Pashos agrees to 1-year deal with 49ers
Tony Pashos, who started 47 games at right tackle the past three seasons, has agreed to a one-year contract with the 49ers. He is in the Bay Area taking a physical and will sign later today, said a source close to Pashos.
The 49ers must make room on the 53-man roster for Pashos, whom the Jaguars released this weekend. The 49ers figure to waive a player with practice-squad eligibility, as they have one open spot on the practice squad.
Pashos (6-6, 326) is a seventh-year player who broke into the league with the Baltimore Ravens as a fifth-round draft choice from Illinois. It should not take Pashos long to acclimate to the 49ers' blocking schemes, as he played two seasons under 49ers offensive-line coach Chris Foerster while with the Ravens.
Pashos, 29, signed a reported five-year, $24 million contract with the Jaguars in 2007 as an unrestricted free agent. In two seasons with the Jaguars, Pashos missed one game. He played every snap of last season at right tackle. The Jaguars released Pashos on Saturday, rather than pay is $4.335 million salary.
The 49ers anticipated Pashos' release and scouted him Thursday night against the Redskins. Pashos started at right guard and played the entire first half. But the 49ers envision Pashos as a right tackle.
Adam Snyder is the 49ers' starting right tackle, but Pashos provides insurance at the position. Barry Sims was the only backup tackle behind Snyder and left tackle Joe Staley on the 49ers' original 53-man roster.

This is great news as far as depth we needed. Following some of the discussions from yesterday, I insist we have a better roster than last year and now we seem to have strategy and direction on top of that. I expect a better 2009!
Good news, I like that our brass acts decisevely. Pashos will be good to our depth and has durability.
I agree with Monterrey Niner, we have a much improved roster and 09 will be a whole lot better. 21-17 over the cards on sunday.
Hopefully it's Briggs to the PS.
Barry Sims,
Don't let the door hit your behind on the way out. Maybe you can get a job with the Raiders.
-- Management
On another note, what's the world coming too when the fans get excited about the signing of a backup tackle?
I was thinking Sims would get cut, not a PS player.
Excellent! Sims has got to be the odd man out. Hasta La Bye Bye!!
Hmmmm. Matt says that the 49ers envision Pashos as a Right Tackle. Does this mean that they don't think he can play the left side? This gives us nine OL's if they don't waive one of them; some people would say that's too many.
what a great signing! the man is durable and a proven player. great mover niners! i know shaun hill will appreciate this as all niner fans that has been following them religiously. GO NINERS!!!
I would like it to be Sims, but according to Matt is going to be someone with PS eligibility. So Briggs seems the likely choice here and not RJF.
Guys, Barry Sims isn't going ANYWHERE ... he was the only backup tackle before Pashos was signed. The Niners will carry TWO backup tackles into the regular season.
This is a nice move that addresses what could have been a serious issue. After Jennings and Marvel Smith, it's great to know this guy started 47 games the last 3 seasons.
This sends the right message that the team will make the moves it needs to. I also like the versatility of G/T.
Briggs is probably enough under the radar to clear waivers and make it to PS, but he's also might be the only edge speed rusher other than Parys H.
i believe RJF has PS eligibility as well he is only a rookie (i just hope they cut sims even tho im sure there is a reason there are only 7 PS players)....
well this is def good news after what i thought was a fairly sad day on sat. Im still in shock that sheets was cut. i know he is on the PS but what good does that do us. I just dont understand, we are suppose to be a running team! i see Gore, coffee, sheets as like a 2 seam 4 seam change up combo that wld just light teams up. i am fully aware that they want gore to have alot of touches and coffee to spell him but why not have a 3rd option for screens, sweeps, a possible home run hitter? Instead we keep Micheal "taser" Spurlock.
Now with that being said i assume and hope cuz we kept Spurlock we are just waiting for Crabtree to sign and we dont end up cutting hill.
