Singletary: We got our tails kicked up front
Mike Singletary just concluded his first day-after game press conference to wrap up the team's 20-16 victory over the Cardinals.
Here are some of the highlights:
--The last question of the press conference was about Michael Crabtree. Singletary was asked if the team sent Crabtree a letter, as reported by Fox's Jay Glazer, stating that the team's contract offer would be "modified" if he did not sign by Sunday.
"At this time in the year, that may be the case. I'm not sure," Singletary said. 'I didn't want to hear about it any more after last Friday. I said, 'Hey, do what you have to do. I'm focused over here.'
"So I don't know if the letter's actually been sent. I know we talked about it. But at this point, the whole Michael Crabtree thing, you know what I'm going to say. It's over there. I'm going to focus over here. We have our hands full with the 53 (players) that we have."
By "modified offer," that would mean that either the 49ers are offering less money for a five-year deal or they've increased the deal one more year with a corresponding increase from their five-year offer.
--The 49ers might be adding a receiver soon, though. Brandon Jones, who sustained a broken right shoulder during training camp on Aug. 6, will be back in uniform and might start practicing this week with the club. He was originally expected to be out through September. It's uncertain if he might be able to return a week (or two) sooner than expected.
--Singletary was not pleased with the performance of the 49ers' offensive line. The 49ers gained just 21 yards rushing. It was the lowest total in a winning effort in 49ers franchise history.
"Obviously, we're going to have to play much better on the offensive line," Singletary said. "We're going to run the football when we need to run the football.
"There were a couple times in the football game when we didn't need to let our defense get back on the field and we did. Good football teams can't do that."
He added, "We got our tails kicked up front."
--Right tackle Adam Snyder had a difficult game, and that might open the door for veteran Tony Pashos to begin getting worked into the mix, Singletary said. The 49ers signed Pashos to a one-year contract after the Jaguars released him.
"Obviously, we want to get a chance to look at Pashos," Singletary said.
--Hindsight being 20/20, Singletary said there are definitely some things offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye would've done differently in yesterday's game. The only success the 49ers had was in the passing game. On their game-winning drive, Raye called 13 passes on the 15-play march. Singletary said Raye is still learning about the team's offensive personnel.
--Singletary had some major issues with referee Don Carey, who was in his first game in that role. He had a spirited talk in the tunnel at halftime.
"You don't want to hear what I said. It was very positive," he joked. "He may not say that. . . . Really what it came down to, when you're making calls out there, have somebody over there near me that can relay some kind of information and I'll be fine. And that's what we talked about. That happened in the second half. It worked out a lot better."
NFL spokesman says Carey reported Singletary was "professional and respectful in questioning a couple of calls."

So would Brandon Jones be in the slot or rotate in to one of the #1/#2 spots?
Hey Matt- How do you think Singletary's "tails kicked" comments will go over with the OL? That may be true, but it sure seemed like it was 7, 8 or 9 guys vs. 5 most of the time. I'm pretty sure any OL would get their tails kicked with those numbers. I haven't replayed the game to focus on it so can't say with certainty, but stubborn playcalling seemed like a bigger problem than the OL. Something tells me Heitmann and Staley will be none too pleased with their coach's comments.
MM - There is a nfew report from PFT.com that a "few" niners players spoke to Crabtree after the game yesterday. Have you asked any of the players directly about this? I'm sure they could provide a little more insight than the Deon Sanders spin. Seems like they could give him the kick in the tail he needs to sign and get going.
Question: There is a nfew report from PFT.com that a "few" niners players spoke to Crabtree after the game yesterday. Have you asked any of the players directly about this?
My response: I don't know any players on the team who speak to Crabtree. I'm not saying there aren't player who speak to him, but I don't know whom they would be. --Matt M.
really smart of coach singletary talking to the head ref to get a guy by him, that was a problem last season, which was part of the reason why we lost last year in arizona. I don't think martz would call a power run up the gut 4 yds away instead of 1.5 yds from the endzone.
Question: How do you think Singletary's "tails kicked" comments will go over with the OL?
My response: I'm sure it'll go over as it was intended. The truth hurts, and it should make them more determined to see to it that it doesn't happen again. --Matt M.
