Frank Gore did something Sunday that only Hall of Famer Barry Sanders has done. That's some pretty good company.
Gore scored on running plays of 79 and 80 yards. Only Sanders has scored on TD runs of 75 yards or more in the same game in the history of the NFL. What made it even more special is that the 49ers needed those two plays for their 23-10 victory over the Seahawks.
And, obviously, Gore received a lot of help to get into the end zone:
First quarter, first-and-10 from SF 21
This is a power counter play, and everyone did his job.
TE Vernon Davis lines up on the right side, and while everybody else is blocking down, his job is to hold up SS Deon Grant on the outside. He does not let Curry get off his block, and Curry is never a factor on the play.
RT Adam Snyder blocks down on DT Red Bryant and completely rides him out of the play.
RG Chilo Rachal easily handles MLB David Hawthorne, who lined up in the A gap between the guard and center.
C Eric Heitmann pushes DT Colin Cole into the backfield while Gore is going the other way.
LG David Baas' block is the key on this power counter. He pulls and gets a block on Lawrence Jackson to create the opening.
LT Joe Staley makes the adjustment to handle DE Darryl Tapp, who moved outside Staley before the snap to inside him at the last second.
SE Josh Morgan goes in motion from right to left. He comes set behind Baas and Staley and then works 10 yards down the field to block CB Josh Wilson.
FL Isaac Bruce lines up on the left side and ties up CB Ken Lucas long enough to make it impossible for him to catch Gore down the field.
FB Moran Norris lines up in front of Gore in the off-set I formation. He follows Baas' left hip and chips
Gore squeeze through the opening and uses umpire Darrell Jenkins as a shield to get past FS Jordan Babineaux. Gore then uses the video screen to know from where the pursuit was coming. He angled to the right and dove into the end zone.
Oh, yeah . . . QB Shaun Hill handed Gore the ball.
The touchdown gave the 49ers a 10-0 lead with 2:36 remaining in the quarter.
Third quarter, first-and-10 from SF 20
This run play is a zone-blocking scheme in which everybody is blocking their gaps and moving to the right. The play can go to the right side or Gore can cut it back to the left. That's what he wisely did.

Here's the player-by-player review from the 49ers' 23-10 victory over the Seahawks:
Quarterbacks
7-Nate
11-Alex Smith: Did not play.
13-Shaun Hill: It was an unspectacular day. Hill just keeps winning. He completed 19 of 26 passes for 144 yards, but was sacked four times. He ran right into Patrick Kerney for the first sack;
Running backs
21-Frank Gore: He gained 207 yards and two touchdowns on 16 rushing attempts, and also caught all five passes thrown his way for 39 yards. He left game with 7:30 remaining after spraining right ankle on tackle by Will Herring.
24-Michael Robinson: Played on special teams and got a few snaps when Gore and Glen Coffee were nicked. He caught two passes for 4 yard. On special teams, he slowed up kick returner Deon Butler to help stop him at 12-yard line on fourth-quarter return.
29-Glen Coffee: His illegal block on a punt return wiped out Allen Rossum's 75-yard TD; released nicely out of the backfield to catch short pass and come up with 11-yard gain. Finished with nine rushes for 13 yards and caught two passes for 16.
44-Moran Norris: He saw a lot of action, as the 49ers went primarily with their base offense that consist of a fullback. He actually got to touch the ball a little, as he gained career-long 15-yard on a counter play in the second quarter; made important 11-yard catch on third-and-10 when 49ers had ball at own 1. Carried twice for 16 yards, and caught three passes for 17.
Wide receivers
18-Micheal Spurlock: Entered twice at QB in the 49ers' Taser offense. He fumbled the handoff to Gore on a third-and-5 and managed to get 3 yards; had Vernon Davis open for a first down on a third-and-22 but the former Ole Miss QB badly overthrew him out of the Taser formation;
81-Brandon Jones: Inactive. He fractured right shoulder blade on Aug. 6 and returned to practice last week.
83-Arnaz
84-Josh Morgan: Made back-to-back blocks on corner that enabled Gore to gain 9 and 13 yards; he did a nice job blocking but did not see a pass come him way.
88-Isaac Bruce: Made nice defensive player to bat down a would-be interception of Ken Lucas on deep pass; should've been able to catch ball that would've gone for at least 25 yards on a corner route in second quarter. He had a second drop on a short pass thrown behind him; kept fourth-quarter drive alive with two third-down catches.
89-Jason Hill: Inactive, coaches' decision.
Tight ends
46-Delanie
85-Vernon
Offensive line
59-Cody Wallace: Inactive, coaches' decision.
62-Chilo Rachal: Did a good job of preventing penetration through his gap. Very strong at the point of attack but did not always hold his block long enough.