I think you are absolutely right... 2 back-up tackles and only 1 will be active on game days... My Guess is Pashos becuase they can always slide Snyder over to LT if needed...
I just hope syder continues to get his chance to shine. i love the depth but if synder is playing good ball keep him in there!!
Funniest 49ers blog is back up. Vanilla Ice Cream with Mike Nolan, www.vicwmn.com.
True. I was saying that I think Briggs would make it thru waivers and RJF most likely wouldn't. I agree with the other statement you made. If Sheets practice KR during this season, he'll replace Rossum next year and be available as the change of pace back on game day.
Good job, McCloughan :-) Nice to see we now have quality tackle depth.
Barry Sims is the backup LT until we can find another.
Singletary promised Snyder he'll keep him at one position this year. Pashos has been a career RT, going back to his entire college career at Illinois.
Great move. Not only do we get a competent RT to replace Marvel Smith, we also prevent Seattle from having him. I'd rather have done what the Jags did: draft Eben Britton, but they snatched him before our pick came up. Maybe when we grow up, we can draft a tackle of our very own!
Didn't the Niners get Simms from the Raiders? Why'd they want him back?
THis is a great signing. Barry Simms has been the weak link on the OL, making way too many mistakes for a vet. Pashos will be a great addition to the team. I think that releasing Sims, trading Alex with Crabtree for an impact DL guy would be the only missing link left.
Very good news. I was afraid the Seahawks had more appeal to him, because if our recent record. Finally we got a RT that is not injury-plagued like Jennings and M.Smith. If Snyder can hold him off for long will be interesting.
Now it is time for Crabtree to sign and we are complete.
Agreed, great signing to fill an obviously thin position....But, aren't you guys tired of watching our team combing through the waiver wire to fill such an important role on the team?? My guess is that Pashos will move into the starting line up before too long, but what does that tell you about the 49ers brass? We might as well play Russian Roulette with our QB's....It's gonna be their ass on the line, or in this case on the ground....This is no way to build a franchise.
Any news on Crackee? I bet he's staying in "great shape" working out at Jerry Jones' $50 Billion facility.....BUM
BTW, check this link out to BEE-ROWS season predictions...

Not one of them went with our beloved 49ers as a playoff team.....What happenned to FAITHFUL???
I think we ALL owe them a good Labor Day beat down!! LOL!
This signing is a nice move by the 9ers.
My 2 cents on the Craptree front: Pocket the money it would take to sign him and go after a proven player free agent next off season at any of the need positions. Of the WRs drafted in the top 10 spots in the last 6 years it looks like the bust factor is about 70%. I have a bad feeling about this primadona, that he is another bust. More interested in celebrity than football. For the 16 million guaranteed and total contract we are offering we could get a pretty darn good OL, pass rusher, etc.
Great! We got us a Kwame Harris replacement! Woohoo, superbowl here we come... ;)
MM...pretty close to the season opener and still no Crabtree. Do you think he would be willing to sit out a few games and eventually sign? Or would not signing by the first game be more indicative that he is willing to sit out the entire season?
I have a very bad feeling about the Crabtree tampering situation. No wonder he hasn't sighed, he's having the carrot dangled. That and the fact that his IQ most be below 80 (not flash 80), he has terrible advisors, bad judgement and a rediculously inflated sense of value. 49ers need to get Dieion into the interrogation room and stir up some serious sh@@! We are being disrespected and it's going to coat us. UNLESS! This is a smokescreen for a foot that is more badly broken than previously suspected. Can anyone say,' Garrison Hearst bone necrosis?'. Maybe he's hurt And they're protecting him.
How about that Andre smith holdout. Was he already hurt? Never know. I hope Crabs comes to his senses. Once he gets into camp and that he is a man if integrity. Once he gets into camp he belongs to Mike and I don't think there will be a lot of sympathy for the ballerina.
Pashos = OK pickup for a good team, great pickup for a rebuilding team.