1. Classic Coach Sing, "I'm focused over here."
2. I've been a fan of Snyder all along, this is his shot though, either get it together or go the way of Kwame.
3. Jones coming back early? Very good news.
4. Crab who?
Matt,
In the case of the Hill fumble that was ruled an incomplete pass. If the refs would not have ruled the play dead couldn't the Cards have advanced the ball and scored the T.D. easily. Instead they have to review the call and then give the Cards the ball but only at the 40 yard line. Then the Cards only got 3 points out of that drive. So did the refs cost the Cards points? Could that have affected the outcome of the game? Is this similar to the Ed Hockalee call last year with the Chargers and Broncos? Why don't the refs let the play end before blowing the whistle too early? Bc you can reverse a fumble for a touchdown but not an incomplete pass for a fumble and touchdown.
Ok, let's get Crabtree in. Now is the time you make the deal! Give him a "face-saver" and sign him and we all win.
Close him.
One more thing, as I've said, I was at the game yesterday, did I tell you I had a great time? Anyway, I was listening to the local broadcast, these guys set the standard for being homers, should have heard the whining about bad ref calls. Anyway, in the 2nd half, after momemtum had shifted to the Cards, they were feeling pretty full of themselves and had a great time poking at us using a 50-year old WR on an end-around. Yuk, yuk.
I love how the cards are now full of doubt, questioning where they are, looks to be quite a bit on in-fighting as well.
It sure was pretty to me.
Thanks MM. You da man!!! Did anyone figure out what Coach Sing is doing with that Stop Watch during the games? He seems to use it a lot.
Matt,
Totally agree the "truth hurts" but you know what? Those are grown men that Sing was refering to & if they have any pride of what they do on Sundays they will take Sing's comments to heart & do alot better next week. I believe they will because they have to if the 49ers are going to be successful this season.
Guys - I have to ask. After yesterday, would you rather of had Warner or Hill behind center? That story line didn't get a lot of play but you have to wonder what Kurt was thinking after the Niners won.
...21 yards ...wow and we Won.....double wow
I'm thinking that if Warner had started the game for us, with the way our OL played, that Hill, as the back-up, would have finished it.
True, tails were kicked.
Equally as true is the team staged an impressive fourth-quarter, long drive to win the road game against the conference champions.
I think Singletary is a master of psychology and even better out of getting the best out of his players. If someone's feelings got hurt, they're going to have produce to play.
We got a lot to work on, but I'd much rather start off 1-0 than 0-1.
I though 9-7 all along. I'm fine with that now.
Hey Matt please answer this: What does Deion Sanders have against the 49ers? He keeps saying lots of hurtful things about them on NFL network. I once liked him alot but now I hate him.

Badnews, to ask "if the refs did not call the play dead" is like asking "if the refs called the holding that was so clearly apparent... "
Also, IF the play was NOT called dead, perhaps there would have been an offensive player who might have caught and tackled the player whom recovered the ball. There were only a few players who continued the play because it WAS blown dead.
The Cardinals had plenty of opportunities to win the game; the 9ers are the team that took control and actually did it. Are you trying to find a reason this wasn't a victory the 49ers earned?
...cmon dude...you know the answer
...the defense won that game - big time
no ifs or buts.....from the secondary to the d-line
defense won this one
Matt how do I respond to you in Twitter? Do you have to follow me my twitter name is aaronmjjosie. I get all ur tweets on my cell phone
Look on the bright side, Aaron. When Crabtree signs, Neon Moron will have to publicly eat crow all over national TV and sports sites. Ha ha. And if he can't eat the crow, he'll look like a schmo. One thing's certain, he and Crabtree are not getting one bit of support any where else in America right now. It's a universal thumbs down, baby.
True Skeebers everyone is on the 49ers side except Deion. Lets see Deion had his best year as a 49er he was the defensive player of the year and won a ring. I dont get his hate. What ever I just think we need to get Crabtree in right now we dont need negative press and I know everyone is on r side now but if this holdout continues it wont stay that way for long before people start saying we are cheap.
MATT, I HAVE AN IMPORTANT QUESTION ABOUT CRABTREE...
The 49ers have the right to trade his rights to another team, for anything, right (a spare, a 7th round draft choice)?
