant 49er vet - u should know this!!!!
why are you guys so fixiated on A.Smith....the guy is not playing
focus on the guy playing...(that is what i am doing)
those are powerful facts...
SHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILLSHAUNHILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LMAO! One_niner is generally a tool. Let's get that out of the way.
But his point of 0-8 (when really it was 0-11) is a valid point. Now to put the blame on Hill is retarded. Hill is given a play and he attempts to execute it. Granted on 11 plays it wasn't executed, but very few of them are on his shoulders.
If you're going to hold someone to the fire for not making a first down on that last drive, it's Raye. He called 3 run plays that garnered 4 yards and 14 seconds run off the clock. You can't run 3 running plays against a team who has completely shut your running game down and has all 3 of their timeouts.
The only way you WIN, is to get that first down. At some point, Raye is going to need to call plays to WIN and not just "NOT TO LOSE".
All that being said, bringing up Alex Smith in the arguement is lame. It is comparing apples and donkeys. But I get ya'll are just tryin to get one_niners goat.
walk away guys, many of us, me included, have been where you are now feeling you have to make your case.
Please don't feed the chimp.
"If you're going to hold someone to the fire for not making a first down on that last drive, it's Raye."
dude you cant blame guy
his QB just completed ZERO passes 8 times on 3rd downs
Why would yu expect him to believe in another pass?
in raye's defense it was a guanrantee if he ran the ball time will tick off
but after 8 times - even you will call a QB sneak if yu had no RB...:)
cmon ZERO for 8....
You must have no friends and live in your mothers basement
nate isn't close to ready.
best you will get is a qb in the draft next year... will be 6-7 guys to consider and 2 first round picks.
but even if we draft one, or continue to try and develop nate davis,
I would still prefer he sit for a year.
So clearly, oneniner, you missed the last drive that Hill lead them down for a TD through the air, right?
You can blame Raye because he called plays that WERENT GOING TO WORK or take time off the clock.
Here are those 8 plays that Hill was ???? 0 for 8 on 3rd down?
3-5 Hill to coffee Coffee bobbles it... INC
Chimp says Hills fault Hill 1/1
3-1 Hill to Bruce. Pass defended good coverage.
Chimp says Hills fault Hill 1/2
3-22 Screen is called It is read and we gain 1
Chimp says Hills fault Hill 2/3
3 - 9 everyone is coverered Hill throws it away
Chimp says Hills fault Hill 2/4
3 - 12 Hill to VD for 11 We got 1st after going for it on 4th but....
Chimp says Hills fault Hill 3/5
3-8 Hill to VD for 4 Davis cant break tackle.... Damn you Hill
Chimp says Hills fault Hill 4/6
3-15 Hill to Robinson for 8
Chimp says Hills fault Hill 5/7
3 - 17 Hill to VD for 8
Chimp says Hills fault Hill 6/8
Hill was 75% on 3rd down..... THE TEAM... not Hill... THE TEAM was 0% converting on 3rd down!
..its TRUE
We spent years complaining about the WR's position - the one year we have them - we cant get them the ball
the fact that our best and deepest position is not getting any attention is CRAZY
To make it more CRAZY - its all one and one coverage, nobody is getting double teamed
Can anybody explain this?
...this touture (sic) has to stop
Aaah, the irony...
Hill was 75% on 3rd down..... THE TEAM... not Hill... THE TEAM was 0% converting on 3rd down!
LMAO...loool...:)
ha ha ha ha.........oh God....this is funny...lol
0 for 8 on 3rd downs...:)
LMAO! By your own logic of "it worked in training camp....it worked in practice"....
How did they "work" against the Vikings? We had 58 yards RUSHING. how exactly did ANY run plays work?
And by that same logic, did they work against AZ?
It's cute that they work in "training camp" and "practice" but you must change it up if it's not working IN THE GAME.
And of those 8 passes that were incomplete, none mattered in the end, because NO PASS PLAYS WERE CALLED TO ACHEIVE A FIRST DOWN ON THE FINAL DRIVE.
Let's debate....
stop spewing nonsense.. just answer yes or no
1.) Did Hill throw 2 TD's?
2.) Were the 49ers in position to win game?
3.) you keep talking about 0 - 8. How did that have anything to do with the outcome??? None of those were after the Niners were in a position to win with a 4 point lead
i thought there were a lot of positives for this game:
1. VD-the dude can catch now and hold on. tough dude, pro-bowl year.
2. the defense adjusted to the Vikings(not blitzing, and the vikings couldn't score)
3. The go for it on 4th down in 2nd quarter.... awesome call by Coach Sing....
4. Shaun Hill is getting better and better at readying the defenses.
man, have not been this excited about the Niners in about 6-7 years....
Ok sorry everyone he lulled me in I have to stop feeding the chimp.
His last post just shows he is unrealistic and that anything bad is hills fault no one elses but the good things are all the other players.
oneniner,
Common man let it go.
I agree Brekkon....
NO MAS.... I refuse to ever respond to him again
Matt please let us know if a ignore user function is possible.
Please Please please. I hate his posts and do not want to see anymore posts by him. I love open minded debate but illogical rhetoric I just can not stand.
You are far and wide the best beat writer and I enjoy most of your followers comments whether I agree with them or not since they open my range of thinking. But one or two are just not open to talking facts and twist things so poorly its unbearable. They are flamers and I want no part of their agenda.
As hard as I try I still got pulled into an ignorant debate I knew would hold no logic since the other side has no logical basis.
I refuse to feed the chimp anymore who is with me and can just drop any reply's by him....
I think your focusing on that one statistic is over simplifying our loss. While no one will defend going 0-11 on third down as a positive, it is also not the reason we lost. You can point to any number of individual statistics (or even plays -- ahem 101 yd td return?) and say that's "why" we lost, but it isn't an honest critique of the game. So while you're "right" in saying that if we had gotten just one first down on third down, we would have won, I can say the same thing about not allowing a TD return, or about the OC going ultra conservative at the end, or about Mark Roman not being in the perfect position. None of those is the reason we lost. They comprise the events of the game that led to our loss.
Well said now stop feeding him he will only disagree.
He doesnt listen
Yeah, I know, but it's so hard to help myself when he harps on stuff like that. My favorite thing is that he will say things like "prove me wrong" or "these are the facts," but he only responds to people who don't do these things -- and not to people who provide facts counter to his assertions or at least raise reasonable points or questions. It's easy to win a debate if you're the only one having it :)
Why did I let myself get pulled into that black hole that is these discussions with him?
it would have been really nice if dre bly had held on to the ball on the jumped route ;-0
Oneniner,
Seriously, Why don't you just shut the hell up. You say the same thing over and over and over. We get it, you don't like Hill... ok ok.
Now STFU and take your meds. So sick of you flaming every commentary on every article.
Help Matt! Don't read oneniner but I'm getting capel tunnel from the constant paging down.
Josh.... I feel ya Bro The fact he doesn't respond to facts or those that prove him wrong is the give away to ignore him.
