NFL: 49ers, Crabtree need to work it out
The NFL does not plan to investigate whether teams have tampered with unsigned 49ers draft pick Michael Crabtree, an NFL spokesman said this morning.
Deion Sanders, speaking on the NFL Network on Friday, intimated two NFL teams have gotten word to Crabtree that they're willing to pay him more than the five-year, $20 million contract the 49ers are offering.
"Two teams have contacted the San Francisco 49ers desiring a trade and will pay this kid. And he knows that," Sanders said of Crabtree. He did not name the two teams, and the 49ers denied Friday that any teams contacted them about acquiring Crabtree in a trade. The deadline passed three weeks ago for unsigned draft picks to be traded.
Sanders is intimately close to the situation. He has known Crabtree for years and served as a mentor. Sanders spoke several times with 49ers coach Mike Singletary prior to the draft to vouch for Crabtree's character. During his playing career, Sanders was represented by Eugene Parker, whom also represents Crabtree.
When asked if the league intends to follow up on Sanders' statements, the league said it would not.
"This is an issue to be worked out by the 49ers and Michael Crabtree, not our office," said NFL senior vice president of public relations Greg Aiello.
Sanders said the 49ers have offered Crabtree $20 million for five seasons, but added, "To me, that's not good enough."
Added Sanders, "Yeah, they have an extra $8 million, yeah, but if he catches more balls than Jerry Rice in the first or second year. And with their quarterback situation, that's not going to be the case. So he's looking at real numbers. Some of these young guys never make it to the second contract. You may never get another chance."

Here's are the articles in today's Press Democrat: "Deion adds his two cents on Crabtree issue," and "49ers roster cuts on the way."

Does this team really need this personality on it's roster?
After watching this team in preseason, I say sign this guy and next year trade him for a new GM...
So, the league is saying, officially, that its officials are biased against the Niners?
"The NFL does not plan to investigate whether teams have tampered with unsigned 49ers draft pick Michael Crabtree, an NFL spokesman said this morning."
Is the league not looking to this because they don't feel that tampering occurred, or because an investigation requires the Niners to file a formal complaint? If there was in fact tampering, I don't understand how "this is an issue to be worked out by the 49ers and Michael Crabtree" per the NFL spokesman. The league sure showed interest in the Lance Briggs case.
Yeah, compare Crabtree to Jerry Rice, that will make people out here love him even more than they already do. Idiot.
Obviously, this kid is getting all kinds of bad advice from people around him. Or he is just stupid and greedy. Either way, nobody wants to hear about already overpaid athletes complaining about the MILLIONS they get paid to play a GAME. Especially when that athlete has NEVER played 1 second in the pros.
Hey Crabtree, this is THE BAY AREA. These are THE 49ERS. You are NOBODY to us. You played 2 seasons in a mickey mouse college offense in which you were always open, in a conference that plays NO defense at all. We are used to legends out here. NFL legends with a lot of CLASS. Not small town college ones. Right now your just some overrated greedy kid from Texas. You have to earn yours out here, pal. If you don't want to be a 49er, then kick rocks. Amateur.
Surprise , surprise , the league won't do any investigation into tampering but for da Bears, 2 unanswered phone calls from the Niners supposedly constitutes tampering. Just as I said in an earlier, Goodell hasn't got the gonads to get invlolved in this because Jerry Jones and the Cowboys just might be involved in this with Deion's allegiance to the Cowboys. What a puppet. I find it funny that the only info from the Crabtree camp seems to come from everybody but the agent. Strange!
Since the Tuck Rule, the refs of Superbowl XL, Briggs and now this, I get the feeling the NFL official just hates the West Coast.
couldn't have said it better myself!
Clearly the contract negotiations are between the Niners and Crabtree. But per Deion, somehow Crabtree has knowledge that two NFL teams are willing to pay him what he wants and the league isn't the least bit curious? Really? Pretending for a second that Primetime isn't completely full of excrement and two teams did contact the Niners, they would obviously never reveal that to Crabtree. So who told Crabtree? I think finding that out would be a league matter . . . especially since an employee of the NFL network made the statement.
If the Niners made their offer in June (and not changed it since), it cannot have been calculated based on the contracts of the players above and below him. Or even Heyward-Bey. I don't think any of those deals were done until late July/August.
Personally, I wouldn't put much faith into Deion's words. He was asked to appear and being Neon Deon, he mouthed off a lot to get the attention. He's clearly not part of the Crabtree/Parker team.
