Singletary says only 1 or 2 jobs on the line in finale

The 49ers' final exhibition game will have little impact on the team's final roster, coach Mike Singletary said today.

He said, "I have a very good idea" which players will survive the mandatory cut to 53 players on Saturday. Singletary said there might be only one or two roster spots that hang in the balance when the 49ers hit the field Friday night against the San Diego Chargers.

It's difficult to say which roster spots are up in the air. In some cases, there are head-to-head battles.

Perhaps, cornerbacks Marcus Hudson and Eric Green are going for the same job. (The 49ers know what they have with Hudson, and I think he makes the team, but they need one more chance to evaluate Green in a game situation.)

At tight end, J.J. Finley and Bear Pascoe are dueling for the same role. Center/guard Matt Spanos or Cody Wallace? Does return man/receiver Micheal Spurlock have a chance if return man/cornerback Allen Rossum makes it?

Is rookie defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois competing against veteran Demetric Evans or would his roster spot come at the expense of depth at another position?

The 49ers like safety Curtis Taylor, a seventh-round draft pick, so would it be too much of a risk to waive him, in hopes he clears waivers, with the idea of placing him on the practice squad?

Those questions will be answered on Saturday.

Here are a couple guesses, though: I think undrafted rookie running back Kory Sheets makes it, but offensive lineman Alex Boone and fullback Brit Miller could end up on the practice squad.

Be prepared for the Nate Davis Show on Friday, as the rookie from Ball State will play at least three quarters of the season finale against the Chargers.

In fact, Davis will be the only 49ers quarterback available after starter Shaun Hill exits after the first dozen (or so) plays of the game. Backup quarterback Alex Smith will not play in the game, Singletary said. Smith sustained a thumb sprain while making a tackle Aug. 22 against the Raiders.

Smith would be available to play if this were a regular-season game, Singletary said. But, clearly, the 49ers do not want to take the chance on Smith being unavailable for the season opener Sept. 13. After all, the 49ers enter the final exhibition game with only three quarterbacks after releasing Damon Huard during the week.

Singletary said the 49ers had already made the decision to go with Davis as the No. 3 quarterback, but they thought they'd give Huard a chance to look around to give him a heads-start on finding a job elsewhere.

The 49ers' first-team offense will play a series or two, in the neighborhood of 10 to 12 snaps. Hill will start. But running back Frank Gore and receiver Isaac Bruce will not suit up. Offensive linemen Adam Snyder and David Baas, who are coming off injuries, might see a little more action than the other starters.

Singletary said the following players will not take part in Friday's game:

QB Alex Smith (thumb; he'll be ready for the backup role for the season opener)

WR Arnaz Battle (shoulder; every indication is he will make the team)

C Cody Wallace (viral meningitis; this is not the serious kind of illness)

LB Ahmad Brooks (knee; is questionable for the season opener)

S Michael Lewis (concussion; his status remains uncertain)

LB Jay Moore (groin; probably won't make 53-man roster but has practice squad eligibility)

WR Brandon Jones (shoulder; expected to be out of action through September)

WR Isaac Bruce (focusing on regular season)

RB Frank Gore (focusing on regular season)

The 49ers did not fill the roster spots after tackle Marvel Smith retired and Huard was released. They're down to 73 players (64 of whom will be in uniform). The club must release 20 players by the Saturday deadline.

Matt, Can you do this roster review following the game on Saturday?

...looking forward to see N. Davis....

i am torn between Micheal Spurlock and Allen Rossum - who is more valuable?

i think jay moore should be released we can use his spot on the practice squad for someone else who deserves it.

I think it too bad that Moore is injured yet again. I hoped this would be his year. But it may be time for the 9ers to move on. Continual injuries are either poor prep or bad luck.

Wouldn't they lose money if they Cut Rossum after he just signed a new deal??

I really like spurlock a lot. i might even like him more then i like Jason hill

god man it kinda sucks having so much talent to choose from lol

Spurlock over Rossum. Let Sheets return kickoffs and Spurlock or Battle return punts.