I think Crabs is healthy, the team was paying attention to his recovery when he was around the facility this spring and should have known if something was wrong. It all comes down to the money, pretty sad in my opinion.
Great signing!! I believe Pashos will be starting by mid season!! He's a monster!
I think Curtis Taylor will be cut to the practice squad.
I agree...I think he's the only rookie on the current roster that wouldn't get picked up by another team. Not to mention, 5 safties is a lot.
Pathos:
Assets: Huge, physical blocker with a long wingspan. Aggressive, intense player who also makes good decisions. Gets a good pop and drive when run blocking. Plays with good leverage.
Flaws: Not a super athlete. Not quick out of his stance. Has slow feet, and footwork and technique needs refining.
Matt do you have any access to the statistical likelihood a player on the practice squad does develop into a starter?
Seems to me we get excited every year about that squad and most never develop as the names drop off from year to year. IMHO they exist for practice and if they really did have major potential they are on the 53 man team.
Briggs was waived according to Niner web site.
Agreed 5 safties is a lot. Lets part company with Mark Roman, no future there.
Niners waived Diryal Briggs
LOL.... vicwmn.com It does have some good ones thats for sure.....
"Scot McCloughan and Paraag Marathe decided this week to stop using an important player evaluation tool for the 2009 draft. When asked why Scot responded "...well, we realized that everyone was scoring 100% and they still turned out to be $hitty draft picks..."."
Pashos is a great sign We got the BPA for our most pressing need. When we get Sheets in on some imaginative plays and Brandon Jones returns, this will definitely be a better team than last year.Snyder can be a monster too if allowed to play his natural position and not jockeyed all over the line because he's versatile.
Excellent signing. Tip of the cap to Mac and the front office. With Snyder and now Pashos, we're in great shape at OT. I'd like someone better than Sims to b/u Staley, but he'll have to do for now.
As usual,Scott McGloughan is right on top of things and doing a masterful job ! He has a quick trigger finger,so we don't lose out on ANY player in free agency that he targets !
With him and Jed and sing, the future has not looked this bright since Walsh and Eddie were running the show.
But I see that there are still whiners lurking, that are never happy,no matter what is the reality.
We switch from John york to Jed(A clone hybrid of Eddie and Carman) ,we swith from the Disasters Donahue and Nolan to Scotty(A GM that Parcells and Holmgren and Ron wolfe call an up and coming star executive in the NFL),and we ship out Erickson and then nolan and sign a winning HC who is a Hall of famer ,who the players all love and respect.
And yet, some fans feel more at home being FortyWhiners instead of just being happy and watching their team develop .
Get over it guys ! If we actually start to win on a consistant basis,Scotty is never going anywhere, unless Parcells hires him away from us like he tried to do before. But Jed won't let that happen !
GO NINERS ! (and stop whining, the sky is NOT falling chicken little ,as a matter of fact the sky looks blue and bright).
Hope Bryggs is not claimed and makes practice squad. If we were strong and deep at that position it would not matter but still plenty of rebuilding to do. Remember when York got drunk and fired Mooch after a 12-4 season going 2 deep into the playoffs? Blew off a franchise Qb who had gone to 3 pro bowls?
Agree, great signing.
When a player is released I always wonder why his previous team did not want him. In this case, there is no doubt that Pashos was released because of $$$$ rather than playing ability. There has been recent news about Jacksonville's poor ticket sales. They are anticipating black-outs. Clearly the only reason they released him was because they did not want to pay his 2009 salary. Kudos to McCloughan and company for pouncing on this guy.
And I bet that if Staley were to go down, that snyder might move to LT and Pashos would play RT.
Sims is still a poor player and it would be even worse for him to play LT than RT,which is bad enough.
We have Sims and Roman still needed for depth but next draft we have 2 #1's and then there is free agency . So ,it looks like by this time next year ,nearly all the pieces should be in place. Maybe they won't all be experienced and ready to contribute at their maximum, but the pieces will be there.