The situation seems pretty clear, Crabtree thinks he's worth more than the Niners are offering and the Niners are refusing to negotiate. Fans are getting screwed. Jed needs to get off his butt and start talking to them.
I'm tired of hearing about this selfish, gold digging diva... He's not worthy of being a 49er. He has the power to sign at anytime... Screw the clown. He's better off sticking to his fashion dream...
Exactly... Welcome to the East Coast League.
The only fan who thinks they're getting screwed is you. And you still never answered my question.
I'm tired of hearing about this selfish, cheapskate billionaire owner. He's not worthy to be team owner. He has the power to get Crabtree to sign anytime. Screw the clown. He's better off sticking with his ivy league buddies instead of playing at team president ....
Sigh... Matt had a nice write-up here you might want to read regarding Crabby and his demands... The Yorks have not been shy about taking care of their players... They've spent big in FA in recent years... It's not like they've been cheap. Crabby is living in fantasy land. Get a clue.
I agree. Obvious collusion if that is true. And the league doesn't even want to investigate? The Niners should have people all over this, trying to find the sources and find the angles. We should be doing anything we can to try and prove that the cowgirls, deion, and Crabtree have been in talks.
Stick it to the cowgirls, and their fans anytime you get a chance.
RealFan: The Niners are not refusing to negotiate at all. Jed said they are in almost daily contact with Parker.Paraag and Parker must talk all the time. Once Parker comes to his senses and stops this absurd hold out ploy, with all the propaganda etc, they can get to real negotiations. I am certain that the Niners will give and take, like in any negotiation.Jed said that they want Crabs to be happy when he signs and comes to the team,so they will do whatever possible to make him happy. Some things are not possible, like paying him the extortion money Parker is doing a poor job of trying to get his client. But anything reasonable, would of course be considered.
And Realfan, are you seriously telling me that you believe that sleezy agent/lawyer Parker, over Jed,a lifetime 49ers fan ,like us and a seemingly fine man of character and straight shooter? If that is the case then I believe you have just lost all credability with every Niners fan on THIS issue.
...I will say however, that if I were Jed,I would personally contact Parker and ask for a meeting with Crabs and the agent present,so I could explain the facts of life in person to the kid. But ,he probably has tried that already and has been denied .Parker most likely wants to keep his client brainwashed and in his control ,as all agents want.
Enough already. When is someone in the front office going to show some backbone against the league regarding the possible tampering. The Niners announced no teams have contacted them regarding a possible trade for crabpuff and then Peon gets on TV blabbing about two teams and how they are willing to pay this outrageous amount of money to a unproven Diva. No wonder his stock dropped. I wonder how far he would have fallen had the Niners had not picked him at 10.
Offer him a BILLION dollars if he matches Rice's 135 catches in the first 2 years. He prolly won't have 5 in 2009.

-------------------------------------
Exactly Randy ! Every fan who has paid attention knows that even John York has always written the check for EVERY SINGLE thing that their GM's have asked them for, when it comes to getting and keeping players.(at least if you believe the words of Bill Walsh and Donahue and Nolan and now McGloughan. If you don't believe them when they said it several times, then there is no hope for you).
Since Craptree missed all of training camp and pre-season, his VALUE for this season has DECREASED. The Niners should REDUCE their contract offer to reflect this fact.
Let's just say, for the sake of speculation, that MC does hold out and ends up on a different team next year and does get his $40M. Based on current statements by Deion and others, how could it NOT be collusion and tampering? It looks to me that if he gets what he wants that it HAS to indicate tampering.
I used to think the League office had it in for the 49ers because they didn't like Eddie or thought he was Mafioso or something, now I don't know what their motivation might be. The Briggs deal was a huge over-reaction by the League, and even back when HOF Coach/GM Bill Walsh was still running things the NFL put some bogus sanction on us for a single statement Walsh made about a player; sorry, my addled brain can't recall the year or player.
Sanders' statements are only a hint, a whiff of a problem, but it would've been enough to start an investigation by the League against us. Then their proper response to Matt this morning would've been "No comment".