49ers_Ck - I know how.... I did it too.
I am soooooo done.
Matt, you are losing credibility and readers by allowing this troll to dominate your site.
Josh.... I feel ya Bro The fact he doesn't respond to facts or those that prove him wrong is the give away to ignore him.
49ers_Ck - I know how.... I did it too.
Ronnie :
;) I think if the 49ers had a better QB he would've caught it.... LOL
I am soooooo done.
Brekkon, it takes disipline. I've been where you are, wanting to state your arguement expecting you can win. It is not possible, it is too easy for him to overlook the facts or to make some up that support his arguement. I find that I enjoy this blog so much more since I've learned that it is easy to avoid his garbage and reframe from being sucked in.
It's now time for my yoga lesson.
Please don't feed the chimp.
oneniner, please let us all know what McCloughan says.
The best QB on our roster is the same QB who has us at 2-1 . . . FACT.
on the positive side (and there were a lot of positives)...
I think it would be nice if matt interviews Vernon Davis.
he was on my radar to really break out this year. he had a great game yesterday, and he seems to be disengaging from his blocks and getting out in patters a lot smoother... not so herky-jerky. he's looking the ball in better too, instead of trying to turn upfield too fast, which was source of a lot of drops earlier in his career. it looks like hill is getting comfortable going to him over the middle. I would still like to see him on more crossing patterns and some delayed screens.
"Help Matt! Don't read oneniner but I'm getting capel tunnel from the constant paging down."
now that's funny
"I think if the 49ers had a better QB he would've caught it"
ok Brekkon... this made me spit water onto my keyboard.
that's funny
Next game against the Rams is, and always was, more important than the Vikings game.
If MM is looking for a GPS game, to me the next game should be the first of the season. Can the Niners come back from a tough loss and beat a team they should beat?
PS I always find it irrational when the OC gets the blame for his last series but doesn't get any credit for getting the team into that position.
Like Martz & the Cards last year, we're told he's crap for not winning the game at the end but gets zero credit for getting the Niners to the position where they could win it. Same goes for Raye yesterday. You have to give him credit for getting the team to within 2 seconds of the win before berating him on his last series.
Anyhoo, the real deal is next week. This loss we can forget quickly (especially when the rest of the division also lost) and move forward.
"Dude", you should have more respect for the word "vet". Do you really think we have forgotten your man crush on Alex Smith over the last three years and now that you realize that's a dead horse you just hitch your wagon up and now go against Raye and the entire offensive team? Are you the spawn of Lowell Cohh? Although you seem to relish and embrace your role as this blogs designated sphincter I, for one, would be praying if I prayed, for your keyboard to wither, shrivel and melt out of sheer embarrassment for your aholiness.
NFL network said they have source claiming Frank Gore is almost certainly out for 2 games...
probably just as well... have get that healed up completely.
"But Spencer's taunt, which appeared to be on the tame side, drew a penalty that superseded the Vikings' penalty for illegal formation."
MM - Why didn't the penalties off-set? Different penalty yards?
I can't stress enough how stupid that call was. And Jarred Allen's forced fumble celebration doesn't draw a flag. Just rediculous.
Guys it really isnt that difficult. Just simply scroll past oneniners post and you wont be pulled into an argument with him. Dont read any of his post. Its that simple!!! You guys are making it difficult by responding to his post. B/c now not only do I have to avoid his post but also the post that respond to his. So please make it easier on all of us and DONT READ HIS POST. Show some discipline for once and quit stooping to his level. Blame yourselves and not him. Its like blaming a young child for bad behavior instead of the parents. A young child will always act up. Its up to the grown ups to act differently. At this point many of you are acting like children and are ruining the comments section on this sight. Remember it takes 2 to tango!!!!
I'm OK with this. Sit and heal for the next two weeks (StL & Atl), then the bye week, hopefully this means he comes back in almost 4-weeks ready to go.
Realfan49, you reminded me of Coaches comments about us not being good enough to take StL as an easy match. Another example of why I like this guy so much, focus! He's one day removed from a tough loss and is already working on getting his club for the following. And I do agree, we should be able to handle the lambs easily, but an over-confident team....
i'm going to make a statement that I thought I would never make...
I'm actually rooting for the Cowboys tonight. (I just threw up in my mouth...)
This is supposed to be a forum to discuss the game and all get to post there opinion. Lets face it some don't have a very good understanding of the game.
But lets remember the purpose of this forum is not to duke it out with other form members. By responding to others comments in a negative way it feeds the converstion in he said vs. he said duel. That is pointless for all.
Lets keep it on track and not get into these personal battles.
HAHA! I tried to grapple with that SAME dilemma earlier. On the one hand, I can't stand the Cowboys and hope they get mashed, but we have Carolina's 1st round draft pick next year. What to do, what to do...
I agree with you Lott, most unfortunately. The higher the pick we have next year the better. But I still feel dirty in hoping the cows win. Ugh.
BTW Does anyone else see the irony in the "don't respond it's useless and you're taking up space on this forum" posts that are also useless and taking up space on the forum? And, yes, I am aware of the irony of THIS post as well...
boy meets girl
girl is a cowboy fan
boy says goodbye
the end
"BTW Does anyone else see the irony in the "don't respond it's useless and you're taking up space on this forum" posts that are also useless and taking up space on the forum? And, yes, I am aware of the irony of THIS post as well..."
hahaha
every Carolina loss builds up my man crush on Taylor Mays. I so want us to draft him.
GO COWBOYS! (threw up again)
"PS I always find it irrational when the OC gets the blame for his last series but doesn't get any credit for getting the team into that position."
The offense did put a couple of good drives together and put some points on the board, but the defense had to do a lot more than carry its own weight in this game and so far this year. Its not so much the 3 straight runs that gave the vikings a second chance at another final drive as it is dramatic ineffectiveness on the majority of our drives. We lead the league in 3 and outs. Our offense isn't the most dynamic in the league, but we have enough talent to not lead the league in 3 and outs. We can't make a living off of our defense stuffing opposing teams 10 times in a row until our offense finally gets into gear for one or maybe two decent drives per half. How often did we have 3rd and much greater than 10 in this game - you might get blown up on a 2nd down and find yourself in that situation occasionally but it is a regular occurrence. It isn't just a question of execution either because the offense often doesn't get a chance to execute with how well the defense has read and diagnosed how to stuff the play coming their way.
In my opinion, you know who, "pukeniner," is the reason and the cause of negativity in going through the commentaries of Matt's Blog! Kind of like "pukeniner" writing 24/7 that Hill's "the reason" for EVERY negative that happens to the 49ers!
pukeniner...you suck more than even Smith does! You suck more than the loss yesterday! You suck more than finding out Gore has a bad ankle sprain! You suck more than a Black Hole!
pukeniner...YOU SUCK!!!!
Excellent points.
Maybe Raye is the OC that's just good enough to get you beat :-)
What makes me a little nervous about the Rams game is that the 49ers are probably playing against a backup QB. They have a pretty horrible record against backup QB's through the years. And that includes the Walsh and Seifert years!