It is going to be fun watching this young team grow together into what could be sonmething special !
Montana: Buddy ? York did not get drunk and fire Mooch,Mooch and his agent had been insubordinate once too often and York finally blew his top and fired Mooch,as he deservrd.
Mooch wanted more power in the organization and had been in a battle with Walsh and then donahue(Walsh's chosen one) for years. York and the GM's had finally laid down the law to Mooch after he kept trying to pressure York into giving him power over player personnel etc,by threatening to take jobs in college or with other NFL teams etc.York and Walsh and Donahue were fed up with Mooch's agent always riding them about getting more power in the org for his client, even trying to blackmail them with threats ,and even runors of interviews with other teams, that were not denied.
Mooch and his agent were told that the structure of the front office was going to remain the same as Walsh had set it up ,period. Then when York met again with Mooch's agent ,the agent went at york once again about Mooch needing to be given more power. Then more rumors about Mooch being sought after by other teams in college and the NFL etc etc \. York then blew his top,as we all would, and fired the guy.
York should have waited until he had a replacement in hand, that was Yorks only mistake.
8 and 8.....Seems like a good bet! Davis will start after mid season!
Briggs is raw but he has the talent to get to the QB,and on this team that is rare. Like Sheets and Boone,Miller,Mitchell,I think Briggs will benifit from schooling on the PS !
I hope he clears waivers.
He was injured in that last preseason game,so maybe teams will shy away, since they probably couldn't even use him on ST's right away?
When we have the first winning season in seven years I will pass out the deserved praises, but not before. Every year I hear the same old rah rah. "Rolling with Nolan" was the last one.
You call it whining I call it valid opinions based on the reality of the record. We all want the Niners to win or we wouldn't comment, except for the few Raiders fans who escape from the wards.
Terry: I think that if we wind up 8-8 that we will be too close to making the playoffs to put the rookie in. If we start out really poorly and at midseason we are something like 1-7 or 2-6,then maybe they give the rest of the season over to Davis?
Either way,it seems obvious(and has to me for a long time) that Davis is the probable future. But I hope we are doing very well with Hill and we can wait until next year to have a real QB competition in camp between Hill and davis. But you may be right. It might actually be a blessing in disguise,if we had a horrible start and Davis gets in and gets a head start in his schooling and experience . But I would rather win now AND win later, lol
Matt, the player being cut to make room for Pashos has to clear waivers before he gets to the PS? I thought he could go directly to the PS without a chance to be claimed unless they take him to the other's team 53 roster as any other PS player?
The only day to claim for players before they could get to the PS was Saturday wasn't it?
Thanks!
Davis is the future. My #7 jersey is on order.
Hey Matt......In all honesty is this Crabtree thing really over money or does he just not want to be a 49er..Has our franchise really sunken that low?Im starting to beleive he just doesnt want to be a niner.
RE: Mooch, We can now see that history proved Mooch to be a much better self promoter than head football coach.
Monterey: All players must be put on waivers and exposed to all the other 31 teams before a team can sign him to their PS.
What I am wondering about is if a player has the right AFTER passing through waivers to sign with any team and then going on that teams PS. I think they can.I think they are free agents if they pass through waivers.Of course ,if they get claimed,I think they are the property of the team that claims them. But that is ok because that means they just made a 53 man roster in the NFL !
But I think that ,for instance,a player is from New york and was drafted by SF,and SF put him on waivers, hoping to sign him the next day to the SF practice squad, that the player could sign with any team's practice squad that wanted him (NY,ast coast etc OR SF if he wanted to stay where he had his camp etc).
Matt,
WR seem to be a different type of player. And by different I mean weird. They sure do think the game is centered around them. If I was a player I would hang out with the Offense Line men. or the RB's but def not the WR. Who would you hang out with if you could? And do you feel the WR are a bit odd to you too?
