We tested our new podcast capabilities with "The Question Lady" on Tuesday, so today start trudging forward with our new toy. Niners quarterback Shaun Hill was kind enough to be our test subject.
Hill spent four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings from 2002 to '05. His career consisted of two kneel-down snaps at the end of the '05 season finale. He was a free agent after the '05 season and he did not get many phone calls - until the 49ers decided to give him a chance.
This is Hill's eighth season in the NFL, and this is the first time he has entered practices before the opening week of the regular season higher than No. 3 on a depth chart. (Last year, he was the No. 3 behind J.T. O'Sullivan and Alex Smith before it was discovered on the day before the season opener that Smith had a fractured shoulder.)
As always, I'm open to suggestions. Are there any other players on the 49ers you'd like to hear on the podcast?
* * *
49ERS INJURY STATUS
--Running back Frank Gore, the reigning NFC offensive player of the week after his 207-yard performance in a 49ers victory over
--Wide receiver Brandon Jones is not on the injury report. He went through full practice. He has been medically cleared to play. Now, it's just a matter of him knocking off the rust and returning to game action. He practiced last week, too, but the coaching staff determined he was not ready for game action. More will be known about Jones' availability for Sunday's game on Friday, when Mike Singletary next speaks with the media.
--Linebacker Ahmad Brooks, who has been out since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery after the 49ers' third exhibition game, returned to full practice Wednesday. His availability for Sunday's game in uncertain, as he is likely to be rusty.
--Marques Harris saw limited action at Wednesday's practice because of a toe injury. He has been used as the team's third outside linebacker, and he's been a standout on special teams. If he's healthy, it figures to be difficult for Brooks to find a role on game days.
--Defensive end Justin Smith did not practice, as coach Mike Singletary gave him the day off from practice as a veteran courtesy.
--Guard David Baas (ankle) took part in limited practice, but should be available for Sunday's game. Veteran Tony Wragge is Baas' backup.
--Rookie running back Glen Coffee (hip) took part in full practice.

Good Morning MM.
I tried listening to the streaming podcast (the streaming is a good call by the way)...
But it sounds like the interview was done underwater?!? There is a lot of reverb in the recording...Is it the same for anyone else?
Dre Bly, Brian Jennings, or Allen Rossum sound like good interviews when I heard them on KNBR.
Matt, can you get one of your numerous assistants or an intern to transcribe the podcast? I can't listen to it at work!!! Thanks in advance!
basports,
It's working fine for me. Might be something with your speakers??
Here is an interesting SHaun Hill chart....you all are so good that you may have seen it already, or it may have been posted, but a friend just emailed it to me....
http://www.ninersnation.com/2009/9/24/1052802/49ers-qb-shaun-hill-4th-quarter?ref=yahoo
Thanks Matt. I would like to hear an interview with Mr. Heitman.
.."He was a free agent after the '05 season and he did not get many phone calls "
...i have a strong feeling he didn't get ANY phone calls...
I'm having a similar problem to basports in terms of the scratchy and garbled recording. That's with speakers and headphones. I had the same problem with the "Question Lady" podcast.
In terms of an interviewee, it seems like Staley would be one of the best.
Matt - Nice jobs on the podcasts. If on Gamedays both players get activated who do you think they replace?
Shawntae Spencer and Dashon Goldson
Might have been a little edgy to ask him about his 3rd Q rating?
Q: When does a team have to announce its active players for a Sunday game?
That's incorrect. The San Francisco 49ers called him.
Awesome! Great job as always Matt! Both of your voices sounded a little deep (like you just woke up) so I'm guessing the recording was playing back slow for me. LOL. I'd love to hear an interview with Takeo Spikes. He always sounds like he has a good time with his interviews!
Peoples sound issues probably stem from compatibility issues. Check and make sure your drivers are up to date.
Matt I think Willis would be a great Interview as well as D. Goldson. We never get to hear very much from D. Goldson since other players tend to steal the limelight.
On the offense I would love to hear an interview with Morgan.
The KNBR radio guys have talked to quite a lot of 9ers these past months. Even Bear Pascoe, how about that for the archives.