So they can tell him, you will never see the 2010 draft. We'll trade your rights for whatever we can get and then you'll have to make the same decision next year (take the best offer a team that only traded a spare part or late pick for your negotiating rights has to offer you). So isn't this what will ultimately happen?
"Ha ha. And if he can't eat the crow, he'll look like a schmo."
Frankly it goes without saying for Primetime. He's never met a microphone that he didn't like.
He was, however, probably the best cover corner in the history of football. Note "cover" because he hit like a Nancy – befitting of his catty behavior over Crabcakes.
49ers are cheap.
ALAN, I HAVE AN IMPORTANT ANSWER FOR YOU:
NO
"Singletary said Raye is still learning about the team's offensive personnel."
Makes sense, though Raye probably was re-learning how to call plays too. How long has it been since he's done that?
Makes sense that his play-calling was conservative for the first game under a(nother) new offensive system..
I have to agree -- 8 or 9 guys, consistent run blitzes, I mean come on, you are not going to have a running game against that, I don't care who you are. You keep them honest with quick passes, screens, etc. Sure they looked overwhelmed because...they were...by sheer numbers.
The run blitzes didn't help for sure, but I think some it also had to do with the predictability of the snap count each and every play. EVERY play they were running it down to 2 or 1 seconds on the play clock, so as a defender I would think you could anticipate the snap count fairly easily which the AZ linemen appeared to be doing cause guys like Dockett was consistenly spliting the lineman before they could even get out of their stance. After the game Hill even said on the first TD he saw the AZ defense not really ready so they hurried up and snapped it, and low and behold the blockers beat the D-line to the blocks and Gore sprung free.
Of course the 9ers wont let him enter the draft. Trading his rights is indirectly being said and heard by both parties. No need to investigate that...
If they really wanted to screw him they would trade him to the Raiders. I'd love to have their #1 pick. At least that would excuse Al from making another bonehead pick. Especially since their 2010 pick is already gone. Heck their 2009 pick might be gone too. I just don't feel like doing the research. Ya get the point though...
This is my take on what happen with the Hill fumble.
Trust me no 49er player would have caught the guy because he had an escort going down the sideline and Frank Gore tried his best to tackle him. The play was not actually blown dead at the time so no one should have quit on the play. They allowed the play to continue on so that they could review it if need be. If they would have blown the play dead at the time it would have been unreviewable like the Ed Hockalee call last year. But where the Refs messed up was after the play was over instead of counting the touchdown they decided then to rule it an incomplete pass. Therefore the Cards challenged the ruling and it was reversed. I can understand why the Refs thought it was an incomplete pass instead of a fumble but if they would have let the touchdown count then the 49ers probably would have challenged and they would have realized that it really was a fumble and touchdown. As it was they made a mistake and it cost the Cards a touchdown since they could not go back after the review and give the Cards the touchdown they deserved since they had ruled incomplete pass on the field. It was a missed call in live speed and it happens every game. It sucks for the Cards but was good for us.
Well adam shefter has just said cashtree is no longer in the bay area anymore. It could be cause its his b-day i dont know anymore i wish Scott McCloughin would shed light on this.
Pats should go back to those old uniforms.
the 9ers cannot prevent him from re-entering, he can choose to reject any team that might obtain his rights just as he's done with us. And as far as someone giving something of value for the rights to negotiate they'd have to have some assurity that they could sign him. Without inside info I don't know how this gets done. IMO if we trade his rights (in March I believe, just prior to next draft) it will not be for much, it would be for a low round pick--too much uncertainty for another club. I still say he eventually signs with the 9ers.
Okay.. gimme a break. Yeah, we won the game. But seriously, do you even think for a second that Warner was wishing he was on the 49ers squad? Sorry, no. That comment makes no sense. Truth is, we beat a better overall team yesterday, and definitely an offensive powerhouse. We've played some really tough games with the Cards the last couple years. That doesn't necessarily mean we're Super Bowl contenders all of a sudden. It just means we're doing the right things and *hopefully* we can start to establish a winning tradition here again. If you're Warner wanting to be on the 49ers (even after yesterday's game) would make absolutely no sense at all.