GUYS-There are 2 sides to every story, make that 3 sides....the 3rd being the TRUTH....FACT IS, and I'm not condoning Crabpee's actions in any way, shape, or form....BUT, we all know it takes 2....SO, CRAB CAMP (incl Deion) are IDIOTS, yes, BUT so are the stupid 49er Front Office suits! No matter what happens at this point, they have tarnished this "relationship" and are setting eveyone up for FAILURE! Say crab does sign, and has a decent 1st year (not likely) then has a "BREAKOUT" 2nd year.....What do you think he's going to do next???? ANSWER: He's going to want to renegotiate$$$$$$$$$, holdout again, and DEMAND A TRADE!!! The fact that he has Neon Deion, the flashiest/me first player to ever play the game, as his mentor should have been a MAJOR RED FLAG from the get go....I'm pissed and rambling now, peace out
Ucity: We don't know what actions the front office is taking in regards to these probably false reports about teams and the agent possibly tampering. They either are now or will investigate ,if the player does not sign soon.
Probably right now they are too busy laughing at Deion and his friend Parker for such a lame attempt to lie to everyone and TRY to put pressure on the team. But if this becomes a problem, all they need do is file a tampering charge and a charge against the agent etc ,and the League will be under obligation to investigate.
Deon let the TRUTH slip out. They are afraid Craptree will only get ONE CONTRACT. They expect him to be a BUST!!!!
PDJOHNV: But Jed has already said they will do everything in their power to make sure Crabs gets a contract that makes him happy.Jed said the last thing they want is to have a unhappy ,disgruntled player in Crabs, when he finally does sign. Jed understands completely.
Right now, there has been nothing said bad about the niners by Crabs or his agent and there has been nothing bad said by the Niners about Crabs or his agent,PERIOD ! They are not argueing or negotiating in the media (except for the lame attempts at Parker having 3rd parties spread rumors to TRY to put pressure on the Niners, but you will notice that Crabs or Parker themselves have never said anything bad about the Niners and Crabs has actually said several good things about the team before the negotiation period started).
LOL. Makes you wonder... I mean, if Crabby was secure and confident in his skills, he would follow a guy like Joe Staley's path and prove himself for his next big contract... Wonder what he's scared of?
Mister-B : What Deion was referring to was the well known fact that any player can only count on getting 1 contract and can only count on actually putting in the bank, whatever money is guaranteed from that 1st contract. BECAUSE OF POSSIBLE CAREER ENDING INJURY that might happen anytime ! Not because of whatever you were thinking.
Matt,
Is this because the league believes that was just posturing by the Crabtree camp? I can see that. However, if there is any chance that this is real, I would think that the teams that made the overtures should have some of the biggest sanctions in the History of sports.
If this is true, it could change the direction of our Franchise. We'll never sign him and essentially lose a first round pick. We've seen how long it has taken us to somewhat recover from Kwame Harris and Rashaun Woods. If there is any chance it is true, the league needs to follow up on it. I long for the days of Eddie D. I can't imagine that we would be dealing with this type of crap, but if we were, he'd force the league to deal with it.
TOP_CAT --- That's my story and I'm stickin' to it! :) . Gee, it would be a shame to have a career ending injury and walk away with only 16 million guaranteed. By my calculations, that's more than most of us will make at least two lifetimes... ya think?

...And if Crabs is so down on the Niners and is looking to sit out and already has a deal with Jerry Jones etc,all those silly senarios, then why is he still living in the South Bay Area (near the 49ers facility),thousands of miles away from his home and why is he not back home, living it up,waiting for next year, lol ?
Mister -B: I fully understand that $16-18 million guaranteed is more than most of us will ever see,BUT if your agent is and has been telling you (promising you !) for months that if you do what I say and just sit there and wait,I will still get you that top 5 money,I promise, etc.
Then why would you not wait? If Parker and Deion have him brainwashed to think he would ever get $40 million instead of 20 or 22 etc, then it seems to me that everyone in their right mind would take the $40 million. Especially if your agent tells you that you will makes millions of guaranteed dollars, just for sitting on your butt for a couple of months. (how much is that per hour ,lol ? more than we make per hour, that's for sure).
Oh well,it just business and sometimes in business you get slimey agents that must be dealt with, such is life.
Sanders as mentor. No wonder this kid is mixed up.
Crabtree has certainly chosen to surround himself with some losers.
OK,it's after 1pm,where is the list Matt ?
I don't give a damn about Crabtree. The bottom line for the Niners is that a 7-8 team from last year is going to start the season with:
Still one injury to either Staley or Snyder away from having Barry Sims at tackle. A scary prospect.
Still counting on an underachieving Manny Lawson to provide pass rush.
Still without a hard hitting safety.