64-David Baas: He had a much better game than in the opener, including big contributions on Gore's TD runs.
65-Barry Sims: Saw action on field-goal team.
66-Eric Heitmann: Overall, a very good game despite a holding penalty that wiped out 23-yard pass to
68-Adam Snyder: He was better than last week, but there's still a lot of room for improvement. Although he was working against Patrick Kerney, who recorded the first sack of the game, it wasn't Snyder's fault. Hill should've gotten rid of the ball and he ran right into the defender; also allowed Lawrence Jackson to work to his outside to strip Hill for a sack and fumble.
69-Tony Wragge: Saw action on special teams.
74-Joe Staley: He's been the 49ers' best offensive lineman in both of the first two games. Got nice kick-out block to help spring Norris for 15-yard run; recovered fumble after Hill fumble.
77-Tony Pashos: Played two possessions in first half and was beaten soundly around corner by
Defensive line
90-Isaac Sopoaga: Played very stout at the line of scrimmage, and was credited with two tackles.
91-Ray McDonald: Had rookie RG Max Unger on rollerskates to sack Hasselbeck on third play of the game.
92-Aubrayo Franklin: Nice play to sniff out screen and work down the line to throw Julius Jones for 5-yard loss in second quarter; got a little pressure on Hasselbeck up middle to force him to scramble at run out of bounds after 2 yards. Recorded three tackles.
93-Demetric Evans: Saw about 10 snaps on defense, and also played on special teams.
94-Justin Smith: The pass rush wasn't as dominant as a week ago. He made tackle of Julius Jones for 1-yard gain when the Seahawks were backed up; had a broken tackle of Justin Forsett that resulted in 13 extra yards on a screen pass.
95-Ricky Jean-Francois: Inactive, coaches' decision.
96-Kentwan Balmer: He is showing signs of developing into a pretty good player. He saw a lot of action in the rotation and did not disappoint with four tackles including one for a loss.
Linebacker
51-Takeo Spikes: His blitz up middle on second play of game hurried Hasselbeck into incomplete pass. He was credited with five tackles.
52-Patrick Willis: Came up hard to force incomplete pass to Justin Griffith on third-down play; knocked Hasselbeck out of the game with hard hit at the goal line that prevented touchdown. He had five tackles.
53-Jeff Ulbrich: Did not play from scrimmage, but had an assisted tackle on special teams.
54-Marques Harris: Got Hasselbeck a tick too late as a pass-rusher off the left side in second quarter; played on the coverage units. Also made contribution with two tackles on special teams.
55-Ahmad Brooks: Inactive, underwent arthroscopic on left knee Aug. 31 to remove a bone fragment.
56-Scott McKillop: Did not play from scrimmage, but had two tackles on special teams.
98-Parys Haralson: His pressure from the outside forced Hasselbeck to step up and get sacked by McDonald; had a fourth-quarter offside penalty. It was a quiet game after he played so well in the opener.
99-Manny Lawson: Made nice play to string Julius Jones out on a sweep to the right, leading to a loss of yardage; he failed to pick up Jones out of the backfield on 1-yard TD pass at the end of the first half. Working against Jones, he narrow missed getting to Wallace on the pass that was intercepted. Showed his athletic ability to run down scrambling Wallace and hold him to 1-yard gain in the fourth quarter. He was credited with four tackles.
Defensive backs
22-Nate Clements: It was another physical Clements performance as he came up with six tackles and four passes defensed. He was ruled to get to the ball a split-second too early on pass to T.J. Houshmandzadeh for an 18-yard pass interference penalty; broke up pass to Nate Burleson down the field that resulted in Goldson's interception. Upended Jones with a tackle on swing pass. Broke up fourth-down pass in end zone with 2:11 remaining.
23-Marcus
25-Tarell Brown: Made good play as gunner on punt coverage to hold up Justin Forsett until his 'mates got there. He was not credited with a tackle but he helped corral Forsett on that play for a minus-1-yard return;
26-Mark Roman: Played in six-DB situations, and did a very nice job with some sure-tackling. Roman had five tackles. He came up to make a nice tackle on Burleson to keep him inbounds late in the fourth.
28-Curtis
30-Reggie Smith: Saw action as a gunner on punt coverage and had one assisted tackle after being inactive for Week 1.
31-Dre' Bly: Made a nice contribution out of the slot, breaking up one pass with a hard hit on Houshmandzadeh;
32-Michael Lewis: Came up aggressively in run support to run Julius Jones out of bounds for 2-yard loss in first quarter. He had a team-high nine tackles, mostly in run support. But one tackle came after he surrendered a pass down the field.
36-Shawntae Spencer: Was all over fade route to Houshmandzadeh on third-down pass in end zone to force a Seattle FG; did another good job on Housh on another deep route later in game.
