Mike Singletary had already delivered his postgame locker room address to his players. After the media was allowed into an interview room at one side of the locker room, he had more words to say.
Singletary began working the room, shaking hands with his players after the 49ers' crushing 27-24 loss to the Vikings. His job was to make sure the loss does not crush the season.
He loudly instructed his team to keep their heads high and their shoulders back. And then he made a promise.
"We'll see them again in the playoffs!" he said, his voice booming.
Where to start with this one?
This game had a little of everything: a field goal blocked for a touchdown (Ray McDonald with the block, and Nate Clements with the 59-yard return), a kickoff return for a touchdown (Vikings' Percy Harvin of 102 yards), the possible breaking out of Vernon Davis (seven catches, 96 yards and two touchdowns).
But the only thing most people will remember is Brett Favre's 32-yard laser to Greg Lewis along the backline of the end zone for the winning points with :02 remaining. Lewis made a fantastic catch and got both feet inbounds against the coverage of Mark Roman in the end zone.
How many quarterbacks can make that play?
"Right now, all I know is one," 49ers outside linebacker Manny Lawson said.
Lawson got to Favre just as he let the pass fly. He came so close to winning the game with a hit on the Vikings quarterback. How close did he come?
"Not close enough," Lawson said. "But close enough to know I'll be thinking about that play for a while."
* * *
In the postgame locker room, the 49ers took a very professional approach. I've seen a lot of locker rooms like this that were morgues. Singletary did not want this locker room to take on that characteristic.
What I witnessed was a resolve. I was very impressed with what I saw.
"We are a good team," linebacker Takeo Spikes said. "It's not we're going to be a good football team. But we have to look at the film and get better."
"We're not going to dwell on this," Justin Smith said. "We have to get ready to play
"It's a heartbreaking loss," said tackle Joe Staley. "But everybody here busted their butts, and we'll keep our heads up. We're going to get it done."
* * *
And then there was the message from Singletary:
"You look at a game like today and it was a tough loss," he said. "A team that lost this game -- particularly like that -- is going to be better for it. We will be better moving forward. It stings and hurts like heck, but going forward it will help us. We have to learn how to finish and we have to learn how to play big games."
How does it go about making his a positive?
"It's already a positive," he said. "It's one of those things where you go through a season and you hope that it doesn't happen. We were 2-0 and everyone was thinking, 'Well, hopefully, we can keep this thing going.' When you lose a game of this magnitude, we knew it was going to be a war coming in here. . . . I'd rather we lose now, taste it, chew on it, swallow it and get better."

INJURY REPORT
RB Frank Gore: He left the game after aggravating his right ankle on the first play of the game - a 4-yard carry. Gore did not return, and I can't see him playing next week against the Rams. The 49ers need to be cautious with him. They can't afford to have this injury linger throughout the season. Obviously, Gore was injured in last week's game a lot worse than he led on.
LT Joe Staley: He was not pleased after the game that he had been victimized by a leg whip. He sustained a right knee contusion in the second half and had to leave the game for a while.
LG David Baas: He sustained a left ankle sprain and left the game for a while in the fourth quarter. He returned later to finish the game.
CB Dre' Bly: He had a right two toe contusion but continued to play.
S Reggie Smith: Had a right groin strain and played again.
LB Jeff Ulbrich: He was listed with a right quadriceps contusion.
RB Glen Coffee got the wind knocked out of him in the first quarter. In the first half, Coffee gained just 16 yards on nine carries. He said he has to do a better job of coming to play and making an impact when he steps on the field. Coffee finished with 54 yards on 25 carries.
* * *
Also, Lawson experienced cramping after the game and took intravenous fluids before leaving boarding the team bus to the airport.
* * *
Check back in a while. I'll put up audio of an interview with 49ers center Eric Heitmann.

> We'll see them again in the playoffs
Only if our playcalling gets better.