2 players as yet uncovered & whom I'm very interested to hear are Rachal (still trying to gauge how ornery he is) & Reggie Smith (albeit more when he was such a playmaker during the preseason).
But the guy I want most of all is pass-rush coach Al Harris. Was he instrumental in how the DLs & OLBs played in the 1st 2 games?
Brandon Jones and coming back from shoulder injury might be a good one for interview.
How pissed is Hill gonna be when Jones is playing and he is still inactive? I would like to hear from Zeigler, just to see how he's doing after being PS'd for a couple years. Also, are you limited to players? I would love to hear McC or Jed.
Gotta love the response to the "what does Shawn Hill have to do..." etc...
"Whatever it takes"
Spoken like a winner. Here's hoping he gets out of MN with another one.
It worked fine for me. I would like to hear from Bruce and Jones.
The more the merrier!
use video.
Staley would be great. He's hilarious.
Matt, the interview sounded great to me, keep it up. I vote for Willis as well
love the coverage Matt.. you are definitely my ambassador of KUAN of 49ers info...
go niners
Matt,
Thanks. I enjoyed the streaming podcast very much and had no technical issues. And, I thought the sound quality was great. I too would suggest interviewing OL members - Heitmann and Staley, particularly on OL in-game communications and how they counter the noise element on the road in domed stadiums. I also think it would be interesting to hear from Manny Lawson and how he is working on continuing to improve his pass rush.
Matt i didn't have any problem hearing the audio like some posters did. I think it would be great if 2 things happened.
1. Let the question Lady - ask the first question of every interview.
2. Can you get TKO spikes, Justin Smith, and Parys Haralson? Spikes i think has a lot to say, parys and smith seem like that are seldom interviewed/ heard from and i think it would be interesting to get their perspective on things.
..its interesting so called niner fans didnt even mention Raye and Favre relationship.....
Raye was on the same team with favre last yr.....you wouldn't think "a guy that hates the niners so much" will bring that up.....bunch of loosers...:)
To explain a bit better, i am not suggesting you take the question lady to every interview... merely have her pre-record 1 question to play during the interview and have the player respond to.
True, though he was the RBs coach, so it's unlikely there is/was all that much of a relationship between them. Still, it's an interesting connection no one has made yet. Should we play the seven degrees of Jimmy Raye and see who else we can connect with him? Hehe.
Niners need a pass rush this week and some clever scheming... the line needs to get a push and get their hands up to knock down passes.
Oh, and how bout dem DBs playing physical, checking receivers and sticking running backs?!?!?!?!
Can't wait until kick-off, go 9ers!
Given the negative fan reaction to Jason Hill being deactivated on Sunday's, how are you all going to feel when he is put on waivers to make room for Crabtree?
Comments: 1.
My response: 1. I'll have to get to the point where I can edit the audio for that to happen. I know it can annoy some folks when people involve their children, so I'm mindful of that. Still, I might put The Question Lady to work a little more as time goes on.
2. Spikes is very good in interviews. I'm sure he'll earn some paychecks on TV once his playing career is finished. Smith and Haralson, I'm sure, are fully capable of offering great perspective, but they're reticent to say much when in interview settings. --Matt M.
MM: Carmen Policy was on KNBR this morning. A great interview! Obviously, talked a lot about the 49er "Golden Years" but had some really good insight into the Crabtree non-signing. He'd be a good guy to have on.
Only losers misspell the word "loosers". What the heck is a "looser"? Does that mean things are more loose??? The internet exposes people in ways they couldn't dream.
.....*sigh*...... I hope the OL is up to the task this weekend. As Sing said, those are some big boys we have to move. Inside trap or counter will need a push. I suspect the niners moving the pocket with stretch plays and cut backs. This will also tire the Williams brothas out.
So he mistyped, so what? Does that make you less than others since you called the "Internet" the "internet"? Everyone mistypes even me but if you say that makes someone less of a person I can not agree with your philosophy.
I dislike that poster as much as the next person but I am tired of feeding the Troll so just ignore the Troll.
As others have pointed out "Stop feeding the Troll" If you keep feeding him he will keep coming back for more. If you ignore him you will be happier and he will be more alone then he already is.
We can also start taking the Caesar Milan approach.