It might be that there isn't much film on a backup to watch for the upcoming game? But for whatever reason, they shouldn't even think of taking this Ram team lightly! I'm sure MS and the coaches aren't. But the players psyche is a hard thing to deal with.
I think Sing will keep them focused. It's a divisional game, at the end of the day...
and coffee gets the whole week to practice with the first team. I am curious to see if they activate sheets...
Everyone needs to get off Raye’s back for the last drive. If he calls a pass and the ball is incomplete, then the Vikes get the ball back with under 2 mins with a timeout. We can all second guess, but if an incompletion was thrown or worse a turn over, then we would be saying that was a dumb play call and the “O” let the defense down. At least they forced all the timeouts to get used up. The logic was that they would punt, pin the Vikes deep, and the D would hold and not give up the big play. It didn’t work out that way. The punt was a touch back, so they had to go 80 yards verse 90. Roman should have taken advantage of the “force out rule” going away and pushed the receiver out before he could get both feet down. Yeah Roman can’t make a big play in the pass game to save his life, but sometimes you just have to tip your cap to the other team. This is one of those instances...
The overall offense game plan was average, but what do you expect from a guy getting back into the swing of calling a game! We got him for continuity because we knew no one else would want him after this season!
They def will activate Sheets in my opinion. Now is a good a time as ever to see what he can do in a real game. They know what M.Rob is all about so this could be a shot for him.
Go Cowboys!!! (I just puked on Lott)
Can you imagine a Goldson and Mays Safety Duo!!!!
"Can you imagine a Goldson and Mays Safety Duo!!!!"
yes Benny... yes I can...
Go Cowboys!!! (I just puked on oneniner)
I was thinking the same thing with the force out at first, but after rewatching the play he didn't have much of a chance to do it after the ball's arrival. If he shoves him out the wr probably drops the ball and a PA flag is thrown and we are all screaming at Roman for giving up an idiot PA at the end of the game instead. The force out rule is more applicable to wr's who jump and obtain possession of the ball in the air and then can be forced out.
"The bottom line he called the things that he called yesterday because they made sense,"
Really? With that many defenders stacked in the box, calling dives repeatedly makes sense?
Well, Singletary says he'll learn from the experience, so I hope he shows it.
No idea what a PA flag is by the way... PI is what I meant.
Do you see any similarities to Mays and another DB that was from USC and played for the Niners??? ;)
78 posts and not one mention of Crabtree... DAMN IT. I just did
I disagree. My complaint is not that they ran 3 times in a row the last two possessions. My complaint is that their playbook when in the lead at the end of the game consists of 1 play they run.
There is more than just 1 run play in the playbook.... I think.... I hope.... if not I'm scared
I have to disagree that you are using the "what if the ball was turned over" "then you would be complaining about the different call" argument because the that's a scenario that was possible with any play they could have called including the one they called.
You cant make calls based on a what if scenario or you will never run a play.
A QB bootleg could have easily gotten a first down on that last drive no throwing involved, highly doubtful he would have fumbled on a bootleg. Not impossible but no more possible than coffee fumbling on an up the gut run.
If he was not going to come close he could have done a slide to end the down. It may not have worked!! But at least we would've been less predictable.
So in summary its not that we had the three and outs. Its that we didn't even try to get a first.
"78 posts and not one mention of Crabtree... DAMN IT. I just did"
I was literally just thinking the same thing, but didn't want to post it...
Ok I am confused.... There is no force out rule anymore.
Why would it have been called a force out if that rule doesnt exist anymore. Or did I read that wrong?
They changed that rule last year or the year before. The Receiver MUST get both feet inbounds even if he is pushed out before the feet hit he must get them in or it is incomplete. No grey areas with that anymore. No more FO rule. Feet in Catch feet out non catch. No matter the reason.
Vernon wasn't only solid, but those were some tough passes. His concentration and focus were excellent - that's a great sign for the rest of the year.
Sing busted Coffee's chops early in the game, let's assume he'll be kicking his butt all week to perform this Sunday.
Suspect the coaches are still learning to trust Hill, his decision making has been pretty solid. On the last series, if he went to pass and held the ball if he didn't have someone open then what happens if he's sacked? They punt from 10 yards further back, pin the ball on the 5 instead of going in the end zone.
Hope they activate Sheets!
How about a tie game tonight so they are all losers???
very observant, but shame on you (crabtree post)
Just read that Bulger's rotator cuff is not torn, it's bruised meaning he might play; it'll probably be Boller that plays though. Also their top WR, L Robinson, is out for the season.
On Coffee, am expecting a huge week from him what with added prep time and focus--Roll Tide!
I will take a cowboys win in exchange for 5 spots moved up on the pick...
(just puked on the picture of Farve in the paper this morning)
The force out rule was eliminated two years ago as you stated. It used to be a judgement call on the behalf of the officials to try to determine whether or not the wr could have come down with 2 feet in bounds under his own momentum if not forced out by a defender. They eliminated this by just saying the wr has to come down with 2 feet in bounds regardless (meaning the rules changed so that the defender is allowed to just shove a wr out of bounds to kill a reception). The defender, however, is not allowed to just throttle a wr out of bounds before the ball arrives as this would be pass interference. If the defender has the opportunity after the arrival of the ball to force the wr out of bounds before they get their two feet on the ground then it is free game. It is a close call with the Roman play as his best opportunity for a shove is prior to the ball's arrival.
Vernon Davis made 3 catches yesterday that he could not make the last 2 years. I also loved when Tim Ryan said he spent his day off last Tuesday catching balls at the Santa Clara facility. Mike Singletary is on record last week saying Vernon Davis is on his way to "being one of the best". These are all very encouraging signs for VD. That loss hurt yesterday and all the talk would have been about VD's breakout game not #4 on the other team. All I could think of was Young hitting Owens and doing the same thing to Favre in 1998.
When you put all your eggs in one basket (Gore), you better not break that egg. It appears that our OC, and maybe the coach, has so convinced himself that this approach will lead us to glory that he is paralyzed when Gore isn't there. The continuing run calls when they were not working with Coffee remind me of Einstein's definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. We better get SOME innovation in our offense, or we are in for a disappointing season.
Yeah thats what I thought.
The thing I noticed about Roman though is he looked like he was stumbling to keep standing up. He didnt even look like he couldve made any type of play on the receiver or the ball.
I am still sore over this lost and everywhere the worst part about it is all the media showing the lucky pass for the winning touchdown! You know what I can not wait unitl sunday for us to play the rams. This team will get better, Jimmy Ray is going to start getting comfortable with this team and S Hill is going to take command.
oneniner you are truly a tool!!!
I feel all of those criticizing Raye, and taking all blame off of Hill are being a little bit hypocritical. Raye executed the game plan. Gore being out hurt our first and second down production, but Coffee is expected to perform like a starter. The game plan was good enough to win except for a miracle play. The defense could have held the receivers in bounds on the last drive, so that the clock wouldn't stop. Hey we win as a team, we lose as a team.