PLAYOFFS? (Jim Mora Sr Voice) Not as long as you keep letting Jimmy Raye call his three runs up the gut when everyone in the free world knows that's what he's calling. 1:46 left to play and that's the best you can do? Hint: Swing Pass, screen pass, ANYTHING but three up the gut and give the ball back to a future HOF QB. Dumb!
.....:).....no he didn't....nah.....he shouldnt have the said that.......the media is gonna use this against him......he just put himself in a hole
noo..noo....its gettin worse.....no coach...no no no
.....no way Shaun Hill gets you into the playoffs......no coach.....noooo....u cant for the love of GOD think S.Hill is going to get you into the playoffs...
...no ....that response was too emotinal.....not classy......thats a dumb prediction.....dumb
Good for Coach Sing.....he's making sure his players learn from this and move on. He is willing to man up and now his players will play even harder knowing that Sing has their back. Risky but sometimes passion seizes the moment. Let's learn from this and take down the Rams. By the way I was at the Hawks game......$6 for a lemonade? $30 for parking? The dogs still taste awful.
Coach, you wear the horns. Not the players. The defense should have never been on the field. The gutless play calling cost these guys the game. Hill has demonstrated he can get it done. He should have been allowed to do that during the last drive on 3rd down. One freaking first down was all we needed!
Shaun Hill's QBR today: 94.
Alex Smith, though, looks nice holding a clipboard, as far from the ball as possible.
One other thought. Glad to see the Vikes 1st round pick on the filed and adding value. We on the other hand have the only unsigned pick in the entire draft. Oher would sure have looked good at RT today. We have front office idiots. Sing wants guys that want to play...well I think that describes Oher perfectly.
The real problem is that judging from his post game remarks, Singletary won't even acknowledge that the plays called with first and ten and 1:46 to go were a problem! HELLO?! That sequence of plays just cost you the game coach! If the players who leave their blood, sweat and hearts on the field see this continue (play calling that costs them games) they will slowly buy OUT of Singletary's program.
..........Third Down Efficiency 0/11 - 0% (8 passes by S. HILL)
Man that lose was hard to swallow. And for those of you who think we cant make it to the playoffs what game were you watching? Everyone wrote us off in this game and we hung in there with what some are calling a super bowl team. You can talk all the crap you want about Shaun Hill but the dude get his butt handed to him every weekend by opposing D's and he still out there every play working his tail off. Playoffs are a given for this team no matter who calls the plays, I haven't seen a niner team this aggressive this motivated in a long while. I'm enjoying the season so far and I'm with Coach Mike, the first thing I said when the clock hit 00 was "we'll see those B**ch's in the playoffs!
Oneniner, many of the bad plays on third were because of piss por play calling on 1st and 2nd down and already being in a bad position. You lack credibility becasue you have always blindly called for A. Smith. Give it a rest man. I must admit I don't know why I even try to respond to your hard headed blind posts.
This was a great game for the NFL. Great game! Coach Sing has these guys bring it on every play. It's so easy to be negative.
Playoffs, huh? It's always good to have hope, I guess.
I'd rather have a team that can stomp the bejesus out of every team that gets in the way, though.
Whine, cry, bitch, keep it comin becuase we are going to playoffs with S.Hill and the rest of the gang. GO 49ers
.....blaming the play calling is a cop out...
its not like the players dont know the plays....that is what training camp and the weekday is for......
its starts from the top....no more excuses.....the guy that holds the ball most has to make better decisions to WIN not to play safe.....
the same criteria for A.Smith, JTO should be applied here..........our QB is not making everybody better......we have talent and we are not using them......
Why would crabtree want to sign?......
Did you even have to look for the jersey number to know that it was Roman who was victimized on that final play?
What's wrong with the site,I still can't read any of OneNiners posts ! I am sooo upset ,lol
Maybe it's the new Whine meter I had installed on my computer ? Won't let nonsense or FortyWhining be displayed on the screen .
Oh Well,Great game ! We will get better.
Oneniner, shut your pie hole. If you think Alex Smith would have won the game for us then think again. Shaun Hill did everything he could to get us the win.