"You see I am not acknowledging the bad behavior"
"I am clearly showing the bad behavior will not be rewarded with my attention"
"When he calms down and shows he can behave properly then he will get my attention"
"Pssssttt Bad Troll Pssssst"
....... * long irritating sign * .............. so I'm thinking,
Shaun Hill is going to come through big for us tomorrow. If I recall Morgan's statements he felt (as most receivers do) like we was open a few times last week. Slide up in the pocket Shaun and make a few plays for us. However, throw it away or take the sack if it is not there.
We need to hit V. Davis down the middle a few times at least throw the incompletion. This is getting ridiculous with not feeding him the ball. A few deep passes (completions) and those safties will have to focus elsewhere instead of Gore.
...big dooomy.....u fell for it...:)
dream , dream , dream.....
i hope it does come true....
..hoping, wishing, begging, does not change the reality.....that S.Hill is a duck....
3 more games, and A.Smith can be back where he belongs.....which is leading this team to the playoffs
Brekkon, good post. Reading a post from the 1 who shall not be named is like watching a Michael Moore documentary. You're proably less intelligent after having sat through his personal agenda masked as a documentary but at least you haven't aided his effort. As soon as you pay any attention to them, their words automatically carry some weight and others begin to pay attention. Both are attention starved, life sucking, nuisances. Just ignore them and they will fade into the nevermore.
Thanks Matt,great new feature!
I would like to hear Rathman interviewed.Perhaps in more than one part, since it seems you are limited in how long each podcast runs.
And the QB's coach would also be good to hear from,if the gag is off.
Houston: Michael Moore, perfect !!! I wouldn't soil myself by watching Moore's pathetic nonsense and I have learned to skip right past the one who shall not be named as well. Great comparison !
... to mock the Cialis commercial ... if you experience an Alex Smith erection for more than four years, seek immediate medical attention ...
...And Matt, why not go under cover and find a way to stick a microphone in front of Crabtree . I would love to hear him speak for himself, for the first time since these so called negotiations started.
Did Crabs make any close friends among the other players during mini-camps etc? If so,why don't you have that player make a call and then ask if you can record the call,if and when he answers? Be sneaky !
Sonoco: LMAO ! That must be the post of the year ! You hit the nail right on the head !
Bwaaahahahaha!
oneniner: I will bet your banishment from this blog forever that A. Smith is not the QB of this team 3 games from now (injury excepted) I will put up $200 to be held in trust with Mr. Maiocco..
Matt: I want you to interview MICHAEL CRABTREE!!!
Would love to hear Joe Staley on the podcast Matt!
Michael Crabtree's facebook fan page has some great "fan" posts: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/Michael-Crabtree/32126761948
Alex Smith's fan page on facebook only has 36 members (oneniner, no doubt)! Crabs has 16,000. "Bench Alex Smith" facebook group has 28 members.
..Shaun Hill does not have a page...:)...
..really - i am not making it up
........Micheal Moore has done more good for his country compared to what you and your cowboys will do for yurs ....multiply by 1000
you should be grateful he spens his time trying to correct yrs of ignorant and naive thoughts u hav been unfortunately exposed to.
...and folks dat is a FACT.......
There seems to be a technical problem after Ender posted about the facebook pages, I'm not able to read the next two posts is it my computer? Or are you guys having the same problems reading troll??
We are going to end the Vikes, go niners!!!
Josh Morgan will score I promise.
Matt can you look into the hold up with j hill getting on the field. he made the squad over fan favorite zeigler after struggling to get on the field for preseason, and he did well when he had the chance. why are the niners' coaching staff hoarding him like a plate in the expensive china set. can you find out why they are giving him the shaft come game day? I think he warrants more of an explanation than "coaches' decision"
49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye knows what it's like to integrate Brett Favre into a new offense, especially when Favre decides to show up just before the season starts.
And Raye knows it's not easy.
Raye was the running backs coach in New York last year and was asked about his experience with Favre in New York in advance of Sunday's Vikings-49ers matchup.
Raye called the transition to Favre "very difficult," especially for the team's wide receivers.