38-Dashon Goldson: Made a quick adjustment from thinking about a big hit to catching a deflected pass for a third-quarter interception. Added three tackles.
Special teams
4-Andy Lee: Used his rugby-style kick to drop 41-yard punt at the
6-Joe Nedney: Made field goals of 37, 42 and 39 yards.
20-Allen Rossum: Had a 75-yard punt return for a TD nullified. He averaged 7 yards on five punt returns, and had one 20-yard kickoff return.
86-Brian

Practice squad
T Alex Boone: A project, the rookie from
LB Diyral Briggs: Made it past the 53-man cut, but was released when club signed Pashos.
WR Dobson Collins: The rookie from Gardner-Webb mimics the opponent's top receiver in practice.
TE Joe Jon Finley: Won the practice-squad job over draft pick Bear Pascoe.
FB Brit Miller: The converted linebacker showed enough promise to stick around.
OL Drew Radovich: Among the Vikings' final cuts, he was added to the 49ers' practice squad Sept. 9.
RB Kory Sheets: Explosive runner was among the final cuts.
WR Dominique Zeigler: Has not practiced during the first two weeks because of an ankle sprain.

seeing how horribly spurlock played makes me rage about about hill not even being off the inactive list. like I said a little earlier, I'm a bit biased towards jason because a few of my friends went to school with him, but seriously the wildcat plays were just disgusting. I will say though that spurlock made a good tackle after his disastrous fumble for 3 yards. please stop using jason as a place holder for crabtree...
Matt- What is the scoop on the tampering charge?
..."Hill just keeps winning."....Nah dude, you got this one wrong ...The team is the one doing the winning especially the defense....
Hill sucks.....why not just put the rookie back there
My observations...
defense remains solid -
Play calling is the best in years - Raye is the man
FS Goldson - Keeps impressing - i cant recall last time i watched back to back games where the defense is not givin up big plays...
Spencer - belongs in the probowl if he continues playing like this.
S.Hill sucks - HE HIS SO SCARED TO TAKE A CHANCE....cmon who plays QB like this
What is actually pissing me off is - we have talented WR's and not using them........you just have to wonder if crabtree does have a point here....
...Hill did not make one play you will consider as making the difference in this game......not one....
it was all GORE and the DEFENSE......
'the wildcat plays were just disgusting'
That's because the wild cat doesn't work. Jst like when Vick and the Falcons ran the option, it works the first few times, but teams have seen it now. Rather than copy someone else's innovations, teams need to create their own.
Has any team ran the wild cat with success this year?
I guess we'll see if MIA attempts it tonight.
By the end of the year, the recieving core will be Bruce, Morgan, Crabtree, and Jones. Spurlock, Hill, and/or Battle will be irrelevant.
..thanks to Willis - the seagrls will be in the market for a QB next yr./...Hasselback is done...payback is a b...h
From Rotoworld
According to the New York Daily News, the 49ers have filed tampering charges against the Jets for contacting Michael Crabtree's agent.
Crabtree is threatening to sit out the season and re-enter next year's draft. It's believed that the Jets have contacted his agent to express interest in trading for his rights or drafting him in 2010 with a salary proposal greater than what the Niners are offering. The Jets are denying the allegations
PFT and ESPN are running with the story too...if this can be proved they should be hammered worse than we were over Briggs
OneWhiner said: "..thanks to Willis - the seagrls will be in the market for a QB next yr./...Hasselback is done...payback is a b...h"
Payback is a b...h.. especially if the seahawks ended up with one more loss than we did at the end of the year and end up picking the Franchise QB we wanted to draft.
So yeah don't expect the Jets to lose a draft pick any time soon. Goodell is bleeping joke. He has no freaking credibility. When he first came into this position he turned heads with his no nonsense style, but since then he's turned into a hypocrite of douchebaggerous proportions.
For those who want to say Hill sucks, thank you for your opinion. And now that you've said it, understand that we've heard it, know your opinion but would rather not have to hear the same thing over and over. Kind of makes the blog comments less interesting, it just becomes old after awhile. It's a long season, and all QB's have bad games, so while Hill hasn't had one yet even when he does, know that we know your view now and won't need reminders over the entire 16 weeks. Thanks guys!
Putting a Rookie in right now would be like putting you in charge of anything important. Hill doesn't turn the ball over, it very good on 3rd downs, and completes a high percentage of his passes. Nolan's Son, GIVE THESE NOTES TO ALEX SMITH and he might be something in this league someday. Hill is a winner. Very similar to how Jim McMahon played for the Bears back in the mid 80's. Nothing Spectacular just a PURE WINNER and that is what Hill is. Davis is the Future, Smith Should be Cut and given the chance to start over somewhere else because he has NO FUTURE with the 49ers with Davis in the mix.