Rossum is a better return guy, but he is too one dimensional. Spurlock can run the Tazer and develop into a nice reciever. Plus he is a lot younger.

i want RJF and taylor to make the team! taylor can be our new SS in the future...i think lewis is done as a 9er

I hope the Niners turn the page on Arnez Battle and Allen Rossum. I would love to see M. Spurlock and D. Zeigler get a crack at the 53 man roster. Although Battle had a great pre-season you just know he will be on and off IR throughout the yr. Spurlock is more explosive than Rossum he just doesn't have Rossums experience. That will come with playing time.

MATT,

What are the chances that Crabtree gets just below the 18M that Raji at No. 9 got over 5 years (ie. $17.95) plus more contract incentives than Raji?

Or how about 14.3 guaranteed over 4 years?

At this point, are the Niners only concerned about agreeing to a higher guaranteed amount or the full contract amount incl. incentives etc. than no. 9?

Bottom line, how flexible are the Niners in upping their 16m offer and at the same time, meeting their goal in not paying Crabtree more than Raji got at No. 9?

Taylor is a good athlete who needs some time to learn how to play defense but I hate exposing him to the PS. I hate Mark Roman despite his consistency, he is not a playmaker and he is the last year of his deal so let him go. Spurlock is versatile and looks like the WR version of M-Rob to me..jack of all trades master of none. Rossum is a tough choice b/c it is nice to have a return man who plays smart and does not turn the ball over..his experience is valuable there but he is not a CB and should not be allowed on the field unless the opposing kicker is on the field too. Don't know much about Eric Green or Demetric Evans but as far as a philosophy I believe we should give our young draft picks every opportunity to develop. I just hate the prospects of losing Pascoe Taylor and RJF to waivers because each one has a little bit of potential to have a small impact. I do not understand everyone's infatuation with Brit Miller though as far as wanting him above Moran Norris. The kid has heart and should make PS but he is not ready to start or be on the 53

I'll take Jean-Francois and Curtis Taylor over Evans and Hudson.

Keep Bear! JJ Finley should make it through waivers.

I'm happy w/ either Rossum or Spurlock.

i want hudson on the team too. evans can be cut

Ike: It's not that I think Miller should start over Norris(although we really don't know how much Norris has left in his tank,do we?). It's that Miller is a special football player and if he is as strong at blocking as he seems to be at everything else,he would be a great starting FB,next year, when Norris is done. I am happy with him on the PS BUT am just a bit worried that since real blocking type fB's who can also receive etc are soooo hard to find coming out of college these days, that there might just be a team out there who badly needs one NOW and would grab him off waivers for free.Probably not,but it worries me a bit.
There are going to be at least 4 or 5 guys cut that I will feel the pain for. Hopefully most of them make it to the PS and stay there until next season ,when they can hopefully help.

First! I think it's GREAT the way MS is handling Alex's injury! Opposite of what that IMBECILE Nolan did, MS is showing that he cares a lot about Alex's injury and not making something big about Alex's mindset and calling him out! Maybe that IMBECILE will find out what it's like to get called out someday! He's a gutless guy who proved in SF that he has absolutely NO TALENT to be a head coach! God help Denver!

Matt - Have the Niners indicated if they are or will be in the market for another right tackle?

I hope they cut Jay Moore. He was terrible in Jerry Mcguire!

MM - Spikes said on Twitter that Mike Singletary surprised the team and did a remix of the '85 Super Bowl shuffle earlier this week during the rookie talent show. Do you have any scoop on this? Would love to see video of that!!!

Naz-agreed, further Kory Sheets IMHO should be a lock to make this squad, giving us a rather formidable running stable.I'm looking for Nate Davis,Kory Sheets,M. Spurlock and B Miller to have strong showings this game.(P.S. Terry although my critique of Coach Nolan would be more forgiving I do concur that not pushing Alex shows more wisdom than previous treatments-also think it was classy of Coach Singletary to let Huard go when he did allowing him more time in the job market.).

Good question Stampede,

If I were the 49ers I would definetly keep a roster spot open & eyes peeled once the waiver wire opens up once all the teams make their last cuts.

I figured they would probably wait until after final cut downs, since it's not an urgent need. But none the less a need.