On a bright note Vernon Davis, had his breakout game. I'm really proud of the man and player he is becoming.
I agree flop. Roman is mediocre at best but anyone who thinks it was viable to "just push him out of bounds" never played back there. I've read a lot about the game since Sunday, and I don't think anyone has mentioned another huge play. On the play before the last one, Spencer had a fairly good opportunity to keep a receiver in bounds and, instead took the easy route, wrestling the guy out of bounds. That play happened with 12 seconds left. I wonder if the Vikes could have lined up and spiked the ball. It would have been close. Sometimes it's the little things that beat you. Punting the ball into the end zone didn't help either!

How about the interception opportunity! that would have been six points, maybe the football gods were just on the other side in this game!!!
Since taunting is an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty it overides everything.
Well, they better learn from their loss. It should make them more tough minded for the future.
That taunting call was really nitpicking, especially for where it was on the field.
Old giant fan, Spencer had no shot at keeping that receiver in bounds. He tried, but he had no angle from what I saw. There were other missed opportunities of course, but none of it matters at this point. Move on.
that's the jake delhomme I know and love!
....losing to favre again hurts....
...brought back painful memories of that playoff game at GB....
......I think my FS was robbed a int before the half......need to check that replay again....
Just saw a reply of the final play which I hadn't seen before. Roman was actually in a good spot, except he was not far enough to the back of the end zone.
In fact the ball was thrown right where he was, but he saw the receiver coming over, and Roman broke toward the receiver (more center of the field), then Farve threw the leading pass to the reciever so Roman had to break back towards the corner. Basically he was just turning himself around.
Well I guess if nothing else we know the coaches had the players in the right spot. I'd rather see a player breakdown than coaches who don't know what to expect.
Oh well............
Please do not feed this idiot Niner hater troll and he'll eventually crawl back to his hole.
Matt, is there a way to get rid of this idiot so we as real Niner fans can talk football? Your forum was much more pleasant to visit before this troll's spam.
How about every time he posts the next post should be one word and then move on...
Everyone just post:

HP333-correct -win as a team lose as a team.Finger pointing is a waste of time. Nothing to be ashamed of here. Yes heartbreaking to lose the contest in the final seconds (albeit to a future Hall of Famer and a very stout team)but that is the nature of sport. I feel proud of my team they are formidable and I trust will become more so as the season develops.I can hardly wait to see them play the next game and that feels great as a fan!
Even though I found that amusing. Please lets keep politics off the blog. While I lean left, many others on this blog art right wingers. I don't want to hear their political views on this blog, and they shouldn't have to hear ours. God Bless
holla... let's stay off religion too
I agree we should stay off of religious topics. Did you take offense to my "God Bless"? Its my common form of benediction. I also say "bless you" when people sneeze. However, if I inadvertently injured your sensibilities, I sincerely apologize.
Matt, is it true that the NFL is questioning Sanders regarding Crabtree.
the Cowboys are just absolutely brutal to watch...
Gotta hope Delhomme starts throwing picks again
Regarding Singletary's "not in a prevent defense" comment, I agree with Tony Dungy's comment last night before the Indy-AZ game. He said it was a bad defense for the situation, the Niner's should have been guarding the sidelines and endzone with 12 sec's left, not covering the middle of the field underneath with 5 guys.
However. the point would be moot if Raye had let the offense get just one first down when the Niners had the ball on either of those last two possessions.
hp333: what source are you hearing that from?
Chris Mortensen reported it for ESPN, here is a link
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/09/27/mort-nfl-may-question-deion-over-crabtree-tampering/
Raye didn't have on a helmet and pads. Our offensive line needs to get more push on the ball, Coffee needs to read his holes better, and our receivers and QB need to convert 3rd downs. You guys get on oneniner for bashing Hill, how is bashing Raye any different? We win as a team, we lose as a team. Execute better next week, start a new win streak.
We only got 2 yards a carry in the fourth, thats not getting it done.
I hope you brought enough barf bags for everybody. I share your man crush on Taylor Mays and am even willing to cheer for Dallas if it means we're in position to draft him.
Go Cowboys!
*slaps self in face*
Dang, if the Niners have a top 2 or 3 pick in next April's draft, that really presents them with some intriguing possibilities. Good times coming for Niners.
Is Taylor Mays even the best safety in the coming draft? The kid from Tennessee - Eric Berry - is rated higher. Carlos Dunlap looks like an immediate impact player.
This game has me conflicted as well.
Although I don’t comment often, I read this blog religiously (sorry to bring up religion again). That means that I even have to read the comments section, although reluctantly, because I want to know what anyone has to say about my beloved 49ers (yes that means oneniner as well). You never know where a good idea can come from, so as long as I don’t have to sift through the b.s. of back and forth cat fights…let me hear what you have to say.
I’m an addict, a freak, a nut, and anything else you can think of to describe an obsessed fan so thank you Mr. Maiocco for doing your job better than anyone else in the business.
Now I have three words and only three words to say… CUT MARK ROMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How many veteran viewers on this site remember the stupid game that oneniner did with his alter-ego, Darren? I do. Oneniner is a bored, unemployed, troll who refreshes his MM web page 75 times a day to see who has commented about him.
Please stop feeding the trolls. They really do go away when they can't find food.
I probably refresh my page 40 times a day....thats only because Im employed though.

Pardon my passion for not embracing mediocrity just because we've had to watch Nolan's ineptitude for 4 yrs.
Do you know which team has had the top rushing defense for the last 3 yrs? THE VIKINGS!!!!!! So you're going to try to run the ball on six consecutive plays when you need just 1st down. Not only that, but you tell the defense you're going to run, probably up the middle, by putting Morgan in motion, then stopping him behind the guard and tackle. Also, the only real success you've had running the ball was against Seattle! You want the O-line to play better, mix things up a little and take some of the pressure off them.
Most of the time Jimmy Raye's offense is the exact freaking opposite of Martz's, but the one thing these two offenses have in common: the defense knows whether it's a pass or run 95% of the time. That sure doesn't help the O-line out!
Hill may not be a Bret Favre but he's proved he can move the ball down the field WHEN RAYE LETS HIM! Give him the chance to succeed or fail. It's hard to have a decent passing game if you rarely use it.
COWBOYS WON!!!!
I just puked on my little chihuahua Moose =(
Berry is 5'11 203 lbs... he's rangy and more of a ballhawk who is unreal on the int. returns. a lot of scouts think he's the next Ed Reed. I hear he could even go #1 in the draft.
Mays is 6'3 235 freaking pounds and he runs 4.3. he's more a rover/cruise missile type who hits like a truck. doesn't have the same ball skills as berry... he likes to basically run around from the FS position and hit things really hard.. kind of like Polomalu. but ALOT bigger
If we are in a position to take either, I would be very happy.