Does anyone know who was the best college QB between Battle, Robinson and Spurlock? The taser's battery is dead right now with Spurlock. Don't want to see it on 3rd and long especially if Spurlock is throwing. Jimmy Raye; can you say 'first down' so the D can get a breather in the heat?
Hey Matt,
you forgot to include sheets. He was suited up
..its so obvious S.Hill is going to cost us an important game.....
he his what he his - A BACKUP
...."S.Hill simply doesn't have what it takes mentally to become a high-end franchise quarterback."
Hey EEyore go back to the hundred acre wood. Ya welcher.
..."Unfortunately, the inconvenient truth for Gore is that he usually doesn't hold up for an entire season. Gore sprained his ankle during Sunday's game,"
.....nobody in their right mind believes S.Hill can win a game without Gore in the back field....
I don't know why everybody is complaining about Shaun Hill, the Niners don't have a better option anyway. Alex Smith is a bust and Nate Davis isn't ready. The Niners have two first round picks next year and potentially a third if they deal Crabtree's rights, they'll get a QB next year. Just enjoy the success they're having with Hill under center, if they're one and done in the postseason this year, it's still a successful season...
Don't you owe someone a few thousand dollars who bet you we wouldn't go 1-3, which was your proclamation?
Will you kill this annoying Hill bashing? I don't think there are that many people who would argue with your assertion that Hill is ultimately not much more than a decent backup QB, but he moves the ball and sustains drives. We have only turned it over once in two games, and he hasn't thrown a pick yet. You might prefer a guy like Smith who takes shots into double coverage and throws a few picks a game, but I think it's pretty nice we can take the ball with 2 min left in the third, go 75 yards and kick a field goal, and give it back to the other team with 6:30 left in the fourth. He won't make big plays, but he will control the game, and more often than not, we will get a win. If you think one of the other QB's on the roster gives us a better chance to win, I think you're flat out wrong.
alanmarks said it best -
....."Whenever Hill gets stuck in a jam, he has no ability to improvise. He gets sacked too easily. That, plus weak arm means this guy should NOT be our QB. As little faith as I have in Smith, there's so much more you can do with your offense with him in there. I'll take a few mistakes. It's not like Sean Hill doesn't fumble."
...i will take the mistakes any day over this nonsense of a QB.....
oneniner, there you go again with all that animosity against Hill. Nobody is saying he is our franchise QB. I swear you must be A Smith's father or something. What you fail to realize is Hill didn't loose the game for us. As with the Ravens of the past, the defense and running game are the focus. The QB just needs to not throw interceptions and give the team a drive or two that eats up clock and puts points on the the board. Twice in as many weeks Hill had long drives in the second half which took time off the clock and provided points.
Again, not sure if Hill can bring us back from 2-3 scores down. But I would give the 9ers a fighting chance if he can provide 1-2 scores and the defense picks up another score. This is how the 9ers will win this year. Scrappy ugly looking games.
The thing is, we deserved to win the past two weeks, it was ugly for all team involved, but we came out on top and that is something to say.
Bottom line Hill didn't suck, he did exactly what we expected.
Dominant win over a team a lot of folks are picking as division champs. I'm one happy camper this morning. I'd say GPS was pointing way up.
I don't know next week is that important. Niners don't have to win every game and this is going to be very, very tough to win. I'm just hoping we can knock Brett around a bit. Teach him to stop being such a pratt.
Denver's defense was awesome again yesterday. Good to see Mike Nolan doing well. Shame the two teams won't meet in the regular season.
JoshInSB, don't count on this schmuck to pay his dues, if he did, he wuould not even be in this blog. Just do what I do, stop reading his posts they're all about how HILL (9-3 as a starter) sucks and how Smith (our back-up) is better.
Just enjoy the win, and get ready for our real NFL-GPS game next sunday!!
Knock, knock...who's there, 3, 3 and what, 3 and O baby, yeah!!!
Just listened to Steve Young on Murph & Mac (KNBR). He said, in dicussion about Shaun Hill, for those people that undervalue what Hill does really don't know anything about football. So it looks like the shoe fits........wow, to be put in your place by a Hall of Fame QB.
..all this talk about "all he does his wins" is full of crap....
If MM really believes this how come he hasnt done a compare stats with other QB's in the league...
I remember a QB named Grossman who all he did was take a Bears team to the SB - where is he now?
the nfl is a QB driven league -
I mean even Sanchez is playing like a pro while Hill is playing like a rookie.....
(i was so wrong about the Sanchez kid)
MM - If you want the definition of "it" look to sanchez not Hill .....