"We were way down the road in the direction we were going when that happened," he said. "It was somewhere mid October, late October before . . . it took us most of the month of September just to get accustomed to the cadence. It was -- and I've kind of not thought about it in a while -- but it was very difficult for [receivers] Laveranues [Coles] and Jerricho [Cotchery] because it was a totally different style and they didn't have time to work together.
"Maybe we were different than the situation he's in now. But it took us a long time . . . the adjustment was monumental," Raye said.
Raye's remarks are telling, but he's also smart to point out that the situations were different. Favre has spoken how difficult it was to learn a new system in New York. He's much more comfortable with Brad Childress' offense.
With that said, the team has been forced to adjust to Favre. Not a single receiver on the Vikings is averaging more than 10 yards per catch. Last year, Bernard Berrian averaged 20; tight end Viscathe Shiancoe averaged 14.
Favre will eventually have to show that he can still stretch the field, and this Sunday will provide his first tough test against an improved 49ers defense.
That made me laugh heartily as well!
He's a welcher. Already made that bet with him on opening day against the Cards. He lost and won't honor his bet by leaving the blog for the season.
Wrong drug, you meant CiALEX didn't you?
For some reason I am not able to read any of the comments by OneNiner? His posts seem to be blocked on my computer?
I am very upset by this development !!!
LOL! Yes, that's the one!
"........Micheal Moore has done more good for his country compared to what you and your cowboys will do for yurs ....multiply by 1000"
That is a joke. Moore is a pathetic Big Mac stuffed bloated pos libtard.
With that being said, let's keep the subject on football and the 49ers.
Hey Matt,
podcast sounds great even here in Europe ;-)
Questions made great sense for a podcast and Hill comes over very cool also.
Please leave your conservative ideologies off of this post. I don't bring my left leaning political beliefs into discussion. Right wingers are out numbered in California, especially the Bay.
That being said Michael Crabtree may be the dumbest Texan since our 43rd President. I'm sorry, Michael didn't deserve that.

Excuse the multiple post, they weren't showing up on the page so I reposted. Wasn't trying to be obnoxious.
Hi Matt, Your coverage just gets better and better. I've been listening to Steve Young on some KNBR podcasts and what a wealth of knowledge he conveys to the fans. When asked about Shaun Hill he said that a QB must learn two things, the most important was not losing games the other of course winning. Well Shaun has the not losing down pat and with more PT he'll start winning games. Steve also shared an insight on Crabtree, he stated that the great players want to be on the field no matter what. If they don't they'll never be superstars. It looks like Crabtree at this point does not want to be on the field. Playing the game is less of a priority than money and ego.
...that carolina pick is looking very good now....
looks like they will be 0-3 after sunday...
..nice job McGM
My post was about ignoring trolls. I made a comparison about 2 people who maliciously distort information to serve their own purposes. It had nothing to do with political ideology. Even though, I tend to agree with you that people should submit 49er related comments on this blog, I also realize I'm not the comment police. People are free to say what they want. I cant help but notice that you attempt to stifle free speech when the speech is contrary to your beliefs. Perhaps you should report me to the White House Fishy Comments Czar and they will send me a cease and desist order. In an effort to see eye to eye, I will extend an olive branch to you. Why don't you and the rest of the SS come on over and we can have a book burning party.
Isn't the Vikings game another GPS game? I guess every game for Niners is a GPS game unless you arre playing Rams or Lions
...talk about being a hypocrite...but what else should we expect from ignoramus...
....i think you meant to say why dont we get our hoods and drink beer at a cross burning....
I usually try to ignore you but I have to give you your due. That was a good one.
I've lived all over CA and in Tx. Unfortunately, those attitudes exist everywhere. Not just in Texas. In fact, Id say areas in Northern Ca are MUCH worse than Tx.
Anyway, I agree the Minn game is a GPS game - Even more so than the Seahawks game. The Seahawks game was more important because it was a divisional game. However, the Vikes game may tell us more about where the 9ers really are as a team.
.."who maliciously distort information to serve their own purposes."
...this coming from someone who cant do without fox news....:)
i guess bringing up and dissing M.Moore has nothing to do with political ideology - ....i guess your intellect didnt warn or inform you that could be viewed as a political ideology......then again we understand thinking is such a task for you to do...
i mean its one thing to be ignorant but to be dull too...is just sad....