A cover corner (Clements) who has been showing signs of aging over the past couple of years and who looked putrid in the pre-season.
No first or second round draft choices from the 2009 draft.
A weak armed journeyman at starting QB.
An offensive coordinator who, in a long career, has never led an offense which averaged more than 22 points per game in any season.
A head coach who has never been a coordinator either college or NFL.
I think Matt was being overly generous to the Niners when he predicted a 6-10 season a couple of posts ago. 4-12 is far more likely.
McClueless must have some great pictures on Jed to avoid being fired despite his incompetence as a NFL GM year after year.
TOP_CAT: First off, I appreciate your glass is half full perspective, and I know you are an optimistic fan like most of us are here.....but, as we all know, what we hear in the media is only partly true(if at all). Sure some reports are more fact, and some are more opinion and posturing.....I am from the media, I know how it works! Much of what we see, hear, and read is like theatrics....theatre of the mind, per say. Does Cracktree really live in South Bay? There are "reports" of it....has any one seen him? at the store, working out, running in the hills, church, movies??????? NO! Not that we can confirm. Has his neighbor came out and said hey Michael Crabtree lives next door? NO. Not that we can confirm, nor deny. Has Jed and McGM and the front office done everything in their power to make sure Crackee is not digruntled when/if he gets here??? No. not that we can confirm, nor deny.....you get the point, right? You seem like an intelligent man, but let me tell you, don't believe the hype!
Nobody REALLy knows anything right now...It is all abunch of BLAH BLAH BLAH....the proof is in the pudding, or in this case on the field. Have a great weekend everyone, I"M OUT! GO NINERS
Sounds like you need a WAAAAAAAAMbulance, LOL. Might want to wait a few regular season games into the season before declaring the season a disaster, huh Chicken Little? Or would that just be a little too much common sense?
Thanks for reminding me about that comment. What's that about????? So every kid that had a very good college career, deserves atleast one major payday from the NFL without even playing 1 game in the NFL. Just how does that work???? Since when should the NFL be "held up" so to to speak by some classless punk kid from college and his agent. If they're half as good as they think then they should be able to make it up in their 2nd contract where they would be paid according to their past NFL performance. I guess that's too much of a gamble. If they can't, then they were over paid to begin with and got away with stealing. Deion is a total idiot, and the only way I can stomach his being a Niner for a year is that he helped beat the Cowboys in the NFC championship.
Rick, rick, rick,it must be so sad being you .Cheer up buddy and at least wait until we lose a couple of games before you end it all, lol.
At least I know you are a passionate fan,but geez, don't take it so hard,it's only a game and we have not even actually lost one yet,lol
It's all making sense now. Crabtree really doesn't want to be a 49er...he wants to play for Dallas and be a cowboy instead. He has Deion running interference probably telling him how much Jerry Jones will pay him based on his own experience when playing for SF and then when he bolted to Dallas, and so Crabs is thinking how great it will be to sit and make a ton of cash from Jones. By not signing he thinks he will then make up any lost money from Jerry, plus he will be in Texas and also catching passes from Romo who is a better QB than anyone we have now. From a player perspective it probably IS better to play for Dallas than SF right now so in his mind what difference does one season make? If anyone ever hacked Crabs phone or e-mail I bet the trail will lead straight to Jerry via Deion. The 49ers and Jed McSing should start getting real worried about what the boys in Big D are up to.
PDJOHNV: First of all I will try not to hold it against you that for some reason you chose such a disreputable profession as working in or around the pathetic media.(so you see I agree with you about believing nothing you hear and only half of what you see,lol ).
But we do sometimes need to decide,by looking at past actions and character references etc on who we believe when they make a statement. I believe the Matt's when they say they believe something is true and I also will choose to believe Jed or Sing over a sleezy lawyer/agent ,who has a history of causing holdout problems .
Good post buddy !
Big J: But don't you realize that Jerry Jones would never get involved in any such thing.Even Jones knows that is not allowed and that his team would be ruined for years in the draft and possibly other sanction if he were involved in such a scheme. It would be almost as bad as Eddie getting involved in gambling and bribery, with possibly the same results for Jerra as for Eddie.
This is just a lie fromn Deion to help his friend Parker. Either Parker has lied to Deion or Deion is just shooting hot air to try to help his two friends.