.."Again, not sure if Hill can bring us back from 2-3 scores down"
...OF COURSE HE CANNOT
....And we all know its coming.....we cant expect the defense to keep playing this well....
Anyone who would be happy with the 49ers making the Super Bowl this year, win or lose, please raise your hand.
*raises hand*
Great win.
I guess that's the one downside of an 8 man front. If you can break through the first wall, there is nobody left to bring down the runner. Hopefully the league will take note of what happened yesterday, and back off the eight nine man front. Once they do, we will start getting 8-10 yards a pop on the ground. Gore busting the two long runs yesterday was the best thing that could have happened. I bet there is a lot of head scratching among the Minnesotta defensive coaches this week.
I am not worried about Hill. Every time he has been put in a position to have to win the game through the air he has come through. Look at last week. Arizona stuffed our running game, but Hill came through with when needed with a 16 play drive. He will never remind us of Elway or Montana, but he will get the job done more often than not.
Go team. Beat the Vikings.
...its called the nolan spine flu....instead of letting our more promising QB's go in there and learn, we have this bum who is not taking advantage of our solid WR's.....
Whaz the point of paying the WR's or even drafting them in the 1st round.....
this s.hill guy cant throw and complete a long pass if the whole world depended on it....
this guy is lucky we play in the nfc west -
....the difference is MASTER RAYE.....the play calling is awesome...
Coach raye deserves more praise in game calling and management....cuz lets be honest S.Hill is doing nothing else but just run the play and when the play beaks down he breaks down.... no ability to improvise...none at all
Yeah, but he's gotta rethink that Taser. I didn't like calls on 3rd and 5, 3rd and 22. The second one was open, but the pass was terrible. I think we need to use Battle or Robinson, who are likely more accurate passers.
yes oneniner,... the sooner you realize we are an 8-8 team this year, the sooner you will focus on the important things we need to improve, like the development of our receivers, a consistent pass ruch and over all OL play. It is nice to see you giving Spencer props b/c CB and S play is another thing we need to continue to improve on.
Again, Hill is what he is, and nothing else. I don't buy into or beleive in the "he is a winner" like everyone is saying. But what he isn't, is a mistake laden looser. A bit contradictory but important statement.
The Minn game is the true test of this team. I think the match up is good. We must tackle and stay vigilant. The line play on both sides will be key. If given time Hill will come through. This is going to be VERY EXCITING TO WATCH.
Lol you need a hobby.
Oneniner, Let's all agree on a few things. Hill is 9-3 as a starter - better than any starting QB the team has had since Garcia by a wide margin. ASmith had multilple opportunities to be the starter, including this year, and wasn't able to beat Hill out. NDavis is a rookie and not ready. The Niners are 2-0 and in the driver seat in the NFC West. This is the best position the team has occupied for many years and presently Hill is the best QB on the roster by a wide margin and the team is winning. For the present that means - CASE CLOSED, the Niners have no better QB to play until next year at the earliest. Enjoy the success, Hill is a material contributing factor to it.
Can't you tell? This IS his hobby :)
.."Again, Hill is what he is, and nothing else. I don't buy into or beleive in the "he is a winner" like everyone is saying. But what he isn't, is a mistake laden looser. A bit contradictory but important statement. "
...I agree with you.....and i do honestly think one of S.Hill's positive is not throwing int's...actually it is the only positive.....but this is not flag football -
I cant stand QB's that are scared of taking chances......can't win big games with them, can't win playoffs with them, can't win the sb with them....
...i don't give a damn about int's - i want my QB to be feared...this guy is feared by no-one....
he his stunting the growth of our WR's
"...i don't give a damn about int's - i want my QB to be feared...this guy is feared by no-one...."
Then you should love Rex Grossman, who you earlier besmirched. He didn't mind throwing it up for grabs.
Matt
Appreciate your player-by-plsyer analysis, and agree that Snyder still needs to improve but I thought he did a good job running Jackson behind Hill; Hill should have stepped up into the pocket to make his throw.
Was also impressed by Balmer, he absolutely swallowed the running back on one tackle.
Thought Hill missed seeing open receivers several times; would have made the passing game look better.
I was wondering if someone would remember and bring up oneniner's $2,000 bet that the 49ers go 1-4 before the bye week. Who took him up on that bet?
No comment from oneniner on this ... cause that's what weasels do!
Maybe we can all band together and get MM to have oneniner banned for not paying up on his bet.
Oneniner, has one topic (bashing Hill) that uses up every bit of his one brain cell.
Why all the negativity towards Hill? He doesn't need to take chances when we are winning. All I know is we are 2-0. When Hill starts to play badly and cost us games, then that's when it's fair to complain. I guess we'll cross that bridge when (or if) we come to it. Until then, stop the hating.