-anthony
ps if you see crabloser tell him to go back to texas we dont want him here anymore
You're not referring to Garcia as a franchise are you? Garcia is what Walsh said he was , a very good backup, too small to take the punishment a starting QB takes in a season. He needs to be 100% to be effective, proven by the number of teams he ended up playing for. If he was a franchise QB, you think he would've stuck with one of those teams wouldn't you?
Also, in conjunction with what Top_Cat said , Mooch was also canned because he sat on the ball in the last couple minutes of the first half in the playoff game against Tampa Bay. They were moving the ball and finally had decent field position but Mooch decided to kill the clock with about a minute and a half left in the half so they could go in and regroup. What a great coaching move that was. He wasn't much better as a head coach than Erikson, he just had alot more talented players.
Shocker of the day - Spencer named starting QB opposite Clements. Who would've thought?
Oops, meant CB :-)
This was a great signing. I am hopeful that Diryal Briggs makes it through waivers and onto our practice squad. He has displayed some skills but clearly needs to gain some muscle and weight to make it in the NFL. I think the Niners played this one well by not exposing him to the first round of waivers and waiting until most teams are set. The risk with a forth sting running back is much lower since every team has these guys, but a potential pass rusher might be more tempting for a team with limited LB debth. Good to wait unil the first rush of waiver claims are in.
I think 8 and 8 would be a good outcome from the 49ers team this year.
I think Davis could be starting by mid season even though they'll be taking their time with him. He makes all the throws and just needs to be a little quicker with his feet. But that will come when he's used to the speed of the game and gets over his rookie tentativness.
Running game should be better than last year, but OL's pass protection is big question mark. When teams see that running is a 49er priority and the QB and pass protection look like a Chinese fire drill, they'll force the pass.
Defense...get ready for the opponents QB to stand back in the pocket for as long as he wants most of the time and receivers will break open. The rest can be imagined! I guess the coaches have been calling it "vanilla!" I hate vanilla!
i just read that spencer was our starting right CB this year.....
if thats right what the F are we doing!!!??
Shane0: We are doing whatever is best to win games,of course ! We don't know enough of the inside info to know who is playing the best and who should get what job, etc.
We need to trust the coaches.
Anyone have a link to the rumor that Spencer has won the starting job?
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/09/06/niners-should-insist-on-tampering-investigation/
Cal: I am sure the team is angry but they are probably also laughing at the transparent and desperate move by Parker to have his friend Deion tell lies on the NFL Network.
If they are not lies ,you and I know that the Niners will be persuing the truth. The best thing would be to do as the article says, put the pressure on Deion to talk. That might force Parker to finally give in to stop the investigation.Perhaps Scotty is on the phone today with Parker, threatening to force an investigation IF Crabs doesn't sign soon ? Hope so !
All the cards are being held by the Niners in every facet of this negotiation. Nothing good can come out of this going on any further for Crabs or Parker BUT possibly really bad things could happen to Parker,if he is found to be involved in tampering.
Twist the arm a bit Scotty !
Great. Now if we could only fix that pesky quarterback problem.
If you think Nate Davis is the guy, you have low expectations for who you want leading our team.
The kid has SOME potential, but I don't think he's anything special. If he plays really well and learns how to run the team, he MIGHT be able to start until we find the right guy.
We are Niner fans, so we are definitely NOT satisfied with who we have at QB right now, right?
Since-81: If you think Davis only has "some" potential, then I suggest that it is you who should reevaluate your beliefs.
Davis has it all.Wheather or not he reaches his great potential in the NFL is still to be seen. But he is a potential Franchise stud QB,period.
And Hill is very satisfactory for the present.
Remember that hill has a 90.5 QB rating(about 30 points higher than alex), and had the #1 best winning percentage of any QB in the NFC last season during the time Hill was starter.