People;
The issue is not Crabtree. It is the style of play ,smash mouth football sounds good but this is the NFL and this style of play will not cut it. The organization is going in the wrong direction. We are all fans who want this team to win , not just win but to be a championship team. Really, do you see this team going in that direction? Do you see this style of play being successful in the NfL? Why would a "potential" elite WR want to be here? It is our duty, as hard core fans, to connect the dots and hold responsible the front office for this train wreck. Give me a championship team!!!
Crabs would have a great career with Nate Davis throwing him TD passes ! The whole Jimmy Raye/Sing offense is based on running to set up the pass. Not just run,not even close!
There is NO trainwreck,at least not yet. WE had the best record in the NFL last year with Sing as the HC and Hill as the QB,was that a train wreck, lol.
At least wait until a game or two is lost before you kill yourself Hawaii, lol.
Well, Sanders' comments have clarified everything for me. Many very successful business negotiators use the same tactic that Sanders uses -- they could care less about the facts of the matter, they just insist and demand and cause a ruckus until the other side decides to give them what they want. I've dealt with such folks. They are completely tone deaf to everything but their own demand. You have to either give them what they want or walk away from them -- there is nothing in between. You asked whether Crabs would walk away from $16 mil? Yes. He will walk away, he will get much less when he's drafted next year, and he will declare victory when he gets his much smaller contract. To you and me that seems irrational, but not to him.
Matt: The cuts were due about an hour ago,are the Niners not telling you yet or what ? I am just sitting by this dumb computer waiting to see the cuts before my wife and I go out for the day. Go in there and put your foot down ,lol !
But Rich,Crabs agent has not said anything. He is just using Deion to put nonsense out there to worry the Niners. Or else Deion is as stupid as that Cousin ,who the agent and crabs shot down the next day ?
So far there are no facts from Crabs or his agent(the ONLY ones who matter, other than the Niners negotiators). This is certainly a negotiating ploy or just deion trying to sound important.
This means ABSOLUTLY NOTHING to Paraag or Scotty ,unless they hear it from the agent himself. We don't know what they are saying in their frequent phone conversations,so no need coming up with any more of these wild conjectures.
According to Matt's Twitter account, Sing is gonna speak in 5 minutes or so...
Now he says 20 minutes... Guess me gotta wait a little longer.
Randy: Is there a link to the live press conference ?
I don't see one anywhere. CBS5.com used to carry them last year, but I don't see them this year. Maybe because the regular season hasn't started yet?
Barrows is reporting it is a conference CALL with Sing?
Here's the list:
http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/2009/09/49ers-announce-20-cuts-to-get-to-53-man-limit.html
Bummer! Sheets was released :(
Oh well. Jason Hill stuck.
Remind me again why Jed is running the Niners?
Is it his experience, hard work & football skills? Is it his decade of practicing, training, hundreds of games played, his pain, his blood?
Anyhow, I'm liking PDJOHNV, hope he comes back.
Good god, Finley, Miller, Pascoe and Sheets all released?
Kept Briggs. I wonder if he earned his spot yesterday. He did play well.
Yeah, we seem to be very light on TE and FB. I was really hoping they would keep Sheets... Hopefully he clears waivers and winds up on our PS.
Was thinking the same thing myself, then they made those cuts... Either they're thinking the other teams will cut other players that are better than the ones they cut themselves, or the Niners are really praying nobody swoops down on those players.
WTF???
Finley, Pascoe, Miller, Boone, AND SHEEEEETS!!?
HOLY SSSHHHEEEEEETTTTTs
Realfan: Jed has been a die hard Niners fan since he was a child. He has gone to college at ND to learn and prepare to take over the team and then he worked for a law firm to get more experience for the express purpose of getting ready to do the owner/President job well. Then when he finally went to work for the Niners he worked everywhere to learn the ropes ,in the locker room,in the trainers room in the office etc etc etc.
There has never been anyone so well groomed to take over an NFL team as Jed.And the best part is that he wants to win at any cost and is not just a "business man" but is a die hard fan like us(only richer, lol). And another thing that even you should agree with is that he is NOT his father and that is a good thing.
Other than Sheets the other guys were not essential to the 53 man roster. We have 2 FBs. One or both of the TEs will clear waivers and make it to the practice squad. The team has been wanting to get both Walker and Davis on the field at the same time, which make sense so that teams won't name if we will pass or run.
I said last week that these cuts were going to be the most painfull in years, since the roster is sooo much better now then we are used to. But Sheets AND Boone AND Miller ,ouch.