If you really think Nate Davis gives us a better chance to win THIS YEAR, you are crazy. He looked decent in preseason against a bunch of 3rd-string bums. Time for a REALITY CHECK. He was very unimpressive in the Senior Bowl and at the combine. He has a long way to go before he's ready to take the field in a regular season game.
And I'm not biased towards Hill, I'm actually a big Smith fan and still a strong believer in him, but it's really unfair to badmouth Hill when he hasn't done anything to deserve the negative comments.
S. Hill is what Walsh would call a technician. With good talent around him he can win and won't screw up often to lose it for you. We used to have these guys as back ups.
Yeah, I brought it up a bit earlier in this post. SC Rick said
"OK, 2-3
Again, the only condition is that Hill starts the first 5 games, right?"
Though oneniner never answered, and then changed the subject:
"nah - dude...if you are gonna bet - you gonna bet with your childish comments on here supporting HILL"
It was in this post:
http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/2009/08/davis-would-be-fourth-option.html
I think you should take off those reverse reality glasses you wear. Your rhetoric on Hill, now saying "Master Raye" and awesome play calling in the same sentence UGH! I saw way too many three and outs again, a totally ineffective 'taser' formation on 3rd down again and what happened to using VD and Walker in the 2nd half. How many times does running up the middle on 2nd down before it's considered a major tendency? How about a little play action on that down. Steve Young confirmed what we already knew about your football knowledge.
Matt: What has happened with J. Hill? It is puzzling to see his demise for no apparent reason. Has he somehow ended up on Sullivan's blacklist? Sullivan seems to target some players this way for no apparent reason.
...dude...blame the guy executing the plays.....
...Master Raye obviously does not have any confidence in S.hill throwing ability...
2 straight games ....back in our goaline and we run 3 straight times.....it is obvious he has no confidence in Hill taking chances down the field
...thank you....he his what he his - a backup
oneniner, you keep going on about a franchise QB. You will get your QB next year, especially if Carolina keeps loosing.
The ultimate goal for the 9ers every game is to win. By any (legal) means necessary. Hill gives us our best chance at winning.
Your point of stunting the growth of the receivers is valid, at least you are getting someone with your Hill argument. I would suggest focusing on these types of arguments and not Hill's physical abilities or choice to manage the game. You may have a point to make as the season goes on. B/C my concern is the continuous improvement of the team.
"One consistent thing of Hill is that he can orchestrate very long, mistake free drives. The problem is that they don't result in TDs as often as they should. Hopefully that will change this year."...
....Nah - it hasn't changed .....it is wht he his....a FG - QB
"Your point of stunting the growth of the receivers is valid, at least you are getting someone with your Hill argument."
..dude that is my NUMBER ONE CONCERN...
this is ridiculous.....how can Morgan not have one pass thrown to him.....
...you know what i think the seagrlz are overrated without holmgren.....
S.Hill, has only started 12 games in his career, is 9-3 as a starter. His 3rd offensive coordinator in 3yrs. He will get better as he and the rest of the offense develops in the NEW system. Lets go Niners!
Don't worry too much about the receivers growth as we are only in week two. There are multiple factors involved with running an offensive scheme. Hill will be tested that is for sure (one would argue he was tested last week, 'The Drive'). As for the receiver, I don't know what is going on or suppose to go on.
I wish I could be in the fill room today with the guys and hear what the coaches and players have to say as the critique every play and player.
I bet it would go something like this...
"Hill good job not gambling and just taking the sack. We need not put our defense in a bad position with a short field. We have a stud punter."
"Hill, looking at this play your first read was Morgan and if you would have just slide to the right and bought yourself another second, Morgan would have cleared and sat in the zone for an open pass. Moving forward we will need you to make that pass."
"Hill, why did you run right into P. Kerney for that sack, you're an athlete show some twinkle toes... (everyone in the room laughs)...good job OL, let's move on..."
"Morgan, we need you not get jammed up at the line of scrimmage on a second and long pass play. Hill slid up in the pocket and now we need you to uphold your end of the deal and get open."
"Folks we are a young developing offense playing at the NFL level, this is not backyard football. In order for us to be successful, the OL must protect, the WR must run the correct route and get open, the QB must make the right read and execute."
Great game and it was good to see Raye respond with not one but two big answers to oppenents stacking the box. Offense has played well although some of that has been "not to lose" fashion which isn't sexy and will invite moaners. Defense has been physically dominating and aging teams like seattle are limping away.
Biggest surprise with this team to me through two: Surprise promotee Shawntae Spencer has been an absolute shut-down corner against the two best passing teams in our division.
Matt,
It would be cool if you included a coaches section in your weekly recaps. Again, I thought Manuskys plan was solid. We are generating alot more pressure than I anticipated even though it's not coming from Lawson. The energy level on defense is awesome. Hopefully we can keep that up over 16 or more games.