The reasons why we lost is way too conservative offense on the very last series....one first down would have iced the game yet we did three runs up the gut, WTF? And then again we went to the prevent defense which barfed up the win and handed it to the Vikings.
"we are not a charity...we cannot give them the game" Mike Singletary from 2008 after loss versus the Seahawks. Well Mike, we gave them the game.
This was a loss due to piss-poor coaching in the final minutes on both sides of the ball. The players did as they were instructed but the poor decision-making from both coordinators led to this loss.
Suck it up, fickles.
I think it's fair to say everyone thought we had the win until Mark "Toast" Roman gave up that TD. All he had to do was knock the dude out of bounds and we'd all be celebrating the win. Oh well, coulda, woulda, shoulda.
We took it to them in their house without Gore and half our our OL. Shaun Hill WON the game and Roman LOST the game. I'm proud of these guys and look forward to seeing them KILL the Lambs at the Stick on Sunday.
Hopefully the Hawks and the Cards lose today. This win won't hurt so bad... Regardless, we got a good team and this division is very winnable :-)
You can question the play calling all you want(so did I) but 99.9% of NFL coaches would of done the same thing so Minn could use up those time outs. Our D was playing well and sometimes you have to trust that your D can get it done. Come on guys they needed a last ditch effort to beat us .........WERE FOR REAL!
Why would he want to sign? To make money, repair his image, play football, and be part of a solid team. I live in Illinois, so I see way too many Bears and Rams games. As a result, I know what a shaky team looks like. The 49ers, this season, are solid (Shaun Hill included).
The Roman play is why the forceout rule was changed. you push the (site decorum) WR out of the end zone and go home.
Did we throw even one swing pass today? It was nice to see Vernon play his butt off.
Amen Top Cat, Dont worry our time will come and all these whinners will be silent.
Well said. What happened to all those clowns that thought we'd start out 0-3? Gone... No surprise there.
It seems that God created Brett Favre expressly for the purpose of tormenting the 49ers.
The loss hurt, and I didn't like the play calling when they needed the first down at the end there, but in general I thought the 9ers played well against a good team - especially considering their star offensive player was out. It augers well for the remainder of the season.
And Mr. Vernon Davis, you have arrived at last! From now on, your name will mentioned in the same breath as Gore and Willis, when discussing 49er stars.
Coach Singeltary said in training camp that we will run even when other team knows its coming, well other teams know its comimg and they are stoping them. Yes they are passing but at end of the game they are scared to pass.
All i can say is 3rd and 6 and you run it up the middle when all you need is a first down to win the game?
Pathetic
I bet Bly is feeling awful. He could have sealed it. We had many chances but came up short. I have to say it again, the coach needs to step up an take the blame. I just don't feel like the players were trusted to win this game. Very frustrating. Hey, remember the year the niners got pelted by the eagles and I think went on to win the superbowl? Maybe that will happen to us this year!
oneniner, are you serious? You're sticking this loss on Hill? You can't be banned from posting here, but I think I'll disregard ANYTHING you write for the rest of the season. He's not flashy, but he played his ass off. A QB rating of 94, and the pick wasn't even his fault. In my mind, the only thing that needs work is the offensive play calling. SO sad. Look at this game and the AZ game and you'll see that when we throw and open it up a bit, we march down the field. Lulling the defense to sleep for the first 40 minutes of the game may help the passing game in the 4th quarter, MAYBE, but we HAVE to at least TRY to keep defenses honest. I'm not asking for a Texas Tech offense here, just, like, maybe TRYING to throw to a receiver on the outside once in a while? Something to keep the other team from stuffing 15 players in the box.
I know a lot of people will question 3 runs and out in our last possession, but I think as the season rolls along and coach starts to realize it's better to trust the QB then just run and punt things will get better. Coach is still learning what he has, AND he and Raye are still learning each other.
A lot will happen in their game review, because this was really a great effort and one we should have won. Play calling will be reviewed as will defensive strategy at the end of the game.
Have to say this was a tremendously entertaining game, and an encouraging game. And since I watch for entertainment it was a good 3 hours.