...dude....we have been on this site longer than most...i dont need to inform you that i have no drop of luv 4 u.....especially going back to your ignorant views on the current american culture and people...
but you did bring up M.Moore without anyone provoking you.......
...really excited about this game.......defense is on fireeee....
houston49er:
You're right, people can say whatever they want. I am not even going to get into attacking or defending. Why? Because I used to frequent political blogs and I left them some months ago to come here to escape politics.
You (and everyone here), can say whatever you want, about whatever you want to, whether I like it or not. I would just like to ask, as nicely as possible, to please keep it about sports, and allow this site to be an escape from the messed up reality of our political discourse.
Thanks.
Go Niners.
Not sure what you're point is. Moore is a proven liar. It's a fact regardless of your political affiliation. I have a suggestion: if you want to dissect each others opinions and get into a fight that has nothing to do with the 9ers then start a new forum post. I realize most of my comments will go over your head but it might be fun insulting you in ways that are above your mental capacity.
The multiple posts are a lot less obnoxious than the comment.
I completely agree with you. I didn't intend to get into a political discussion on this blog. It just steered that way because people made assumptions that happen to be untrue. Enough of that BS.
I am STOKED about Sunday. I actually think the 9ers have a chance. I counted the Minn game as a loss when the schedule came out. Now I think the 9ers have a good shot if Hill can produce. The Vikes have a great run defense so Gore won't have 200 yards. Hill MUST soften up the defense with some completions.
Here's a thought:
Not EVERY idea that passes through our heads is worth sharing.
Whether we agree or disagree doesn't necessarily mean we have to dump those thoughts into cyberspace; particularly when they're off the point! Can we keep it on football?
I already find I have to skip over some contributors' posts (more than just one guy!), let's not make this blog too hard to read.
Yeah I counted this one as an L as well. There are certainly a lot of "ifs" -- IF we can stop AP and pressure Favre, IF we can run the ball and mix plays effectively, IF we take care of the ball and create some turnovers...
But I like our chances. They're as good as they have been in a long time. My gut tells me that our running game is going to be more like it was in game one than game 2, and that it will be a squeaker that requires some critical drives and Hill completions to win. It's good to get freaked out nervous during niner games again though,,,
Do Not Feed The Troll.
Razoreater - celebation of Halloween everyday of the year.......the devil is back!!!
I think even those games are still GPS games, "Gillooly on Puny Squads."
Maybe this is just a GPS season.
..it is a GPS season.....in terms of the QB position - which would be the only key position left to fix after all this years...
4 choices faces the team after this yr at QB
...should S.Hill remain the starter...
....Is A.Smith ready to lead his team...
....Should we draft a 1st round QB.....
.....if we draft a QB what then with N.Davis...
the other issues after the season
....draft a RT or leave snyder or resign the new guy
....Draft another 2nd round Guard or resign Bass
....contract extensions... davis, willis, lawson, harris, battle etc...
For those who have not had a chance to watch the Vikings play yet this season I can tell you Favre was hurried and harrassed regularly by Cleveland and Detroit. Seven sacks and several knock-downs. Favre looks about as immobile as Warner did. I really think the Niners can focus fully on Peterson and expose Favre. 27-23 Niners.
3-0 Baby!
Dashon Goldson is going to have a huge game....
I like it.
Balmer and Franklin are going to be in Hutchinson's back pocket for all four quarters. Unfortunately PWillie's jersey will not be clean in this game, but he'll be ready.
Have I told anyone how much I appreciate PWillie?
If this is true - http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/rumors/post/Holdout-Crabtree-nearly-caved-to-49ers-;_ylt=AjF8CZFSWNTS33OwVVR8i6k5nYcB?urn=nfl,192062 - then, I as a long-time 49er fan want Jed to pull the offer pronto! As I said earlier, use that cash to sign a top free agent in the coming offseason.
Also, could anybody be more wrong than Coach Leach with his assessment that Crabtree wasn't drama?
Great podcat. How about a Niner a week?