Hill's QB rating was better than several of what we consider the top QB's in all of football ! He will do until Davis is ready. Then if Davis does not turn out(as you think) we can go out and get another QB. Right now Davis is on track to be the stud !
twitter.com/mattmaiocco
Nate has it all? Why? Because he put together a couple of average drives against 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stringers in meaningless preseason games? He looks OK. I hope he ends up being better than I think, but we need a GREAT QB if we want to be great again. I don't see Davis as ever being a great QB.
And Shaun Hill is ok. Probably one of the best #2 QBs in the NFL. But he is NOT a legitimate starter for any type of real playoff contender. I like Shaun, and I want to see him do well, but the fact is he has NO arm and can't even pretend to throw deep. That is going to haunt us against a real defense, since they know they won't really have to worry about the deep threat. He holds onto the ball too long and takes too many sacks to.
He might get us to the playoffs, maybe even win us a game, but great teams get great play out of their qb, and I don't see Shaun ever playing "great".
So,is Brown the nickle back or is Bly ? There was so much praise of Brown during preseason that I thought it was going to be Brown.
Spencer? Really? I'm pretty surprised at that information. Nate Clements and Shawntee Spencer?
Anybody else worried now? Clements did not play well at all in the preseason and looks like he lost a step.
And Shawntee Spencer is........Shawntee Spencer.
I have to come down on the side of the pro-Nate Davis group. He is clearly not ready for the NFL right now but he did show five or six attributes quite clearly that should lead us to believe he has some serious potential. 1) He can make the serious NFL throws, including from the right hash mark to the left sideline that travels around 40 yards in the air. Many NFL QB's can't make this throw including our two other QB's. 2) He seems to be able to find open receivers, even when he is under pressure. 3) He is calm when the game gets stressful, as demontrated by his 2-minute offense in two games. 4) He seems comfortable in the pocket yet can move with subtle moves to get free from defenders to make a throw. and 5) He seems to be able to assert his leadership in the huddle as per the story of telling the team not to settle for a FG on the last drive when Sheets ran for 6 yards and a TD.
Finally, if he didn't show some serious potential it is more likely that the Niners would have Huard on the team right now and would have risked Nate to the waiver wire. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Niner Brass wasn't much more enthused about his potential than they are letting on right now.
Maybe they moved Brown to backup Clements,in case he is really losing it? Is Brown the nickle back? It seems he has earned playing time.I guess Bly didn't impress on a consistent enough basis?
Hey Since-81, Davis played against the defense he was put in against. It doesn't matter if they were 1st stringers or 5th stringers. We can still see ...
how he moves, his arm strength, his field vision , his touch on the ball when he needs it and his cannon throws when he needs that, his calmness, his strength to stand in the pocket and deliever the ball on time and on target.
What do you want man ? He is raw ,and yet we see things in him already that usually take a long time to develop. He is way ahead of schedule and that schedule already had him penciled in as the future starter. Right about now the staff is getting out the ink pen to ink him in as the future starter. He is a project but now, after what he has shown,he is THE project !!!
Boooooo !!! . . . Sorry, couldn't help myself.
Didn't the real LeMaster even have a uniform made up that had "BOO" on the back instead of his name ? lol
Yes he did, for at least one game.
We're going to need all 4; Clements-Spencer-Bly+Brown this year. I think we'll be at least adequate against the run, so what would you do to gameplan against us? Many will send out 4 WRs to spread us out, at least until we start abusing their passer.
Not that I'm not also surprised, I am. Are they maybe looking at Spencer's height to match up vs Boldin & Fitz in Game#1?
Mooch? The way I remember it, he over-played his hand with his employer and it backfired on him.
Are you listening (reading this) Mr. Crabtree?
Click on my avatar to see the BOO jersey LOL He went from a fan whipping boy to a fan favorite overnight!
Yeah, i hear you guys. I didn't mean to sound like I was speaking badly about the kid or anything. I do see a lot of the same things you guys mentioned regarding his arm strength, pocket presence, and leadership. He does have a ton of upside, and has definitely performed a hell of a lot better than anyone thought he would at this point.