Matt, could you please ask Singletary the following?
1. Will he (please) reconsider his knee-jerk conservative playcalling philosophy? It was obvious to all concerned that on the last Niners drive they would run it three times and have to punt without using any appreciable amount of time. On the third down, a pass attempt down the field would have in the worst case achieved the equivalence of a punt, and otherwise would have been MUCH more likely to achieve a game-winning first down.
2. Will he (please) stop taking the position that success on the field is simply about winning head-to-head matchups? If the opponent knows what's coming, you simply are not going to be able to consistently win those matchups even if your players are much better than theirs. The running play involving Morgan setting behind the tackle is a perfect case in point (though they did finally run one different play out of that set).
This loss was heartbreaking, and is most definitely due to a coaching philosophy which will continue to cost wins over the course of a season. It's the recipe for a perpetually competetive team that never manages to take the next step. If Singletary is "willing to live with that result", then he shouldn't be the head coach of an NFL team.
Singletary also said that he wanted a team that could run even when the other teams knew it was coming. Well, the Vikings knew it was coming, but the Niners certainly couldn't run during those situations.
Time to try something new?>
Play calling was awful in the last 5min. Go for the win and throw a high percentage pass, why give Favre the opportunity. Prevent defense was terrible as well, the only thing it does is prevent you from winning.
Onewhiner two passes were dropped that would have been 1st downs on 3rd, most the other time he had massive pressure.
...all i know is when you keep running the same passing plays its because you have no confidence in your qb.....
....raye was with favre last yr....he knows what is expected from a qb.......for him to be scared of running pass plays to WIN the game its only because he doesnt believe in his QB..........
...u can sugar coat it as much as you want......Shaun Hill does not have the killer instinct....he his like a patch job whose limits is well documented.....
You said it yourself that Bly could have sealed it. Lawson could have dove for Favre and that TD doesn't happen, or Roman doesn't slow before the TD catch.
Bottom line is that the players didn't get the job done in those situations... Why blame the coach for the players' missed opportunity's?
I think if Jimmy Raye would let Hill bootleg on those critical 3rd downs,he could pass if the receiver is WIDE open to get the 1st down or he could run for the 1st down.Either way they fall down in bounds and the game is over.Even if they don't get the 1st down,Hill still falls down in bounds and the Vikes have to use their time out,so there would be no downside, unless the receiver dropped the ball.
But they HAD to make sure the Vikes used their last time out and HAD to make sure the clocj kept running on the other 3rd down failure.
Hopefully Raye will alter his thinking just a bit as he learns his team. Remember,it is usually not until mid season that a newly installed offense hits it's stride.
Poor Rams, the Niners will probably take it out on them next week ! lol
And please, stop replying/referring to oneniner - when you do this you suggest that; 1) he's credible and you respect his opinion but disagree, 2) he's important to you, 3) you care for him and would like his continued participation in this blog.
I skip over his responses, but then when I read others I have to filter through those that are independent comments and those that are mired in the gutter.
Thanks everyone for your cooperation!
It wasn't the coaches that lost this game, it was the players on the field. We are so much better because of the coaches. We have one major weakness an O Line that can't dominate. Our Defense played well but in the end it was their D Line who played better than our O Line. Neither Synder nor Pashos are anything but NFL journeymen and Sims has seen his best years.
I understand why Raye ran at the end of the game, don't forget Staley was out those last two series and it was Sims vs Allen. Personnel problems dictated those runs. Allen would have chewed up Sims in a passing formation. We were weak at both tackles. They took the risk of making the Vikings used their time-outs.
But still we were ahead at :03 and a future Hall of Famer beat us.
And if anyone thinks Hill sucked(94 QB rating and all, lol) ,then know this...Smith would have sucked more !!!
Hill did well,he and Raye will only get better (unless the whole O line is out injured for the rest of the season !)
Did you find a oneniner ignore function? . . . can you tell me where it is?