On offense, I FREAKING HATED Raye's play calling. WTH is that man looking at? Even Billick said he'd need to ask his old friend about certain play calls, or something to that effect. I'm a freaking beer swilling old man sitting on a couch and I knew when Morgan goes in motion toward the WB, Gore's getting the ball to the 2,4, or 6 holes. His play calling is either extremely poor or extremely predictable. He uses the Wildcat in all the wrong situations. 2nd and short is a good time. 3rd and 20 is the wrong time. How can a seemingly intelligent man with so much experience be such a poor play caller?
Other than that I'm ecstatic the 9ers are 2-0 and a convincing 2-0 against the supposed top teams in the division. Life is good. Let's keep it that way.
..."Hill, why did you run right into P. Kerney for that sack, you're an athlete show some twinkle toes... (everyone in the room laughs)..."
Good stuff.....again i am not bashing Hill...i am just saying it like it is...
..if hill was only throwing 10 passes and 4 of them were long completions on target - I will be praising him...
but i just cant for the love of GOD see what he his doing on the field as a positive to the overall team.....
Now talk about the positives...
Shawntae Spencer for pro-bowl.....i always knew he was stud...
Gore - we know!!!
O-line - impressed
Gholston - very impressed
OC and DC - impressed
Matt...
If the Jet's are found guilty of tampering what do you think the outcome would be??? Trade of picks, money???
Oneniner... I challenge you to dispute the fact that Shaun Hill is undefeated at home and 9 - 3 as a starter.
Everything you say is pointless... change ure diaper and accept the fact that he's THE QB. hahahaha
> SE Josh Morgan goes in motion from right to left.
A split end cannot go into motion. On that play, Josh Morgan lined up at FL and Isaac Bruce at SE.
guys we need someone like oneniner. such a critic of shaun hill but deep in his tummy he is praising him for winning the game no matter how ugly it is.
...:).....you know whtz up...
watchin the game again...
1.) Shaunte Spencer is SICK!!!
2.) Our O-Line did a great job!!!
3.) We have the BEST LB in the game... P.Willy is AMAZING!!!
ps - oneniner - S.Hill won again :P
Hill is a winner, and if the 49ers were an arena league team, he'd be perfect. The problem is with his "game management" style is that the WR corps has plenty of talent (esp when Jones comes back) that Hill's weak arm can never tap into.
We might as well have all TEs or possession receivers for him to dink and dunk to. He can't hit a receiver in stride on anything longer than 20 yards, and for every receiver but Davis and Battle on this team, that's a waste of their potential, and ultimately the team's potential.
Somehow the plan has to be to shift to Alex Smith or Nate Davis within the next few weeks (maybe after the bye). Then it will have been a great thing that Sean Hill's efficiency and turnover-free play helped us to get off to a positive start with some momentum and the feeling that maybe a decade-long cloud has been lifted. But don't get complacent!
Let's not REACT to the inevitable when it happens. Let's ANTICIPATE some teams will get out 14 points ahead of us and be ready to win when it does happen. Keeping Hill as our starter means we're resigned to losing those games and it will result in a season that sputters to a disappointing finish with NO PLAYOFFS and no momentum for next season.
another hater...
You're opinions have no backing and you give all the other coaches we face no credit. Why keep insisting his "Luck" is going to run out??? He's winning games, throwing good throws... and Bruce is his main target. Hill's arm is just fine and we're going to the Playoff's this year!!!
Can we please just forget about the taser? It didn't work last year and it wont work this year. Come on already!
...you know who is clueless....
Even Hill himself his not happy with his play - "Improved 49ers aren't satisfied with 2-0"
.....
Are you kidding Hill is fine and at this time, we haven't needed him to throw any more 50 bombs in stride to Brice. And your comments regarding a transition to Smith or Davis during our two winning streak in nonsense.
In fact I'd rather run the taser all day than bring A. "I'm a Bust but for some reason people ion SF still really really support me" Smith.
.."This league is about constant improvements," 49ers quarterback Shaun Hill said. "If we go out there next week and play like we did the first two games, it won't be good."
...i luv this guy S.Hill - he his saying exactly what i am saying.....
The difference from what Hill is saying and what you are saying is,...
If the 9ers play like they have on offense so far this season it won't be good... but if A. Smith is in there it will be much much worse.
Again Hill gives us the best chance to stay in the game and win. He will be tested, if we loose there will be adjustments, but I can tell you this, NO QB ADJUSTMENT UNTIL THE BYE WEEK.