I just want us to snag a GREAT QB somehow. I see the Pats, and the Colts and maybe the Steelers and I just think how much easier it would be to succeed with a top-notch QB. I sometimes wonder if Derek Anderson would be a good fit here? Assuming he loses the "battle" to Brady Quinn. I'd take either of those guys actually.
Like Coach Singletary, I want winners!
But 81 : The point we are trying to make is that he may very well be GREAT ! Maybe as good or better than those guys you mentioned. We will see,but the potential is there.
And he may be in the league with the QB's of those great teams you mentioned.
I would not trade Davis for D. Anderson, would you ?
And 81,If you want winners you want Davis who did almost nothing but win at Bal State. And how has Cleveland done with Anderson ,lol?
Hey Matt.
What are your perdictions for the opener. Can the Niners win. I think we will win 24 to 21. What is your perdictions. Step out on the limb.
God Bless
Hmmm.... Nate Davis for Derek Anderson? I'm not sure I wouldn't make that trade. I guess I'd have to think about it.
The Browns are garbage, no matter who their QB is, and his numbers fell off when all his receivers started dropping balls left and right. He looked really good in 07. A pro-bowler. He has a strong arm to and can make all the throws. I might make that trade. Not sure though.
How much somebody won in college means nothing, or else Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Chris Weinke, Cade McNown, and LOL- Jamarcus Russell etc. etc. would all be winners in the NFL. And they aren't, they are all losers. Especially Jamarcus. God, he's terrible. Alex Smith was a 10X better #1 pick than Russell. That guy is a complete moron. lol
81: Thik also about this. You don't draft "GREAT" a player becomes great later.
Tom Brady and yes even Joe Montana did not show their greatness until about their 3rd year. It took even more than that before they both were considered great rather than good.
Brady was considered just serviceable at first, and then, a benefactor of the tuck prior to the tuck rule. That is until he continued to show it wasn't a fluke later on by consistently performing to high standards.
Montana was decent and really did not SHINE until around 1983.
So to say Davis isn't now, nor ever will be great is premature.
Even though I love nate's play so far it would not be smart for the organization to put all their eggs into 1 basket right now either. They still need to look for a franchise QB outside of what they have currently. Now Nate may become that Franchise guy but what would it hurt to be in a position where you have two franchise potential QB's on the roster. If you are unsure then ask the 9ers of the late 80's how much it hurt to have two. :)
I view it like this. We have so many areas that need improvement that now with nate's potential we should consider targeting another QB later in the rounds rather than with either of our #1's next year. Use those picks for more pressing needs and go after a vet in FA to play ahead of or mentor Davis with a headset next year.
Don't forget Hill is gonna be gone next year. I believe this is the final year of his current contract and I dont see him back next year unless he does something "Great" this year.
Correction: I think Hill has 1 more year after this one.
Well put. I agree.
Keep Nate, hope he is the franchise QB, but in the meantime continue to scout kids in college and other young QBs on rosters around the league.
Like you said, it won't hurt to have two of them.
Who knows, maybe Hill is just one of those Jeff Garcia type of cats, who doesn't look pretty but keeps winning. I mean, he is 7-3 over his first 10 NFL starts. And it's not like he's been playing for a good team. lol
And 81: One thing to be advised of,Ball State did not just win, they won because Davis carried them on his shoulders and dragged them into the winners circle. HE is a winner,he didn't just play for a winnibg team.
Brekkon: As you know I am and have been the #1 Nate Davis fan since before the draft( I often say that I not only drive the bandwagon but I built the bandwagon, lol). Even I have stated that it would be wise to draft another project QB in the late rounds again next year. It's only smart.(especially since Smith can never be that guy)
I am just opposed to using one or possibly needing to use both #1 picks next year to move up and grab one of the so called stud QB's coming out next year, when we already have our own stud that has all the tools to be a star.