Mark Roman is a piece of garbage!!!!!!! how do you let that happen??? i am so pissed off right now i dont know what to do!!!! knock him outta the back of the endzone. i would rather have P Willie back in coverage and the sad thing is im being serious! Damn you roman!!! imn just gonna stop this comment while its still clean!!
Believe me -- I feel your pain. It's even worse when you watch the replays. He slowed right before the ball got there and didn't bother to try and push the dude out!
I'd love to see Sing cut Roman tonight just to make a point. Won't happen, but it would make my night :)
2 Coaches Blow it!!
Jimmy Raye's terrible "run the clock out" play calling is the major game blower! And Mike Singletary is also guilty for allowing the lousy plays being called to "run the clock out!"
You can't run 1:35 off the clock with a rookie running back who is averaging 2.5 YPC because he's learning to find his running lanes!
You can't run the 1:35 off the clock by running up the middle with the rookie running back averaging 2.5 ypc when the opponent has 3 TIME OUTS to stop the clock!
You show a little football intelligence by trying a dump pass after a fake or catch the opponent off guard with a short pass over the middle! Especially when their WHOLE DEFENSE is at the line of scrimage!
CAN'T BLAME DEFENSE! They gave 150% ALL game long! Yea! They gave up the TD! THEY NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE POSITION TO GIVE IT UP!
Raye and Singletary BLEW IT!! Yell at Raye and yourself on this one Mike!!
I agree with you. Man, that's twice. Anyway, what's up with the doom and gloom fans. We're 2-1, we were not only competitive but should have won. This team comes to play every week. We never got that under Nolan. We will make the playoffs. We have two winnable games coming up before the bye. At worst we're still half game up on AZ and SEA. If we're 3-2 at the bye, we're in better shape then most of the so-called fans here expected.
Okay, clean up, and lace them up for next week. We came one miracle play away from knocking off the team many consider the leaders of the NFC. More importantly, we did it without our best player. The play calling could have been better. Defense could have played better the last drive. Stop bashing the team. I don't understand why you guys get mad at oneniner for bashing Hill, and you guys bash the coaches. Oh thee of little ninerfatih!
With a minute 30 or so to go, the argument about making the Vikings use their time-outs simply does not hold water. There are so many ways to kill the clock (Spike the ball, go out of bounds, a defensive penalty etc) that the lack of time-outs means nothing.
You need to go ahead and get the first down to put the game away. At that stage of the game, any worthwhile coach has a pretty good idea what is working and what is not working. Clearly, what was working today was the passing game. The best chance of getting a first down was to have Hill throw the ball. It is not rocket science. How about letting Hill run a boot leg with an option to either pass or run if nothing is open.
Also if having Sims in the game means that you are not going to pass ever, then why is Sims on the roster at all. What are you going to do next week against the Rams if Staley can't go? run the ball 70 times.
That's exactly how you handle the little twirp!!! Keep on going by and ignore the obvious in the dude! He's a spoiled little 1st grader who wants the teachers attention!
This team is learning EVERYDAY!! And EVERY GAME has showed these guys are learning and getting better! UNLIKE the last few years!
C'mon MS! It's time to put a little butt kick towards Raye! We need a little more imagination in these last minutes of a close game!
Shaun Hill was fantastic and showed he can lead the team to a win by carrying it on his back!
Whole Defense was an A+ !!!
OL was a D !!!
Passing game was an A- !!
Running game was not graded because of rookie learning curve! lol!
The team has a good future! Their getting noticed on the Networks now! That already tells you the kind of progress they've made!
Oneniner and all other Hill bashers - if it makes you feel any better - With Alex in the game it's 31-6 Vikes. No question about it. Hill may not be the best QB in the league, or even the NFC, but he's the best QB on our roster who's NFL-ready. Davis is waiting in the wings, but Smith will be a 3rd string clipboard holder for us or someone else for the next 3 years until he is out of the league and forgotten.
GET OVER IT ALREADY.