You bring up an interesting point about Davis. Yes, yes, I know that he was only playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers, etc, but I was still impressed by his arm strength, accuracy, presence, and mobility. His decision making considering how little he has played showed promise as well.
But next year is a good QB heavy draft. If the Niners draft a McCoy, etc., what to do about Davis? In a perfect world, it would be great to know what we have in Davis so to either skip the QB's and build the team through our draft picks in other areas, or go after a franchise QB.
Of course it is not a perfect world, and we may not really know whether Davis will show that potential before then or not. Because the only way I can envision that is Hill getting hurt, Smith doing what he does (not win), and Davis getting the call. I am not wishing for that.
It is somewhat of a personnel dilemma.
Since Frank Gore relishes contact, I would love to see him crush a blitzing corner or safety and take him out of the game. That would be awesome!!!
Yes! Can we PLEASE see some Frank Geezy in pass protection? Maybe I'm trippin', but I haven't seen a whole lot of that in the past two games. Gore is one of the best pass protecting RBs I've ever seen.
Iread the link article and wasn't able to post this. Regarding Crabtree:
Way to go SF. Some one had to hold these children to a standard. As a Niner fan I'm worried he won't gel with the team that's working so hard to improve after a 2 win streak.
Mark, look in to the story a little more next time. The Niners are not feeling sassy with a 2-0 record. They're not satisfied with their level of play. So says coach, and many players.
I worry Crabtree makes bigger problems once signed.
On keeping our comments about sports.
I really hope Moore never does a film on sports, the guy's an idiot.
Yeah we don't get to see him block because Jimmy Raye loves the conservative passing attack and Gore is a good receiver out of the backfield. We know #21 rocked the Raiders when pass protecting this summer and I'd love to see it in the regular season to make some guys sorry they blitzed our QB
Drafting Crabtree was a HUGE brain fart on the part of the Niners. No way around it.
If you haven't seen this article on Coach Sing take a look and pass it on!
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1160516/index.htm?eref=sisf
Man...
I don't think most of us realized in the beginning what Coach Singletary was bringing to the table. The more I learn about the man and the way he conducts himself I'm constantly blown away.
We could be witnessing the beginning of something great
Are you kidding me, I have a problem with free speech? I'm one of the most prolific activist in UC Berkeley history. I just believe this isn't the forum for politics. Your comment was definitely politically charged. I gave my Bush comment as an example of what this does to our post. Other proven liars you could have chosen are our aforementioned 43rd, Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sarah Palin.... the list is a long one. Please lets keep it to football. And lets not get personal. I'm a peace loving person, but I am deadly in a battle of wits.
Your the one who began dragging this out and making it stay alive. LET IT GO!!!
Its obvious you cant just roll with a statement with political bias you have to get offended and since you get offended you say something and keep it alive.
Jeez, If you don't like what was said just move on. or moveon.org or whatever!
His post would have gone away if it were not for you complaining because you were offended.
It takes two willing participants to keep political bias alive and continuing to be posted.
All you did was allow one political bias stay alive because of your own political bias
Do you need a tissue? Does your vagina hurt? Jeez Man up AND DROP IT! Be the better man.
Move on to the next post if someone says something in your opinion is stupid.
Also, If anything your posts are politically charged too. Not because you mentioned that GW bush guy. You are the one bringing up that his was about politics and dragging this on and on and on and on and on and on and on. LET IT GO.
The truth is, you would not have raised a stink if he had used Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sarah Palin. You probably would have posted "hahaha that was a good one"
So you are nothing more than a hypocrite.
For some reason I am not able to read any of the comments by OneNiner? His posts seem to be blocked on my computer?
I am very upset by this development !!!
I think YOU are the wrong one Ender, not coach leach, who actually knows the kid and is not just an irate ,illogically emotional fan, like you.
But at least you are a passionate fan !

Too late !
Houston : Keep up the good work ...
and are you having the same problem that I am having...
For some reason I am not able to read any of the comments by OneNiner? His posts seem to be blocked on my computer? Maybe that community organizer has taken over the internet and blocked free speech ,as we know he would like to do ?)
I am very upset by this development !!!
Maybe we should write our congresswomen and complain about OneNiner's rights being violated like this ?