Mike Sando of ESPN is reporting Gore out for 3 weeks
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4512366
how bout them Cowboys! (puking on keyboard)
how bout them Cowboys! (puking on my keyboard)
"our cow-bell goes through 21." i guess jimmy raye doesn't know frank gore's injury history. there's no way gore can go through a season healthy. and to say that shaun hill is secondary. i think gore is a great back, but give hill some respect! so far this season, the only time the running work was in seattle. everytime they get behind, raye calls hill's number and he produce!
i notice that jimmy raye's play calling are either a dozen runs, or a dozen passes. please mix it up a bit and give us some creativity!
it's time to share the "cow-bell" and let them BOTH share the responsibility!
I agree with the creativity, also it is time to call Sheets up from the PS. Hill, it is time to grow and anounce your presnace to the NFL.
Ok, Oneniner, that was pretty funny about "Going Rogue". Glad to see you can think of something besides your hatred for all things Niners. Seriously, if you let yourself try, you might not be all that bad, and there may be hope for you after all. We're all in this together as Red Green would say. By game six, Sean Hill will make you forget all about young Alex and hopefully, you will embrace this great season as it unfolds. We are on the right track. I hope you can enjoy it with us.
actually a couple times they had morgan split out to the flat after his motion behind the tackle. but yes, after seeing that formation for the whole game, I agree you'd have to be pretty bad not to account for that wrinkle.
calling running plays was the right call in that situation. 1. worst case scenario hill throws an int for a short pick six, 2. hill throws an incomplete STOPPING the clock, 3. calling running plays with the belief that you are going to impose your will. out of the three options the lowest risk was clearly what they did. unfortunately the team was unable to defeat the viking front seven, this time...
I agree 100%!!
Also, if you look at the Seattle data for Gore:
2 carries for 159 (79.5 per carry)
14 carries for 48 yards (3.4 per carry)
Outside of the two carries, Gore was pedestrian at best.
Also, has it been noted that Vernon Davis had his best game as a pro on Sunday??
I have the same passion as you brother, but I also have patience. We have an identity as a team, and we are sticking to it.
"Pardon my passion for not embracing mediocrity just because we've had to watch Nolan's ineptitude for 4 yrs." GilroyAl
Thats the same type of comment oneniner makes about Hill, and the entire blog treats him like he wiped his but with flag.
The vikings run defense hadn't been as good this year, but I agree Raye could have made different calls. However, hindsight is 20/20, and its unfair to place the blame on Raye's shoulders alone. With a a minute thirty on the clock, when the opponents have no timeouts, you trust your D to win the game. Brett Farve made an amazing play. Lets move on.

Derek Loville, Kevan Barlow, Maurice Hicks. And now introducing the latest in the line of uninspiring Niner running backs: Glen Coffee!
highpriest,
not to argue your point but I think Monday is for griping. Maybe a little Tuesday... but on Wednesday we must move on.
BUT, I do wantto say... if Brett doesn't make that play and we end up winning the game there will STILL be concerns. The reason being we keep grinding and it will bite us as it did. Sing even said it we need to finish. Our run game is NOT good. I don't know what it is exactly but we are barely getting by. And trust me, every DC knows it.
Noway in the world do you expect your OL to all of a sudden get a push. They have been subpar all year with the run attack.
Ok, I'm going to sleep. Tomorrow, let's talk Rams. No Crabtree.
You seem to disagree for the sake of disagreeing… Well let’s dissect your disagreements. “A turnover is possible on any play called”; so is the possibility of a first down so what is your point? If you read what I wrote, I stated that if they threw the ball and had an incompletion that stopped the clock or turned the ball over, then everyone would be in an uproar. In addition, there is less risk running the ball than throwing in that situation and if you disagree with that, then I know you just like being a contrarian.
“You can’t make calls on what if scenarios”; that being said you can’t say what a QB bootleg would have easily gotten! You can’t discredit something, then turn around and try to uses it to validate your point! Here’s one, what if he ran a naked boot and turned around to find Jarred Allen’s facemask in his chest while the ball was being scooped up by an outside LB; or what if Hill ran the boot and trucked P. Williams and stiff armed a safety on his way into the end zone; or better yet what if Brett Favre stayed retired and was still in Mississippi watching the game! Riiiiiight…
My original point is that they played it the right way; they just didn’t get the stop when they needed to. You can disagree and complain all you want about Raye’s play calling, but the other point I made is that he hasn’t called plays in years and is getting back into the flow of things. He wasn’t an offensive genius, he is a guy that was brought in because they knew he wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon for another job! We just have to deal with it and hope he evolves…
Damn, I am so tired of seeing the replay of the Viking TD yesterday. Is it OK to root for GB to kick the crap out of them this week?
I agree with the run calls...
Dang, it's week 3 and you're ready to throw him in with the also-rans? I really hope you are wrong, I am hoping for a big week from him this coming.
I agree with the moving on part! The delima now is who gets cut to make room for Sheets? I would say Spurlock, but he is ahead of J. Hill on the depth chart and a special teamer. Since Jones is healthy, he can play and Spurlock would likely clear waivers. I have a feeling J. Hill may clear waivers, but a as a 3rd rounder he may not. Plus, what would the financial ramifications be for cutting a 3rd rounder. I think he would walk away and try to sign on with another team’s P- squad. Heck, I know the Rams could use him! Decisions, decisions...
Seriously ENder???
Coffee will be better than your list of chumps
I think Coffee will be pretty good. This summer he seemed to learn from his mistakes and make steady progress. Even Sunday he looked a bit better in the second half than he did in the 1st. He didn't have a lot of yards but he wasn't repeating the same mistakes. Let's not forget that Vikes are one of the better run-stopping teams in the NFL.
We will likely miss Frank's blitz pickups. We're going to see a bunch more blitzes until we make the D pay on both run and pass blitzes.
Please don't compare my reasoning with 'he who shall not be named'. As Steve Young( HOF QB), you remember him, stated last week on KNBR those people who don't appreciate how well Hill is doing as QB don't know anything about football. I don't have a crush on Hill either like 'hwsnbn' has on Alex, as I was rooting for Smith to win out this summer. One thing you can't take away from Hill though, he may not look pretty out there but he's been a winner.
First downs keep the other offense off the field.
You know the definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results. If the Niners O-line had been playing together for 2-3 yrs I'd be a lot more patient with Raye's calls, but this is still a young, inexperiencd line. They need help from the OC too to help build their confidence. It's bad enough when you constantly use the same running plays but when you telegraph them so bad most of the fans watching can tell it's a run up the middle that's pretty bad play calling. This also is not a one time thing, have you been watching each game? How many times do you try to run into a brick wall before you figure out there must be a better alternative especially when just one 1st down would win the game? Jimmy Raye, can you say play action pass?
Didn't Coffee just have a full week with the #1's? Gore didn't practice one day. It is disappointing that he looked as rusty as he did, but it was his 1st real nfl game. Our run offense hasn't exactly been lighting anyone up other than porous Seattle although I'm sure a veteran like Gore could have found a few more yards here and there if healthy. Coffee is going to be good in time, don't expect him to be lighting it up until he gets more used to nfl speed.