Taunting call= 3 points for the farves. I guess its alright for d-lineman to celebrate a sack, and recievers to put on a show. I have never seen a call like that. He wasnt looking at him, didnt touch him, didnt follow him. Just stood there waived his arms like every cb does after a good play. 15 yards and a first down. And finally 3 points instead of a punt. I could have taken a loss better in O.T. Where the game should have ended up. I think it was the same ref that helped Farve put his shoulder pad back into his jersey. Makes me sick. No excuse, but that call came back to bite us. Oneniner. yOU ARE A JOKE DUDE. Get lost you bum.
you took the words right off of my keyboard.
For all of you end-of-the-worlders out there, take a slow, deep breath. We lost, on the road, in a morning game, in a very loud dome, against a real good team, on the last play of the game, by an amazing HOF throw, and an fantastic borderline toe drag catch.
If you can't find anything positive out of this, then you're apparently masochistic.
Mistakes? Absolutely. Some people can learn from their mistakes, some cannot. If had to guess, I'd say that Singletary is in the former group.
Football is a combination of strategy, execution, confidence, emotion, and desire. It all plays together. He has to keep his players motivated, and so far he has. Just one inch away, and we'd be 3-0. But he is still a rookie coach, and I believe he will learn to trust his players more -- like Hill, at the end of the game, passing.
I told my wife that I feel devastated by this loss. But the more I think about it, the more positives I see coming from it. It appears that Singletary is going to take a very good approach to this and learn, and improve. And they will. Wallowing accomplishes nothing.
And oneniner, I actually like to hear your take on the 49ers when it doesn't involve Hill. How about giving an opinion on something else? You know, throw us bone here dude.
Two calls on that play were garbage. That one and the roughing the passer. Those were two bad calls that keep the viks alive on failed 3rd downs that lead to a fg. What was up with the first play of the game too when one of the viks getting ready to blitz jumped way past the neutral zone, that was a -8yrd loss that should have been +5.
Dude exactly! Taunting?!?! Whut the F was that?! The Vikes owe 10 of their points to the refs!
You sure you're not oneniners brother. The conservative offensive play calling at the end of the game( six straight runs with no 1st downs ) put the ball back into Favre's one too many times. One first down and the games over. Coach's calls.
Also, Tony Dungy on Football Night in America, said the Niners were in a bad defense on the last play, (other than just having Roman in there on pass coverage). 5 men defending the middle of the field underneath when they should have been defending the sidelines and endzone with 12 seconds left. Even at that, all Roman had to do was make sure the guy didn't come down with both feet in, don't dive for the ball dummy, PUSH HIM OUT WHILE HE'S IN THE AIR!!!!!!! DON'T LET HIM GET BOTH FEET DOWN!!!!!!
We played well and almost beat an undefeated team on the road.
Everyone who saw Hill and the team play knows what a good roll we are on. I don't think we should be distracted by the one shrieking fan who stands alone and wants Hill replaced. I personally think it's one guy too, masquerading as a few people.
Would any of us stop and argue with a lunatic on the street who spouts nonsense? Same thing here.
Bring on the Rams!
Ok I agree with the conservative play calling, but let's be real niner fans ( except one niner!) a miracle happened today! The only thing that was gonna beat us at that point was a miracle! That catch and throw was a miracle. Won't happen again. Lay off Roman he was there. Or did everyone forget when he killed favre on that blitz? Blame goes more on play calling than anything. Trust Hill Raye! Bootleg damn it!!! Go niners!!!!!
Sing says "I want winners."
But then, in the last two possessions, the play calling was that of a LOSER.
Coach Sing talks alot about the winning attitude, well, winners would go out and try and get that first down and end the game with the ball in their hands. Not run three routine runs right into the strongest run tackles in the game.
It's blatantly obvious the guy has zero confidence in Hill. If this team had a better OC I would feel very good about this season. Right now I think its going to be a squeak them out against the weak teams and not do so well against the better teams.
The roughing the passer call is the new Brady rule. But it is a rule. A pansy one , but a rule. I dont want to ever see anyone celebrate after a good play or there better be a flag.