To trade ANYBODY, especially Davis, for those two peas in a pod has got to be joke! Anderson and Quinn are pathetic. They each take their turn starting games then begin fumblin', stumblin' and throwing INT's in the game. The only reason the Browns are sticking with Quinn is because the kid was supposed to be the poster boy for the team when they drafted him! The only thing he ended up posing for was sports magazines that showed he had a good build! Watching him play shows he has little upstairs of NFL value! He's just another over blown Notre Dame product.
The Browns are afraid to get rid of Anderson because Quinn is turning out so pathetic. But "pathetic" is how you spell Anderson's name. Don't have enough room to tell about his failures. All he's known for is he's 6' 6". And I know Browns fans (if there are any left) only see a front office that is a joke!
Davis STAYS here unless our front office is worse than the Brown's!
Derek Anderson threw for almost 3,900 yards and 29 TDs in 2007. Not a great comp. %, admittedly. He has one of the stronger arms in the NFL, and can make any throw. And he's actually done this in real live NFL games. And it's not like he's surrounded by talent.
I hope Nate Davis ends up being a freakin' Hall of Famer, I'm just saying he hasn't done anything yet. A lot of guys have shown unbelievable talent and promise in their first few preseason games and then ended up being complete busts. So, no matter what, it's way too early to tell.
But I think Derek Anderson is a better option at QB right NOW than anyone we have on our roster.
That said, I like Shaun Hill for what he can do, and I STILL believe Alex Smith has potential to be a winning QB if he ever gets some consistent reps under a stable o.c./system. Alex showed a lot of promise in 2006. Still though, neither Shaun nor Alex can throw the ball deep particularly well. Alex has a better arm, but it's not great.
Derek Anderson can throw the ball down the field much better than either of them.
Sorry guys, I think we have a few other areas that really concern me.
I really did not like our return or coverage teams in the preseason. We very seldom returned any kickoffs past the 20 in the preseason. Our coverage team gave up several nice kickoff returns against dallas and San Diego.
Special teams gets overlooked often by fans. I'm genuinely concerned about ours.
Our pass blocking frightens the hell out of me. If we don't stop the other team from killing Shaun Hill, we may see Nate Davis a lot sooner than we want to!
I think the special teams issues are reflective of the new wedge rules. Our team will adjust as we go along.
Top Cat - Exactly dont waste either #1 next year on a QB draft pick if there is a better option in an area of need. (very doubtful there wont be something of need next year when its our turn btw) However if nothing worth while is on the board in an area we need and one of those QB's is there then why not.
81: Don't forget the cakewalk schedule Anderson had in 2007.
Anderson racked up his yards against teams that were lousy. Including our 07 team. They only played 3 teams with winning records that year and only won against one team with a winning record (Seattle in overtime, who only had a winning record because our div sucked).
7 of their 16 games came against teams with 5 or fewer wins that year. Like the 1-15 Dolphins the 3-13 Rams the 4-12 jets & raiders etc.
Keep everything in perspective. Yes Anderson "Looked" good that year but look back and find out the real reason why.
I agree Jordan, the special teams really has me worried. I hope you are right Brekkon, and I hope that maybe trying all the different newbies on ST's didn't allow us to see the real starters on ST's together much.(Sort of like we never saw the starting offense together at all during the preseason(not even 1 play together !!! )
And I would not trade Nate Davis for Anderson AND Quinn, even if they threw in a sack of footballs and jock straps and paid the salaries for us too ,lol
Matt do you have a way to let the 49ers know how fans think about some of the moves they are making? let simms go to make room for pashos wy the PS have to be change finally we have a bunch of decent 3rd and 2nd players thanks...GO NINERS
We actually lucked out. Marvel Smith was a major injury concern. Now he's gone and Pashos comes in with a record of durability!
Nice! There's got to be a pass rusher out there too. Does anyone know of any that have been let go?
Drunkenmiller had the strongest arm in the NFL during his time! He even bench pressed, I think, 1 thousand pounds! Where's he?