Heeeeres JOHNNY! Thanks buddy....in response to the JED question, IMO, he's running the the Niners bcuz:
1) He is one lucky SOB
2) He is well spoken, believable, and likeable
3) He is young and has the energy and passion to
What he needs to do to have continued success is to surround himself with PROVEN SUCCESSFUL NFL SUITS!
-nuff said, I'm OUUUT---Godspeed
I've been ageeing with your post today. Wow. I do agree on your synopsis of Jed. He has made decisive moves since taking over. Firing Nolan mid-season, installing Singletary and showing commitment to the team.
I am glad they didn't keep either of the two young TE's,they needed the D line (Francois and Briggs was a good keep.
Sheets- man I think this is an error, he most likely won't clear waivers...I'm presuming they are gambling that JJ or Bear will clear, hmm-Spanos and Boone-would have liked to see Sims on this list instead.
I am hoping that Miller and sheets and Spanos and Boone make the PS .
Overall I think they did the right thing, although I still think Roman and sims are wasted roster spots, but I understand why they were kept, for now.
The pigs at NFL should be ashamed of themselves. They have no balls to standup to buillies like Jeery Jones. Roger Goodall is nothing but a putter in the hands of Jeery Jones.
Sheets,Miller,Boone,Spanos and maybe one or two more...I hope they make it through to the PS.
And remember, this is not the final roster,it will change in the next day or so if the Niners pick up any cut players from waivers(or if they make a trade for a vet RT). And if and when Crabs signs, lol.
Is this in regards to my comment on kids demanding a large NFL payday for having a good college career with no pro experience? Jed's running the Niners for the same reason his uncle Eddie D did. The DeBartolo family spent a large amount of money back in 79 to buy the Niners franchise. Since the DeBartolos OWN the franchise, they could make their their family cat the team president. Bottomline is they have a large investment in the team of time and money. The value of team(their investment) goes up or down based on how well the ownership performs. Now you tell me what has Crabtree invested in this team where he deserves such a high return on investment: zip - nada- zilch. Your comments can be so far out there. I also think you sound angry or jealous because you weren't as fortunate as Jed as to being born into wealth.
The kid seems to have his head screwed on straight from what I've seen plus he's grown up around the organization.
From Realfan49: ""He's better off sticking with his ivy league buddies instead of playing at team president""
York went to Notre Dame - thats not an ivy league school. Also its Joe Montana's alma mater. No 49er fan should hate on ND.
If York gave Crabs what he wanted, he would be setting new precedence including:
1) Contracts are based on mock drafts and not real drafts.
2) Agents tell owners what to do and the owners humbly obey.
3) Crabtree is the most important player on the entire roster.
Is this really what you want?
Why doesnt Crabtree just ask for "One hundred million-billion" dollars? Or a Trillion dollars? He might as well. Because anything beyond what SF has offered him sounds like that.
Better yet, why not just give him the entire team budget and just let Crabs run around out there by himself? Sound good?

Jed should sit down with this kid and his agent, and tell him we are not budging. If you sign now there will be incentives, if you continue to hold out the price drops every week you sit. That will see if this kid is really going to sit out. The niners have nothing to lose with him at this point.
Crabtree and his friends are a bunch of 'smokers. The sad truth is that once this d-bag signs, fans will want him to do well, and will eventually love him if he becomes a special player. While I'd like the team to improve, I'd also like to see #15 get lit up badly by angry DBs.
Again, Crabtree will be a Cowboy in 2010 with a ridiculous contract.
It's probably too late for anyone to still be reading this segment, but.....
As I've been saying since this problem started, the 49ers were lucky to get Crabtree in the draft, but he wasn't what they needed from this draft ( one look at the pre-season will illustrate how many other holes they have in this roster). He should have been trade-bait from the get-go. Granted, the 49er "brain-trust" probably felt he was too much a media star to give up ( BUTTS IN SEATS/IT'S A BUSINESS), but could any of you imagine a seasoned, experienced owner and gm getting themselves into this mess? Think about it. New England? No way. Pittsburgh? No way. The 49ers under Eddie and Bill Walsh? No way.
The only way this team will really turn around is when we have a real GM, and that call is up to Jed. And while I'm at it, I can't wait for the new GM to bring in a new head coach and new coordinators.
"Sanders spoke several times with 49ers coach Mike Singletary prior to the draft to vouch for Crabtree's character."