COME ON!! SERIOUSLY?? SERIOUS?? Our team is for real guys...WTF do they got o prove to u crybaby B!€¥*es?? Don't get it twisted, I was just as pissed that we lost!! But IF we would have won...I'm sure some of you'd would still be complaining!! Give this team some credit man shit!! All week we heard on sports stations the game of the week...HOLYCRAP man..when was the last time u heard the Niners name involved in that title??? Coach said "keep your head up and shoulders out" I'm with you coach!!!
Wow... really? We fight and lose one game by one inch and all of a sudden it's "Oh my gawd! The sky is falling! It's all Coach Sing's fault! Wahhh!!!" Yes, we lost. Yes, it stings, but if you don't believe that the 49ers can be a playoff caliber team this year after that performance, then root for another team where the weather is fair. There were a lot of mistakes, but this team has heart and we'll bounce back from this. I expect to see a blow out next week against the Rams. That would be 3 divisional wins in the first 4 weeks with 3 to go. Seattle lost today. Arizona is losing as I type this, 28-10, at the end of the 3rd quarter. If they lose, we'll remain a game ahead, and a step closer to winning the division. In otherwords, those of you giving up on the Coach Sing Regime need to zip it and go sit down somewhere. Calm yourselves down. Where my REAL Niners at?!?!
-Red & Gold Blooded
The 49ers played their best game in a very long time. Yet you all cry. This game was a huge step. We played better than we did the first 2 games. We improved. Vernon Davis almost got 100 yards. Manny Lawson got 10 tackles. "big time players show up in big time games." the team made a huge step forward. They lost to one of the better teams in the NFC. A team whose weak point is Brett Favre. Our offense lacks explosion yes. Frank Gore was not in there. And we lost by half an inch and two seconds. If they are gonna lose I am glad they lost like that.
I am so sick of the way Jimmy Ray calling plays. For the last 3 weeks, it has been running all the way. This is not the west coast system. It's good to have a running game to open up the passing game but when the running game is not working good, you have to get the running back out to the side or the middle and throw the ball to substitute the running game. Let shaun hill use his head and his arm to win game for you. You should have confident in him. If you didn't, you should not have chosen him to be your starting QB in the first place. Why let shaun hill throw the ball when you need to put together a good drive. This should be done consistently. When you have a 3 or 4 points lead and backup in your 7 or 8 yards line and you keep on running the ball through a hole and 3 and out. Com on! trust your QB and let him make the play. Shaun hill is capable of digesting the playbook in his head and just go out and execuse on game day. We should have won the ball game if the OC call the right plays. If you want to be an aggressive running team, you should have the right ofensive lines blocking.
Jimmy Ray, you need to go back and study the way how bill walsh calling play and utilize the west coast offense. I stiill wish singletary should have retain TED Tollner to be OC cause he was the right oc for shaun hill to run the west coast offense. You need to have the confident and trust in shaun hill and let him be the one to run the offense. Joe Montana and Steve Young audible and called their own play when they need to and when they want to. For the goodness shake, trust your QB and have confident in him until he mess up. We all know that you sent the message to the league the you want to run the football but when things are not working, you have to use your running back and tight end. Moving the football slowly down the field. Get the defense on the exponent to get tire and keep you defense off the field. I hope I will not see the same idiotic plays calling against. Our defense can be in the top 5 if you use your head and call the right play and keep the offense out on the field much more longer. Take the west coast playbook out from bill walsh and use it. He might be gone but he still loves the niners and he wants the niners to succeed. The steelers has 6 lombardi trophy and now we must match theirs.
DAMN RIGHT SINGLETARY! I was there today and I plan on being there again in late January because that was a possible NFC Championship Preview. You go on the road, shut down AP, knock Favre on his ass all day, Hill plays incredibly well inside the loudest stadium in the league outside of Kansas City, and oh by the way without your superstar Frank Gore. Sorry to disappoint oneniner, but these 49ers are one DAMN GOOD football team and even Viking fans were saying it leaving the stadium. Believe me, they DON'T want to see the 49ers again this year.