Our gameplan has to get more imaginative if we are going to have more run success. If teams at least respected our passing game we could be more of a running team. They put the straps down on Hill until times are desperate, need to work on more balance so that they are throwing punches with more than just their right for half the game. I know were working toward it, but I would have loved to see the same call as that 4th and 1 on that last drive. PA with Morgan breaking out of that slot on a screen. If he's covered, have Hill try to make something happen with his legs. If you get swamped, take the sack and have more room to punt. Bah, the last drive I don't even have a problem with, just wanting more balance sooner... running into walls is just frustrating and physically pounding on our backs and OL. Might be doable against weak run defenses, but you have to take what a defense will give you when the run keeps getting stuffed.
I get most of my grieving out on Sunday. My point was,
blame the team as a whole, not just Raye. There is plenty of blame to go around. But don't forget people, the Vikings were one of the preseason Super Bowl favorites. I don't take solace in any loss. But I do have perspective. We just came one NFL films classic play away from winning the game on the road. I'll gripe an extra day if we lose at home to the Rams.

That's very true. and look at the brightside, he did much better than peterson did his rookie season against the niners. and the vikings are supposed to be a better defense against the run with those two fatties in the middle.
I'm glad we have a voice of reason. Raye bashing is just as bad as Hill bashing. The team is still learning how to execute the offense properly. Blame the team as a whole for not playing 60 minutes. We learned not to celebrate to early.
You wanna talk about horrible play calling. Carolina's OC seemed to be pretty clueless. Even tho the 9ers have the Panthers 1st round draft pick next year. I still couldn't root for the Cowgirls...
That was some horrible horrible playing calling tonight by the Panthers OC You really have to wonder sometimes about how some people get these jobs.
It's so early in the season. Some of you have been watching football for over 30 years and still get caught up in the September hype. Nothing really starts happening until the end of October. Right now it is positioning and weeding out the weak teams.
This is the first time in a long time that we will not be one of the September weeds. We are going to be in every game this year.
And you have no idea what the offense is going to look like in 2 weeks. We have the weapons. We have a good football team. It's evident is it not? Long ways to go fellas
Exactly, the 49er fan base are called The 49er Faithfull. Faith seems to be lacking in many of the 49er fans on this post today. One loss in September isn't the end of the season.
First off I DO NOT disagree with the fact we ran 6 times on the last 2 drives. What I disagree with is doing the exact same run 6 times.
What I am saying is we should have mixed it up so the opposing D did not know exactly how we were going to run at them.
I never said we needed to pass instead. However if a "wide open" pass presented itself since the other team committed to an up the gut on the bootleg then yes we should've tried. Even if it meant an incomplete. Otherwise Hill should've gone for the first to the point of not risking losing the ball. I would trust hill to be smart enough to only make a short throw to a wide open receiver or go down and protect the ball.
Now just because I said you "CAN NOT" base your plays on the what if does not mean I countered my own statement.
You are correct in one part, there is no way to tell if the bootleg would've worked for a first down. However, you are the one then turning around the argument back to what I said you cant do. The fact is running the exact same play 3 times in a row IS a benefit to the other team. Always, that is not a "possibility" its a fact!
Math tells me a bootleg with a slide will remove more time than an up the gut run. Because the distance to the point of the tackle is longer 99% of the time. Plus you would have Morgan to block for him.
Now with your last statement I 99% agree. I believe Raye is rusty. I agree it will take time but I also don't believe it takes to the 4th week to learn a new ,4th qtr with the lead, run play other than an up the gut run. He needs to learn this a little quicker than he is learning it. If everyone else sees it and he doesn't, then we should be concerned.
Don't get me wrong I am not calling for Raye's head. I am saying he needs to change it up a little more. I can not predict that the game would have been any different if he had changed it up more. What I can say is it would have made it look a lot better and provided one less possibility of why we lost.
The play calling was not perfect. The more things you improve the more things you can cross of your list of possible causes. Fixing the little things can sometimes remedy the issue. However your right sometimes it cant fix the issue but why leave them unfixed just because doing so MAY not fix the issue. That's just nonsense.
Better Play calling = better CHANCE of winning that game
However, Better Play calling doesn't guarantee a win
Good comment Brekkon.
I also agree that people picking one person (Raye, Hill, Singletary, OL, Roman, the equipment guy) and blaming them for the loss is ridiculous. But I have no problem with people finding areas where all of the above can learn and improve. For me, that's what it is about.
Yes, we got beat by a miraculous throw with 2 seconds left by the dagger-in-the-heart Favre. I just want Singletary, Raye and company to get improvement in the play of their players, and in their coaching Can anyone truly say that they have arrived? Of course not. On the right track, but improvement still needed.
And John from HB, I have to agree about the Panther 1st round pick vs. rooting for the Cowboys. I knew how much it could help the 49ers to see the Cowgirls beat them. But I...just...couldn't...root...for the Cowpukes. It led to a discussion with my wife over exactly what circumstance could I ever root for them in a game. The only answer? If they had to win for the 49ers to make the playoffs. And if that was the case, I would feel like a slut afterward and have to take a long shower to wash off the slime.
Faith seems to be lacking?????? The loss wouldn't be anyway near as bad to us faithful if we weren't as totally faithful as we are. Some of us have invested a lot of time and emotion in this team over the years and some of us have invested money as season ticket holders.
That being said there are only 16 regular season games and this not the Niner team of the 80s. You can't be giving away games you should have won. Ask the Niner team that went 10-6 and didn't make the playoffs back in that era. Just one more WIN. Those of us who have had to watch Favre beat the Niners 12 out of 13 or 14 games know you can't give him extra chances. This loss was as frustrating as the AZ game last year.
I commend you for seeing things through rose colored glasses but you need to clean them once in a while to see reality. There is such a thing as justified criticism, it's how you make things better by putting VALID points out there not the tripe 'hwsnbn' writes just get attention.
..yaaawnn.....plz go to bed....
excuses, excuses, excuses....
Hey OneNiner,
Bring back Huard? Yeah, that will help.
Everyone, let's just stop reading his posts. To many asinine comments like that one from him.
Face it Oneniner, Hill is not only the best we have at the moment but is better than several starters in the league right now. I too, believe we could use a QB upgrade, but so could a lot of teams with serviceable QB's. And Hill is serviceable QB.
Ask Carolina, Dallas, Miami or Tampa Bay if they wouldn't mind Hill right now.
Watch his throws, he's on target way more than he's off target and doesn't gamble on a meaningless play. Sure, he could NEVER make a play like the one Favre did but how many QB's playing right now could?
The INT he threw on the play nullified by a delay of game penalty was not a perfect throw but not a bad one. He was going for a TD. The DB made a good play and Hill got no help from Davis to try to stop the DB from catching the ball. The same play was run again and resulted in a Davis TD catch in the end zone.
Hill is the best of what we have and it could be A LOT worse.
If you can't see that fact, then you should be following another sport because you obviously don't know much about football. Either that or you may need to be committed because you are having problems accepting reality.
...yea i agree with you, stop reading but comment on what you havn't read....