We just have to be smart with our decisions and chances to win. B/c our schedule is tough through the end of Nov. If we make it to Dec with a 6-5 or even 5-6 record, I will be ecstatic. We will then control our destiny...playoff destiny. This is a huge game at Minn.
Go 9ers!!!
Shaun Hill from the neck up may be the 3rd best QB in the NFL. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the 50th best NFL arm to go with his brilliant NFL brain. That makes him a perfect backup.
The 49ers themselves don't believe Hill is ultimately going to take this team to a playoff WIN, or they wouldn't have flirted with Warner the way they did. I believe in this team the way it's presently constructed. If we're willing to see a few bumps along the way, Alex Smith can still develop into a capable starter this year. He's never had this good a situation to step into like this. I have to believe the exposure to Hill protecting the ball has helped too.
Then, if the experiment fails, we start developing Nate Davis. We need to know if he can be the future starter this year, before the draft. All we have to lose is a possible 10-6 season and a sure playoff loss at BEST.
"All we have to lose is a possible 10-6 season and a sure playoff loss at BEST."
And that will be a success in my book. Our schedule is VERY difficult this year. 10-6 would be tough. I live in the DC are a nd follow the Skins and Ravens as close as I do the 9ers. I just love football. The 2000 Ravens didn't score an offensive TD for 5 straight games. It was unbelievable to watch. Yet, they still one the Super bowl. They did it with defense and ball security. The 9ers problem is, their defense is NO WAY near what the Ravens had in 2000. We're still developing, but getting there. Love to see the playmakers in the secondary. Still need DL push.
With that said, the 2000 Ravens changed QBs late in the year to Dilfer. He didn't exactly light it on fire, but provided a change of pace. Bringing Smith in will only be a change of pace and not a 20+ point explosion we are going to need. He just doesn't have that NFL QB swagger. We can't waste anymore time with him. Smith will probably get his chance at some point, as we are being hammered by a team that has scouted us very well and simply shuts us down on offense and exploits our defense: i.e. Minn, Indy, GB, Pilly.
Smith will have his chance but it will be in vain as he is not P. Manning, Breez, Roth, or Brady (when he came in for Bledsoe). He is a QB from Utah's spread offense.... Utah...
Davis is still a rook and he might actually be the sleeper you are referring too. He may come in an dazzle during the Chicago or GB game. He knows the playbook by then and just simple plays the game. That would be nice. Smith will have to be hurt. Hopefully Sing sends him to the locker room.
But when it is all said and done, Hill is still the QB and is winning. The defense is spectacular and Sing has something going.
Go Hill. Go Sing. Go 9ers!!!!
...dude...blame the guy executing the plays.....
So now you're going to say Hill calls the runs up the middle on most 2nd downs. What about the ineffective "taser" on 3rd downs, who's calling those, Hill? Where was VD in the 2nd half after a good 1st half, blocking again? Hill may cause your heartburn but the guy is 9-3 in his starts even if he's no all-pro.
I'll go with Alex too WHEN he can play consistantly enough to beat out Hill, because that would mean more wins for the Niners. Until then let's ENJOY the wins ugly or not. 9-3 is not to shabby for a backup.
..i see what you see also....i followed the Skins and Ravens as close as I do the 9ers......
...i know exactly what i am looking at right now and trust me this is 7-9 team at best.
you are such an idiot! So your saying you'll take a "sexy" protypical qb with a "big arm" and take losses over a guy that just wins? So you'd rather be 0-2 but with nice sweet lookin spirals over 2-0 with a guy that just wins? Your such a doushbag.
Here's a stat for ya: Shaun Hill has the best win percentage of any other qb in the nfc with Romos loss yesterday. With Hill in the lineup we've won 6 of the last 7 games. you can't hate, your arguments aren't even worth commenting on. And if you were a man of your word you would get off this site because you lost the bet fair and square poser. get lost with your Hill hate.
In the words of T.O.: "that's my quarterback." Shaun Hill would kick your ass and you know it so stop talking e-shite all the time.
How much dope do you smoke oneniner?
Matt wrote ...first sack of the game, it wasn't Snyder's fault. Hill should've gotten rid of the ball and he ran right into the defender
--------------------------------------------
I dissagree matt. If you watch it over you will see that snyder starts to ride him to the right and Hill sees the gap to the right that snyder is creating and starts to scramble into what looks like a great gap. Right at that moment,Snyder gives up contact with his man as the pass rusher changes direction and heads back towards the pocket. Snyder just simply did not hold his block. Hill did the perfect thing but Snyder got owned.
Bill walsh once said about Bubba Paris vs Steve Wallace at Tackle.Wallace finishes his blocks,Bubba finishes his dinner. I don't think snyder has Bubba's problem but he certainly didn't finish his block on that play,as Hill was expecting him to do.
It was Snyder's fault that time!