I'm "now" ecstatic the 49ers are going to protect Nate Davis! He's sure shown that he has the ability to be a good QB prospect for the future. It seems he has the arm strength and ALL the throws necessary to make it in the NFL.
But that doesn't change my mind set on the draft next year. I think the team should draft one of the big time QB's available in next years draft with the what they can do with having the 2 draft choices they have. Not because I don't think that Nate can't make it. But that said, no one really knows what Nate will bring in the future. In other words everything is conjecture at this time about his progression at this point.
I see nothing wrong in having 2 pretty good, young QB prospects battle it out to see who will be the franchise guy at that position. In no way is drafting a big time QB next year a wrong move. Yea! The team can use the draft choice to help at another position, but almost all the positions can use help do to injuries and just plain ineptness on the part of a player.
But a real QB battle isn't necessarily a bad thing. DeBerg and Montana, Montana and Young, Manning and Warner, even Rivers and Brees in San Diego helped both QB'S by showing each had the inner strength to be a starter, even if it ended up being for another team.
I've come to realize that neither Hill or Smith can't be the future guy to lead the team to that next step up to being a great team. Sometimes I wonder if Davis looks so good because Hill and Smith look so "vanilla," using a word kicked around lately. Everyone knows each guys weaknesses and you can bet the opposition knows more than we do about them. If the team decided to let either one go, do you really think the team will get a lot back? And the one left to be our QB can be the guy until one of the next QB's is ready.
But drafting the bigtime QB next year can bring the possibility of having two real good QB's and bring about a competion between the two, or at least giving the team the opportunity to gauge who can bring the team to that next step. Drafting another QB has the same pit falls that any drafted player brings. But saying that, I think a good QB battle between 2 NFL prospects can't hurt any different than drafting any other position player to compete against another.
60% running or 45% running doesn't matter if the guy throwing the ball isn't able to pressure the opposition with his arm and accuracy. That seems to be where we are now. "Maybe," a word that should always be used with any draft choice is the only word that can be used. There are NO DEFINITE'S in a draft choice no matter who the guy is. But knowing that, it does look right now that "maybe" Nate can be the franchise QB. How about the 49ers get another QB in the draft who "maybe" can be the franchise QB? And let the best man win!

Anyone have a roster in numerical order or prelim depth chart to make it easier to watch the SD game?

We have Alex Smith who last time I checked is a young QB prospect who can develop with Nate Davis. We need not draft another QB in the first round next year. We have far too many holes everywhere else to be worrying about a gamble on a first round QB. We have some expiring contracts next year and some veterans who could retire..I.Bruce, T.Spikes,W.Harris,Dre Bly, M.Roman, A.Franklin, D.Baas, and A.Battle so if Crabtree does not sign then we need another reciever and then a whole lot of defense..OLB, NT, ILB, CB, and S then maybe some o-line depth and or WR..Alex Smith will be a good QB if he can learn the system before he plays in it..Hill has the ability to improvise and vocal leadership of the team cuz he is older and has the right personality....Alex needs structure and the time to learn the playbook inside/out so he has the confidence to lead the team..long story short NO QB in the first round again!!!

Too far away to make that decision now. All three of our current QB's should have the opportunity to prove their value, one way or another, this year. Our scouts should look at all positions, even QB's, even for the 1st round.

Yeah, I read they're snooping around. I heard there might be a cut or two of possible interest from Ravens' OL.

I'm sure this is a joke, but I don't understand. The movie came out in 96, Moore would have been ~13 yrs old. I'm sure there's some levity here that's wasted on me.

Hey Matt,

Would Crabtree be taking a huge risk by reentering 2010 draft because they could have a rookie salary cap by then right?

Also, How long did mike singletary holdout for his rookie contract?

thanks

The Ravens? Man, I hope they cut Michael Oher. They don't need that guy.

I saw Jamie Dukes raving about Michael Oher and showed a clip of him in preseason. He is a monster on the field. Oh well, sign Crabtree and we will be happy. He will be all pro in two years.

In hindsight M.Oher looks like a great choice for us,eh?
Its a shame to need to take their castoffs while he's bulldozing and Crab's just dozing. I saw a little bit of Oher play in a game this pre-season and he's looking great. The prevailing wisdom on draft day was he wasn't worth #10, but that's now in doubt. The thing is I saw MC slipping and with Monroe and Raji gone, I would've pulled the trigger on Crabtree too. Then most of y'all would've been mad at me!