.....i just called those teams and they want to trade their 1st round pick for Hill.....
And one more thing.
Losing that game sucks. It was a REALLY hard loss. But it's not the end of the world. They are still 2-1. The Niner's will learn from this one. I think this loss will wake them up and that's the last we'll see of that end of game philosophy. They got away with it in Arizona but they realized that winning teams have their offense on the field as the clock winds down, not their defense.
...guess we will see...
the rams should be easy......but then again we don't have Gore, so we will see what our QB can bring to the table....
he did have his best game of his career (well one quarter or half of a game) against the rams....so this should be a blow out...
am always happy when beating on the rams....
..brings back memories of K.Norton Jr punching the bag
I kinda like that 'HWSNBN' But will everyone understand that it is an acronym for "He Who Shall Not Be Named"
In a best case scenario, Coffee rushes for over 100 yds in both of the games Gore will miss and we know we have a legit backup. Also, the competition might just elevate Gore's performance ala Joe Montana & Steve Young. I guess a 3rd benefit is that Gore won't be as beat up at the end of the season with an early season rest. Just lookin for the silver lining...
And how did the Rams get blown out last year when they came to the Stick, you ask??? At the hands of S.Hill. Lets hope for a repeat, or even BETTER performance.
Hey Oneniner, join me in three cheers for Shaun Hill!!! 15 of 20, 213 yards, 2 touchdowns, NO PICKS, and a passer rating of 142.3!
Matt just twittered that the Niners probably won't activate Sheets this week and are gonna go with just Coffee and Robinson-yikes...
I know you made this comment a while ago, sorry I'm so late. But there's a difference between someone saying a player is "mediocre," and saying he out right sucks and doesn't deserve the job he's earned, especially if his performance doesn't warrant such harsh criticism.
That’s why I rip people when they diss Shaun Hill, it’s when they offer no constructive criticism, negative or not, and just say “oh he sucks,” or “he wouldn’t start for any other team,” or “Nate Davis should start.” How the hell does any of that help anyone at all? Fans that make those types of comments clearly have no freakin' clue about a damn thing.
The Rams scare me.... we need to jump on them fast and dominate them from the beginning. Yeah they suck but I need to see how the team responds.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE activate Sheets!!! I hope MM is wrong about this one.
oneniner... your attitude 2day is a lot better!!! Hill will do just fine =)
And people it's SHAUN not Sean
..cmon dude....its the rams....
...its an insult to even think we can lose this game...
..its da sorry rams......as much as i dont approve of our QB play - i cant even convince myself this will be a tough game....
the defense will score at least 2tds.....hopefully this game will be over by the half so we can see our back-ups play in the 4th.....
...i won't lie ....i am excited about the presumed 4 - 1 record before the bye....
.....our season will depend on those 3 AFC team after the bye.....titans, houston, colts....
we have a great chance of going 2-1 in those games.....
I'm also excited about potentially going 4-1 and then a bye. I say we have a great chance of going 3-0 with the AFC three we face after the buy,but that's just me. Obviously the toughest of the three is Indie, after seeing Warner demolished by Indies pass rush, it does worry me. I bet Warner's having second thoughts about his decision to stay in AZ.
Any given Sunday. Don't sleep on the Rams.
"Singletary said he did not fault safety Mark Roman, who was the closest man to Lewis in the 49ers' four-across zone coverage. But, Singletary said, "If he was in good position, he would've made the play. So, no, he was not in great position. But the thing is, they just made a football play. There are some times the quarterback throws the ball and the guy's in position to make a play. That's what happened."
The problem here is that Mark Roman does not make ANY plays ......
I'd actually feel better with Bulger starting for them than Boller. Bulger is pretty shell-shocked at this point in his career. I'm hoping Boller doesn't start and give them a spark... I expect the Niners to win this game, they're not the same team as '07, Singletary won't allow them to wallow in the loss and go into a downward spiral like the way Nolan did. But like you said, any given Sunday... This team is solid but I don't think they're where they need to be yet, you can't just look at the schedule and start counting wins.
THIS IS A CRABTREE COMMENTARY...
I was angry at Crabtree and his agent until I began to think even more about what I've been seeing from this offense. It's apparent to me now that Eugene Parker studied Jimmy Raye's offense and determined that Michael Crabtree will never earn nearly as big a second contract playing in this system as he might elsewhere. So, in fact, Crabtree would be losing money in the long run to sign here. Not to mention -- what I think he cares about more -- the ability to fully utilize his abilities (which he may think could put him in Canton someday, but NOT if he plays for Jimmy Raye).
So, to me, this is a scathing indictment of Scott McCloughan and Jed York. Do they not understand what bringing in such a conservative offensive coordinator means to potential draftees and free agents? Jimmy Raye is Jerry Rice and Joe Montana REPELLENT!
Everyone in the SF media is talking about how they'll have to adapt their offense and loosen the reigns. But what Parker and Crabtree already know is that Raye is only capable of what we've seen so far. A real passing game would be beyond his capacity to design and implement. So I don't blame Crabtree or any future WR who believe they could be pro-bowlers for steering clear of our neanderthal OC.
Lets give Raye a little more time. I have been very critical of him but want to see if he learns from the first few games. After all, the guy hasn't really run an offense in 7 or 8 years. The 9ers are currently 28th in the league in 3rd down conversions (27.3%). 30th in the league in 1st downs (42). 28th in the league in yards per game. BUT... They are 10th in the league in scoring. Sing's plan was to win games with Defense and Special Teams. Looks like that's exactly what's happening. Raye is managing a bad offense right now. Let's give him til the Bye week before we start calling for his head.
I think some 49ers fans need to relax and just enjoy the season. The team is 2-1 and is leading the division with the Rams up next. This team is still learning to win after not being in the playoffs in a few years. Cut the players and coaches some slack. They could've lost the first game if not because of that one drive. Even in their dynasty years, they have lost games in the last second. If you look at the roster, there are no Hall of Fame players except Willis and Bruce, who is out of his prime. I think Coach Singletary has motivated this team to believe in themselves, but look at the roster. Let's have fun this season instead of all these second guessing. Go 49ers!
Looks like Gore is out 3weeks huh. I think Coffee will do great. Wish they would activate sheets. Always looking forward to the Niner Ram game.
I totally agree with oneniner. He is simply pointing out the cold hard facts, SHAUN HILL IS A GARBAGE QB!!!!He will not win us a championship this year or in 2011 or 2012, so why is he playing? He is simply playing to make the 49ers respectable again, by being a average team!!!!!! The organization wants to not be the laughing stock of the league thats it....This franchise has no championship aspirations anymore. You guys might hate Alex Smith, but he has the ability to be an All-pro championship caliber qb, Hill does not... Alex is probaly a bust!!!!So this organization must get Sam Bradford to make this franchise championship caliber again!!!!!!
...let sleeping dogs lie.......for now!!!!
...where is MM - I need my fix....