BEST comments of the day!! After my wife and I thought about it for awhile, we were actually shocked that we had so much fun watching the team play again!! (My above comment was written right after the game...oops!) But it was unusual to be able to say again "we can do it!" Can't wait for next week!
I am proud of Niners in this loss than the previous two wins. Even without their best player they fought back with everything they had. I know there is no such thing as a moral victory, but this isn't just a moral victory.
This team when faces with adversity rises up. This team was only one play away from winning in Minnesota in their home opener. People tend to forget that Vikings are picked to represent NFC in super bowl by many people.
I sense the rise of Niners in NFL again and today's game is just a foundation. Everybody in the nation will take a notice of 49ers now.
Amen brother. Another heartpounder -great game and although we didn't win we stood toe to toe with a very strong team to the last second.Yes our offense is still growing but I am convinced we have a very good chance at post season play this season. Don't underestimate this team!
I'm with you man and with all the other guys who saw a team grow up today (hightop, vienners, _jerden, etc.). Some "fans" can't be pleased. This is not the niners of the last 6 years. Also, this is not the west coast offense, don't days are gone. Get over it. If Sing had went for the pass and it failed and the clocked was stopped and the Vikes had kept a timeout and if they were able to win by calling timeout and making that pass, the same fans would have whined about why not force the Vikes to use the timeout and run the ball.
Game Observations (and ramblings...)
Great game by the Defense - but they can't keep carrying the Offense. If the Offense had converted a first down on that last possession we would stink at 1-10 in conversions but we would have run out the clock and outta there 3-0.
Why are we pretty much just running between the tackles? What happen to sweaps and pitches to get around the corner? Let's see some inovation - the Defense can't cover for the Offense all season.
Hill's accuracy drops radically every yard after 20 - his long balls are pretty much just 'chucks'. He gets happy feet and unloads the ball when pressured - poor composure. No wonder Crabtree doesn't want to play here...can't make incentives.
Why aren't we moving the pocket to buy time when the O line is a sieve? I know Hill isn't the most graceful thing but somehow they have got to buy some more time.
#62 might be able to run block but he certainly can't pass block worth a darn - too slow out of his stance - classic "lookout blocks".
Special teams - kick coverage is hurting. Geat job on the block though.
Don't you just hate "prevention pass defenses"?
Gore should sit out next week or we will lose him for the season if that ankle doesn't heal properly.
Crazy idea - how about picking up Vick next year? We are going to be good enough to not get a high enough pick to get one of the premium QBs coming out. Vick's running threat andmobility along with Gore would be interesting. He certainly would be an upgrade from where we are now and now he's "Humane Society Approved"!
i cant stand you bitchin ass 9er fans, the coaches you complain about are the men who have given this team the balls it has now to even keep this game close!!!!! we went in to the vikings home opener, (do you remember how pumped up you were last week) and kept it close despite being is hostile territory. after this loss look for us to put a spanking on the lambs at the stick. it is better to lose a game like this now, to learn not to like this feeling.
"Balls" don't make you better - getting better by being smarter and learning from your experiences does. I don't think that Coach Singletary believes that "good enough is good enough" either. This is the NFL - don't go Polly Anna on us.
Okay folks, call off the (critizism) dogs already! Did we really think our team would go 16-0? Our goal going into this season was to use last years late season resurgence as a foundation to build upon. We wanted to see more intensity; WE HAVE IT! We wanted to see more physical play; WE HAVE IT! We wanted to see improvement in all phases on defense and offense; WE HAVE IT! We wanted to see a playoff type team; (my declaration to all the doubters), WE HAVE IT!!!
GO NINERS!
It was cool to see our 49ers compete with the big boys...my heart was pounding half the game. Yes, the 3rd down efficiency was bad, yes the play calling was too conservative in the end, but to be honest...I was crossing my fingers all week that we would not get blown out...this game was a test, and the 49ers lived up to it.
Niners played great ..... on the road ....... in a very noisy dome. However, its Mark Roman ---- he again, fails to make a play ............... that's the story line.