Almost fell out of my chair reading that gem. You've got to be kidding me. Ehem, Coach Singletary? It's Deion on line 1 for you to vouch for Crabtree's character. Well put that class act on the phone right now!
If ifs and buts were candies and nuts, we'd all have a merry christmas – BUT – methinks the niners should have taken that superfreak Maybin at 10.
We better get it right next year with our two first rounders.
Deion needs to butt out...the only reason he's mouthing off is because Parker was his agent and he's friends w/Crabtree. Niners need to continue to stand pat. They've made EC a fair offer...if he chooses to hold out, it's his loss, and his agent's. That's why Deion is piping up now...but he needs to shut his trap and let it be.
If Holmgren would return to be our GM, I'm down with that. He's got what we need.
Wow! The fact that Maiocco even took the time to write about the NFL's interest in pursuing a tampering investigation indicates that even the media suspects something fishy!
Jed York needs to turn into a pitbull and demand an investigation! Why is it that tbe NFL swiftly held the 49ers accountable for tampering with Lance Briggs and yet now they are turning their cheek when one of their very own employees (Deion) reports that 2 other teams TAMPERED with Crabtree??? This is maddening! The NFL has an OBLIGATION to look into this matter and ensure fairness!
Matt, if the fans wanted to voice their discontent with this decision, what could they do to bend some ears?
Hey Prime Time,
Zip it buddy, the NFL has a slotted system, meaning where your drafted detrmines what you get. As far as the snide remark about the QB sitaution, it is what it is. Crabtree sign and show us what your made of, otherwise, I would not be disappointed if this guy didnt sign, who needs this guys on our team anyway!
JUST ONE THING...why have we not said anything about this???!!!! we got screwed out of a 3rd pick last draft from the BEARS because f tampering...this I just had to copy from Mr. K Lynch's blog:
Conspicuous by the its absence is the silence concerning talks with Michael Crabtree. Someone sent me a link to a story Mike Florio wrote on ProFootballTalk.com about Deion Sanders commenting on the Crabtree situation. Here it is:
NINERS SHOULD INSIST ON TAMPERING INVESTIGATION
Last year, the San Francisco 49ers received a knuckle-rapping from the league office based on communications with agent Drew Rosenhaus regarding a contract extension for linebacker Lance Briggs, at a time when the Bears and 49ers were engaged in trade discussions regarding the franchise player who was playing under a one-year contract that by rule couldn't have been extended until after the season ended.
The Niners had every right to believe that they were screwed. Tampering runs rampant in the NFL, usually without consequence. By periodically busting one of the 32 teams for it, however, the league office can create the appearance that it cares about the pervasive problem of off-field cheating via franchises putting visions of signing bonuses in the heads of players not happy with their current contracts and, as a result, their current teams. And now the Niners apparently are the victims of tampering.
Deion Sanders of NFL Network proclaimed during a Friday night on-air segment with Rich Eisen that two teams were interested in trading for the rights to 49ers wideout Michael Crabtree -- and were willing to pay the holdout wideout a contract worth $40 million.
Specifically, Sanders said that the unnamed teams "will pay this kid, and he knows that. " The 49ers responded, according to Daniel Brown of the San Jose Mercury News, with an unequivocal denial: "Those discussions never occurred." So if the 49ers didn't talk with teams interested in trading for Crabtree, there's only one way that Crabtree became aware of the situation: The teams talked directly to Crabtree or his agent about their willingness to trade for, and then to pay, Crabtree.
The problem is that neither the Niners nor the league know who the teams are.
But Deion does. And he's an employee of the league.
So the approach here is simple. The 49ers should demand that Commissioner Roger Goodell demand that Deion spill his guts about the teams that supposedly were willing to do a trade-and-pay deal for Crabtree. If Deion declines, then Deion moves on to the pursuit of other interests.
The Niners also should express concern to the league regarding whether a business relationship exists between Sanders and Parker. Though there's presently no evidence that they are anything other than agent and former client, the NFL should want to know whether Deion was merely expressing his views when he talked about the Crabtree situation on Total Access, or whether Deion was carrying water for Parker and, in turn, for Crabtree.
If it's the latter, it's a pretty good arrangement for Parker. He can continue to keep his head low and his mouth closed about the Crabtree negotiations, and Parker can rely upon others, like Deion, to get the word out.
Bottom line? The 49ers should be livid about this situation. If they're not, then they need to get out of the football business and open a chain of flower shops, or something.