I think that not activating Sheets is a telling sign that the team probably won't sign Crabtree. They'd probably have to release a WR to activate him and between Crabtree not signing Isaac Bruce's potential retirement next year, they're gonna need the WRs they have (which of course includes Jason Hill)
mecca49er... Do you have a time machine? Can you read the future?
Oblivious not so just shut the heck up. If Shaun Hill turns into the next Romo where he gets you to the post season and then loses it for the team then start talking. Until then be happy for what we have as a team.
We're going to be 4 - 1 (inches away from 5 - 0) going into the bye. If that doesn't make you happy after the last 7 years then nothing will
All you guys assuming the 9ers are going to be 4-1 need to STFU!!!! You're going to put the jinx on the team. There are absolutely NO gimme's in the NFL. The Rams have a team of professional athletes that are playing to continue careers. They are very dangerous and could absolutely beat the 9ers. We can hope they'll win but let's not ASS U ME they will win.
Matt, I just listened to the press conference online. At first I was getting irate at what I deemed "stupid questions" by your fellow journalists, but apparently after listening to talk radio, there are a few that actually want to entertain the idea of Nate Davis. Just wanted to say thanks for asking the real questions (You know they are good questions when you can hear Coach Sing, brace for the question.) You and Beerows make for great reads, unlike others who cant even get the names of players correctly.
On the subject of the game. 11 failed 3rd down conversions is what killed us. Not Roman's coverage, not Lawson getting there 1/2 step to late, Not Dre's dropped INT.
Raye decision to run on that 3rd and 4th I dont particularly disagree with, had we had Gore in the game. Coffee wasn't struggling, but he wasn't exactually getting it done either. It was the right decision although I would like to see some variations and see us go for the go ahead 1st. Hill has shown he can be clutch when it counts, give him the opportunity because in 14 more games, if we find ourselves in that situation again, you know damn well the opposing DCord is stacking the box. And no I dont think Hill is the 2nd coming of Montana. His pocket presence is atrocious. Watching E.Manning or even Romo slide out the pocket and make time is completely different from what Im used to seeing with Niners Qb's. (Smith and his double pump sack, Hill with his best fullback dive impression when feeling heat) Despite all this, its the first time in years I can say, hey maybe this year we really have a chance. GO NINERS
Mecca49er states: "You guys might hate Alex Smith, but he has the ability to be an All-pro championship caliber qb,"
Based on what criteria??? Running to the right sideline 85% of the time and throwing the ball out of bounds, and over throwing wide open recievers for ints doesn't make "All-pro championship caliber qb" in ANYBODY'S All Pro book!
None of us "hate Smith," but he had more than enough chances to beat out Hill and failed. He had so many chances, it even hurt Hill in getting ready for the start of the season! Hill gets better in each game that he plays! He won the game with no running back, but the defense failed to hold the lead he gave the team! MS LOVES Hill! He's the type of QB this team needs at the stage it's at right now!
Time for those like you who HATE Hill to open your eyes and feel blessed we have him right now! He's theeee maaaaaan right now! Chew on it and swallow it!
Dude your pretty amusing… After reading your personal memoirs, I realize that you must have aspirations to be a lawyer... No, you didn’t say we needed to pass but you did mention that a turn-over is a possibility on what ever play called. You didn’t mention it earlier but obviously my assertions were right because you just committed to the thought now! So since you are throwing numbers around, surely you realize the chance of a turn over double during a pass because it can be either intercepted or a fumble may occur. That is why I brought up passing in that situation. Yet still you think passing and taking that chance is a viable option. Ok what ever… I don’t like the runs up the gut either but I’ll take it over a pass in that situation any day!
You contradicted yourself on the what if point and yet you are too arrogant (or maybe stubborn) to admit it. Then you try to spin it so it seems that I was focused on the “what if”. It was sarcasm and that is what I was using to show you the fallacies in your argument. Did you notice that you continued on describing what if situations further in your last dissertation? THAT MY FRIEND IS A CONTRADICTION!
This is what we signed up for with Singletary’s/Nolan’s SF-Raven’s vision. The man changed but the philosophy didn’t; so why are we surprised by conservative offensive play calling? All I know is they did what they did and it didn’t work. We can continue playing Monday morning QB/ backseat coach and analyze everything, but it doesn’t change the fact that they did what the felt was the best thing. I agree with it, you don’t… Coaches put players in position to make plays and players have to make plays… We lost; end of story… I’m moving on now! The RAMS are next so I’ll see what you have to say after this victory… I can’t believe I let you bait me into writing long ass monograph too! Its all fun though…
False claims?....hmmmm I wonder if your just "He who should not be named" using a different ID?
You are the idiot. I never COMMITED TO THE THOUGHT OF PASS ONLY. You need to take an english class!!! I will explain it to you then you say whatever you want because I refuse to reply to you further unless you prove your lies. You are making claims that are not true.
The only time I said anything about a pass is if we had a "WIDE OPEN PASS" Let me repeat a few times so it gets through your thick skull.
"WIDE OPEN PASS"
"WIDE OPEN PASS"
"WIDE OPEN PASS"
Here is my Quote "I never said we needed to pass instead. However if a "wide open" pass presented itself since the other team committed to an up the gut on the bootleg then yes we should've tried. Even if it meant an incomplete. Otherwise Hill should've gone for the first to the point of not risking losing the ball."
A Bootleg does not mean Pass. It means the misdirect with a run up the middle and then Him scrambles with ball in hand away from the scrum. He would then Have Morgan as a lead blocker that is also an eligible receiver.
If the One safety that was left passed Morgan that would have left him WIDE OPEN WIDE OPEN WIDE OPEN then yes pass it. Because ZERO PERCENT INT probability for a wide open pass. There would have been nobody around to intercept it. So turnover probability DOES NOT DOUBLE.
DOES NOT DOUBLE
DOES NOT DOUBLE
DOES NOT DOUBLE
That is not guessing at a hypothetical because the only safety left would have had to commit to either the QB or Morgan and releasing Morgan with no one to stop him wouldve = WIDE OPEN PASS FOR TD OR INC NOT AN INT. So he wouldve needed to engage Morgan until hill crossed the line or someone else caught up to the play. EITHER WAY MORE TIME OFF THE CLOCK MINIMUM.
A bootleg can be a designed play to allow multiple options for the QB it also allows the quarterback in that scenario to err on the side of caution.
Saying "well if a different play was called he couldve turned it over". Is a way to justify a poorly called play.
Lastly you are a complete Moron. No where did I contradict myself in that post. If you think I did prove it otherwise you are just trying to incite me. SO Screw YOU & STOP TRYING TO TWIST WHAT I AM SAYING!!!
You just want to be right about saying a pass is never an option. Though that is true a majority of the time it is not true 100% of the time. There are plays that have PASS OPTIONS that are viable in that scenario.
Also You act as though I complain about everything and I don't. I defend an awful lot that happens with our team. All I originally said was we should have done something other than a up the gut run. Then you stated well if we did that they could've fumbled. I told you why that wasnt a valid reason to not do something else. Then you decided to attack what I said cause you felt I pissed in your wheaties.