Interesting thoughts from S.I. on our QB:

Shaun Hill - We're not going to sit here and tell you we've watched a lot of Shaun Hill game film over the years. We haven't. But the performances of this pigskin persona non grata leap off the stat sheet in his brief NFL career (10 starts).

• The 49ers are 7-3 over the last two years when Hill starts.

• The 49ers are 5-17 over the last two years when somebody else starts.

The competition he's faced has not been particularly stout -- the wins last year came against the Rams (twice), Bills, Jets and Redskins. But there is obviously a big difference in the 49ers with and without Hill at the helm.

His individual numbers are pretty damn good, too.

• 181 of 288 (64.0%), 2,547, 6.9 YPA, 18 TD, 9 INT and 90.5 rating.

Would you take that performance out of your young new quarterback after 10 games? Of course you would. Jets fans, Lions fans, Browns fans -- any of them would be ecstatic if Sanchez, Stafford or Brady Quinn put up those kind of numbers through Week 10.

So we want to see what becomes of this budding little star. The 2009 season will go a long way toward telling us if Hill is the next Brady -- an unheralded quarterback who comes out of nowhere -- or just another flash in the 49ers pan.

Oh no doubt, I would've selected Crabtree at 10 as well, and anyone who say's they wouldn't is lying to themselves. The NFL draft is such a lottery. You make the investment but no one really knows who will win or lose.

Mike in SF2, nice post. I've been trumpeting that same tune all along. If it was some young QB who put up S.Hill's numbers from last year, he'd be the unquestioned starter for '09 with all the talk being about "upside this" and "potential that." Hill is a winner and the numbers definitely show it, regardless of the teams he's faced.

Would have been an interesting choice if Raji or Tyson or one of the non-Oher OTs would have been there at 10 in addition to Crabtree. I have a sneaking suspicion the Niners would have taken one of them instead.

Alex is still a "maybe." How long can you go with a guy who's been in the NFL as long as Alex has been (despite the obvious idiocy of Nolan and different OC's,) and couldn't beat out Hill. How long can you keep putting "maybe" after his name?

Can anybody here tell me why Brady Quinn of the Browns got quite a few endorsements after he was drafted and still gets them, but shows absolutely nothing on the field?
All I see is he's got a good build. Could it be the old Notre Dame cheerleaders around the Country pushing for what is a guy with little NFL talent. He couldn't beat out lousy Andersen for 2 years.
Nate Davis has ten times the talent of this Notre Dame Alumni!

The entire coaching and scouting staff has been focused on picking the best 53 since before training camp started and my guess is they already have the 53 selected. An injury could change things, but otherwise they know this group pretty thoroughly. Hence the Huard decison. But they need a bunch of guys to be on the field in the 2nd half tomorrow, so the real 53 don't get beat up.

For now, I vote no on the Niners taking a QB in the 1st round next draft. Once Davis knows the entire playbook, there's nothing stopping him from becoming the starter next year. With two #1 picks, Singletary can get the stud NT his 3-4 defense needs...the other pick could be Mays or a pass rusher like Jerry Hughes. OT is another option. All are more needed than another QB.

I wanted Oher but wasn't unhappy about the way it unfolded & landing Crabtree until this long way overdue holdout. Once he signs & starts making plays all will be forgotten.

To Mike in SF #2 so far Orapko's looking good as well. I think it's better to wait the entire year for a more accurate 1st eval but he's definitely making an impression. Good info on Hill. Looking forward to seeing how he does & who he really is as a QB now that he has his opportunity starting coming into a new season. The first 3 games & the Falcons will be a hell of a test. AZ, Vikes, & ATL all playoff teams & a healthy Seattle team is gonna be dangerous. There's no let up..all teams are fresh & hungry & will be coming after him. Bring it on Sean!

NINERS!!

I completely agre Frank !!! Maybe draft another QB in the late rounds to be a backup to Davis in the future or in case Davis somehow doesn't get it done,we have plan B ? But I have been saying all along that with Davis we can use those 2 #1's on playmakers .