Erik - What kind of a question is that? All he has to do is sit in the film room with the OL and stop the film after each and every play and say What happened there? Look what you did there? These are grown men getting paid a lot of money to do a job. And they didn't do it. They already know it and they know they need to do it better. And they will. But they can't argue with him. They can't get offended when he says that . . . its right there in their faces. They didn't do their job. Hopefully they will. No way they will be offended though. They will be challenged.
Trade Crabtree's ass to Bengals for 7th rd pick. At this time I don't care. He is useless this season anyway. Let him suffer in Bengal's misery rest of his pathetic life.
I just heard that its Crabtree's birthday and as a birthday gift the niners reduced their offer haha. any truth to this Matt??
As I noted all week long, that 60 % run quote from Raye was just him pulling the media's chain.Sing said last week that they would do whatever it takes to win, even if it was passing 75% of the time. As we saw,it was 58% pass and 42% run ! Pretty well balanced,as Raye and sing have always said was what they wanted.
A new offense was installed and the new OC and the players need to get in synch (and the OC is still learning the plays his starting players run best etc ).The offense will get better and start running more smoothly, with time playing together. When they(offense) catch up to the no more Nolan defense that Manusky is running beautifully,it will be a pretty tough team to defeat ! As I have been saying all along, the future looks very bright and Jed and Sing and McGloughan will not accept anything less than winning and continuing to improve.(not to mention that Scotty is looking great in that trade on draft day with Carolina !!!,as most of us said was a great move !).
No SB this year, but it does look like there will probably be some in the not too distant future ! Go Niners !
NastySteve - Do you even read Matt's blog before you post? He answers your very question above.
The 49ers will obviously hope for a trade if things come to that because it's their only chance to get anything out of their pick if he truly doesn't sign. What I don't get is what Crabtree's hopes are.
1.He has to hope that a team is willing to trade with the 49ers (giving up some sort of draft pick at least in return) and also be willing to pay him more than the niners are currently offering even though he would then be unproven + a year out of football (really tarnishes his prospects as a year out hasn't been friendly to big prospects in the past, usc wr mike williams for example).
2.If things get all the way to next year's draft, things get uglier. Team's aren't going to risk a first round pick in order to lose it the same way the niners did so he would be picked even later in the draft if at all and be that much further away from chances of signing a better deal.
As been said before, if there were teams willing to do #1 above, where were they when the chance was there trade up and pick him this year (which would be even more valuable because then you wouldn't have the added unknown of him being out of football for over a year).
honestly i missed the part where he wrote that but im kinda more interested in knowing if they really did it on his birthday like its been reported. If so i think its funny!
also being that i never normally ask a question thats already been answered. how is it that my loyalty to reading his blog is question the very first time? lol.
After the game I wondered to my self how many plays do we have in the playbook? It seemed to me that there were about 5 or 6 from watching the game.
Now I'm sure there are more than that and we had enough plays to win the game and that's all that counts! But it's really unsettling to me the answer from MS that "Raye is still learning about the team's offensive personnel." It just doesn't sound right. Even if that statement is true, it seems to me Raye should be well aware of who can do what, and where and when he can do it. It's a little late to be learning about the personnel. I don't know how you can even draw up a playbook for a professional team without knowing your personnel, well.
From the small amount of plays Raye called in the game, he needs to spend 24 hours a day learning about his personnel! That's just the way I see it!
Badnews, Are you serious!!! you have posted the same comment several times. We could care less if the Cardinals were robed of points. Don't you remeber so many other situations that 49ers were robed of points or even the game for different calls (how about last year in AZ!!!) Come on man, are you 49er fan or a red bird fan or a furstrated fader fan on the wrong blog!!!
SC Rick, I can imagine the feeling. I have never been to AZ new stadium. GO 49ers despite all the expert opinions picking the red birds.
Amen Cheryl. 49ers were the better team period. So they won.
Giving it another 24-hours of thought... Thank God for CRAPPY officiating and the defense. We didn't "win" that, the refs gave it to us after the defense kept us in it...
Put the Cardinals' TD back on the board... Or the defense doesn't play well to make up for the inept Shaun Hill...
We so lose at least 23-14. Maybe worse.
LUCKIER team. And don't forget it!
